Went for the weekly buffet that is open every Saturday 11-2, which can be found next to the Ramada hotel in downtown Boise. After walking in, we became pretty disappointed. Dirty tables, dirty floor, no fresh veggies or salad bar area. Sauces and chutneys are not on any kind of ice, just sitting out on the open counter. Hot food was just room temp in the metal trays, didn't have much flavor and was sadly quite bland. Pakora is not in any kind of veggie patty, just strings of greasy fried onion bits. Paneer tikka masala is absolutely floating in a thick layer of oil, not many entree options to choose from. It's clear Naan is not cooked fresh, very dense and crunchy, heated from frozen. For a meal I was very much looking forward to enjoying after seeing such high praises, I cannot understand how people are giving such complimentary reviews! And paying **$17** per person! I had the good fortune to meet Andrea when I visited. She recommended the Butter Chicken. It was so much better than I was expecting. After 3 days of eating fast food and salads on the road in a Idaho road trip, we as a family of 3 were craving for Indian and this restaurant was the one of the two open on Sunday evening. Went into the empty restaurant and there was no one. Patiently waited for 15 minutes, tried "excuse me is there someone" for around 20 times with no use. Then called hotel number and Andrea came out. She explained there was no one and she was washing dishes. Accepted. We ordered Tandoori Roti, Naan, Veg korma and Dum Biriyani. After 15 minutes, we got our food. Naan and Roti were ok but korma had no salt and was cold on inside and hot in outside which meant it was heated up from the freezer. We asked about salt and we were given salt sachets. OMG :(. The lesser I say about dum biriyani, the better. It looked like they tried to scratch the vessel it was cooked to take the remains. There was no side as I was told raita is over and I was given coconut chutney as a side for biryani. Are you guys serious? One touch of coconut chutney to mouth and I had to wash my mouth to get rid Of the pungent and horrible feeling. I have eaten in a lot of Indian hotels but this was taking the atrocity to a different level. Our stomachs churned till the next morning. Horrible food and abysmal quality. Go at your own risk and if you do not value your money. I do not wish to complain about other reviewers but Most of the reviews mention decor and waiter Andrea. She was good and it was no fault of hers and I even gave her a good tip but I believe the most important thing in a restaurant is the food. Leave that aside and any amount of hotel appearance and customer friendliness do not really matter Will never visit again. I had ordered a vegetarian take out from this restaurant. The restaurant looked very spacious and clean when I went to pick up the food. They have good Indian decor. Their samosa chaat tasted really good. Had also ordered garlic naan and malai kofta. The garlic naan was great. I felt the malai kofta was a little bland for my taste. This is an odd duck. If you read through the other reviews both the 5 and 1 star reviews bring up valid points. In a town with limited ethnic cuisine this place is fine and I hope they thrive but, not all the pieces are working Pros: wide menu with a number of options. Curries are flavorful, a couple of adventurous dishes, normal staples, nice service (army of 1!!) Cons: location (restaurant in a travel's hotel, rougher spot, rougher crowd), some problems with the food, most notable being days old rice and shamefully small curry portions. Naan is below par too, likely pre made and reheated. For takeout or pass-thru, it's good. Hard to recommend in its current state, but with a push/refresh this place could easily rock. read more

This is our 2nd time to visit the Saturday buffet at Saffron & will be our last. We'll never patronize a restaurant where the waitress stops us from getting dessert from the buffet based on the fact that she had already put the bill on the table. Never mind that my husband was still eating his lunch. Never mind we were there for less than 1 hour. Never mind that we haven't gone up to the cashier to pay the bill. In a loud voice which nearby diners can clearly hear, she asked me to put the plate back as I can't "get more food as I've already cashed out". When I tried to explain we haven't paid & I'm just trying to get dessert, she said that's the policy. This "policy" wasn't posted anywhere in the restaurant. I checked. No food is good enough for us to suffer that level of rudeness. When we went to pay, it was the same waitress & I asked if we can speak w/the manager, she said she was the manager & loudly stated customers understand that once you "cash out", you can't go back to the buffet. I asked where was this policy posted & she said "everybody knows that". Horrible, horrible, horrible attitude & policy. Never again. read more

