Awesome shop for ink. Understanding the walk in process will ensure you experience is a good one. Doors open at noon on a first come first serve basis. People start lining up around 10:30-10:45 so come early. The tattoos need to be palm sized or so and something they can knock out in roughly two hours or less. If your tattoo fits that criteria you get access to some awesome artists on a walk in basis. You can check the schedule of certain artists on their website if you want something specific. The space is clean and well appointed with a nice selection of historic flash art to keep you entertained while your artist gets ready. If your tattoo isn't a two hour ordeal or if you're not in a "walk in" situation, contact their sister studio Liquid Courage for appointments or larger scale artwork. Highly recommended! I've had work done by both Ryan and Dan but you can't go wrong with any of their artists. read more

This was an amazing experience. I loved the experience and everyone was very accommodating. Getting a tattoo can be a scary experience, however their handling of the situation leads me to believe this would be a great place for first time recipients!! I would recommend to all my friends. Just make sure your tattoo is a little smaller, over 2 hours and they wont do it....If your tattoo is over 2 hours make an appointment with their sister location LIQUID COURAGE. The artists are the same!!! Also be warned there is another tattoo place nearby called needles and ink, I accidentally entered, not to the fault of sailors grave, but still be warned it is horrifying. Sailor's Grave is a must visit for anyone that values their time and great artwork. This shop is walk in only, and it's a super cool breath of fresh air from what a lot of tattooing has become. Dan did the cool little guy on my thigh that's still a little red. I went on a Wednesday, got there around 11:20 and there were already four people in from of me. I definitely recommend getting there a tad early. As for pricing- it's extremely good. Dan had a super light hand and worked pretty quick too. I could tell he's the type of artist that wasn't going to let me leave unless he was satisfied. After it seemed like the shading was done and he unplugged his machine, I saw him turn his head a few times. He plugged it back it and went through and touched up a few spots. Definitely a man proud of his work. Johnna was the other artist in that day, and man was she cool. Hanging out and talking with the crew that was working made the whole experience just that much better. Honestly couldn't have thought of a better way to spend my day besides looking through the flash on their walls and getting a new banger on the leg Side note- this shop is cash only so I recommend stopping at the bank before. read more

They are awesome! If you don't want to make an appointment and wait several weeks to get into liquid courage then go here! You get the same great staff and the same quality service! This is a walk in only shop I believe, and someone told me that if your tattoo takes too long they won't do it at this shop. If you go on a weekend it can be hard to get in unless you get in early. I got there 15 min before they opened and there was a line already at the door and it was freezing cold! I can't even imagine if it wasn't so cold, how many people sometimes wait in line before they open. We waited probably around an hour or so and I was the third person they tattooed that day. Chris Ayalin was my tattoo artist visiting from Seattle. He did a great job! I would have gone to their other shop if it was a harder more detailed tattoo and I would have been happy to wait several weeks for a bigger tattoo from liquid courage. This one I got was very small and basically just a lot of straight lines so it was perfect for me to just walk in that day and get it done then! I'll always go to sailors grave or liquid courage for any future tattoos! read more

I was visiting for a weekend and excited to find a walk-in studio after some quick googling. I read all the FAQs online and prepared my email to send. I looked up the artists that would be there that wee and looked at their instagrams. Three days before I was in-town, one of the artists posted a 5-hour color torso tattoo and the sailors grave IG reposted it-I thought perfect. I wanted some black roses and fern on my chest and it certainly would be half that time. The first day my email sent at 10:00 exactly. 2 hours later I get a reply saying my email did not arrive early enough. Oh well. The next day, I sent an email at 10:02. I received an email back that my tattoo was much too large of a project and that they only do 2 hour "one-shot tattoos" there. I was very confused because that disagrees with what the website, SG instagram, and artist's instagram all say. Overall I was very excited to get a tattoo in a new city and I was greatly disappointed. I regret the time spent trying to make it work with this shop. read more

