The good: the beer. The bad: everything else. The waitress was moderately freiendly however uninterested. The table was cramped where we were originally sat so we requested a larger table. The hostess gave us some push back because they didnt want to sit us on a larger table where we could have elbow room because a large group might come in. The food tasted americanized, tame. The food here is really great in some ways and misses the mark in other ways. I was bordering on two stars but the warm homey atmosphere and the warm fire pushed it to three. I loved the mix of veggies and flavors in the pad tai. The coconut soup just seemed watery and "off" something in it didn't taste right. On my second visit I had a wonderful grilled salmon salad but my partners dish was lackluster and only passable. I saw other people ordering fish specials and they looked amazing. This review is solely for the PHO. I've never eaten inside here other than the Pho. Which is quite good, the best I've found in the area so far; but compared to NYC or Dallas; I've had much better. That being said if you need a good Pho to kick that itching craving; seek no further. The broth was good; it had a good amount of flavor, it wasn't terribly bursting at the seams, but it did the job. The owner was super friendly and the atmosphere really nice, so it pains me to write this review. We were starving and needed gluten free options. Vietnamese is usually a good place as most ingredients are fresh and there are few gluten worries. We started off with the lime chicken app which was very very good. Be careful because the wood skewers were still in the chicken but had been cut back making them hard to see. I then had Tum Yum Goong soup with shrimp and vegtables..my favorite soup. But not this time. I can't believe the veggies were frozen. That's right the old carrot, broccoli, green bean, and cauliflower mix with the weird texture you got as a kid. Hate that stuff. The broth was very dark like a beefy broth, hardly any spice and no discernable lemon grass flavor. I barely ate any of it. Can't believe it wasn't fresh. Huge disappointment. My companion had pad thai. Usually gluten free. She got sick from it. I did not like it. Agsin more sweet than spicy and no peanut flavor. The veggies in this dish were fresh or at least not frozen. My husband and I are originally from Old Saybrook, and we would pass this place every day without stopping. Parking lot always looked empty, and in a small town that is usually not a good sign. Just recently, my husband and I came back to town to visit friends and family. These days we are eat much healthier than we were kids. After days of eating pizza, fired clam strips, etc I was craving a healthier meal and decided to Yelp to see if there were any gems in this town I had overlooked. Sure enough, Saigon City had awesome reviews and sounded like a nice healthy place to eat. My husband and I had never had Vietnamese food, but love Thai, and some of the reviews raved about the taste and freshness of the dishes, so it just made sense that we try lunch there. We didn't go inside, so I can't tell you about the decor, but I can tell you that the outside patio is adorable, cozy, and definitely a wonderful place to eat on a nice warm day. Most of the tables have umbrellas to block the sun, and you get a nice nosey view of Rte 1 and Dairy Queen. Since we were there for lunch, we decided to order off the lunch menu and take advantage of the awesome deals. It's a limited menu and do offer a full menu any time during the day, but I will say I was more than pleased with my selection on the lunch menu. My husband got the spicy chicken bento box, and I got the Thai Spicy chicken meal. Same main dish, but he had some salad, a Thai Roll, and some fresh summer fruit in his bento box. My plate came and I was shocked with how much food they gave me...my plate was loaded with deliciousness! I even got to take some home! My kind of place. :) The food itself was really good. Came out hot, fresh, and had a wonderful flavor. The Spicy chicken we ordered medium...tasted mild but had a little kick. I may go a little spicier next time, or just ask for extra spices on the side so I can kick it up to my liking. It came in a curry type of sauce...enough to satisfy but not so much that my food was swimming in it like I'd seen other curry dishes at other similar restaurants. In my opinion (and I'm a sauce lover) it was just right. Next time we go we said we want to try an appetizer or soup and split a meal b/c of the amount of food we got. It's sure to be enough to feed us again. We got out of there for less than $25 too...and that included a great tip! (We rarely tip less than 20%) Be warned that where the lunch prices are great, the dinner prices are definitely pricier...meals looked to range from $15+ per plate. There are cheaper soups and appetizers to choose from as well though. My husband and I love a great deal, so although the dinner menu looked nice, knowing that we can get a great lunch for a great price I'm sure when we visit town again that'll be the way we go. All in all where I would probably rate this place a 4 in more populated areas with tons of meal choices, this is by far deserves a 5 for Old Saybrook. Don't let the empty parking lot fool you like it did us for so many years. Grab some friends or family...or your spouse...and head down for a really nice treat. I work a few minutes down the road from Saigon City and was craving Pho. During my lunch break I called and placed an order of Veggie Fresh Rolls and Flank Steak Pho for