We came here on a Thursday night for dinner. Our waiter was great and helpful when I had questions about menu items and how to pronounce some menu items. We started with the beet salad and calamari. The beet salad was nice. It was tossed in the vinaigrette and had two different types of beets. The calamari was fried well and was a good portion. The filet was cooked medium and sitting in Brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes. The Brussel sprouts were expertly prepared and tasted amazing with the bite of filet and mashed potatoes. The Grilled Chicken Orecchiette was flavorful and tasty. I think the noddles were a bit strange for this dish. The meal tasted great and the noodles were cooked well but I just wasn't sure if I would have chose these noodles to go with this dish. Drink menu is fun and innovative. All 3 drinks we tried were perfectly balanced! Food wise the star of the show was the grilled chicken breast on top of the pasta (and I usually find chicken breast boring!). Juicy and flavorful. Lasagna had a bit too much lemon in the ricotta for me, and not enough bechamel. Overall a really nice experience. I would return. read more

Second time here, after awhile and let me say Thursday night is $1 oyster night ! So go! I can't remember what type maybe James river ? And free refills on a bread service which I couldn't understand at first but I was on board ! Elena our server was awesome and super sweet and accommodating. Loved her ! Let me say from my last review everything else at this place is still on the pricier side especially the drinks. We started with a lemon drop martini for my friend and I tried the sage and salt spritz. Both excellent. Loved the light refreshing spritz. Then on Elena's recommendation we tried the Bloody Mary gazpacho which was soup of the day. Wow. I could have eaten this bowl and maybe another. Chunky veggies, celery, cucumber, onions and tomatoes and in a tomato base with that hint of Bloody Mary spice. Delicious. The bread service was also great loved the whole grain. Then the oysters. We had a dozen and they went down well. Love how they present these. All the trimmings. Perfect warm evening dinner outside. The patio here is the best. Not sure why so many people were sitting inside on a perfectly sunny warm evening and hardly anyone sat outside. Beats me. Elena then told us about the free bread service refill so yes we jumped on that and a order of their double battered fries which are super crunchy and hit the spot. My friend also tried the spritz as she liked mine. Ended with an espresso martini and I have to say it was ok . For $21 and hardly any foam I've had better in town. We also tried the in house made raspberry Bundt cake with vanilla cream and this also was just ok. Little dry and hard to cut into. Was expecting softer cake. Not what I was hoping it to be. The raspberry sauce was good though. I would maybe try something else. They have some other nice choices for desserts. Had a great night here otherwise. I was excited to try Sage & Salt; I'd heard good things and loved Willow when it was in the space. The internal updates are cool, with neat booths and a huge wine collection. The menu is well composed with a lot of variety to please just about anyone. The service was prompt, courteous, and responsive. Where Sage & Salt fell short in my visit was in the quality of the food, which did not live up to the prices. We had steak frites (described as "ok" by my dining partner), leek soup (which he called exceptional), a half Caesar Salad ( adequate, but the dressing was almost the consistency of butter) and chicken parm (exceptional pasta sauce, but the chicken was hard and dry). The wine list is really inflated, with a couple bottles under $100, but more that were several hundred or even in the thousands. read more

