I normally don't shop at Safeway because the stores always seem rather dark and the aisles narrow, but we decided to check out the relatively new one in Wheaton. There is a parking garage underneath the store and you either take an elevator or a steep escalator up to the ground level. There is what I guess is a security device at the entrance and exits to the store. It's much brighter and bigger than most of the Safeways I've been to. We entered near the deli section. There were a number of prepared meals that looked really good, a full service deli and already packaged selections. The bakery had plenty of desserts and sweets but it didn't seem like there were a lot of breads. Maybe I just missed something. We browsed through the meat department and went up and down the aisles. The floral department didn't have as large of a selection as a nearby store but what they did have looked fresh. We didn't really need much and had little interaction with employees. We did ask a lady in the produce section for the code to the rest room and she unlocked it for us. We were intrigued with the bargain book bin and selected a few novels and a cookbook. Near the self checkout I couldn't resist a very cute dish towel. I'm not crazy about garage parking and am very familiar with my go-to grocery store so I doubt this will be my regular store, but it may be nice for a change once in a while. read more

The worst Safeway I have ever been in in my life. Way understaffed. Prices frequently ring up higher at the register than what they say on the shelf. Bakery can't seem to make more if what's popular and less of what's not popular. The Starbucks inside was staffed by idiots for so long that it was eventually removed. One older lady cashier is just a bitch. I don't go there anymore unless I must. The area also has Giant and LIDL and HMart, plus other choices that aren't too far. read more

I was looking for birthday candles and couldn't find the same number at two different Safeway stores. I settled on using smaller sized numbers. The store is small and the aisles are crammed together. I was carrying a basket and not using a shopping cart. It would have felt more challenging navigating a cart in smaller aisles. I like the personal interaction with a cashier. So many stores are encouraging customers to use the self check out. I had a few issues ringing up items. The employee was nice when helping me. Watch out for other drivers when getting back on Georgia Ave. read more

The customer service employees were just chatting and horsing around, looked at me, then moved away for more horseplay, then finally came back after their conversation was finished to assist me begrudgingly. The cashier at checkout was also unfriendly. The store is a hot mess: unclean, messy, and bare shelves. I would not return. read more

This Safeway never has anything in stock. All items are mismatched and don't pair well together. They cover the empty items all the time. There's always theft going on. All the food is near expiration or expired. During my last visit, there were roaches on the produce. I told the person in charge and they said nothing and walked away. read more

