We had a fine evening at SJAH, my club was well put together with quality and care but did not have as much of the spicy mayo as I hoped. My wife's fish and chips was incredible, top notch. Our kids are well. The drink list and beer list was more than adequate. The patio on the harbor was a fine spot, especially amidst the Busker Festival. The Saint John Ale House is located right next to the Hilton in Uptown Saint John and can be accessed from with the Market Square or from the boardwalk outside. It has a low-light comfortable atmosphere with unobtrusive rock music playing in the background making for a very welcoming setting. The waiters are courteous and friendly (the waitresses cute as a button) and the kitchen seems sufficiently staffed so that food wait time is not too lengthy. My first instincts went to the buttermilk chicken fingers on my lazy Sunday supported by a subbed-out-from-fries Spinach salad. The salad has a delightfully unique appearance with a pink pickled egg that complements the taste of the well-sauced and flavored poppy dressing. (I've since re-ordered the salad by itself because it's a very satisfying meal with some chicken or other meat on top and recommend it.) The beer selection is HUGE, counting over 75+ of beers to choose from both locally and international. I'm not a drinker myself so for taste I cannot help you unfortunately. The buttermilk fingers contain a blend of 14 different herbs and spices and comes with a thin crusty layer that begs for your attention. Teamed up with a zesty, almost spicy, sauce on the side the gives the tongue a whole-bodied sensation. A very good take on a popular pub food. I ended off with the blueberry tart that I won't give away to you, but disappointment is not one of the ingredients. The Saint John Ale House is a landmark in Saint John and a must visit for anyone in town or when rolling off the cruise ships in the port nearby. It has a simple well-selected menu that will not disappoint. SJAH has taken everything you love about pub food and redone it to fit artisanal beauty and craftsmanship standards prevalent in contemporary food establishments. Love the motif inside - very cool. Beers were good, Bartender was awesome. Apparently their chicken tenders have been on TV a few times, dunno, but we had them and oh my oh my. I dont know what they do for the batter but its like jerk-seasoning or something. The chicken inside was still moist and the outside so crunchy! I'm so picky about fries and when this came out, the fries look like the kind that might be cut in the kitchen, onsite... but are soggy when cooked if you know what i mean. They were not. Not at all. I still have great memories of this dinner. I ordered the Prime Rib Sandwich & Mash and it was amazing. Everything about the dish was good. The flavours and textures were spot on. Portion size was huge too. My friend got the bacon wrapped scallops and those were good too. What made the meal even better was we were lucky to have patio seats during the Saint John Idol competition that was happening outside the restaurant. (We only sat at the bar, no food) The ambiance of this place is awesome, really cool looking, alot of wood fixtures, awesome bar, great tap system, and outdoor seating. It's rustic industrial and cool. The staff wear t-shirts and jeans, which i think is cool. Their beer selection is AWESOME, alot of Canadian beers on tap, really unique stuff. I love the cask thing too. They also have a good selection of whisky, charged by the ounce, which is nice. First the Octopus salad and then the Kentucky fried Rabbit followed by well made classic cocktails makes this place a perfect spot to dine in any occasion. I traveled to Saint John for work and this quickly became a favorite destination to dine. The ambiance, staff, and food are all superb. The prices are very reasonable for the great quality if food. The seasonal items are also great. The tip for the beer drinker is the huge selection of beer in the pub downstairs. Must be over twenty on tap and many more bottled. Great experience. Our waiter Jody was really nice and made some great recommendations. We started with the grilled zucchini salad that had some nice complexity (the zuc had a little kick and the almonds were a nice addition). Next up was the buttermilk deep fried chicken fingers. Not only was this really tasty with the chipotle sauce, but the loaded mashed potatoes put this over the top (if you are a mashed potato person like I am you HAVE to try this). We came here after a nice hike at Irving nature park. Ordered the prime rib sandwich and the buttermilk fried chicken fingers that apparently were recommended by the Food network. The prime rib sandwich turned out to be more of a hash with sliced prime rib, mushrooms in gravy, mashed potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. It was Okay... Fried chicken fingers were salty and dry. Not recommended. This place has a wide selection of beers and it's nice to sit outside in the patio. Lots of tables outside. Another weekend in Saint John, hitting up places recommend by You Gotta Eat Here! For lunch I came to Saint John Ale