An inviting establishment with dim lighting and dark wood furnishings. Felt like a vampire lair in the best way possible so I was excited to try the food. We got the lolly pop chicken and chilli chicken with gravy. The better part of the meal was the lolly pop chicken which is what Sagar is known for. I liked the bits of stuffing within the fried chicken. The fried part was very crispy and it was satisfying to find the bits of stuffing within the bites. However, the chilli chicken was very disappointing. My eyes always eat first, and the dish looked good because it was smothered in sauce. But sadly the sauce tasted severely watered down and not the best quality. There was no flavor besides spice. No problems with the service, the waiter was super nice. Sagar Chinese unfortunately definitely went downhill in quality for certain items and yet their attitude has stayed exactly the same. The soups and beef dishes are pretty solid as is the fried rice (albeit quite frankly it is hard to mess that up). The chicken dishes, however, I would definitely pass on. The chicken is mainly just breading covered in sauce and some of the dishes even taste spoiled. One dish tasted so spoiled that I had to call them and ask if I could get a refund. They asked if I could instead switch it with another item and I was fine with that- however the attitude that I received when bringing in the uneaten spoiled food was not warranted. If you want to refuse that the food is spoiled that's fine, but then why would I bring it in? All in all, I'm quite upset with their customer service which is in dire need of improvement. read more

Well, basically what happened was when me and my family tried to like find a table and a restaurant for Mother's Day but just like the plenty of empty spots but they just wouldn't give us a table. Not recommended; they need to learn a lesson and stop being greedy and try to make decent food for customers who pay their hard earned money. This place used to be really good and it has been on constant downhill trend. We don't live here and whenever we are in New York, we make it a point to try the food here hoping that it would not be worse than last time. However, this time they did not disappoint; they are even worse this time. We ordered Thai Soup, Chicken Fries and Wontons. The soup tastes like spicy pee with shrimp floating, chicken fries has way too much flour such that all you can taste is lumpy flour while the chicken is undercooked. This is a bit of a longer review, but it is everything you need to be convinced to NOT go here. I WILL be reporting this place to the health department. If you are the owner, you should absolutely read the whole thing. I have been going to this place for the last 19 years. It used to be phenomenal. You can go back in the reviews and see the change from great to disgusting in real time if you wish. The night started with an attempt to wash my hands in the bathroom when I see roaches near the toilet heading in the direction of the kitchen. Its NYC so I gave it some benefit of the doubt and moved on. I added photo proof. The plates came cold, not the usual warm. After inspection, I find chewing GUM stuck on my plate. Same consistency and stretchiness as gum that was in someone's mouth. Did the server apologize? No. She denied that was gum even though I confirmed it and took the plate away. I added photo proof. The food was as disappointing as I remembered it in recent memory. The chicken is mostly breading and clearly refried to serve customers. The fried rice was still white because I guess who has the time and money fry it properly. They had one good stalwart in that special sauce and they decided to mess with it and give less of it. Lastly, technically yes they are allowed to charge you for water, but you're a sit down establishment. You can afford to be classier than that. I checked the health inspection record on the front door and its understandably a "Grade Pending", but it is dated for March 31st, 2023. This review is being written on September 23rd, 2024. You can check the health records on yelp, the last one reported was actually around that first date, and they received a score of 27. That is worst you can get before getting a C rating. Even so, they should have gotten a re-inspection within 5-7 months, and then again 5-7 months after that. Given how I casually found health violations, I'm sure they didn't score all that much higher so there probably should have been ONE more inspection between the mentioned time frames. That is up to THREE instances they failed to accurately post the correct card. Keep in mind it is posted on the guidelines to destroy the old card on FIVE separate locations. Each offense is a fine up to them losing their permit so good luck with that. I added photo proof. Mr. Shamiur, I hear you boasting to your employees about how great a manager you are and what a success you are. So why do your employees look so miserable? Why are ALL of your branches doing so poorly with the health department? Your Jackson Heights branch got a 38 which is 10 points higher than the minimum score needed for a C. Sagar was okay at best. Nowadays, there are much better indo-chinese food locations in Queens. I guess one could go to Sagar for its fame, name, and nostalgia. To me, I think the quality is not the best. As you can see from the pictures, the sizzling beef did not look very appetizing, though it was their signature item. It was in fact not very sizzling, nor tasty. The noodles were great but too oily. The fried rice was also okay. Nothing stood out to me from this restaurant. What was the most wild part to me was they did not serve something so simple as water without charging for it. According