Overpriced and Disappointing Quality Care Quality: The care was just okay. I'm experiencing tooth pain again only 2 months after receiving treatment from them, which raises concerns about the quality. I brush twice a day and floss daily, so it's not a hygiene issue on my end. Cost: I had three composite fillings and ended up paying $253 out of pocket, while my insurance covered $701. That's a steep total, especially considering the results. Now I want to go in for a cleaning and check-up, but they told me I'd have to pay entirely out of pocket because my insurance benefits are maxed out. I've never had this issue with my previous dentist, even with similar treatments. I only chose this office because I recently moved, but I'll probably go back to my old dentist--even if it's a long drive. It's just not worth the cost and uncertainty here. read more

My friend recommended this place and the TL;DR moral of the story is ANDREW wins as the most efficient and effective hygienist that I've ever had. Due to my pain wussity threshold, I've always opted for gum desensitization paste but he was able to talk me out of using it. When he doesn't cleans my teeth, you better believe I ask for this stuff! It's a bit like certified massage therapy here -- if you want to get extra pressure, they'll pour it on but if you want less pressure (pardon the pun), they can somewhat do that and still be effective, but especially Andrew. (I have seen it and felt it!!!) Unfortunately, Andrew is a rotating visiting hygienist and therefore is a more scarce commodity. For more involved procedures, yes, they do have that magical portable $50-$70 sedation pill of unreimbursable goodness that will knock you the h*ck out but if you don't bring a friend, it's too bad so sad for you... Since I didn't want to drive 100+ miles round-trip anymore, uphill, both ways, in the cold, to/from San Francisco, I was open to the idea of a more local dentist. YMMV of course but the friend of mine that recommended me to this place, shall we say, "does not play well with others." Also, she's a stickler for competence so if she recommends a place, I tend to pay closer attention. Alasably, she no longer goes there due to "irreconcilable 'philosophical' differences" but cleaning-wise, it passed muster for even her... D`: If you're a perennial or a cereal :) flossing or brushing offender, they will try to shoehorn you into quarterly cleanings (or even more frequently), which obviously are not covered by your dental insurance. It's up to you to decide your fate so don't let that sour you on their business as a whole. We all know what disinterested "'cuz the face don't understand" staff are like but at least you won't have to worry about that here. They have an automated reminder service via email that you can use to confirm your appointment as well as a reminder for the day of the appointment. By the entrance/exit, they stock those cute little water bottles you can take with you before or after your ordeal, er, appointment. Also, should you experience urge overkill and find yourself in need of brushing your teeth whilst humming "Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon," they've incidentally and additionally stocked their restroom (singular) with disposable toothbrushes that have toothpaste on the bristles! Based on a recommendation, I decided to see Dr. Shimizu. I made a visit on Tuesday morning and I am so pleased! I loved that everyone that did work on me explained exactly what they were doing and made sure I felt comfortable and acknowledged me if I had any concerns. My past dentist did not do this when I made visits to his office, so this was a bit different for me but in a good way. Mae, the hygienist was extremely nice and it was great to joke around with her. I don't leave reviews for mediocre experiences, I leave reviews for either excellent or horrible. This dentist is by far the BEST I have encounter in the Bay Area. I have been searching for a dentist all over the Bay Area, and I am lucky to have found Dr. Shimizu on the net. Long story short, I was not treated correctly by my dentist and ended up having a painful abscess requiring a root canal. Dr. Shimizu's office was able to take me in the same day, were very accommodating, and very professional. The way that Dr. Shimizu performed dental work is definitely reflective of his personality: professional and caring. His whole office is definitely elevating the standard of care in dentistry. I came to Dr. Shimizu after a 2 year period of not seeing a dentist. (My fault entirely) The doctors and assistants were extremely friendly and helpful. Dr. Shimizu told me the truth that I would need extensive work and they got me set up right away. They did great work. They went above and beyond with my biannual cleaning and gave me useful recommendations to maintain and improve my oral health. They helped me get fitted for a new orthodontic retainer. When I felt like the 3rd party organization did not fit the retainer perfectly, they had a replacement made for free and offered to refund me the money if it did not fit perfectly. Dr. filled in several cavities my son had and took care of "high concern" areas with gentle and loving hands! He brought my son's teeth back to a "safe" place. I was referred here by a childhood friend and had such a great experience. When I walked in the receptionist Crystal knew who I was and had everything ready for me to fill out since I was a new patient. After there were plenty of magazine for me to peruse while waiting. When I was walked into the back, Crystal