The people that we spoke with both on the phone and at pick up were very knowledgeable about gluten in the food (almost everything except the naan, most appetizers, and 1-2 other entrees were gluten-free). Coming from Philadelphia, my wife and I moved to Ambler with high standards for food and drink. Saffron Indian Kitchen matched and exceeded the best Indian restaurants in the city. We shared a cheese and spinach croquette special and chicken tikka masala. Of course, we had garlic naan to dip in the entree sauces. I just ordered take out from this place which was awesome cause I work up the street. I never gave this place much thought but I'm so glad I decided to go here. This is the first time I've eaten Indian food and I will definitely have it again. I ordered the Chana punjabi which was spiced perfectly, a little heat but not overpowering. My lunch came with amazing lentil soup, mango chutney, basmati rice, and a small salad. I wish I had gotten some naan though after one of my coworkers was raving about it. Small hidden Indian gem in Ambler downtown. Chicken butter, lamb, and Biryani were very delicious and tasty. Their combo of spices is the secret to such a great food. My wife and I are Indian food junkies. So we heard about this from a friend and went to it for lunch on their invitation. It is the standard Indian menu, with some intriquing additions. They have Dosas, which I have not seen in many locations. We ordered some as an appetizer and enjoyed it along with a side of sambar. Neither of which I've ever ordered in a restaurant before. Although, I have had them in friends homes. The next round were traditional Indian food fare. For the table we ordered Chicken korma, Aloo Gobi, Lamb Biriyani and Malai Kofta. Each was well flavored and cooked well. I only tried the Korma and Kofta. Both of the sauces had some sweetness to them, that I have not previously encountered. It had the traditional flavor with this addition. It made it very nice. We also ordered a wonderful spinach and cheese naan. This was something I do not normally find around the area. The ambiance is bright and cheery. Very colorful location. The waiter could be slightly more friendly, as we were the only guests for lunch this day. So he could not claim it was overly busy. If you want a quaint Indian restaurant with a mix of standard food items and some different Indian food items not normally served, give this place a try. read more

Food is ok but service and ambience are lacking. This was our first visit to Saffron. I made a reservation and much to my surprise the couple who walked in with us (no reservation) were given a very nice table and we were seated at a tiny table right in front of the kitchen door next to a party of screamers. The employee who seated me muttered something about this being all that they had left. Clearly it is a big mistake to make a reservation at this place. I lost count after the staff smacked in my shoulder 47 times... not an enjoyable dining experience. The food was ok. I do not recommend the tomato soup. The malai kofta was a little bland; the dumplings themselves were quite nice but the sauce was disappointing. Tandoori chicken was a bit dry but the portion is substantial. Breads were fine. Really the situation in the dining room was so distracting that it was difficult to enjoy the food. The tables are so close together that I could easily have eaten off the woman's plate at the table beside us without her noticing. Servers are sullen and unpleasant. One was talking to himself angrily the entire night. it was a little bit alarming. Just an angry and unpleasant vibe in general that does not encourage a return visit. The front of the house staff could not possibly be more indifferent and dismissive. I can't see any reason to return. read more

Having this place recommended by a fellow Indian and seeing a majority of the positive reviews, I was hoping for a 4+ star experience. Sadly, I was unimpressed given the hype and the price. We ordered some basics (samosa, gobi aloo, chili chicken type dish). The food looked like it would be flavorful. The guy at the front door even boasted about the quality, "food like no other", etc. My hopes and dreams were shattered after a few bites. Oh man, this place was just what I needed. My husband had wanted to see The Iron Lady for a couple of months, and the Ambler Theatre was one of the few places still showing it. To make it more of a date night, I decided to make a reservation at Saffron before we headed to the movie. We had a bit of a rocky start - the place is right on the street, but the sign is up fairly high and it's easy to miss. If you're in a rush, make sure you're not walking so quickly that you pass it three times like we did! The atmosphere wasn't quite what I'd had in mind, but it was perfect for a married couple just wanting a change of scenery. I have to be honest, though, don't take a lady here for a first date. She'll enjoy the food, but she will not be impressed with the decor! We split one of the special appetizers, and it was excellent. Unfortunately, it's been long enough that I don't remember exactly what our entrees were, but my husband had something with lamb and I had a curry with shrimp. Both were delicious, and I even had some left over for lunch the next day. We had mango ice cream for dessert... mmmm! It's a BYOB, and even with a very nice tip, the total was much less than I'd budgeted for. I recommend giving this place a shot! Definitely make a reservation if you're going on a Friday, though. read more