So i went with my boyfriend about a week ago to this shop and they accepted walk in appointments so we got there around 10:30 when they opened at 12. When they opened there were a few people in line ahead of us and they wrote down all the times they could take their new clients and what they wanted. one of the employees, he seemed like the manager type, was very intimidating when asking what we wanted to get and i was reluctant to tell him as he just turned down a customer who wanted a tattoo similar to a photo she referenced. after we got our tattoos scheduled we waited around until 3 pm when i was finally ready to be seen. he asked for me to airdrop the picture i showed him when you're supposed to send an email of all your inspo so they can see all of it at once. he draws it up and i go over to look (i'm getting a flower bouquet) and i asked to add one stem of a flower and he tells me that it's going to look too busy. i was immediately shot down when i asked to include something on my tattoo that's going permanently on my body. so that was the first red flag. then we waited around until he finished everything up and drew the stencil. he showed me the size of it from very far away and i just agreed that it was fine. i had to ask to see my stencil so i could make sure i liked it and the size of it. when we first started the tattoo he didn't communicate very much and during the tattoo i felt the same. this is the second tattoo i've gotten and usually they update you during to let you know how far they've gotten or ask you if you're okay. i didn't get anything from him. it was until my boyfriend would check on me and then he would ask me if i'm doing alright. after the tattoo was done we had to wait around again for my boyfriend's tattoo that was at 5pm. the artists would go on smoke breaks and not really say anything. and when they would come back in they just seemed annoyed that we were there. we ended up getting food next door and they said they would be ready by 5 when we came back and by 5:10pm they were still outside not really acknowledging that we were there and my boyfriend ended up leaving and they never called or even said anything as he left. that would have been his first tattoo and since the service and vibe of the artists seemed like we were in the way we didn't want to give them more business. i almost regret my tattoo based off my experience here. i work in customer service and i hate complaining but this is a reflection on your work and business as an artist who is putting something permanent on someone. especially if they make commission they should try a little harder to make their guests feel welcome and want to come back. read more

Steady hands, patient humble attitudes. The guy who did my butterflies had red hair, i am terrible with names so maybe he should have signed his work because i tell ppl where and would like to remember his name. I shall call him the artist. I took a detour recently and will never forgive myself for not returning here first. I can't get other tats because i compare then to my masterpiece on my leg. Their posted hours say they're open till 8pm, but then said they wouldn't have taken me in anyways when I showed up at 6 pm to find the door locked? I am so disappointed. I planned around work and other events for weeks to go there only to find the door locked at 6 pm and be met with a "shoulda come earlier" attitude from the woman who gave me my first tattoo over 20 years ago. I was so stoked to get super simple 1.5" black line 20th anniversary tattoos with my husband from her. So much for that? I'm so let down. I've been tattooed at Liquid Courage many times before, but I really got into the more open environment at Sailor's Grave. We all interacted with one another and even if the conversation didn't directly include any of us there wasn't any apprehension on throwing in our two cents. It was very comfortable and we laughed quite a bit. I was the only female in the shop at the time too. I've been to other open air type shops before and I've always gotten the feeling like I am being gawked at. I never got that feeling when I was at Sailor's. I think it's a perfect example of the type of professionalism that they bring to an industry that can be notorious for everything but that. We decided to check this tattoo shop out because it accepted walk-ins. On the window it says call to be let in so we called multiple times no one answered, there was about 2 groups waiting outside. No one was able to get them on the phone to open the door although we saw multiple people walking around inside and there was no sign on the door saying they were closed or full. read more

I've been around Liquid Courage for my fair share of time in the chair, having my chest piece and entire left half-sleeve done there by the outstanding artist Andrew Milko, and I recommend that shop frequently. Sailor's Grave is their walk-in only shop located in Benson and uses the same phenomenal artists who are rotated between the walk-in shop and the appointment shop (Liquid). The half sleeve is obviously a much larger piece and required several appointments to complete, however, I had a small piece that wasn't too time intensive that I wanted done and knew that it could easily be done in one session. With that being the case, I went over to the crew at Sailor's Grave and got to business. Johnna was the artist working at the time and being co-owner of Liquid Courage, I was well aware of her work and pumped to get some art. I already had a very good idea of what I wanted so I gave her the rundown and she went to work on drawing it up. Perfect placement, a light hand and a well done piece was the result for the art I will wear the rest of my life proudly among my ever growing collection of ink. Highly recommended if you're looking to get a smaller piece done or are feeling a bit impulsive. If you have a larger piece or one more intensive to detail/planning then hit up their main shop Liquid Courage. Either way, you'll be getting amazing work from a very, very talented group that takes pride in their work and treat each tattoo as if it's their official business card. read more

