I went there one time with my now ex girlfriend from India. I seriously doubt i go back. I absolutly love seafood. I ordered some shrimp dish. The price was almost $18 for a lunch plate!!!!!!! The rice was mediocore at best and was hard meaning not done. There were maybe 5 shrimp on the entire plate and it tasted so strongly of pepper I could not even taste anything else. I was extremly dissappointed. They also disconinued the lunch buffet which was a nice cheaper option (of course). The garlic nann was okay. My grandmother used to make better flatbread from scratch years ago in her own kitchen. The shrimp were like rubber bullets. They were overcooked and just not good at all. If this is what is served in India, I'll stick to mexican or Itilian from now on. This place is increadibly overpriced and overdecorated. Do not let the decor fool you like it did me. The food does not match the beautiful decor. I had high expections for that place looking as expensive as it does. Very dissappointed and will never return. read more

Incredible Indian food. We used to eat at Flavor of India (Olive and 270) and when they closed down, we were trying to find a go to restaurant. We tried them all and luckily found Saffron which is amazing and the food is delicious. Lots of vegetarian dishes as well as plenty of chicken dishes. I don't know where one of the other reviewers ate, but it could not have been at Saffron. The complaints about the service is rediculous. My grandson threw up on the main dining room floor and the owner didn't blink. We were trying to contain the situation and he said don't worry about it. He's a child and is just sick. I have children, too. They could not have been kinder. The food is fantastic and we are always asked how spicy we would like our food, on a scale of one to five. You will get what you ask for here and be very happy with your choice or they will make it right. We have been customers since they opened over 10 years ago. We will always come back! read more

Indian Buffet full of flavor. A great place to meet friends and enjoy a long lunch and multiple dishes. Every entree and side veggie tasted wonderful. My highlighted favorites included: spinach and chickpeas, tandoori chicken, spicy cauliflower with potatoes, and curry chicken and goat. When we walked in around 8:45PM there is no one at the reception and after waiting for few minutes the staff are not even greeting, very unpleasant atmosphere and also they are not willing to serve the food if we want to dine in and ordered us to take carry out. I have been to this place a few times, for lunch buffet and for dinner. I would definitely recommend coming here for dinner because the menu provides a ton of options and they are delicious. They have several types of naan and traditional Northern Indian dishes with veggies or meats. I never tried the Indo-Chinese section of the menu - just didn't feel like that would fit in well for some reason.. The dishes I have tried are always rather flavorful with those spices and delicious. For lunch buffet though, I wouldn't rave about it as they are your usual Indian restaurant buffet food. The selections were somewhat narrower compared to other places.. The quality is not as good as the dishes you get for dinner - smaller plates make a big difference. Overall, I'd recommend going for dinner, even better, with a group.. read more

