This review is long overdue. I was referred to Dr. Photopoulos since I needed a root canal that was a bit difficult. I've had a couple of root canals before, but hearing that statement made me more nervous than usual, but the procedure was necessary. Dr. Photopoulos and his staff were amazing!! During the procedure, Dr. Photopoulos took his time and he explained what was happening when he got to the difficult part. It actually wasn't bad at all and the procedure went faster than I expected. My first endodontics experience ever. I've never had a root canal before, and they explained everything on a high level so that i can be familiarized on best practices. Then provided very low levels technical details and justification for extra tests. I love the doctor specifically (forget his name but it's a male), because nothing is ambiguous. So he gives you a sense of control and ownership on the treatment plan by including you and keeping you informed at every step. This was my first (and hopefully last) root canal procedure. I was extremely nervous as I am terrified of needles and dentists in general. Thankfully, Dr. Photopoulos was amazingly gentle and informative. He explained every step of the way which really helped calm my nerves. The whole procedure went smoothly and it was very evident he's quite experienced at this. I think most reassuringly, I never felt rushed as he was so patient even when he had to give extra lidocaine shots and would check in on me throughout the procedure. Stay away! Shady practice!!! Very awful front desk experience. Front desk is the very first place where customer start experiencing about that business. I called to the front desk for scheduling an appointment, and the lady put me in a very uncomfortable situation when she tried to get my social security over the phone, claiming that this is required to check the insurance and book an appointment. This is really awkward and not a welcoming situation. I am using my same insurance with different dentist and never had to share it over the phone. I understand, and would happy to share the relevant information as part of documentation on the day of appointment, when filling and signing up the forms in-person. However, I did ask her if they have any kind of online form, where I can fill up my details. She wasn't even sure if they have it online or if the online forms really work. read more

This review is for a root canal treatment. This was my first ever dental procedure and almost a last minute emergency, a very very old filling from one of the molars had come off along with chipping of the tooth. This exposed the nerves and made it super sensitive. The team - Roberta, Sandip and Kathy, are such warm, welcoming, calm and helpful ladies. Right from making an appointment over the phone to the check-in procedure, and post op, they made it so comfortable and easy. Everyone is extremely professional, ensures that your time on the phone and in office is well utilized and ensures that all the paperwork and pre-op process is very smooth, swift and not at all overwhelming. In fact they were all so concerned and accommodative that when they had a cancellation, Kathy called me and even offered me a slot prior to mine. Roberta was so kind, caring, patient and detailed with me during the pre op, especially after she learnt that it was my first ever dental procedure, she explained everything in great detail, was very gentle and caring in getting me ready for the procedure. After the procedure, she once again explained the next steps and how to care for. She has excellent bedside manners and is very supportive. Dr. Photopoulos has a very reassuring demeanor. He too was very detailed in his pre-op and post op conversations and very reassuring and caring, upon learning that its my first time he went over all my concerns very patiently. It was quite evident from very early on that he is a seasoned professional and I felt a great sense of relief and was no more anxious before the procedure began. The way he started with the numbing procedure, ensuring that I was feeling at ease and was not in pain at all was enough to put me at ease throughout the remaining time. He was so thorough and patient that no where during the process I felt as if things were rushed or he was just being mechanical about it. He has a very humane touch and cares for the patient throughout the procedure, explaining and checking-in as things progress. The procedure was virtually painless and I felt very safe throughout. One of the highlights was the great teamwork between Dr. Photopoulos and Roberta, its hard to miss that how in-sync their team works, the meticulousness, unison and rhythm is hard to miss. The procedure felt so well-orchestrated between the two. Special mention that the office space, equipments and hygiene practices and protocol is top notch. I am expected to have another root canal procedure in the future and I feel extremely relieved to know that finding a good dental office is least of my concerns. Dr. Photopoulos uses an electron microscope and was able to find very complicated nerves other surgeons couldn't have seen. He went to Harvard and is reasonably priced. He's honest and his staff work tirelessly to ensure nobody is exposed to the coronavirus. Rest assured you won't feel any pain and can relax while getting the very best work done. The advantage of Dr. Photopolous