to them they didn't service water, and we had to buy each in bottled forms. I think the food here is delicious! It's halal and Asian fusion, the service is fast in the store and I have been doing pick up since covid and the food such as the lollipop chicken is as tasty as if I was seated. The chili chicken or beef is great, the beef and broccoli isn't as saucy as regular Chinese take out and it's jasmine or basmati rice so don't expect the same. I LOVE the soups because I can rarely enjoy Chinese style chicken corn soup, if Tom Yum with chicken! I love the sagar mixed rice the shrimp chicken and beef all taste great together. The chow mein tastes like lo mein takeout but still good. I always feel like I am getting alot of food and the prices are justified. I've dined loyally here for over 10 years and have always highly recommended it to others as my favorite place in New York. That changes today. I had one of my worst restaurant experiences ever, while not receiving the minimum expected level of service. I'm not sure what happened during the pandemic, but it cannot excuse the abysmal service. We arrived as a party of 8 (7 adults, 1 toddler) and were seated relatively quickly. At the table there were three menus, but no utensils or napkins. Our server came by and took our appetizer order, and everything seemed fine so far. We ordered two orders of Thai soup and a few orders of lollipop chicken and dumplings. As the soup came out, we were given small saucers and soup bowls and some napkins, but no other utensils. We proceeded to ask for utensils for the table. The lady (different than the person who took our order) returned with one set, and when my sister in law requested more, the lady rolled her eyes at her and walked away. She never returned with more utensils. Later, our original server came by and we recounted this story to him and requested utensils again. This time he returned, but with paper plates and plastic utensils. I'm not sure if this was a language barrier thing. The original single set of utensils we were given was a metal set of fork, knife, spoon, the general expectation. We repeated that expectation and much later the utensils finally came out. While it would have been nice for the utensils to be preset at the table or given shortly after our arrival, the manner in which we were treated when we asked politely for utensils is far below the minimum expectation. To our surprise, there was no tap water available. While that is not a problem, I was surprised to have to ask for water rather than being asked. Are we expected to eat food without water? When we asked for water, the lady asked how many. I thought she was referring to glasses. Before she left I confirmed if we had to pay for water or not. She said we were ordering water bottles, which I don't mind, but I think it is rude to not make it clear that we were not being given tap water, but instead we were paying for bottled water. We later asked for a glass to split the water amongst ourselves, but no one ever returned with one. After ordering and receiving our appetizers, our server did not return for over twenty minutes. No one checked in to see if we wanted to order any more appetizers. No one came by to periodically take dirty or finished plates. Most importantly, no one came by to take our main course order. Growing frustrated, I eventually waved down the lady from earlier. She made eye contact with me and proceeded to walk into the kitchen and did not exit for a few minutes. During those few minutes I walked up to the front desk and mentioned that we had been waiting 20-30 minutes to order the main course and that I had gotten the lady's attention but was ignored. Shortly afterwards the first server returned to take our main course orders. The food was overall still good. The lollipop chicken from the appetizer was definitely overcooked. The fried rice we ordered was slightly bland and lukewarm. The sizzling chicken was slightly over cooked, but still quite good. The service was what ruined the experience. There is a 15% gratuity for parties of 4 or more. This system seems to lower the effort of service, but I understand it probably protects against the fact that immigrant patrons may not understand that they should tip. The one breath of fresh air was when an East Asian lady came by to take our dessert order. I was pleasantly surprised when we were ordering some gulab jamun and she asked if we wanted it to be warmed up or not. As for the South Asian servers, it sounded like some of them spoke Bengali. We do too, and if the language barrier using English caused any of these problems, then we wish we were informed that Bengali would also be an option. I used to love this place, but this experience has ruined that. In the future I will commute farther to Manhattan to get a quality Indo-Chinese meal and restaurant experience. Spice Symphony on East 50th Street will be my new go-to destination despite my loyalty to Sagar. I urge others to dine here cautiously. Do not have any expectations whatsoever. It seems that the service will only change if they realize they are losing loyal customers. I will not be back to see if any changes happen, but I hope they are made. read more

Been going to sagar for the past 10 years either by myself or with friends and family. Some advice if you're ordering from here. Don't do it on a weekday afternoon when the kitchen is slow, they pre make the chicken and toss it up in the sauce of choice- so if the kitchen is slow the chicken will be sitting around for some time and ruin it. Same goes with the fried rice. Try to order on a Friday evening, or Saturday as that's when most of the customer's come. Good food but overpriced as of now.
