I decided to take my chance and go to the restaurant later that night. No tables available, but they did have a seat at the bar available. Wait time was 1.5 hours. The cool thing about sitting at the bar here is that you get a front-row seat to the kitchen preparing the steak. The Ax Handle Rib Eye is massive and looked incredible as they cooked it, but I decided to order the Butcher's Steak. The steak was delicious and cooked just right. We also ordered the Pan-Fried Mashed Potatoes which I thought was a must-try. Such a unique dish! While researching St. Anselm, we couldn't wait to try the Sticky Toffee Pudding. So glad we did! My only complaint was that it tasted slightly salty. I noticed bits of sea salt garnished on top, and thought that it was unnecessary since the dish already tasted great. St. Anselm has been on my list for years, but never got around to making it a priority. Finally got a chance to check it out with my family and everyone enjoyed it - we all ordered hanger steaks based on some other Yelp reviews. The steak was tender and flavorful. I usually prefer other cuts, but about an hour after dinner, I felt really good, like I had eaten a nice home cooked meal. So they're doing something right here. The fingerling potatoes were also very good and not greasy. I definitely will be back to try other cuts. The service was okay, not overly friendly, but that's just my preference. I want my host and servers to coddle me; I grew up a soft millennial with a hardened shell from living in NYC so I need TLC whenever I can get it. The ambiance is rustic, earthy feeling. read more

Walked in on a Friday night, no reservation. The wait was 45 mins for 2 at the bar, not bad for the top rated steakhouse in Brooklyn. The restaurant is small and narrow. The staff were very friendly. It took a while before the bartender came over to take our order, other than that he was great. For starters, we had the Caesar salad and the steak tartare. The salad was very good, one of the best Caesar's I've ever had. The tartare was underwhelming, not very flavorful. We went with the butchers cut, the Denver cut, and the venison which was not on the menu. The butchers cut which was a hangar steak was my favorite, the meat was very soft/melts in your mouth. The Denver cut was more flavorful and fatty. The venison rack was very tender. All of the meat was cooked to perfection and topped with a garlic butter. Went here for christmas and it was packed! Its a very cute local restaurant with moody lights perfect for a date night or family outing. The meats were amazing, however there is almost an hour or more wait if you get the ribeye. So just be prepared. Some of the hosts force you to get an appetizer. We said no to any appetizers at first, and the guy waiter said you should get an appetizer as it's going to be a long wait. I said it was fine we can just wait, and he persisted so we got it. But I did not really appreciate him forcing us to get something we didnt need. Nonetheless the food is great and juicy and a perfect medium rare on the ribeye but still. Get the Ax Handle Ribeye! We'll get to the star of the show but I did start with the tartare and salad which were nice starters. The tartare was fresh, though slightly under seasoned. The salad was a touch too vinegary, I missed asking for the dressing on the side like I usually do, however I still recommend it. The St. Anslem speciality is the Ax Handle Ribeye which is priced based on the weight. It is available during lunch as well, your server will have the weight availability for the day when requested. One negative is that it's not cut to order and the price will vary based on what's available. As far as the ribeye is concerned, it was perfectly charred, and medium rare as requested, with a pat of butter on top as if it needed any other accompaniments. It wasn't needed, but that butter did go well with the side of pan fried mashed potatoes. The Ribeye was definitely a splurge, not an everyday meal. The decor was rustic and the service was very attentive and friendly. They do have brunch specials that are more reasonable which I hope to come back for someday soon. read more