Same comment about Giant Foods..people are having a hard enough time putting food on the table, why can't they receive the discount on their phone number you are tracking them on? Major update: It seems unfair to keep the ratings for this Safeway combined with the ratings prior to October 2013. The Safeway I wrote about in 2009 doesn't exist anymore; it was demolished. Gone. Good riddance. Welcome to the 21st century. With a well lit garage parking below, and a four hundred-something apartment complex above, this phoenix certainly has risen from its ashes. Mind you, it's brand new, so we'll see if it can keep up its appearance. The produce was fresh. The fish counter had a great selection of fillets. The sushi bar looked tempting. Most importantly, for me that is, the layout is well planned. It's bigger than the Kensington location that also got a face lift several years ago. Random staff in the aisles weren't as helpful here - they are lucky I am not a secret shopper. But that's okay, I don't need you to offer to walk me to the proper aisle. I like the direction Wheaton is heading with its redevelopment plan. The aesthetic façade is appealing, and may sway me shop here more often, but I hope it's not just a sense of false security. Update May 2019 Be careful when you get fresh produce and dips at this grocery store. We came here to get some freshly made guacamole dip and when we tried it, it was spoiled. I looked at the label and it stated it was packed the day before. Most not been handled properly or maybe used spoiled ingredients. However, they need to do a better job with quality control. This Safeway is located across the street from the Wheaton metro. In terms of convenience, this location is open 24/7. There is free parking in their private garage underneath the building. They have everything that you normally get at all Safeway's. In terms of freshness, their fruits appear good. However, the veggies, it's either a hit or miss. Their bakery department is pretty good too. Their food prices are good, but wished they have more organic options. If you come here to grab a quick snack, most snack items are near the front of the grocery s Just remember to be bags with you as they do charge a bag tax for each Safeway bag used. If I could give 0 stars I would. They hire men to follow (primarily Black women) in this store. So DONT come here if you're a young Black woman just minding your business because YOU WILL BE FOLLOWED and maybe even sexually harassed!! The loss prevention workers are perverted and use it as an excuse to look at your body and follow you!! I know because I came here wearing something you definitely couldn't hide a stolen item in and was STILL FOLLOWED AROUND THE STORE!!! This store is FILTHY! Produce and fruits and vegetables expired as soon as you bring it home. I regularly find dead flies on their items and YES they sell expired food! I came here about a month after going and alerting them of some expired food and when I came back it was STILL THERE!! They hire teenagers to work which is fine if they had some home training and respect for the customers. The women who work here at 7am give zero fucks. I choose this Safeway based on its location and availability of Starbucks during my morning commute. Often they're nowhere to be found behind their counters. There is no sense of urgency and they never multi task. Ever. I tried to get the woman behind the sandwich station to serve me something behind the empty deli counter but she insisted on finishing another workers sandwich. Standing by the toaster. Waiting for it to beep. After about ten minutes I gave up and went to the Starbucks for coffee. I didn't even just wait at the Starbucks counter because I saw that lady toiling in the back for ten some odd minutes before she popped out Once again, absolutely no sense of urgency with this one either. She will ring in a drink, stand by the espresso machine to pull a shot, serve the previous guest before waddling back over to ring in your order, grab your drink, then finally finish the transaction. I've been tolerating this for months but what just made me review is the fact that she told me I can't enter my Safeway card number. What? I didn't even ask for a reason, I just paid full price because I need to leave. On my way out I saw she didn't even ring up one of my items. I've have stoned teens serve me with more urgency than the am crew here. I kept track of time today and it took over 15 minutes for 0/2 clerks to successfully serve me with one guest in front of me. I also work service as a side gig and empathize heavily with blue collar workers as the child of immigrant parents but there's just a certain level of incompetence that is tolerable before you give up on them. I go here a lot because it's open 24 hours and pretty close to my house. Because of this, I see a couple of the employees pretty often. Most are helpful and friendly. Today I had a cashier I was unfamiliar with. I should've known he was going to be sub-par because he was leaning with his elbows on the belt, on his phone, not even trying to hide it. Even when I started putting my items down, he continued on the phone until I finished. He rang up my items and I stepped onto the escalator and looked at my receipt. I got 2 items from the half off section and only one was given a discount. I went back to the register and told him my item wasn't discounted. "Yeah I did." I told him he did one but not both. He took my receipt, let out an exasperated sigh as if I was the one who was inconveniencing him for his mistake, then called another employee over. He was instructed to give me back the money in cash. He handed it to me in silence- no apology, no explanation, nothing. I told him a sorry would've been appropriate and he laughed to himself and took the next customer. Rude. Otherwise, I'm fine coming here. They could do better with opening checkout lines at night (self checkout closes and they usually only have one person on the register). I like the convenience and the supply is decent for a smaller store. read more

I live next door so I am forced to shop here often though I wish I didn't. There are a few issues, but the biggest one is the LACK OF STAFF!!! Management, what are you doing? I have NEVER gone into this store and been able to find someone to point me in the right direction or gotten help at the self-checkout in fewer than 10 minutes. It is infuriating and makes me feel unimportant as a customer. Today I write this review as I'm standing in line at the self checkout, waiting for help for 30 minutes (yes, you read that right!) because the assistant has had to go to the customer service desk, checkout counter, and help 3 other customers. Not to mention, she then "greened" my light without ever coming over to see what I needed. Thanks for nothing. I hope you either hire sufficient, better trained staff or Giant puts you guys out of business. read more

Just discovered this store today for the first time. Don't come to Wheaton much anymore. The store was clean, well lit, very pleasant and quiet. The checkout line was short and the cashier was not over friendly, but not at all offensive. Safeway had a fantastic beef sale today. I saved a bundle. I think the store is relatively new. A good thing - the garage. 90 minute free parking for Safeway. Also, no ticket to leave behind or lose. This is great for older seniors who might simply drop the ticket and can't pick it up. I'll start by saying that the staff have always been helpful here but there are so many negatives I feel compelled to write a review. The bathrooms are filthy. Locks in the women's room don't work, smells like urine, toilet paper holders ripped off walls. The place rarely has carts available, and the Tide laundry detergent and some men's bath products are behind lock and key - you have to ask customer service to unlock it. To top it all off, after a couple of months I noticed that our grocery bill was much higher at this store than from Giant and even Whole Foods. This is the only grocery store within walking distance of our home and I can't tell you how disappointing it is that they price gouge this community. Safeway corporate should really take a closer look at this store. read more

