This Indian food was the best that I've had in this area, which covers the 5 or six townships in Mont Co and a couple more townships in Bucks Co. Although Ambler is congested along Main St most of the time, you can find parking somewhere not too far away. I was a Palace of Asia enthusiast since the mid 90's, before I even hit my formative teenage years. One could say I had quite the refined palate at a young age. After years of frequenting Palace of Asia for many years (after its declining quality and service) I found Saffron in my native land of Ambler, PA. Great little byob in Ambler. Short on space but good service and good food. It's certainly not a place you'd take a date or a customer. But it's a cute little place to have some yummy Indian food. Saffron is a great little restaurant in Ambler that offers carefully prepared food with layers of flavors. Last night was my second time and I was pleasingly reminded of the vast amount of spices and seasonings that go in to Indian cuisine. I will be the first one to admit that I have no clue on their authenticness to India, but who cares when you leave satisfied and happy? My entree was shrimp with a curry-cream cheese sauce and my husband ordered lamb. Both were served over the traditional basmati rice. We shared onion naan and plain dosa as appetizers. Both were served with various "relishes". I was not as much of a fan of the naan and dosa this time around (could have been because of the type of sauces that we ordered), but my entree more than made up for it! I think with the vast amount of textures and flavors that Indian food has to offer, it is a bit of trial and error when it comes to finding your favorites. We finished with a sampling of home-made pistachio and mango ice cream. My favorite was the pistachio. Very delicious. The restaurant is BYOB, which is perfect in my opinion, and the prices are very reasonable. Although we have never ordered take out from Saffron, I think it would be the perfect place to do so. The food is offered in a way that is both great for sharing and great for enjoying solo. The entrees could also be reheated without fully destroying the dish. My only recommendations would be to better keep up on the appearance of the space. The bathroom was showing it's frequent use and the storage closet was open displaying dirty mops and the brooms. In the dining room I noticed that the walls were scuffed in several places. May seem like minor details, but minor details add up! Overall- good food, good prices, friendly staff! I was in London last week, which apparently has more Indian restaurants than Mumbai. Did I get to any? Sadly...no...there never seemed to be one nearby when we finally got around to dinner. So I came home with a hard-core craving for Indian. This hit the spot. It's cute inside and service was pleasant, but they did forget our naan (til we realized it, we were too full anyway). We started with samosas and onion bhajia...both were tasty. I had malai kofta and hubs got tikka masala. Good flavor, right amount of heat...and Indian rice just rocks. Loved Saffron. Saffron is the first non-buffet Indian restaurant I've been to, so I'm not an expert, but everything was great. The menu is laid out clearly and they explain what is contained in each dish (their online menu also has photos of each dish if you are a newbie and want to do a bit of pre-planning). They didn't mention how spicy some of the items were which was a pleasant surprise for my husband when it came to his chicken dish. I had the Chana Punjabi and it was great -- not too spicy. I would say if you're sensitive to spice, ask before you order. We also had an order of vegetable samosas and onion bhajia. Both appetizers were delicious, hot, and quick to emerge from the kitchen. Naan was not included with the meal so we ordered the onion and garlic varieties of naan and enjoyed both (they were $2-3 per basket depending on the variety). The prices were very reasonable and the service was good. We arrived there around 6:15 as a walk-in and were met with a line out the door and close to an hour wait. We ended up making a reservation for later in the evening and going to a bar to have a pre-dinner drink. We were a little early arriving back at the restaurant for our reservation so we had to wait a bit, but we were seated by the time of our reservation. I would definitely recommend a reservation in advance if possible -- it's not a huge place and while the service is prompt, patrons seemed to linger over wine and their food. read more

I went to Saffron Indian Kitchen last week for dinner and was absolutely disappointed with the food. I ordered the chicken tikka masala which was all dark meat and gross and the chicken was not even grilled as the tikka should be. The paneer mutter was not bad but could be better. When we asked, they made the dal makhani for us even though it was not on the menu but it tasted nothing like dal makhani, very bland, and wasn't even the right combination of lentils but it was my fault to have asked. The price is not bad but i wasn't impressed, there are better Indian restaurants out there. I will not be going back! read more