This place has great quality food and a lot of care and thought is put into the dishes. I've generally been happy with everything I've ordered here with minor exceptions from my last visit. I've been here about three times, the most recent at "The Station" which is a small expansion that opened about a year ago. My most recent visit was ok. The restaurant has been running a $1 Oysters special on Wednesdays and Thursdays which is a pretty awesome deal, so we went to take advantage of that. The restaurant was pretty packed when we came in, there were a couple large groups of what looked like work parties and either bridal showers or birthdays. I ended up being seated at a far end right by the kitchen where staff are constantly walking in and out behind you, which is not the most comfortable spot. I'd recommend avoiding being seated back there if you are able to. The restaurant itself is intended as somewhat higher end and the prices and dish quality generally reflect that. Many cocktails hover around $20 and most full entrees are going to be $50 or more. There are some lower priced entrees like their rotini and roasted chicken which are both very good, well worth the price and full of flavor. Single glass pours of wine will be typically between $13-$18 and there is a wine list for full bottles. Bottles of wine start around $60 and the majority of the bottles are $100 or higher. There were two of us seated at the table, I ordered a ginger salad and 12 oysters for myself along with a Sierra Nevada Pilsner, which is served in a very cold frosted glass and absolutely hit the spot. They ordered 12 oysters for themselves and the Burrata Cheese which was very good and flavorful, I would highly recommend both that and the ginger salad. The oysters unfortunately took a little longer to come out, which the server apologized for. Apparently another table of around 15 people in the other side of the restaurant ordered 100 oysters at once. Eventually we got the oysters and shortly after one of the managers came over and said they heard we didn't like the oysters, which wasn't quite accurate as we hadn't even tried them yet and hadn't complained about the delay. I think the server was just trying to look out for us, which was good of him to do. The manager was nice enough to offer to comp dessert, but didn't specify if it was for both of us or one person. The oysters themselves were good and the price was certainly right. They were served on ice with lemons, cocktail sauce, vinegar and what seemed to strangely enough to be either....mayo or a very very heavy mayo-leaning tartar sauce. I had assumed it was horseradish at first but was kind of surprised to find it wasn't. I'm not sure I understand the decision behind that selection, but luckily they did have horseradish available on request. The cocktail sauce was somewhat cold and clumpy too, but I generally don't use cocktail sauce with oysters. We were thinking to order another 6 each but were told they had run out. This was around 8 pm I believe. After the food we decided to wind down with wine and the previously offered dessert. We both ordered a slice of New York Cheesecake for each of us, and a Malbec - El Enemigo for me and Bordeaux - CH Confidences de Prieure- Lichine for her respectively. I'm not a huge wine expert but the Malbec tasted kind of earthy. Once I finished my glass I found a huge amount of sediment left in it, which I assume was because it was the end of the bottle and the pour was just sort of dumped in the glass. During this time our plates from the earlier food and drinks were left on the table and never bussed. At one point I moved them to the edge of the table because I thought maybe nobody had noticed. The server to their credit was very busy trying to run 3 other tables, one of which was a work party of 15+ people, which seemed to get plenty of very prompt and attentive service. There were also numerous bussers and other service staff constantly walking back and forth by the table. To cap it all off once we got our bill we found that the dessert comp offered was only for one dessert and we were charged for the other. Overall between the delay on the oysters, running out of them, the failure to bus anything until the very end of the dinner, the sediment in the wine and being charged for the dessert after being offered a comp I was not very satisfied with the service. Based on my personal experience while the quality and craftsmanship of the food is very good, I would probably try some of the other higher-end dining options in Winston first. read more

Tonight we did my birthday dinner at salt and sage. We chose the bar top seating option to have a view of kitchen and cooks. Douglas was an amazing server ( on top of water refills and food suggestions) We started out with oysters Rockefeller and then the Pan Seared Scottish Salmon entrée followed by the rice pudding brûlée. Everything was cooked to perfection. Then we received a tasting of scallop and risotto which was an amazing treat! Highly recommend for a nice dinner out! read more

My husband and I went there for a special date night last night. We had not been there since they expanded. The restaurant was very nice inside. You could dress just about however you wanted. We sat at the bar and had a nice conversation with the bartender about wines. He seemed really knowledgeable. However, I was disappointed that they did not have any Moscato on hand . We placed our order. My husband had the special of the day which was a grouper and I had the fillet. We were very hungry and were somewhat disappointed by the size of his grouper considering it was almost $60. Our plan was to split our meals so we both had surf and turf. It looks more like an appetizer than it was a full meal. My fillet was roughly the same price. I'm glad I got it since my husband ended up eating half of it. It was very flavorful. My husband ordered one glass of wine and we had both entrées. I only had water to drink for dinner. Our bill came to be $140 before tip. There was also a service charge to use the credit card. I was disappointed to say that too since some restaurants have decided to stop doing that. My husband went to the bathroom and noticed that there was a very thin trickle of water coming out of the faucet and then he had to wait a few seconds before it would resume again. All in all, the ambience was nice and the servers were friendly but honestly for $140 we expected at least double the size of the fish that we got. We've been to other upscale restaurants and have paid the same or maybe a little bit less for more food. read more

Overall, this was a pretty "meh" experience. The waitstaff seemed very new and not what you'd expect from a more expensive restaurant. Our first round of drinks took over 20 minutes to arrive, which set the tone. On the upside, the oysters were excellent--but everything else was average at best. The chicken was dry, and the tartare was overwhelmingly salty. For a $200+ dinner, I'd expect much better. Honestly, I'd rather go to Six Hundred, Downtown Grill, or even Roosters. What concerns me most is hearing that the new owners of Six Hundred are the same people behind this place--I really hope they don't bring the same issues over there. read more