is that many procedures done by other surgeons might need to be redone many years later; because roots or nerves were missed, since they're difficult to find. You won't have that problem if Dr. Photopolous does work on you. They also take 3-d X-rays your dentist probably cannot and so it's a far more scientific approach than with other oral surgeons. Cathy, the office manager is extremely sloppy. I was referred to here by a nearby general dentist. I didn't want to repeat the imaging due to cost so before my appointment, I really made sure that my general dentist office sent the dental images to this office and they did. They even forwarded me the email to confirm. Yet when I called Cathy, she claimed she did not receive it. So I myself had to re-send her the images. She responded and said these are all bitewings and they need full-mouth x-rays. In reality, that is the 5th pictures I sent so i realized she only took a cursory glance at them. So I responded and said it's one of the picture. She didn't reply so I thought all is good. On the day of my appointment, they retook my xray again and did the cbct-scan (3d xray) as well. Later I found out that my general dentist already took cbct-scan (3d-xray) and the fifth picture that I sent is derived from it (3d renderings) so if someone had taken a look at it, they would have known. I was charged half a thousand extra by Santa Clara Endodontics for this. Had this office had some communication with the referral office at all, this wouldn't need to happen. I tried to ask for firstly a fee waiver and then a discount because I had other medical bills and every time Cathy would said she will discuss with the dentist and call me...But weeks go by and she never called. So I emailed, no response. I tried to give her time so I waited a week later to email again, but still no response and then a week later I emailed again, still no response. So I called and she said the dentist said no and she complained I've been "emailing everyday". I mean I only emailed because she didn't bother to respond and it's actually not every day. Is email not an acceptable form of communication? Is it acceptable to keep ignoring patients email when you could just reply? read more

I got recommended to see the doctor by my dentist to do the root canal treatment. The office staff is very welcoming and polite. They answered all my questions and assured that all will be well. I was very afraid of the procedure. The doctor was very relax and explained everything in very calming manner. He did 3 or 4 shots of anaesthesia and made sure that I would not feel any pain what so ever. I truly did not feel any pain during and also not after the procedure. I trust this guy. When you've got a problem and you need an expert, that expert can say almost anything and you're probably going to go along. Here's the rub. My regular endodontist said the tooth in question could not be saved by a root canal and recommended removing and replacing it with an implant. Since that would cost at least $5,000 ( it's rarely covered by insurance ) and require a few months for the entire process, I asked a good friend ( and retired dentist ) for his suggestion. He said "I'd get a 2nd opinion from Jim Jespersen. I've referred family and friends to him and they've all had good things to say". While on the phone to make an appointment with Dr. Jespersen, his office got the necessary background information for the insurance company so the amount of coverage could be determined in case a root canal was appropriate. The next day, they said insurance would pay 80% ( at least double that of my regular endodontist ). The doctor's waiting area is functional, but not what you'd call spacious. It does the job for up to 4 people. Fortunately, I was the only one at that time. The receptionist is a multi-tasking woman who seemed quite efficient with her work. It did take 45 minutes for Dr. Jespersen to see me, but the office was apparently hit by a rash of dental emergencies earlier in the day. During that wait, the staff took an x-ray of my problem tooth. Dr. Jespersen introduced himself, asked several questions and conducted a few tests to gauge the sensitivity of that area. He said "I doubt there's anything serious, but let's look at previous x-rays first". I scheduled a follow-up appointment for the next week. At that 2nd meeting, Dr Jespersen reviewed the information and concluded neither an implant not even a root canal was needed. "The shadow on the x-ray near the root of that tooth might indicate a problem in the future or just the way your root has grown, but nothing we should attack now. You don't have any of the symptoms I'd expect. If things flare up, we can always do a root canal. An implant wouldn't be appropriate". Dr. Jespersen was everything my retired dentist friend predicted. A knowledgeable, thorough, down-to-earth guy who tries to see things from the patient's perspective. He could have easily suggested a procedure designed to create more revenue because I was prepared for a root canal case, but said "if it was my tooth, I'd see how it behaves in the next 6 months". The office even reimbursed me for slightly overpaying the small charge for the initial visit. A few other quick notes. Parking is plentiful behind the building. The office itself was a bit on the drab side. It's obviously been around a while and seen better