Saffron Indian Kitchen- Had been here for couple of times at Ambler near to septa station. Ambiance is nice, service is good, location is good, and importantly food is fine. Owners are telugu speaking and maintain the restaurant well, we tried out biryani, rotis, nans, veg curry and chicken curry they all were fine and spicy. We had told the waiter to make it extra spicy and they did it. However, i still feel they have to improve a lot on the flavors, and quality of food also rates are expensive when compared with other Indian restaurants. I grew up in south India and my grandma's Indian cooking sets a pretty high bar. However, this has to be the best Indian food outside of my grandmothers. I love the korma in whatever style you choose, vegetable, shrimp, chicken, it's all fantastic. The naan is fantastic. The biriyanis are all the rage. Saffron has the best lamb preparation around, the meat is tender, and the spices never over power the gaminess of the meat. The food was just...good. I ordered the Tandori Shrimp Masala and my cousin (practically sister) ordered the Goan Shrimp Curry. Both were brought out in little gray bowl-ish looking dishes. Then they gave us a larger one with the Saffron Basmati Rice. Alongside the Spinach and Cheese Naan Bread. Now I was under the impression that we would be served an actual "entree". It was not labeled "Tapas" Style. Also I could definitely make a better version of it - the shrimp were slightly over done because they were so curled up. Also where is the mango chutney? That was the aspect I was most excited about and we didn't get any. As for the service: awkward. When we first walked in (with a reservation), he just motioned for us to seat ourselves with "Is that okay?" We agreed and sat at a two person table. About three minutes later he comes over and tells us to move to another table, which was for seated for four people. Then added "Is that okay?" We were like uh...sure." I mean it was fine, but like no one was there, and why would you move us to a table meant for more people? Weird. In the begging of the meal my cousin said "This is a BYOB right". He responded, "Yes, would you like me to open that bottle for you?" She said sure and he replied "Do you have a bottle opener?" She said, "No, I don't, uhhh...". He says "This is a BYOB and you have to bring your own opener." She goes "Oh okay, well I don't have one so we'll just have some..." He says "I'm just kidding, I've been taking acting lessons so I was practicing." Ummm... for real dude? Really? A waiter should never be a bother/ interruption, and this guy was for sure. When he was around it was always "Can I take these plates? Can I move this plates? Can I...? Can I...? Are you...? Are you...? Like OMG just be quiet and if we need you we will call you over. Thank God the food was good because otherwise the restaurant would off gotten only 1 star. I'm thinking that if I am in the mood for this food another time and I don't want to cook it myself MAYBE I will ORDER OUT from here. I've been looking for a fine indian cuisine after I graduated from my college town that only had 1 decent one in town. My first visit was about 2 weeks ago, and I really loved this place. Freshly cooked, friendly waitstaff, nice and clean atmosphere. My friend is really afraid of trying new foods, especially ethnic cuisines, but she literally gobbled everything up. My friends and I went on Labor Day, immediately after they opened. By 6pm, the place was getting pretty crowded. I'm not sure if that was because it was a holiday or if that is how it normally is. Really delicious standard Indian fare served in an informal bistro atmosphere. I give an edge to this place over other Indian joint in the area because of the extra flair on the menu, with daily specials that are generally fantastic. Korma sauce was creamy and beautifully spiced. Especially enjoyed the appetizer special which was spinach leaves flash fried with a little batter with chickpeas and a lovely tangy vinegary spicy kick. A must try! The best Indian restaurant in Pennsylvania!!! My friend wanted Indian cuisine so we decided to try Saffron, it was one of the best decisions of our lives. The food was excellent, perfectly seasoned with the right amount of spice. I had the chicken Murg Korma which is a cashew sauce with the bismata rice. It easy absolutely delicious and the portions were sizeable where we could leave some for lunch for the next day. My friend had the chicken Tikka massala which is a tomato based sauce. It was equally excellent. We had garlic buttered Naan that was so fresh and delicious. I was never a fan of Indian food until I went to #saffron. Now I am a believer. If you are in the area it is worth the trip you will not be disappointed I promise. The staff was also excellent taking the time out to explain the dishes to us and ensuring that we were pleased. The packed up everything for us and the price was very reasonable. Our left overs next day tasted divine, it was like we were at the restaurant all over again. They have good Indian food. Their garlic nam (Indian bread) and vegetable samosas as appetizers are quite good. Their Chicken Tikka Masala was also quite creamy and yummy.
