This was my first time at Jackie Hair Salon and I love the way my hair turned out…read more I had bleached and dyed my hair in Korea about 4 months ago so my hair was heavily damaged making it look a bit messy. So I decided I wanted to switch it up by getting it straightened and cut (about 5 inches). Honestly, I took a leap of faith by trying someplace new because yelp reviewers rated this place high and because of their $150 straighten/treatment/haircut price. I'm glad I did. :) I called the day of to make an appointment for that same evening and was able to book an appointment for 4pm. They said it would take about 4 hours. I finished at 7:10pm (3 hrs 10mins). The girl who did my hair took the time to explain to me the process and why she was doing what she was...making me feel more at ease (This is my first time getting magic straight). Since my hair was long I was a bit nervous chopping off so much because I tend to feel that my face width looks a bit boxier. I asked for her to cut up to my collar bone with a very very slight bob angle from the back to the front so from the side view it doesn't look like one straight horizontal line. She could tell I was unsure so she cut a little longer than my collarbone and we worked out way up from there. I was so happy she did this because I always regret it when they chop so much all at once. The entire process was wash, cut, straighten chemical in hair, wash, dry, straighten out with iron, cut, put another chemical in hair, wash, put in treatment, treatment drying, straighten iron, and final cut. Only thing I'd improve about this place is maybe their music. (Only cuz music is so important to me.) Otherwise, the place is clean, there's parking in the back, friendly stylist, and a good price! I'll see how it looks in a week and update my post. As of now I'll definitely be coming back! :D

The front concierge left as well, and now there are new staff members. For one, the main person that is and should be the first impression to the salon - the front concierge manager, Dawn - is completely imposing, rude and unprofessional. Then the rest of the staff seems pleasant, but definetly made to feel rushed and non cared for. Here are a few reasons to back of my statement: To put things under perspective, for this visit I had just requested a simple haircut & blowdry. Nothing else. 1. To start, I had multiple text notifications from the salon sending me reminders that I had an appointment. I showed up on time, and I was told otherwise - that I was not showing up on the system nor did I have an appointment. I was ready to leave since Dawn did not provide a resolution or an apology for the salon's confusion until a stylist passed by and took me in. 2. When I was brought in, I was just asked "what do you want?", no proper consultation and all was completely rushed. Then, I was told my hair was clean so I didnt "need" a proper wash (per the package description). So no wash, cut dry and then blow dry quickly without any product to protect my hair from heat damage nor was given the option to request this is usually my preference. 3. At the end, I was told the total for this 15-20 minute service was $80+, I had stated my experience and there was not a care in the world from Dawn, her response was " the standard fee for blowout and haircut is $80". I felt this was pretty high and not appropriate for the bad customer experience I had, but I still paid and left the salon. I went back and looked at the list prices displayed on Substance's salon's website. Here's what it states: - Under Women's Menu: "Classic Cut + Blowdry - Shampoo & conditioner, Haircut & Blowdry : $55-65" - Under "Salon Menu" ' "women's haircuts Level 1 = $69, Level 2 = $74, Level 3= $80, Level 4=$84. I was NOT provided a reason to the fact I was being charge for level 3, the answer provided was "this is a standard fee". Which clearly, what is written on the website does NOT support this statement. 4. Oh! To top it off, as I was paying without asking for what had happened - Dawn (instead of apologizing for the confusion and the MESS of a customer service experience) began speaking and said she didn't know what had happened and imposed that maybe I had done something wrong! IT'S ALL IN WRITING AND THE APPOINMENT WAS SET THROUGH THE TEXT REMINDERS THAT THE SALON PROVIDES. The whole experience was COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE AND I WILL NOT BE RETURNING nor recommending this place to anyone in the Rutherford area!! It's quite sad, because this used to be my home salon and I loved all the staff and how cared for I felt everytime. I would always be listened to completely, cared for and consulted, never rushed and kicked out the door like today! Now I have no choice but to find another salon that cares for their clientelle, respects, consults and treats each individual as top priority.

I'd personally rather not do something at all than to do it poorly; especially if I'm charging for it. I'm new to New Jersey and typically get silk presses in Connecticut. I had an unexpected invite to a work event, and was unable to get an appointment with my regular stylist. I have a traditional sew-in with minimal leave out with yaki, so I figured I could have my hair curled at a local salon. To be safe, I called to make an appointment and explained my situation to the receptionist. She politely told me that the stylist was comfortable with my texture and to come in. I asked for big, voluminous, looser curls when I got in the stylist's chair; and she said that it was something she could accomplish. If you are familiar with my install on type-4 hair, you'll know that most people wrap their hair at night. My normal stylist curls my hair and it lasts for 3+ weeks with wraps until I wash it out. The stylist turned my face away from the mirror and slightly BEACH WAVED my hair! I communicated that I needed "CURLS" that would last overnight as I had an event to attend in the morning. When I asked her why she didn't curl my hair she responded, "This is what people usually mean when they say curls". I know the stylist made a genuine effort and did what she thought was right, but she failed to use discernment considering I am clearly not her typical client. She proceeded to load my hair with hairspray claiming it would make the waves last. Again, if you can relate to my hair type and style, you know hairspray won't do it. The next morning my hair was a nightmare, the ends were unruly and unstyled. Since the hours of operation for this salon are listed as 8am to 8pm on Google and their website, I tried to call for a fix before my event. Nobody answered my calls until 10am when I was already in Manhattan. I requested a refund as this was a major embarrassment, waste of my time and money. The staff told me they don't provide refunds and offered to fix the style or to give me a coupon for a free blowout. By this time, it was too late to fix the style, and it was clear their blowouts are not for me. I wish there had been a review like this one when I researched this salon, because I certainly would not have wasted my time. So kinky girls beware-- this is not the place for you.