days. Functional, but frail. Like the old saying goes..."it's best not to judge a book by its cover". Pros: Trustworthy and patient endodontist. Efficient front office. Cons: If the wait is long, small reception area can seem claustrophobic. I was referred here by my general dentist. Great location, lots of street parking available, although hard to find since that area has a plethora of dentist offices. Don't stop at the dentist signs instead look for a wooden placard (by Scott Road) that has 1200 on it. (I don't know about you but I tend to go off signs like "dentistry" which didn't help here. We live and we learn.) For my consultation, paperwork was clear and relatively easy with the help of the friendly receptionist Karen. They accommodated me even though I came in 3 hours early (Yes, THREE hours. I'm that girl!) There is coffee available, tv, and a faint sound of non-intrusive, soothing music playing in the background. I didn't have to wait too long. When called, I was ushered in by a friendly and professional dental assistant. She quickly took an X-ray and had me ready to see Dr. Jespersen. During this time my eyes wandered to Dr. Jespersen's degree and what stood out for me was the year. This man's been in dentistry for a long time. I immediately felt at ease with the knowledge that I was in good hands and whatever was causing my toothache would be discovered and resolved. Dr. Jespersen did not disappoint. He is professional and courteous as he articulated what was causing the pain in my tooth. He did some tests and informed me what was wrong- a dang root canal. As disappointed as I was to hear this I was more relieved that at least now I know what's causing my toothache and in a few days it will be 'fixed'. Unfortunately, I've gone to Dr. Jespersen twice to retreat a root canal, however, fortunately, he and his staff are absolutely amazing. He talks through each step he is about to take, and is very thorough. He is also the only dentist to give me a shot of anesthetic and I don't even feel the needle going through. I went to Dr. Photopoulos after seeing my general dentist for a toothache. I've had a history of root canals and not looking forward to seeing an Endodontist. After a few X-rays and consult with Dr. Photopoulos, I had a tooth infection and a missed canal in two previous root canals. Who knew some people have four canals in a tooth rather than three. I had one tooth treated (the one that was bothering me) the same day and I'm happy to say I have recovered well. He was very thorough during the treatment and informed me every step of the way. Dr. Photopoulos called to check up on me post treatment and asked if I was feeling well. I will be definitely be going back to treat the second tooth soon. ok, so I will add on to this man's legendary status. I've had two root canals done on my two upper molars. BEST MONEY I EVER SPENT. When I was there, Dr Jespersen mentioned some interesting stats from his career. I can't remember, but I think he told me my first root canal was his 73295th he's done? Mathematically, not sure how many years this is but it's quite a bit. He also pointed out that statistically, my root canal should not require further visits/complications. Sure enough, first one worked out fine and same with my second one. Only negative, not his fault, is the number of shots he needs to give you for a root canal. you will be injected 4 times to numb the tooth. Believe me, he is doing you a favor even though this sounds rough! read more

Dr Jespersen in a RED Aloha Shirt introduced himself as "JiM". 3. Dr Jespersen alleviates much anxiety by EXPLAiNiNG what he'll do. 4. NO PAiN. I had to REMiND my tense body to let go of the armrests, or to relax my calf muscles or to stop arching my back. NO PAiN!! NO PAiN--I can't get over it. Unbelievable. This guy was condescending and a basic all around douche to me. I told him what my problem was and he kept insisting that he knew better than I did about what hurt. He told me that the pain I was feeling "wasn't really pain" and that my tooth was perfectly fine. About 3 months later that tooth abscessed and was replaced with an implant. And to think, I was suffering all those years with that imaginary pain until Dr. Jesperson came along and helped me. His mistake cost me 6,200 dollars! The receptionist is rude, indeed, (as pointed out by Joen). She does not do anything that she promises to do - like giving your records to the doctor and conveying information correctly - and finds enjoyment from watching you sitting helplessly for hours in a small reception while she is letting all her friends and acquaintances to go ahead and be treated. Very surprising, taking into account that she charges people she treats badly much more than those she is nice to. Can't comment on the professionalism of the medical staff yet as it takes two appointments to find out you if they are going to treat you or not. read more

I was a half-dead zombie and Dr Photopoulos brought me back to life with his extremely thorough, highly professional way of working. I had two root canals that failed because the dentist who had performed them left nerve matter inside my root. The Dr did several x-rays and showed me the difference and it was very comforting. I felt next to no pain whatsoever and he used this giant microscope to make sure he got everything. I can't possibly be more grateful.