Otherwise, show up at Sailor's Grave about 30 minutes before they open and you might be 3rd in line like I was. I showed up at 11:30 am, they opened promptly at noon, and I was out by 1:30 pm. We've both been to sketchy shops and cheaper places - stepping into Sailors Grave was the tattoo experience we always deserved. The guys were so caring towards everyone in yhe shop and each other. The tattoos we recieved were high quality and beautiful. I appreciated how into they talked through every step of the process and answered every question. Called liquid courage and they were booked 3 weeks out and referred me to their sister shop which is this place. Walked in and was immediately seen by Jason, one of their artists. It's a $60 min and when it comes to forever, I don't mind paying the price for quality. I originally wanted my tattoo to be smaller but the artist was professional and explained why he felt more comfortable with making it a tad larger. I love my tattoo, the place is clean and and the staff was welcoming. read more

My husband and I decided we wanted tattoos for our birthdays. Being newbies to the tattoo world we did review searches and saw liquid courage got really good reviews. We went there not realizing we should have made an appointment awhile in advance. Since we were wanting to get them sooner than their next open appointment they referred us to Sailor's Grave. Prior to going, I looked up their website and saw that people sometimes form lines outside before they open, so we got there early and started the line (about 20 minutes before they opened). Within 5 minutes there were 3 people behind us (went on a Thursday). I had an idea of what I wanted, but didn't have an exact picture. Andrew was able to capture the essence of what I wanted and whipped up a sketch really quickly. My husband had a picture of what he wanted and he just emailed the screenshot and was ready to go quickly also. I didn't really have any reference for pricing other than what my friends had told me they had paid for their tattoos, but the prices we were quoted sounded fair to me. There is an ATM next door if you need to get cash, but there is a $200 limit. The atmosphere was great. I felt comfortable from the start. The work areas were very clean and looked organized. Andrew and Jake were both very approachable and answered all our questions. Overall had a great experience and even though this was a random idea my husband and I decided to do together, it turned out so great I want another already! read more

I have gotten piercings at liquid courage and wanted to get my first tattoo so I was really excited to go here since I have heard such amazing things about it. I wanted to get a finger tattoo which I know all the risks of blowouts and fading.. etc. but I finally settled on what I wanted. I was kind of nervous but excited to get my first tattoo since it would commemorate my wedding and it was super meaningful. Upon walking in, one of the ladies called from across the room at me asked what I wanted and that it would be a long wait. I explained that I wanted a small finger tattoo and she began to tell me from across the room that it was a bad idea and nobody would do that and that the Pinterest pictures were fake and I would have to sign a waiver (which I knew and was willing to do). The other people in line began to laugh at me which was really embarrassing and I started to tear up since I was nervous to begin with. I understand if that tattoo is something they don't do which is fine, I just wish they would've come up to me and explained kindly in private instead of telling me across the room so that everyone could hear. It was really embarrassing and I don't think I will come in again. read more

Take all the awesomeness of Liquid Courage, and not require an appointment, and you have Sailor's Grave. All the same great artists work there. The shop is clean and open. The wait time isn't bad at all. I love Liquid Courage, but I suck with patience so I don't like scheduling appointments way in advance, so I go to Sailor's Grave instead. I've had 2 tattoos from Dave which were cover-ups, he did a great job on those. I also have one from De La Rosa. I've seen everyone's portfolios and I'd be willing to get tattooed by any of them. They're all great people, too. No jerk attitudes. They all know their stuff. Drop by and chat them up about your next tattoo. If you want something big and complicated you might have to schedule an appointment with Liquid Courage instead, but for reasonable sized pieces that won't take all day to design, see if Sailor's Grave can whip something up for you or just pick something off the flash wall. They have a lot of Sailor Jerry flash too. I've noticed people comment about the more open layout of Sailor's Grave. It's kinda fun because everyone is chatting with each other like a barber shop or something. I can see how that would be good for people who don't like being in smaller spaces. Both locations are very comfortable. The people working there make you feel at ease. They have everything I look for in a shop: Cleanliness, professionalism, great service, great artistic skills, great atmosphere. I got my boyfriends name tattooed a week ago. Jake was my tattoo artist.He got the font ready in no time for me. I am very happy with the tattoo.The biggest pro I found with the place was that they are more concerned about the tattoo than money. I wanted the tattoo on my finger but Jake suggested me not to get it done as it would fade away in a few days. Finally, I got it on my wrist. A small drawback was that I did not get many options on my tattoo fonts or designs as the artist was a li'l impatient on that day. Overall, I loved my experience at sailors grave. read more