We used to really love eating here but recently they took the skewers off their menu bc they said it was too labor intensive. These were truly the most flavorful things on the menu and they set this restaurant apart from all others so it's extremely disappointing. The new chef from French Laundry (or so I was told) changed their bruschetta and bruschetta and now it's mostly greasy and has very little balsamic. Their French Onion soup is still delicious with a flavorful broth and nicely melted cheese. It's a very narrow old building so seating on either side is not very comfortable, but we have stayed to hear a set from a jazz band that was enjoyable. read more

This place always gets a ton of recommendations but I don't get the appeal. We tried a variety of dishes from the pork belly skewer, chicken parm, and steak. The pork belly skewer was ok but the skin needs to be crispier. Mac n cheese side was delicious. Sauce on the chicken parm was delicious and the best dish of the night. Steak was poorly cooked. Ordered medium rare but was unevenly cooked with parts super well done and chewy. Some of it was closer to medium rare but overall a dry, underwhelming steak. Vegetable side was nice and a change of pace from the normal veggie sides with golden beets and onions. We came to the Sage and Salt for Mother's Day dinner. Obviously, reservations were needed to be seated timely. We got the mussels appetizer and it was fantastic. The sauce was amazing. I got the Yellow Fin Tuna entree, and it was cooked very nicely. We ordered wine to go with our entrees. My son and I were in town from Portland Maine for a tour at UNCSA, and ate at Salt and Sage Bistro. It was the last day of February but it was pretty warm. We sat outside for dinner and had an amazing culinary experience. The heater was on just right, the food was amazing, and the service was great. Responsive but not too pushy. We started with the bread service and it blew us both away. The breads were all so flavorful (and we're a sourdough family). It was on another level. The spreads were fantastic and he even enjoyed an olive tapenade even though he's not an olive guy. For dinner we got steak frites and a fish special that had a crab beurre blanc sauce. Both were fantastic, and we'd order them again in a heartbeat. The price for a great experience like that was totally affordable. We've paid more and received less. So get here and enjoy yourself! We started with cocktails and the mushroom skewer which was DELICIOUS. I ordered a steak with Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese was charred more than I like on the top, but had a great flavor underneath the char. The steak...was beautifully presented. We dined out with friends at Sage & Salt bistro and really enjoyed our dinner! Because we had a larger party we got to sit on the station side and enjoy both menus from the station and Sage & salt. We ordered an array of skewers, bread service, appetizers, and entrees. The bread service was some of the best I've ever had and the skewers were to die for. While pricey, the burger was phenom! My only qualm is that I ordered my ribeye medium and it came out well done, sent it back and it came out well done again. The flavor was wonderful but for the price I want to make sure my steak is cooked to the temp I prefer. So I'd probably stick with the skewers and another entree next time. I brought my mom here on New Year's Eve and we were both in awe! Everything from the service to the food to the ambiance was a 12/10. There are many seating options like the dining room, the bar, and the outdoor heated option. I really enjoyed watching the chefs from the bar. We ordered so many food items and everything was seasoned to perfection. I don't believe you can go wrong here. So together we tried the rack of lamb, mac and cheese, twice baked potato, Brussel sprouts, crab and artichoke dip and the salmon. There was unfortunately no room for dessert lol They have a very extensive wine list where they have a sommelier help you order what you like. We've dined here before but the wait service and food we under par. As we approached the checkin, 3 people were there and no one greeted us, rather they all just looked at us- we had to speak first. Then we wait 30 minutes for server to come take our drink order. We were served cold lobster linguini which resulted in food poisoning. We told the waiter when he stopped by about 20 minutes until the meal. He never checked on quality once food arrived. We mentioned the dish was room temperature to cold and that the chicken pasta dish was also the same. By that point, we were done eating as in we didn't want anymore. He offered to go see what he could do. No one from upper management came to talk to us. No one offered to comp our meal. The waiter only came back over and said I can pretend it's your birthday and bring you a dessert what would you like? Not the way to handle a situation like this. read more

