We went to Sage, again, for my birthday celebration given our great experience last time. I have to say, this place continues to impress, and I think my entree was better than the last time! There was a slight misstep with our wine order, but that happens and certainly not a big deal. The amuse Bouche did exactly what it is designed to do -- fig based, and YUMMY. We then had a Caesar salad which, in truth, was not too exciting -- the dressing had too much garlic and we had a difference of opinion on the anchovy (I liked it, my dining companion didn't). I would say, less garlic in the dressing and more anchovies -- in the dressing and on the salad. Our dining companions both had the French onion soup and commented at how excellent it was. For the main, I had the salmon (prepared differently this time) and my partner had the lamb. One word: Outstanding -- in presentation, preparation, and execution. Dinner was followed with surprisingly good coffee (something of a rarity even at good restaurants). We ordered the chocolate tart, which they unfortunately ran out of, so they comped an alternative dessert. That was unnecessary but certainly generous as we would have bought the alternate dessert. After we started eating our substitute dessert, our host staff came by and let us know that the chef was able to create one last serving of the original chocolate tart dessert -- which was truly excellent and very thoughtful and accommodating. And, now service you would get at most any other restaurant even of this caliber. At this point, we are convinced that Chef Cliff (I think that's his name) and Sage Restaurant is the best fine dining option in Siskiyou County. If anyone knows of another, better place, let me know! read more

We enjoyed a wonderful meal at Sage Restaurant. Made some last minute reservations and they were able to get us a table on the patio. The patio was a gorgeous, shady garden setting. They had great vegan options and we ended up trying the little gem salad (hold the prosciutto), a chickpea and mushroom soup and their Vegan Special of the Day. I can't remember what it was called but it was a chickpea and sweet potato dish with a delicious creamy sauce topped with fresh herbs. Other dinner mates enjoyed the pesto pasta with goat cheese and tomato confit and the filet. We sampled several wines from their extensive wine list and were not disappointed. We finished up with the mango and basil sorbet...delicious!! read more

This place has been around for a while now. Staff is good but, food is even better. The only thing I did not like is the extra charge for a side of ranch; .25. The price is already high, I would think a ounce of ranch would be included. But, don't let that stop you from going and enjoying the great food. read more

We stayed a night at the historic McCloud Hotel, our third visit. The ambiance is still lovely, a warm fire in the lobby, well maintained vintage construction and decor. Dinner at Sage was the highlight. It was relaxed and comfortable but definitely white tablecloth. The servers were friendly and did a good job, particularly in being knowledgeable and enthusiastic about each dish. My steak was perfectly rare, my husband's double pork chop huge and tender. Vegetables were very nicely cooked and seasoned. We were delighted with the modern food and the turn-of-the-century atmosphere. All around an excellent experience. read more

Sage is a small, but incredibly cozy restaurant with delicious food. The moment you open the door - you see a fireplace, and a few nice tables. Friendly waitress will offer you a table, and you feel yourself like home. Service is so great and remarkable. I tried 8 Oz Filet Steak, and it was amazingly cooked. Delightful! Delicious food, courteous, friendly and professional service. This was a great experience. I forget our servers name now, maybe Natalie, she was wonderful. We were driving down to San Jose from Portland and stopped in Mount Shasta the day before Thanksgiving for the night. We came across Sage Restaurant and are so lucky we did. It has the atmosphere that Fawlty Towers WISHED it could. We are already trying to organize a Christmas trip back down to stay at the Hotel and visit the restaurant again. Well done Sage! read more

Thought we would try something new this visit and dropped into the restaurant. We were delightfully suprised at the flavorful menu. The crabcakes and cauliflower soup for appetizers were a great start. Followed by a crispy Steelhead and 8oz. Filet with wild sauteed mushrooms. YUM!!! An amazing wine list, reasonably priced, so we ordered the True Grit Reserve Petite Sirah, and it was a nice pairing. Dessert consisted of creme brulee and mango basil mint sorbet. Everything we had was outstanding, from the amuse-bouche, to the huge salad with the best blue cheese dressing, to the crab cake to the entrées (waiting for dessert to arrive but I can't imagine it would be anything less than perfect). The restaurant is classy intimate without being snobby. The meals are the type you would find in nice restaurants, and while not perfect they were worth the money paid and accompanying experience. The service staff were great. Checked on us regularly and were in good spirits. They knew their menu and could talk about the individual items. The couple I went with don't eat much and decided to split a salad and meal and even though There are very few tables, I don't know how busy it gets but it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a reservation during the busy season. read more