House. It is connected to the Market, if it is cold out i recommend parking underground at the Market and walk in from the inside. I ordered the Maple Bacon Scallop and PEI Mussels! Both were amazing and fresh! Scallop are in season and they are full of flavour and super fresh. The bacon was delish (cant go wrong with bacon). The portion for Mussels was very big! i was not expecting it. The mussels are in a soup sauce which is a bit of spicy and have a flavourful aroma of garlic, parsley, celery, and onion. The fries are fresh cut and also have some good herbs. I was sad when all the mussels were done. I recommend this place, if i have another weekend here I would definitely come back. Food was pretty good and the restaurant itself was cool inside. Some major downsides included that at 7pm the interior was basically empty (not a good sign) and so so HOT! Sweating while inside eating a meal is far from pleasant. Ordered charcuterie and pork bites to start, and both myself and my partner had salmon for the main. Food was pretty good (nothing to rave about however). The server was not very personable and made the experience awkward on several occasions. She also rushed us and we were out in under an hour after drinks, apps, mains leaving us feeling a little sick due to the rushed eating which was odd as the restaurant was empty so no need to flip our table for the next guest. At the end of the meal she slammed down the card machine in front of my partner, and far away from myself when I had my wallet and card out and in hand. This created an awkward situation that was just totally unnecessary and weird. We left feeling very meh then noticed while walking away the next door restaurant had the exact...same...menu...the wording and presentation of dishes on the menu was also the exact same so obviously they share a kitchen making us question why we needed a reservation to attend this carbon copy restaurant that was empty. Great location and food. The spicy Mayo was so good I asked for Extra. It was perfect combo with the buttermilk chicken tenders.

Good place. Excellent service, good ambience. We sat in the upstairs restaurant. I loved the bacon wrapped scallops and my husband enjoyed the fish and chips with an unusual but delicious (tarragon?) tartar sauce. I also really enjoyed the beet goat cheese and walnut salad. Served with Arugula and just a hint of maple in the vinaigrette. It was a Sunday at 2:00 so the place was very quiet. One sour note was the dessert. It was a Pear pie of some kind. It was 4 slices of poached pear over a vanilla gelatin custard. The crust was the main fail here. It was reminiscent of cardboard - tough at the edge and soggy and undercooked in the middle. read more

Had a delightful dinner here on a very rainy October evening last night Very solid beer menu! So many options must have been between 40 - 50! I chose the Picaroons Blonde Ale which was masterfully delicious! Ambiance is like a high end steakhouse with low level lighting! I was going to try the Lobster roll, but thought to myself (I'm sure it's good but it was $40)!!!!!!! So I decided on a cup of the seafood chowder and the fish and chips. Seafood chowder came out in a coffee mug with a very nice side piece of dulse. The dulse I have never been served at a restaurant! It was amazing!!!!! Tasted like Nori seaweed but a little more sea flavour with light salt!!!! Really nice surprise! I asked my friendly server as there was a two fish piece option and she said "no you seriously only need one piece". Man was I glad as the fish and chips came out as one of the biggest fish and chips portions I've seen in my life! Fish was very light and crispy and perfectly moist on the inside! Looking at other tables beside me there were many people ordering the fish and chips! A great dining experience on a rainy St John evening! Nice place to eat. We sat outside on their deck, which overlooked St. John harbour, and beach volleyball courts. (They call it boardwalk volleyball.) There is local entertainment within eye/earshot most evenings in the summer, but we didn't stay for it. Food was outstanding. Service was even better. Our waiter was constantly attentive, and friendly. We shared an order of Poutine, (heart attack in a bowl). My wife and daughter both ordered the pub club, a chicken breast, bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and a sauce with a slight kick. Both enjoyed it. Spent the majority of Canada Day on the patio of the Ale house. Had the pleasure of being served by Leti and service was exceptional. The drinks were delightful and the food selections made my Leti were wonderful. She sets the bar high on service and will make it very hard for me to want to dine anywhere else when I'm in Saint John. Along with urban deli, this is the second best spot for professional diners in sleepy Saint John. I'm very used to the gastropub scene coming from San Francisco, where that concept is utterly played out, but it works here. Great New Brunswick beers, awesome fish & chips (the fish is super fresh and covered in a thick ale batter that is strictly for carboholics) and friendly service.