I've been here twice. I do think it's a good restaurant, but to me it's overpriced. It is a charming place in what appears to be a former rail station, and there are two sides-the main restaurant and the Station, which gives speakeasy vibes and has live music on certain nights. We do appreciate the atmosphere at the Station. The menu is eclectic with oysters/seafood, steaks, pastas, and Japanese Robata skewers. The portions are mid though. And although the flavor is good, I just feel like they don't always add the special touches needed to justify the price. The flatiron steak robata skewer was very flavorful, but it was small for the price. This time hubby opted for a Sage & Salt burger and substituted the fries with brussels. The burger itself was okay, but just not $28 good. It was also slightly overcooked. But he didn't want to complain. The brussels were a bit too salty for his/my taste. They aren't the crispy kind, which is okay, but they should lighten up on the sodium. I understand Salt is in the name of the place, but there are a few items that could use a lighter hand with the shaker. Most of their entrees are much more expensive and still the portions are smaller. The bar is very nice and extensive. And our server was great. I will try again, but I am on the hunt for a comparable option that's a bit more of a value. read more

I had a delicious meal here last week! I came for a solo birthday dinner on Friday around 630pm and was able to sit at the bar immediately. The bar looks into the kitchen so you can see all of the activity going on. I took a look at their menu and opted for their smoked old fashioned, bacon wrapped scallops, and the grilled shrimp pasta primavera. Everything was scrumptious. I don't even like old-fashioned, but I can't turn down a drink when there's the option to have it smoked! And the drink itself was so smooth, had just a touch of sweetness that let me enjoy and sip on it slowly throughout my meal. The bacon scallops were out of this world- so tender and juicy and full of flavor, and the same goes for my pasta. It had such a savory but also light cream sauce that just satisfied my palate perfectly. I should have tried a dessert but I was too full for any more food. This is definitely some place to treat yourself! It is pricier, no doubt, but worth every cent and I would recommend it for any special occasion. Service was friendly, attentive, all around just a really great dining experience here. One very small note- the bar seats are an awkward 2-3 inches too short, in my opinion! I felt like the counter was just too high- but that doesn't detract from the quality of the food or service at all! Highly recommend adding this spot on WS bucket list. read more

Tonight we dined at Sage and Salt in downtown Winston (where Mozelles used to be), and it was an impressive experience. I ordered the roasted chicken and scallops, which were both perfectly cooked. The fried artichokes added a great crispy texture, and the pea risotto was creamy and flavorful, rounding out the dish beautifully. The drink menu was creative--I had a THC-infused mocktail that was refreshing and unique, as well as a beer that paired well with the meal. To finish, we indulged in their homemade strawberry cake, which was moist and bursting with fresh flavor. Overall, a fantastic dining experience with great attention to detail in both food and drinks. Service and ambiance was also top notch! An excellent dining spot in downtown Winston Salem. We stopped in for a weekday lunch and had no problem parking in the lot out front. Seated at a table near the magnificent bar, we could see both lovely drinks being poured, in addition to the connected open kitchen in the back. Really a pleasant experience through and through. The lunch menu did not list the very popular Yellowfin Tuna Tower, but I decided to inquire nonetheless. Surprisingly, our friendly server stated that she could have it made up regardless. It did not disappoint. The perfectly seared tuna melts in your mouth. Accompanied by avocado, compressed cucumber and an exquisite dipping sauce, this dish is something everyone should experience at least once when coming here. The fried chicken sandwich and French dip both had perfectly cooked meat that was juicy and tasty. The shaved prime cut ribeye is delicious! Can't wait to try the large and comfortable patio on a warm day. Many items on the lunch and dinner menus will bring us back for sure. read more

I had eaten at the old Willows Bistro many times so was excited to give the new Sage & Salt Bistro a try for my son's birthday. The experience did not disappoint. I deducted one star because the quality-to-price ratio was a bit off. Most notable on the positive side of the ledger was our server, Christopher (if the receipt is correct), who was very attentive and also patient with my sons who kept him on his toes with their particularities. Cocktails (Legal Drinking Sage and Big Smoke) were on point. My boys had the prime rib. One was closer to rare than medium rare in temperature. Still delicious but for $42/10 ounces, I want exact temperature. I had the monkfish special, which was as advertised by Christopher, but for $55 I expect to be blown away not merely satisfied. I'm looking forward to going back and ordering some entrees off the regular menu to find that value missing in this visit. read more