This Safeway is old - even the sign is washed out and drooping. If you consider the Safeway chain like a family, this is the neglected, ugly child that the parents make live in the basement so that he doesn't scare the guests. And of course, they have a number of remarkable, good-looking children that they like to splurge their money on and boast about, but this one gets the scraps they shove under the door and no sunlight. Seriously, this place needs a face lift worse than Hillary Clinton (sorry to throw you under the bus there, Hil). I feel like I've stepped into the '80's when I'm here. The Safeway is shaped like a airplane hangar and it doesn't have the inventory or the staff of any other Safeway that I've been to. The homeless guy muttering, "They'll kill you, they kill all of you..." kind of creeped me out as we entered, but we had to grab a couple of things and I wasn't going to let his crazy talk deter me. I felt so disappointed...we were trying to get some fruit; anything organic. They don't have it here. I don't think they have any organic produce and their spread is pretty disappointing. They don't even have a full-size bakery, deli, whatever....they don't have it. It's good for a quick stop to get something frozen, but don't expect this Safeway to be nice like the newer ones. I went to Safeway in Wheaton on Georgia Ave this evening to get a birthday balloon for my grandson's 4th birthday tomorrow. Unfortunately I came after the floral & balloon department was closed. However, Tyrone one one of the very helpful Safeway employees came to my aide and got the special balloon I needed by contacting the off duty department head at home who walked him through the process. This Safeway, in the basement and first floor of a newly built high-rise apartment building, replaced an earlier free-standing Safeway at the same location. This review will be pretty long because it is a major mix of good and bad. Mostly, they had some very good ideas, but in the execution they fouled things up. For example, they have an exceptional variety of gourmet cheeses, not quite up to the level of a Whole Foods, but far above most Safeways and Giants in the area. And they've hired a cheese expert to help answer people's questions. But she's there only two days a week. People who are not familiar with all the varieties of cheese are not going to show up only on Tuesdays and Thursdays; they will be there every day. They should have someone there full time (or at least 5 days a week, but 7 would be better, even if they had to hire two people to split the job). They have a nice self-serve soup bar. But while it gives a choice of 4 soups at any time, the 4 are rotated from a selection of perhaps 6 or 7 all told. I've seen label cards for kinds of soup they've never had, like beef Stroganoff soup or Italian wedding soup; it would have been nice to put them up as actual choices sometime. Instead, although some of the soups are very good, one soon gets tired of the lack of variety. If you're going to rotate the choices at all, you need more than 6 or 7 kinds from which to pick 4. And while discussing the soup bar, there is a major problem: the ladles are very long-handled, and it is almost impossible to avoid banging them into the sneeze-guards, spilling soup all over the place. I have been told that the sneeze-guards are a requirement of the County's health laws; I have no problem with that, but I am sure that the length of the ladles is not specified by the County, and if they were around half what they are, it would be much more convenient. And they have, near both the cheeses and the soup bar, a deli area where you can, for $6 plus tax, get a "combo" of two side dishes and one main dish. The only problem is that which of the items are sides and which are main dishes does not seem to be clearly marked. They frequently have a seafood salad, and someone I know has taken it as a main dish, but on one occasion had to argue with a staff member, who insisted that it was a side dish. However, when I asked a staff member (presumably a different one) whether the seafood salad was a main or side dish, I was told it was a main dish. Someone needs to label the main dishes and the side dishes, and enable the customers to be certain which is which. Another gripe I have, at least in the late morning/early afternoon when I usually come here, is that they never have enough cashiers, perhaps a conspiracy to force people to use the self-service check-out machines (though I will normally avoid the self-service aisles like crazy, because I don't know how to handle things like non-bar-coded items such as salad bar selections, for example). Frequently when I'm on an express line I have to wait behind someone with $100+ worth of stuff, because none of the regular lines are open, or on the other hand the express line may not be open, so with two salad bar selections and a soup or such I have to get on a regular line and still wait behind a customer with a $100+ bundle. Ad sometimes there is no cashier in place and I have to wait until one shows up! And yet, there is so much good -- the variety of cheeses, the Starbucks (with its associated cafe area), and such -- that I keep coming back to this Safeway. read more