Very delicious food that's balanced in spices. And the staff is very friendly and hardworking, they will take good care of you. You cannot go wrong by choosing Saffron. I've been to Saffron three or four times and it is a solid option for Indian food in the Ambler area. The staff is attentive and polite, which is pretty easy considering there are maybe fifteen tables in the whole restaurant. I love the intimate setting, although occasionally the loud music they play becomes slightly disturbing. They are quick to refill your water or bring you more rice whenever you need it. Their lachha paratha is some of the best I've ever had, and their food on the whole is decent. I usually get the malai kofta, which is ridiculously good. The other day I tried the dal, and I was disappointed to find it quite watery, almost like soup. It sure was tasty, but difficult to spoon over rice and nigh impossible to dip naan into. They also need to work on the consistency of their spice. Sometimes things are pretty spicy, other times there is nary a hint of Scovilles anywhere to be found. If I didn't want any flavor, I would go to a damn Applebee's. They don't ask you how spicy you want something, so you have to either accept what you get, or attempt to accurately communicate your desired level of hotness. Warning 1: Like many Indian restaurants, the descriptions of their dishes are vague, so if you have food allergies, you will want to inquire before you order. Warning 2: If you want to go on a weekend night, make a reservation. They get very busy. read more

Let me start by saying, I have held a few jobs where I worked around Indian food. I wasn't exactly treated the best by these people, the circumstances that I got "layed off" under were a bit questionable. Regardless of my less than savory experience, you won't find Indian cuisine like this this ANYWHERE in this area. Start with the Onion Bhajis... or maybe the South Indian style potato roll up (Dosa). The main chef is a genius with his appetizer menu. Everyone loves a good vegetable Samosa as well, don't do yourself the injustice of never trying one. I have been a Vegan for a while, this spot offers a couple of dishes for us (try the Okra dish). For the meat/cheese lovers, before I became Vegan, I worked with this guy at his previous restaurant, and he is a genius with rice dishes. He also seems to know what he is doing with the like of Malai Kofta and anything involving Paneer! The hallmark of this place... they offer dessert! That's a huge selling point for anyone. The wait staff is awesome, though you can't see it, I can promise the kitchen is impeccable, the atmosphere is beautiful, it's located in a nice location, and you can get in and out as fast or comfortably as you like. What more can be asked for? I'd give this place more than 5/5 stars if I could! read more

Sorry to those folks who gave such raving reviews of this place, which is regrettably why I went there. The food is so less than mediocre. I was in the neighborhood on business. I tried Lamb Tikka Masala. I know that one won't immediately think of a suburb of Philly when it comes to Indian food, but this was really just too underwhelming. If you walked into an $8 lunch buffet indian restaurant in NJ, Tikka Masala would taste better than this. I grew up in India, so I think I know what it should taste like. I asked for some pickles and they charged me $2 for a spoonful of pickles. It was pretty good, but come on. read more

Looked for a place open on Christmas prior to our movie & this little gem was perfect for dinner! We got the chicken masala which was perfection! Chicken was perfectly seasoned with great sauce & rice on the side. The garlic naan bread was also perfectly paired with the meal & the service was also extremely polite & helpful with our meal selection. The chick peas were also great! The place is small but the dishes are delicious and reasonably price. They have a good lunch special and great seafood dishes. Last time I was there, I had the shrimp masala (I believe) soooo good. But that not on the lunch special. For the lunch special, I decided on the chicken masala dish, so good and it comes with a little side salad and what looked like crush beans in a sauce ( it tasted like black eye peas). This place is great. I was super skeptical about coming here at first because I am such a picky eater. But I am so glad that I tried it. I've been to Saffron probably a dozen times and I was never disappointed. The vegetable samosas are my favorite appetizer- they are so flavorful. The chicken tikka masala is my go-to dish here. I've also had the biryani which is great if you love rice. The ginger chicken was refreshing when I had it. You pretty much can't go wrong here with anything on the menu. Also, make sure you get the naan. It is delicious! I would definitely recommend Saffron to anyone looking to try something new and different on a night out in Ambler! read more