OK- I just read Elaine M. review of Saffron. I will tell you that I was sitting right behind her yesterday at lunch. We do not know each other. I did witness the offensive way she was treated over a plate of some unfinished food. On my way out I stopped and said *Yelp It*. She said she was going to, so of course I have been looking to spot her review. I am updating my review to validate her poor review. After the way the man in question spoke to her, he did disappear never to be seen again. I too, left uneaten food as some of the things I opted to try did not appeal to my taste after sampling them. That is what comes along with offering a buffet. People often take things they may not eat. I have not eaten her in quite awhile, but I did notice business seemed slower than what I have seen before. Indian novice here. This is the third time I have officially been to an Indian restaurant. Not very adventurous, I know, but let me explain myself! In the beginning, I wasn't a believer. I'm not into spicy food and have always been hesitant towards Indian cuisine. This doesn't sit well with my better half who mega 's Indian so I am expanding my horizons. Saffron, you helped convert me! I had the pleasure of trying the Shrimp Tandoori with the "Assorted Break Basket."The Shrimp Tandoori was delish. The last Indian food I had was chicken tandoori. I think I liked chicken tandoori more but shrimp was a nice variant. I know tandoori is simple, but I'm working my way up the advanced Indian dishes. Give me time! As for the Assorted Bread Basket...I COULD LIVE OFF THIS STUFF. Naan is soooooo yum. I could eat it everyday. I know it's super simple but it's amazing. I tried this one type that had onions in between it, not my fav but still interesting. My favorite is garlic naan. I think more restaurants, Indian or not, need to serve naan. I mean, WHY NOT? Way better than boring old bread. I also got to try some of my girlfriend's "who knows what?" for leftovers! At first it was too spicy for me even though she only got a 2 (a 1-5 scale). However, it was much more bearable as leftovers. I cannot imagine eating anything above a 2 from here....toooooo spicy. The service and atmosphere at Saffron was wonderful. They asked multiple times if we were happy with everything. I never felt rushed and the service was fast. I understand why they have such great reviews on Yelp. Based on our recent experiences I am sport but would downgrade my rating. The taste of food has changed and so has the attitude of the staff. My favorite lamb spinach doesn't taste the same and most of the dishes have become mediocre as compared to St Louis standards. Experience that pissed me off: 1. Racist staff: if you are a white family, you will be treated with utmost care. If you are brown, they don't care much. Don't be surprised if you have to go and find the waiter around in order to take your order. 2. Filthy utensils: warning: smell before you eat. My and one of another friends glass smelled like fried chicken. Seems they just douse all glasses in some common soapy water and pull them out. 3. Unfriendly staff: when we complaint about the stinky glass. The waiter told us that oh it's because you ordered regular water. We are like: really, my wife glass is not stinking. He just went ahead and got us new ones. No sign of remorse or guilt and of course no apologies as well. When the manager stepped by, we explained him about getting a bad slow service, dirty utensils and an order of naan that took forever. Again, didn't bother to apologize and in a "taunt" jovial fashion told us that, next time I will make sure that all of us are around you, including the chef and the guy who cleans the utensils. This restaurant is going south. Needs some real attitude revamp, I wouldn't recommend anymore. read more

This restaurant is a fantastic. Our little family of four has been going here for a few years since we are trying to get our boys to experience new things. The food and service are exceptional. There is one waiter in particular who is extremely polite and professional in his manner and always provides impeccable service. The saag, samosas, lamb korma, biryani, and tikki masala are favorites among our bunch. I highly recommend this place in the strip center off Manchester and Barrett station. This week with college chum, arriving at 5:30 p.m. and just one other table of diners in the house. We skipped appetizers and went straight to the entrees. Dining partner got the chicken curry ($12.95), which is what she got last time we were there. She asked for 3 on the heat scale of 0-5. Oh boy! She really enjoyed this, but there was NO WAY I was going to cop a taste! I got goat kadahi ($14.95) -- goat with green pepper, onion and tomato, and asked for 2 on the heat scale. And it had a kick to it. The flavor combinations were terrific. Rich and deep. We both got naan -- she the garlic cheese naan, me the garlic naan. Yummy!! So garlicky, soft and delicious. Service was spectacular. The owner took our orders and came by a number of times to see how the meal was going. We both got to-go vessels. And as before, they gave both of us extra rice. Such a nice and generous touch. My leftovers lasted two more meals. There are so many more menu items I want to try!! read more

Visited Saffron for the first time in too long. This time for takeout. I called in an order at 3pm and it was ready to go at 5pm when they opened for dinner. First off parking is a breeze! Shocking how sparse this shopping center is. Especially since Burlington has now closed. Don't be deterred! This restaurant is fantastic! There is plenty of seating/tables. The host is always pleasant. Our order included Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Tikka, Lamb Rogan Josh, Chana Palak, Mushroom Saag, Palak Paneer, and Samosas. First off with our order the owner gave us plenty of rice. Which doesn't typically occur at all Indian restaurants. He was very generous. I did get all the dishes "mild" spicy as kids would be dining. OMG what a delightful meal. But the favorite of all my 4 girls was the Chicken Tikka Masala. Very smooth and creamy with a wonderful hint of spice. All the other dishes were very good as well. With nothing that was subpar. Now I am no indian food expert but knowing "asian" cuisine I felt all the dishes were very flavorful and appropriate. Also indian food is great as leftovers! Thank you Saffron. Keep it up. read more