Came for my son's 21st, he loves trying new low key places. This steak house in Williamsburg is giving casual fine dining with an open kitchen concept, and a wrap around chef counter. It's all wood and exposed brick decor almost like a sorority cabin (wasn't sure of the theme). The staff was pretty attentive, every staff member is your server but not too helpful in recommendations. Appetizers were the sourdough bread with salted butter which was fresh and delicious (we had to ask To warm it up but yes it's an app and yes it's $16) & clams ( a bit sea salty, and also had sour dough bread on it, which I feel the waiter should've mentioned. Drinks consist of beer and wine and spritzers. My son ordered the steak (prime rib) that came out to perfection and I wasn't took hungry I just ordered the giant prawn and we shared the a la cart sides (long long string beans, spinach and pan fried mashed potatoes) all very tasty and unique. Been to St.Anselm before, but this time we were blown away by Jen's commitment to curating a special evening for us. One of those meals you share with friends and will probably always look back on. She was so meticulous with the specials, made great recommendations and her attention to detail and ability to sense the moment we were in was impeccable. Had the loveliest time at St. Anselm. From the moment we stepped in, you can tell it was a no-fuss steakhouse. More importantly, from the way the restaurant smelled, you knew right away that your food will be delicious. We both got steaks (of course)- the Flatiron and the NY strip, and both perfectly medium and tender and flavorful. The side of pick relish with the Flatiron was particularly delightful, the Caesar salad was honestly the best I've had in a LONG time. The spinach gratin for me was a little heavy, but my man absolutely loved it and as a carnivore, that speaks volumes. Dessert was affogato and an sticky toffee pudding. The affogato was okay, a safe choice that would be difficult to mess up. But the pudding- mm! Delightful, not too sweet, and not too heavy even though they were so generous with the whip cream. There's a hint of salt that comes through in the pudding that paired especially well with the the whip cream. So good. Service was lovely. We had to ask to be re-seated due to a cold draft, and our waiter was able to get us resettled effortlessly. Being at the chef's counter honestly made the experience more enjoyable- we loved seeing how the chefs grilled, how hard they worked while making it seemed effortless at the same time, and their banter with one another made the atmosphere even more comfortable. I want to have good things to say about st anslem but I was just there and had major issues with the food. I had slab bacon. They serve 3 pieces. Between all 3 pieces, it was 90 percent pure fat with no meat. One piece had zero meat. How do you serve that? They continued on the same theme with the NY strip, which was at the most 4" wide which is normal but had a 1" fat piece running on one entire end. Its like an $80 steak once tax and tip are included. Again, I wish I could support them as ive had decent meals in the past but when you start saving money by doing crap like this you lose me. read more

But steak itself taste super delicious. Even my husband order medium but they still give him medium rare but the meat is very soft and juicy, so he is ok with that. - Pot ce Creme is good but...... - Basque Cheesecake is better! I only eat half and the rest of it my hubby took it and I have to tell him that is my dessert so he has to stop taking my food. Service is good and very friendly. We definitely will come back to try more menu. I'm not sure we will have the same excellent experience when the place going to regular busy service time but because of their delicious food. A group of friends and I decided to stop by here for lunch on a Sunday - we had reservations for 12 pm and they were really nice about us being late (we did call in advance to let them know that we will likely be late). For the weekends - they do have special items on the lunch menu which we appreciate. The menu itself is not too big; focusing on a few key items. They are a wine and beer place so if you are a cocktail fan this likely isn't the place for you. It was very rustic vibes with really nice staff. The majority of us got the steak and eggs which was absolutely delicious. The meat was super tender and the potatos were nicely seasoned. For sides we got the Spinach Gratin which was nice and creamy and also the pan fried mash potatos which were also delicious - so crispy and hot. For dessert we all got the affogato - they used regular ice cream instead of gelato but it was still delicious nontheless. The steak offerings are not bad and some would consider that "bargains" for what the prices in NY are these days. Nonetheless, there are much better steakhouses in NY. The reviews looked good, so my family decided to give this place a try during our most recent NYC trip. Ambience is kinda dark and screams hip. Feels more like a local hangout dinner spot as opposed to an institution wanting to achieve Michelin stars. My dad wasn't hungry, so we opted to share two steaks: the NY strip steak and the butcher's steak. We also added an order of coutneck clams. The butcher's steak was the best steak-price ratio I've had in a long time! For $34 you get a nice angus beef quality steak of decent size. I actually found the butcher's steak to be better than the NY strip, but that's my opinion. The clams were average, nothing too crazy in terms of taste and what was added inside. Service was excellent here. Was it the best steakhouse I've been to in NYC? That may be pushing it a bit, but that $34 butcher's steak is easily the best steak deal one can have, and I'd totally come back just for that. read more