I expected good things from Saffron but boy, was I disappointed. The chicken pieces in the chicken tikka masala were so dry. My palak paneer was all sauce. The only redeemable dish was the lamb korma which was tender and flavorful. Besides that, it's hard for me to believe this place is Zagat rated. It is usually very hard to find an Indian restaurant that has high quality if ingredients used in their cooking, but Saffron defines fresh. Although the restaurant is very jammed and cozy inside, there is an overwhelming feeling that it is a family run business, and I'm always happy to see small restaurants thrive. For my meal, I had the Lamb Vindaloo. A few times I have ordered this, the spices were so overwhelming it was almost inedible, however they do warn you it is very spicy every time you order it. Unlike other times, the lamb vindaloo was perfect. It provided the heat I was looking for, with many succulent flavors that come from their unique blend of spices that one desires from an Indian restaurant. Along with our meal we had chicken dosa (which was delicious), garlic naan, and samosas. I couldn't expect more from a small BYOB in Ambler. The way it lost a star in the rating is the inevitable sense of crowdedness that one feels due to the fact the restaurant is so small. But it's easy to look past the fact when the food you're eating is so good. read more

Love the food at Saffron! Served family style with bowls of rice and entrees for everyone to share (or not to share). We stopped here on a whim while walking through downtown Ambler. It looked like a full house bit they were able to seat us without a reservation. We got the Butter Chicken, Paneer Tikka Masala, and Garlic Naan. Out of the two entrees, the Butter Chicken is definitely our favorite. The sauces are so delicious! We needed extra vessels to soak up the sauces so we ordered more naan and got more rice. I was turned onto Saffron a few months ago and we have been Huge Fans of it ever since. We haven't had a less then excellent lamb dish yet. Only one chicken dish was just OK, the others were excellent. The Garlic Naan is perfect. The portions of food were generous and priced reasonably. I am also a fan of B.Y.O.B.'s. I prefer to pair my own wines to the selections available, so that is a huge plus for us. Overall the food is excellent, service is very good and prices are reasonable. I only had their buffet on a Sunday. The place is good if you like mild food. It is a decent place, looks trendy and has good variety. It however lacks the punch, spice, life and taste one is looking for.. Even their chutneys lack the spice and punch.. very very mild. My boss took us to Saffron in Ambler on Thursday, December 22 for our staff lunch. It was a nice cozy restaurant. Tables could have been a bit bigger for 4 people. The naan and green sauce paired wonderfully. They have a lunch special that gives you more than enough for the price you pay. Unfortunately, I'm giving 3 stars because the Chicken Tikka Masala and rice pairing I ordered was very bland. I don't know if this was an off day, but I've had my share of Indian restaurants in Philadelphia and Saffron's was the blandest. Saffron is conveniently located on the main street (well..Butler pike) in Ambler and has good Indian food. Don't go there expecting a home cooked meal, it's your standard food with standard service. We got take out, the naan was much moister than other naan I've had (which was something that's a plus for me--I hate when it's too dry and crumbles!!) Big Plus: They lable the takeout containers to reflect the contents, so there's no confusion as to what's what. Overall: It's a good option for ambler, if you dont want to travel to North Wales or Blue Bell. I'll definitely order again because of the sheer convenience. read more

My parents discovered this place a long time ago, ever since I have been coming here . It's a very cute little place in Ambler with amazing Indian food . I have even brought friends here before who did not like Indian and now they love it ! The service is great . I recommend the the garlic Nann bread and shrimp curry . Savory, warm delicious best describes the food at Saffron. Our first time at Saffron we were greeted by a cheerful host who immediately showed us to our table. At 8 o'clock on a Saturday night I was a little concerned that the place wasn't packed. Alas, my fears work groundless. by the time we left at nine the place was rocking. Our waiter was helpful in pointing out popular and tasty dishes. We shared the appetizer special made with homemade cheese and chicken. Perfect for two people. The waiter was kind enough to ask how spicy we wanted our main course and each dish came perfectly spiced. I had the lamb and my wife had the chickpeas. Both were served with a fluffy bed of basmati rice in a savory, spicy tomato based sauce. The lamb cubes were extremely tender.