Our experience was delightful. We celebrated my wife's birthday and were given the royal treatment. Our server was courteous, friendly and professional. She frequently asked if everything was ok. For starters my wife ordered French Onion soup and I ordered crab cakes. Both were perfect. For entrees, my wife ordered the 8oz Filet of Beef Pan Roasted w/ butter, thyme, garlic, mashed potato and market veggoes. I had Wild Arctic Char seared with tarragon cream, asparagus, mushrooms, carrots, fingerling potatoes and crispy baked kale. Go somewhere else. We had late reservations and while seated at the time of the reservation, we did not see or server for 20 minutes that should have been a sign. Thankfully we placed an order for everything at once because the 20 minutes between seeing a server was not limited to our table. One couple waited from before we sat down for 25 min for their dessert. Another waited 15 for a bill and another 15 for it to be processed. I would have left had the McCloud Meat Market not been closed for an event. A couple next to us was sat down after we ordered and had both appetizers and entrees before us. We had one soup served 35 min after ordering and entrees served 25 min after that. The fish was poor quality and very fishy. I could smell it before tasting it. The sauce had a skin and was strangely sweet. While the waitress offered to make something else, we'd already been there after an hour and could not wait a second. The manager had to be hunted down made excuses that it was sweet cream causing the flavor and the other couple had to wait so long for coffee to be brewed. The chicken while edible was paired with an unnatural colored sauce. My fiancee could not finish his meal either. I understand fine dining takes time but this is ridiculous. Go any where else even if you drive to Mt Shasta. Go to the McCloud Meat Market and Tavern instead. Infinitely better food and drinks! read more

This is a very lovely little restaurant. While staying at the McCloud Hotel, tired from the long drive, we were delighted with the lovely dinner we enjoyed our first night in town. Hubby and I split the chevre and mushroom tart (so delicious!) and the wild rocket salad with strawberries and light, slightly sweet dressing -- a perfect combination. At our server's recommendation we had the chicken pot pie and the chicken piccata with mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus -- again so delicious and well prepared. An outstanding meal in small, lovely, white table-clothed dining room. Highly recommend. And very reasonably priced (but we are used to San Francisco/Palo Alto prices.) read more

Our party of 5 went to celebrate 2 birthdays in November. One person was a vegetarian. The menu had one entree item on it for a vegetarian so her choices were quite limited. The lamb, chicken and roast beef were rated by my party as all very good and extremely tender. I personally felt the beef could have been a bit more flavorful, and my sides were way to scarce on my plate. They brought out birthday cakes with candle for the 2 birthday people, and, shockingly they charged us $11 a piece for them. Say what?? Wandered in here by chance on road trip from Crater Lake to Healdsburg. Didn't expect much, but were deeply impressed with the food, service and wine list...presented in a lovely setting. This restaurant would hold its own in Paris, New York, London or San Francisco. Creative cold soup of coconut, ginger and cauliflower was creative "sunshine in a bowl." Chicken pot pie was savory and satisfying classic filling under a tall puff pastry cap. Braised lamb shank was mahogany colored and tender, over a bed of very fresh peas and parsnip. Lemon-berry mascarpone cake was moist and light. Don't know how such a small restaurant offers such a large menu and delivers this level of experience. read more