Convenient location, free parking under the building. Grabbed four items around 9pm super quickly and waited literally 20-25 minutes to check out. It took them 10-15 minutes to open more lines and everybody seemed annoyed they were working. They did have everything I needed, but the wait alone made me unlikely to return. This place is so much better than the other Safeway before. So new and convenient in Wheaton. The staff in the meat section is so helpful, according to my mom. She buys the meat. And they have options when it comes to Hispanic food which is awesomeeee! Ice cream is great. Just hope they had a bit more options. Love that Starbucks is right there. It's a 50/50 there with your drink tho. You'll either get it just right or it'll give you chills. I ordered a mocha fray and it was nasty. They replaced it tho. read more

There are a few undeniably good things about this Safeway. It's nearby, has WiFi, and open 24/7. Also, like most Safeways, there is a Starbucks and this location has indoor and outdoor seating. Even with all this in mind this location manages to be terrible. Homeless people sleep, hang, and beg outside rendering the outdoor seating useless. Not only do many of them spend the night outside; they sleep late into the day. Where's security? Most of the staff seems friendly, but the cashiers are ignorant and unprofessional. I've witnessed several incidents with them being argumentative with coworkers and customers alike. read more

I am thankful for this new Safeway in the Wheaton neighborhood. Firstly: its location is SO convenient. It's walking distance friendly for me (yay), and has easy metro access at Wheaton station for those who travel underground. The parking garage has plenty of spots available and very well lit, so I can make a quick stop when returning on my commute from work. Basically, I feel like they built it to cater to me. I guess that isn't *really* true, but it's nice to feel like that may be the case. The staff has been 5 stars of awesome every time I've visited since the store opened. I am very impressed with their helpfulness and friendliness. The stock of the items, quality and availability of produce, and weekly sale items are all terrific. I'm going to keep coming back, and with the great service and quality, I'm sure the rest of the area is going to catch on and enjoy the Safeway, too! read more

The selection of products in the store is quite decent, and the prices are reasonable. The hours are real fine: 24x7 almost every day of the year. Warning: The condition of the men's bathroom is among the most horrible -- read: disgusting -- I have ever seen anywhere. (I have not seen the women's bathroom.) Appearances do matter. This is a fairly new store but has managed to take on an older more worn out look. The escalator is often not in working order. The bakery has not had a working slicer for their bread the past month. I think the employees in this store are mostly unmotivated to keep up appearances and do not know how to be helpful to customers. The meat case selection is small and limited. These are just a few reasons I do not frequent this Safeway. It's unfortunate for me since I live very close by. read more

I love the Safeway store itself, it's so brand new and the workers are super helpful but the Starbucks inside of it.... Horrible service. Sometimes I think the baristas are retarded. They can't make drinks to save their lives. I once to a salted caramel mocha frappachino and all they gave me was blended ice with syrup. I was too through and today when I decided to give them. Chance, it took the dude almost 10 minutes to make my drink due to the excessive horseplay and just stupidness then he slams down my java chip frapp with whipped cream and chocolate oozing out the top like a damn volcano and he didn't even hive me eye contact or speak to me. The pharmacy here is AMAZING! They are very fast and efficient, and Dr. Kakar is a magician at giving vaccines (totally painless!). I highly recommend you use their pharmacy when needed! Get your flu shots everyone!! read more

I love the parking garage on the lower level. There is always space. I find the store a bit more expensive than Aldi's but also less people when I go there. The fruits and vegetables look fresh and I have never had a problem. If I ask a store employee for something they have always been helpful and courteous. read more

This safeway is right underneath my apartment building so I feel that I may be a little biased. However, it is also BRAND NEW, 24 hours, has a starbucks inside, a coinstar, AND a redbox. Plus, it's right next to the Wheaton metro station and the Wheaton Mall - awwwweeeessssommmee! There is underground free parking underneath the store. Also, if you need wine or beer, a new place just opened like right next to it (plus the old crappy place across the street that was there, ha). read more