gave me a complete tour of the facility which was great, out of all the dentists I've been to none have taken the time to do that. Then we sat down in a room where she asked me a set of questions regarding my past dental history and my health before the doctor came in and prepped me for what was to happen next. Since it's been a year or so before since my last appointment, they did a full x-ray and check up of my jaws, gums, teeth, etc.. Seriously they were so thorough I'm used to just going to a dentist office and them just plopping me in a chair and doing their thing without asking me questions. I have been a patient of Dr Shimizu since 1995. I'm very happy with the experience. The office is modern, the staff are really friendly and I feel like I get top-notch care. I've had routine dental care, two crowns, and Invisalign performed in the office. Everything has gone very well. The only feedback I would offer is that the staff have clearly been trained to sell. I'm not sure that I am used to being "sold" healthcare yet. My friends at other dentists tell me this is pretty routine. During the holidays I wanted to use my insurance since I have double coverage and I come back home from Austin, TX. This isn't my primary dentist but I was referred to Dr. Shimizu by Lailani, the office manager who also works at my primary dentist office, Evergreen Dental Arts. Dr. Shimizu and the office staff are absolutely fabulous! Lailani has always been great so it was nothing short of amazing when it extended to Dr. Shimzu's office. I was so impressed with how friendly and professional they were. They did a great assessment and cleaning on my teeth. I can tell Dr. Shimizu stays really up to date on the equipment and tools they use. It felt like it was a lot more up to date that my other office to be honest. I really felt like I was getting a quality experience. I even told my mom how much I really liked the office. I also told my boyfriend (who will travel to Gilroy to go to his dentist when we're in town because his friend used to work there) that he should try to go there next time. I first came to Dr. Shimizu's practice about 5 years ago, after not seeing a dentist for about 15 years; long story but it had to do with a dentistry aversion I've been dealing with since childhood. A friend recommended him as a dentist specializing in people with such issues. Once the pain got to be beyond unbearable, I called and they took me on an emergency basis for a root canal. The Doctor was very calm and encouraging, yet made it clear how to get better at self-care and minimize such pain in the future. My fear of going to the dentist somehow evaporated immediately! He's since performed a few fillings, chip-repairs, etc. All the work he's done has been solid and not once required a re-do from faulty work. His ability to administer a barely perceptible shot is second to none. Over subsequent years, I've had their state-of-the-art laser deep cleaning at the hands of their hygienist, Ewa who is very thorough, steady-handed, and caring of her patients. And once you get to know her has a great sense of humor. Every cleaning she's given resulted in perfectly cleaned teeth, and reversed the path towards potential gum-disease I was dangerously careening down. Also, the most recent assistant to Dr. Shimizu (the person directly helping during surgery, I think her name is "Mary", I'm so terrible with names) is fantastic as well, experienced, no apparent, mistakes. I sent my mom here too and she has nothing but good to say of Dr. Shimizu's other hygienist Andrew. Lastly, his receptionist staff Leilani and Crystal are very diligent towards keeping the patient coming back, in setting up appointments, e-mailing, texting and calling in reminders to patients. Also, they have an uncanny ability to navigate the labyrinthine mysteries of dental insurance coverage and coming out the other end with the best possible deal for a patient. They also make an effort to work around financial limitations of working people. (offering low-interest credit card plans, etc) And, very easy to talk to. I have double coverage which gives me 4 thousand dollars a year for dental. I have been going there for a couple years. They told me I have a cavity, need some cleaning and may need a root canal but are refusing me service for a 65 dollar no show fee. Me. Shimizu and the hygienist are excellent but now I have to give my four thousand yearly to another dentist because I refuse to pay the 65 no show fee because my boss would not let me get the time off. I feel like I lost out on a good dentist and great hygienist but they will lose a lifetime client who would've paid tens of thousands of dollars over a measly 65 dollar no show fee. read more

Based on the recommendation of my colleague, I went to Dr. Shimizu to get Invisalign braces. He and his team were highly competent every step of the way. I subsequently moved out of the area and Dr. Shimizu's team did a perfect job on transferring all my records to my new dentist 450 miles south in Orange County. Dr. Shimizu has been my dentist ever since I switched over from my childhood dentist. Due to weak enamel and poor pediatric dentistry, I came to Dr. Shimizu at a young age with almost one cavity per tooth. There aren't a lot of things I haven't seen in dentistry, I've been through it all. Over the last 10 years Shimizu and his skilled team have performed multiple root canals, cavity fillings, regular cleanings, fillings on chipped and fractured teeth, and resurfacing on my two front teeth with beautiful veneers.