Husband and I brought Teen 2 here for dinner the other night - she is our adventurous eater who loves Indian food. By the time we left she had declared that this is her new favorite Indian food restaurant. We started with the veggie samosa's, which are my favorite standard appetizer. They were served hot and full of delicious veggies. They were bigger than what I was used to, about the size of baseballs. That didn't stop me from hogging a whole one for myself while Husband and Teen 2 shared the other one. For dinner I had something that I don't remember the name of, but it translates to 5 types of lentils. It was fun to try some different varieties of the legume, and the sauce was spicy (flavor, not heat) and gingery (I know its not a real word, but it fits.) Their naan is probably the best I have ever had. It was fluffy, and had a great flavor. They make it in house and you can really tell. Definitely going to have to get in there and try their lunch buffet one of these weekends. read more

If I had gotten around to writing a review for Saffron after visiting there with the beautiful wife and the International Supper Club crew back in April, they would have gotten a solid five stars. But, after taking a half day off and traveling 20 minutes there for their lunch buffet yesterday, I have to dock them a couple of stars. I'll say that I'm clouded by what I consider to be the perfection of Mr. Curry's Downtown location -- you walk in, you pay, and you're on your own (disposable plates allow you to bus your own table, constantly refilled naan on the buffet, and even a self-service soda machine). Comparatively, Saffron keeps their lunch buffet like a restaurant -- plates need to be cleared, drinks have to wait to be refilled, and most importantly, naan is brought out to you (and no, we didn't get an offer for a second basket. That's not a good thing). Finally, while there were a decent amount of options on the buffet, they were, well, kind of boring. For example, the chicken curry lacked any oomph until I put some of their tasty hot sauce on it. And as another reviewer noted (but I forgot about) was that it's chicken only for their meat, which is just odd to me. Anyway, I'll highly recommend them for dinner (see Erin's and other ISC reviews), but for lunch? I've had better. read more

We such to the same free dishes totally when we come here but thoroughly enjoy them enough to always regret not going here when as go to other Indian restaurants. My friend and I met at Saffron on an early Friday evening to have dinner. The place was near empty (expected since we were eating like senior citizens), and we were warmly greeted by the host. We took our seats in the booth. I ordered a glass of wine (why not?), and we perused the menu. We split the Navaratan Korma, Kadhai Chicken, and the Assorted Bread Basket. It was a ton of food (and delcious leftovers), but we wanted to have plenty to try this being only my 3rd Indian food experience. I was very pleased with Saffron. The food was fantastic! Very flavorful and just the right amount of heat (we got mild, because I'm a wimp!). I think, unless we really want to continue exploring, we'll definitely return. The staff was very attentive, though almost creeply so at a couple points. Do NOT be fooled by this unassuming strip mall location. The food is worth the visit! read more

We were shopping in the area and needed to find somewhere to eat. Stopped at Saffron because of the good reviews and they didn't disappoint. The garlic cheese nan was amazing and I really liked that when they gave us an option for the spice level of our food that they didn't hold back when we said a level 3. 3 was pretty darn hot, can't image what a 5 would be. We visited during lunch one Friday, and found the buffet to be a good value. Maybe not the most choices ever in an Indian buffet, but tasty nonetheless. My favorite was the Palak Paneer (sort of spinach puree). I came here on 2/12/13 for with the ISC. the waiter knew the star rating and how many stars they had on yelp. I ordered the samosas, the chicken korma, peshwari naan, and rice pudding. the samosas were very good but spicy. Thank you to Kate who shared a bit of her raita with me. Next time I ordered the spicy samosas, I will order the raita. The yogurt based dip/sauce did cool the delicious spiciness of the samosa. The chicken korma really was good. I did not really find too many almonds in my dish, but is was still too good. They serve giant bowls of rice that definitely make the meal. The peshwari naan, is naan with cherry, cashews, almonds, raisins and coconut powder. This was the only thing that I felt like next time i would just order plain naan. It was not bad. I got the naan at India's Oven in Belleville, IL and it had cherries and the nuts and such baked in to the naan. I did not really like that here it was like a paste inserted in to the bread. I did like that the naan was soft and warm not like a cracker or pita chips that some places say is naan. the rice pudding was tasty. It is not the consistency that i am used to pudding having. It is more on the runny side. Not the thickness i am used to, but the taste is there. I will be back. I find myself in the West Co area quite often ad will keep Saffron in mind. read more