pickup. Upon arrival, I was met by the sweetest woman running the restaurant. She was friendly and personable and made my day! When I finally got back to work and had a chance to eat my lunch, my food was just as expected... AWESOME! The fresh rolls were great and the pho was the best I've had. Stopped in for lunch the other day and was pleasantly pleased. The service was quite attentive and we spent some time talking with one of the owners about her experiences. That said, the food was quite good, freshly prepared with the proper condiments on the side. The Pho was quite tasty and could be livened up with the hoisin or sriracha sauce. Personally, I prefer just dipping the meat into the sauce. The beef was a little overcooked, I asked for rare. Technically, you should just pour the heated broth over the meat. I have to test that theory when I make some Pho at home (I just bought the knuckle bones, so we're ready to go). The spring rolls were small flavourful mouthfulls. Nice & crispy with a shrimpy flavour (dried shrimp???). The chicken egg noddle soup was very good. Bits of tender chicken breast with thin egg noodles. The Thai bento box with Pad Thai was nice. The fresh fruit impressed my wife who requested a few more pieces of watermelon. The Pad Thai had a wonderful fresh egg taste, but could have had a little more peanuts sprinkled on to intensify that note. Maybe a little sesame oil would help (horrors!). The portions were adequate for lunch, you are not going to go away hungry, but you will not have a day's worth of lunch in a doggie bag either. Within the space of a mile on Rt 1, there are two restaurants that I will be placing in my Pantheon when I'm in the 'hood for food. Italian (al Forno) I can get pretty much anywhere, except in the midwest and in the big square states, but decent Vietnamese is much harder to find. read more

It is very difficult to find a Vietnamese/Thai restaurant that was so good, it deserved the time to post a positive review. Saigon City is most certainly worth the time. Their delicately prepared steamed dumplings as an appetizer will immediately change your perception of how dumplings should be prepared. These are light, yet flavorful, and just enough to wet your appetite for the main course. I have enjoyed both their cashew chicken and lemongrass chicken dishes - with each, the spices were perfectly balanced, and the chicken with the vegetables were perfectly cooked. The service at Saigon City is friendly and fast. The restaurant itself is a remolded New England home - and although the decor could use some updating, it is especially charming in the winter when they have a real fire burning in the main dining room fireplace, and a wood burning stove in the auxiliary dining room. read more

I am always on the hunt for good, authentic Pho and was excited to see that this place offered options. My wife and I went on a Saturday around lunch and we were the only ones in the restaurant. It looked as though a large group had just left and three or four tables around us were a mess. On server, a young man in sweatshirt and sweatpants, was mildly friendly and came to get our order. It felt strangely as if I was eating in his parents living room and I had taken him away from a good video game session. The Pho came quickly and had a strong Asian five spice taste (as opposed to a fresh herb broth taste). The large chunks of carrots just threw off the whole bowl. If I could give this place a negative rating I would. Not only was our food spoiled, the women owner was very rude. We ordered a bunch of food and they forgot one of our entrees, which was no big deal, except the rice we got was rotten and moldy and the fried dumplings were almost burnt on the outside but raw in the middle. When we went to return the food the chef owner was nice and apologized but his wife yelled at us, claiming the rotten rice did not come from her restaurant and when we said it did and we are sorry but we can't eat this, she replied "maybe you meant to order Chinese food? Based on number of stars on Yelp, we weren't expecting much. Our minds and taste buds were blown, in the best of ways. Between the 4 of use (2 adults and 2 teens) we ordered miso soup, coconut soup, pork dumplings, catfish in clay pot, pork red curry and Saigon spicy beef. Possibly one of the worst meals I have ever had. We went here for the first time on Christmas eve a group of 8 of us. We all ordered when the food came the waitress had no idea what each plate was or the type of meat that was on the plates. I got the SAIGON SPICY BEEF which was supposed to be a spicy curry and beef marinated in coconut.I tasted no curry, coconut or spice it was just a plate of over sauced beef and veg. There was no clear noodles and they served it with rice. As I looked around the table at everybody else food it all looked the same just with different meat. Service is good, portions are generous and reasonably priced, and the menu is extensive so there's plenty of options. I've enjoyed their curry and recently had the barbecue beef with rice noodles--the meat was perfectly spiced and sitting on top of tons of greens and vegetables, so I felt like I was eating a healthy meal! This is our go to restaurant in the area. The staff is always welcoming to all customers. Me and my girlfriend always order the same meal, shrimp with lemongrass and spicy Saigon shrimps. Every time I have this dish it's absolutely lovely. Perfect amount of flavor and heat. The Saigon spicy shrimp has an array of vegetables including mushrooms, celery, baby corn, carrots and peppers.