The service was great. Adriana was helpful with the menu for my father in law who hasn't had much experience with Indian food. The food was kinda mediocre. I really like Indian food. We ordered the basics like butter chicken and chicken tikka masala so my father in law could get a taste for it. He didn't really like it and judged the entire cuisine on this experience. Which is a shame because good Indian food is really good. Maybe it was just an off day? Maybe my expectation of good Indian food is a bit high for Boise Idaho? I mean it wasn't bad. Nan - thin, flimsy and dry. Samosas - an order consists of two. Skimpy. Mutgh Tikka - some of the dryest chicken I've ever had from an Indian restaurant. The basmati rice was never delivered. I know when the chef AJ reads this he is going to do a small dance hehehe. Well when he cooked special Jain food for me my heart was doing back flips. My husband and I were on a road trip and we had Boise as a pit stop for skiing at Bogus Basin. We were thrilled to see plenty of Indian restaurants and decided to try Saffron because of its reviews. We both are vegetarian and I have some additional food restrictions like I can't eat any root vegetables like onions, potatoes, garlic etc. Thats my jain way of life!! Well when were placing my order and I was explaining that I can't eat certain vegetables Corny jumped and said are you a Jain too..... and me on the other end was like open mouthed and I am like how in the world do you know about this.... She explained that she had a family come in the other day with the exact same restrictions and that she learned it from them. I just knew it I was in great hands. The chef AJ made me an amazing meal. Truly I was thanking god so much that I picked this restaurant!! Corny, her daughter and AJ were such kind folks, we all chatted few minutes and he even gave us complimentary desserts! I think this place will be stellar after the kinks are worked out. I was sat immediately but waited patiently for about 15 minutes to order. It wasn't busy (2 other tables total) but finally someone took my order. During my ordering, I was asked if I really wanted to get that because that is what everyone gets. He said there are other things on the menu that aren't hot. I thought it to be a strange question. I also mentioned the coupon on Yelp but I was told it had to be over $30.00. My food was delivered and I was able to start to enjoy it, cheese naan yum by the way. My water glass was empty the whole time and I had to flag someone down each time I wanted more water. Each time waiting a few minutes for a fill when I should have just walked over to the water station and grabbed a pitcher that was sitting 10 feet away, I didn't want to be rude. Next time I will go grab it. When I was ready to go and I asked for the check and a to-go box and it took about 15 minutes to get both. About every 3 minutes she said, I will be right back. She said that about 5 times. I will be back and I hope things are ironed out. My food was good but the service pretty bad. Atmosphere is that of a continental breakfast at a hotel just with dimmed lights. There is a long counter that has everything sat on it that could be partitioned off to make it more welcoming. They will get it and when they do, this place will be a regular stop for Indian food. read more

This is my 4th time here and the last. I had been having a great time there. The food used to be so good. Not this time at all. The food was undercooked, so I told one of the servers. They took it back and cooked it more which is a big mistake for an indian dish! They broke the rice - it looks like a rice pudding and the chicken still was undercooked. Apparently, There was a computer error and they didn't receive our order until 5:40. I walked in at 5:45. I waited until 6:40 for my to go order. That being said, I genuinely believe that it was a glitch, based on the line of people waiting on to go orders. This place was near our hotel, within the Ramada. I wasn't sure at first, but the hostess was very inviting. I'm not a huge fan of Indian food, yet we tried a wide variety of the menu: vegetarian, lamb, they even fit in special dietary restrictions (vegan, low fat) for one in our party. After picking my grandma up from the airport. We were hungry and decided to try something new. At first glance the place was cute even though it's in the lobby of a hotel. We were greeted by our waitress and order our food shortly after. Over 45 minutes later, we finally received our simple appetizer, samoas chaat which wasn't even the amount of 2 we were told we were going to receive. Then we finally received our food over an hour and a half later after the appetizer, and it wasn't even what we ordered. I ordered one dish, my grandma ordered one as well and I ordered one of each of the chutney.. We received three dishes with no chutney?? For $14.99 and $15.99 (plus the extra the dish we didn't order AND the chutney we never received) our dishes had barely 4 pieces of meat in them, and I was so let down being from an Indian family. There was also a gentleman next to us which told the waitress that the rice he ordered wasn't up to par, and she had no sympathy whatsoever. I am so let down that this restaurants seems to pride itself on Indian cuisine and rips you off for the small dishes with no meat and poor service. I would rather go to the Bombay in Boise! Had they made things right and acknowledged the fact that they took entirely way too long plus served us small portions things may have been different. This place is so unhygienic!!!!!! Got my silverware and it was as disgusting as if I had fallen into the pits of the Sarlacc and was being slowly digested over 1000 years as Bobba Fett has. The service was slower then Obi Wan would even dare to travel across the galaxy l (anyone who knows knows he doesn't prefer speed.) I was at the Tap and Barrel when I ordered food from Saffron. Both places are owned by the same owner. I ordered the Tandoori Mix Plate which was really good. Why the one star? One of the cooks from Saffron came to the bar and after a brief introduction started using really vulguar language in Hindi directed at me. This was completely unprovoked. This was my previous Review - The briyani could be better and needs more spices rather the rose flavor. The quantity is not much for the expensive price. Tandoori is really good and its yummy.