Great, cheap lunch buffet. Options were pretty limited: 2 chicken stew dishes (curry and tandoori), a few veggies, and 1 soup. My work crew went here for a team lunch. We've been here before but it always gets beat out by Flavor of India on Olive because it's closer to us. However..It beats out FOI for best Chicken Tikka Masala but only because it has a teeny bit more heat in it, which sets it apart from all of the contenders. And, if you didn't know, all Indian Buffets are judged by their quality of Chicken Tikka Masala. Bonus points for the buffets that serve it on days other than Friday. Flavor of India (flavor flave!) and Saffron both do this! Saffron brings the naan to your table which is a nice touch. Their naan is just plain though, it doesn't have any garlic or spices on it. The rice pudding like dessert is good, but not as good as Flavor Flaves because it doesn't have almonds in it and is a little too thick. Saffron always serves this vegetarian dish that has peas and carrots and cheese cubes which is a yummy compliment to the Chicken Tikka Masala. Their buffet doesn't have as many choices on it as does the other Indian Buffets (Mayuri, Priyaa, and Flavor Flave) but it does serve quality dishes that most people feel comfortable eating. The price is about the same as the others between 10 and 13 bucks. And the decor and music are nice and not overbearing. It usually only has a few people in it during lunchtime, but still attracts software developer dudes like every other Indian buffet in the west county Creve Coeur area. Months ago, we held International Supper Club at Saffron, and the staff treated us like we were the best guests they ever had. Everything that evening was wonderful - the food, the service, the company. We felt warm and appreciated, and many of us couldn't wait to return. I've personally revisited Saffron several times since then, and my fondness for the restaurant just keeps growing. I'm rarely out in West County during a weekday, but I managed to stop by twice for Saffron's lunch buffet. Though it isn't as massive as other Indian buffets, the Saffron buffet is high quality. The variety of dishes is quite appealing, and there are a ton of vegetarian options. I especially love that Saffron labels everything so that you can make an informed decision before you try something. Vegetarian items also are grouped together, which is really helpful. I also appreciated that two paneer dishes were available both times that I went; Indian places often only have none, or have mostly sauce with a tiny bit of paneer when they actually make a dish available. Saffron's paneer dishes on the buffet were absolutely brimming with the cubed cheese. What's more, Saffron employees bring out baskets of fresh naan to your table instead of putting it out on the buffet; no more fighting over the last piece of bread or resigning yourself to stale naan! I've had dinner twice at Saffron since this spring. The menu of appetizers and entrees is quite extensive. Again, Saffron is very thoughtful when it comes to highlighting vegetarian options. Vegetarian apps get their own section, as do vegetarian entrees. Moreover, the vegetarian sections come first! Yep, I definitely feel well cared for here. :) I began with an order of vegetable samosas both times. These come two on a plate, and they're huge. No, seriously - HUGE. These are stuffed with chickpeas, potatoes, peas and other veggies that are mushed together. The filling has a hint of spice, but nothing that would turn people off. With the samosas, Saffron presents a trio of sauces - green minty puree, a red-brown sauce and a chunky tomato/pepper/something spicy deal. I loved the both red sauces and couldn't get enough of the spicy one. I wasn't fond of the green sauce. For one of my entrees, I had the mushroom mutter, which is mushrooms and peas in sauce. This was delicious, though it was thicker and more mild than I usually order when I'm dining on Indian fare. I most recently had the kadhai paneer for an entree. The menu lists this as being cubed cheese in a "hot and tangy sauce." My server asked how spicy I'd like my dish, and I told him that I like kick, but not so much that my face burns off (I literally said that, yes.). I was bummed that my meal didn't end up being that spicy, however. I guess I had ordered medium on the American scale or whatever, because I could barely detect any spice. Don't get me wrong - the dish was still really good! I just had been hoping for a bit more punch. I ordered garlic naan with both meals, and it came out hot and fresh in a basket. Megan A. would have been quite pleased with the amount