I am perplexed by a readers 1 star review. We were there on 9/11, perhaps the same night as them. We got there at 6:30 , earlier then our 7;00 reservation. They seated us shortly after. There were two groups of 6 and one other couple. I ordered a glass of sparkling wine which was promptly delivered. Meanwhile I looked at the wine list, which my only comment for change would be that for what they were offering it was rather pedestrian wines that were easily 2.5 above restaurant market or other wines that were way expensive for what they are (sorry but I work in the wine industry so I'm will aware of the restaurant pricing on most of your wines) that being said I found a nice wine that was tasteful and what I was looking for. While there wine list is anything but terrible, it could use some revamping. Now let's talk about the rest of the dinner. Our waitress was prompt and friendly. We asked her what her favorite things were and her suggestions were perfect. We had the crabcakes which were to die for and probably the best I've had anywhere, tomato bisque for starters ....rich and creamy. Perfectly timed afterwards were the Trout with a dill and caper sauce and asparagus that was cooked firm yet tender. Chicken Pot pie had a flakey crust and savory creamy filling with moist white meat. We moved into the arts and crafts lobby of the Hotel to finish our wine and further enjoy the ambiance for our anniversary and have our dessert.. Something we never order but everything had been so good we felt we had to end it with the lush three tiered chocolate moose. We also live in a resort tourist town and frequently fine at zagat and Michelin rated places and this experience easily topped some of our local spots! This is not only always delicious, but it has a homey yet gourmet feel that inspires me to cook more. Portions are great sized, but with plenty of flavor to make you savor every bite and take it slow. We went last Memorial Day weekend and honestly it was some of the greatest food. They have a variety of options on their menu. I'm always worrisome when I go to new places because I don't eat meat. I have had the great fortune of dining at Sage five times and each visit seems to just get better...not an easy accomplishment given it was amazing the first time! The steak is cooked to perfection, the mushroom tart was savory and creatively presented and my 11 year old asks me if I'll ever be able to replicate the perfect deliciousness of the salmon he ate at Sage (alas, that will be 'no.'). Returned to the Sage Restaurant in the McCloud Hotel after a couple years. Still as great as before. Although they are touting a new chef, I thought it was as before - great. Not sure it could have been better. The service was friendly and not overbearing, The price is right - probably about 60-70% of what the meal would have cost in San Francisco. The fish dish was superb, the lamb shank was perfectly cooked, the wine was reasonably priced, the coffee was excellent (and I find most restaurant coffee to be akin to boiled water). If you're anywhere near McCloud at dinner time, don't miss this place. read more

We thought this was the best meal of our vacation in Mt Shasta. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere was very pleasant. We had The rocket arugula salad and the steelhead trout which were superb! The dinner was topped off by a delicious Pavlova and strawberry rhubarb pie. Bad food, slow everything, complete lack of customer service or restaurant etiquette. It looks like any previous review(s) must be written based on the "big fish in a small pond" theory-which is exactly what Sage is...a "fine dining" spot in a dearth of ANY dining spots. We did eat there, our reservations were for 6:30, and despite at least 4 tables being unoccupied we still waited 20 minutes to be seated with no one ahead of us. The rest of our meal proceeded at that same pace-as though the whole kitchen/waitstaff was operating in slow-motion and underwater. Felt like it was a 1 person kitchen --everything came out so very slowly. Took another 10 minutes to get water, another 10 for the bread--and the butter pat and its tiny container were ice-cold. We ordered--15 minutes for 1 salad to appear-must say it was very tasty spinach and blue cheese but with an inadequate and mostly bland dressing. A further 20 minutes after the salad was removed for entrees to arrive- grilled salmon quite good. with a nice crispy, browned exterior but served with lentils--?--and asparagus---in September---?---stalks quite tough. My order was mushroom risotto, it arrived and was a brown glop in a bowl-no creaminess, no bite to the rice (not even sure the rice used was arborio) and an overwhelming sage flavor-and the menu description of the dish did NOT even mention sage. The mess tasted like a mushy Thanksgiving dressing and had an unpleasant and heavy flavor-maybe wine added at the last minute? In any case, it was inedible. I took one bite and set it aside, the waitress appeared and asked if all was ok-I said the risotto was unlike any risotto I've ever made or ordered anywhere. She asked specifics-I gave her specifics-no brothy-ness or creaminess, heavy sage & wine flavor, mushy rice, no sign of mushrooms etc. Her one comment in reply was, "Well it was made today." I said not a word but wondered how early in the day and how many times had it been re-heated. She removed the bowl, asked if I would like to order something else. I said no, thank you, that I had shared my husband's spinach salad and would have bit of his salmon. I was very polite throughout the whole exchange-did not call her over to complain, simply set the food aside, and continued chatting with said husband. The bill came 15 minutes after we said no to dessert. I was charged for the risotto. I told the waitress I did not appreciate being expected to pay for something I did not eat. She took the check to the kitchen and after a 20 minute wait brought check back---still with the risotto on the bill! We were not offered a free dessert or coffee or glass of wine to compensate for the sub-par item, nor was it taken off the bill. I saw 1 other diner also order the risotto-take 3 bites and let it sit until the bus boy picked it up. To remain a "big fish" even in a small, or non-existent, pond requires a bit more than this restaurant seems capable of offering. In McCloud stick with the burger and pizza joint. read more