Very disappointed. They were busy so my husband and I checked the bar and there were only a couple people there but the rest of the bar was filled with dirty dishes. We went ahead and sat thinking it would get cleaned. Took the bar tender at least 15 minutes to take our drink order at which time she took the couple dishes in front of us. Did not wipe the bar off (which was dirty and sticky) and handed us dirty menus with some sort of sticky liquid on them. Should have known at the time and left, but tried to tough it out. Ordered an appetizer. It arrived but our plates, silverware and napkins still hadn't at this point. I went to the hostess to get them, at which time, the bartender reached around me to grab them and said "she had it" (little late). Our drinks were actually good (Mule and a Hibiscus Sour) and so was the appetizer (hot crab dip). Went to the restroom and gross is an understatement. Standing water around the toilet, toilet didn't flush (seemed like a weak flush-not plugged), door lock was missing and the sink leaking (so much so, the floor was wet and slick). Food came-blackened catfish (not very good), lobster ravioli (that was pretty good) and would have been even better with a spoon (that never arrived) to enjoy the sauce. I would have asked for one, but looking at our track record, I was pretty sure she wouldn't be back to check on us (and she didn't until we were over halfway done). Had I waited, it would have been cold. On another note, about halfway through our dinner a manager finally came and cleaned off the bar. I really appreciated the crumbs flung at us as he wiped the bar off. Overall a terrible experience and not a clean environment. Would not recommend unless taking out as the food wasn't terrible. read more

The waffle on the chicken and waffle was small and burned. The Benedict was not bad but a little cool and nothing special. The Caesar salad was very basic but adding shrimp was a good choice. Wow! My wife has been seeing a lot of information online about Sage & Salt Bistro and noted this weekend was their first lunch service so we decided to make a reservation. Reservations can easily be made on Opentable. We also peaked at their lunch menu and were excited to try it. We didn't realize how close the restaurant is to Old Salem and the charming older neighborhood full of brick buildings and mature trees. We quickly realized the building is an old railroad depot building in which Sage & Salt occupies a portion of. They also have a large outdoor space which is nicely equipped with amenities such as flowers, candles and heaters. We stepped inside and were immediately impressed. We were greeted by a young man who took us to a small table. We learned that on this particular afternoon reservations weren't required, it was quiet at 3:30pm with just one other table seated. We anticipate as the word spreads they will quickly get busy and reservations would be a great idea, if not necessary. Jessica stopped by our table and introduced herself. She also took our drink orders, which for us this particular day only involved water. They do offer an extensive list of wine, beer and a full bar. My wife had seen others comment on the bread service as an appetizer, therefore, we ordered that as we looked over the menu. Jessica brought the bread by and we enjoyed the fresh sourdough and "good butter" the most, we didn't necessarily expect to love the Olive Tapenade and Chili Crisp, so next time we will just ask for bread and butter. My wife ordered the house salad with grilled chicken (no cheese) and I ordered the Sage & Salt burger and added cheddar cheese. I also requested the lettuce, tomato and pickle on the side with no mayo. I chose the "frites" as my side. Jessica was very helpful as we asked questions about the menu and she took very good care of us. The restaurant itself is tastefully decorated and very clean. The kitchen area is visible from the dining room and looks to be very nicely equipped and organized. While we waited for our food, the dinner staff began to arrive and prepare. They were busy putting the candles out and double checking the tables. Our food arrived and looked delicious. I consider myself an expert when it comes to burgers and fries and let me tell you, both were really, really good. So much so that my wife said I moaned a bit as I began eating. It was obvious my burger was hand formed and thick. I encouraged my wife to try the fries and she agreed they were delicious. Maybe it is a better quality of oil but let me tell you my entire plate of food was delicious. My wife also commented on how fabulous her salad was. Everything was plated beautifully and was crisp and refreshing. The red wine vinagrette was impressive as well. We had a young woman stop by our table and she introduced herself as one of the managers. She commented that she felt our order took too long to arrive and apologized. She offered us a complimentary dessert for our time. We thought it was a very nice touch. Not necessary, but appreciated. Jessica stopped in a bit later and brought the dessert menu to us. We decided on the apple tart. Wow...when Jessica brought it to us a few minutes later it was beautiful. The apples were arranged perfectly on the crust and there was a small scoop of ice cream. To say we enjoyed it is an understatement. Absolutely delicious. The prices are reasonable based on the quality and care that goes into the food. We would absolutely recommend to anyone who is looking for an exceptional experience. Wishing them all the very best! read more