of garlic on my naan one night (The other night was just fine, but one night was exceptionally and deliciously garlicky.). The lunch buffet was about $10. Dinner entrees were about $11, samosas were $4 and garlic naan was $3. I live downtown and don't make it to Des Peres/Town and Country very often. In a nutshell, Saffron is a FABULOUS place to get terrific Indian food at an affordable price. This restaurant has become a staple for my family. If you have kids that are relatively adventuresome, Saffron can't be beat. But even the pickier child can find something here that they can enjoy. I have three boys, ages 7, 6 and almost 3. My oldest is a total foodie, and will try anything. He LOVES this place! My middle son is picky, picky, picky, and he LOVES this place. My baby won't eat anything that came out of the earth or off an animal (I'm frankly surprised he's as healthy as he is) and he LOVES this place! If you're coming here for the first time with kids, I would suggest coming on Saturday or Sunday for the lunch buffet. Most of the selections are of the milder variety, and they have some dishes that anyone can enjoy, even those who like very little spice. From the minute you walk in the door, the staff is friendly and helpful. You always have water available, your drinks are brought out immediately, they have a ton of highchairs and boosters if you need them, and more than ample seating space. They can accommodate large parties if needed, but they also have quiet, more intimate booth seating. The staff has always been very interactive with the whole family, and my kids have grown to love the people who work here. The owners have children and we often chat about schools, what our kids have been doing lately, etc.. Very down to earth people here. The buffet is large and holds a great variety of foods. We tend to frequent the buffet, especially on the weekends, because it offers a little of everything for our kids and ourselves, and it's more affordable for a family of five. But we've also been here for dinner, and I've never had any complaints about the service. We've never waited for crazy amounts of time for our order to be taken or for our food. I'm sure every restaurant has bad days, but I can honestly say, we've always received excellent service. And that's important when you've got little kids with you. Kids get bored pretty quickly. Regarding the buffet - if you're a newbie to Indian food and want to get your feet wet without going to extremes, come on a Saturday or Sunday for lunch. As I mentioned before, the food is a bit milder, and the items they put out are more family- and beginner-friendly. I've found that on the weekdays, the selections are a bit more unusual and somewhat more spicy, perhaps because of the mostly adult lunch crowd. I've had both, and I've enjoyed both. Even when their food is mild, there is no skimping on flavor. It's always delicious. I read a few reviews on here that were negative. Everyone has opinions on everything, and it's important to look at things from all angles. Like Kate I was also here with International Supper Club and like Kate I absolutely loved this place. The staff was a little overwhelmed with our large group of 10+ however I cannot fault them for that and overall they did a great job and were very nice. 4/5 All the food that was ordered was extremely good. I did try their Andheri Mirchi Bhajji and I was not a huge fan, however having never tried it before it could just be the actual food I didn't like. I got the Chef Signature Biryani with Raita for my main dish and it was fabulous! It was enough to serve at least 2 or 3 people. 4/5 for the food. The value was what I normally expect for an Indian restaurant so I will give a 4/5 for that. The interior was nothing to write home about, not bad, just nothing special. 3/5 for that as it was a-ok! Came for dinner with a group. Staff was attentive. Atmosphere was quiet. Set up was good for groups out intimate setting. Upon walking in you are put off if you're not used to being there. You aren't sure if you came in the right way because there isn't an actual hostess podium but the staff notice you upon entering. Food is delicious. I'm not an expert in Indian cuisine but I can genuinely say that I always enjoy my food at Saffron and feel the service is spectacular. While I have tried several dishes, Lamb Palak is my favorite with lots of flavor even though they adjust the spice to light for me. My husbands favorite is Shrimp Malabar and their Naan is fresh and delicious. They have on occasion surprised my daughter with a Mango Smoothie and I feel they cater to families well.
