They brought supplies and had meds delivered every time we needed. The nursing staff was so kind and took their time caring for my mother. Veronica bathed my mother so respectfully and lovingly. The chaplain Morales came several times and prayed over my mom. Also providing kind words and prayers for our family in our time of need. The staff at Unity called to check how we were doing often. We talked many times and they guided us so lovingly and kindly through this very difficult ordeal. They were amazing.

I tried Unity Hospice for my mom over a few volatile months in 2018 when she was diagnosed with…read morestage 4 congestive heart failure and fighting not only for her life but for ethical treatment by the horrific facility at which she resided. During this time period, I placed a babycam in her room, as there were a lot of people coming and going unaccompanied (nurses, bathers, equipment vendors, therapists, social workers, etc) and we wanted to ensure her safety at all times. I ended up switching to a different hospice company when mom moved from that facility to one in the Valley, due to the new facility's requirement. However, as soon as I knew we were moving mom back to LA proper, I called Unity to re-engage (even though my sister was vehemently against it). I spoke to the owner Eric who welcomed us back and advised us he would have one of his staff send me the necessary paperwork the following day. When the following day came and went with no paperwork received or contact from Unity whatsoever, I called three different Unity staff members, as mom was 48 hours away from the move, it was Friday and I didn't want her to be without care. Once again, Eric the owner called. He said he spoke to his staff and his doctors and nurses all felt uncomfortable caring for mom again because we had a babycam in her room at the unethical facility. This is an industry wherein many of these types of companies are in business only to collect the Medicare and provide bare minimums. I'm not sure what Unity has to hide that they would feel uncomfortable taking blood pressure, checking for edema, delivering supplies and listening to mom's lungs with a babycam in the room but this raised a major red flag for me. I will seek care elsewhere.

I was a first time donor at Huntington Hospital Blood Donor Center today :)…read more I was all set to donate my 89th pint to the American Red Cross (on Walnut in Pasadena) when the incompetency of their staff nearly cost people lives after they turned me down because they are unable to perform their jobs correctly. That's an entirely different updated review and email to them. Enter Huntington Hospital Donor Center :) I called them to see if they were open around 815A and accepting blood donors. They picked up right away and I was able to drive right over. I was so grateful and excited to come donate my first pint at the hospital I was born at. If you know me, you know I'm extremely passionate about saving lives through blood donation. I donate every 56 days and have for a good long time. I parked as directed in the East lot beside the ER and everything is clearly marked. You can't miss the center if you tried. I was immediately greeted, provided my ID, was given a mask, answered a quick 42 questions, was given a water and then taken to get started. I was in and out in no time. My blood pressure and iron were all in line with what they normally are. The miles of biking and running I do on a weekly basis produce a consistent BP that is lower than your average Joe. I've become clearly aware, that the Red Cross has been hiring people who aren't properly trained and up to speed when I receive all sorts of wacky readings. I'm usually right around 90/60 I'm never anywhere near 120/80 or much below 90/60. Last time Red Cross tried telling me my bp was too low 80/50 something... and today they tried telling me it was 126/80. In no world would these be my readings. I also eat 5 ounce bags of sautéed spinach several times weekly, cook with kale many times a week in addition to taking a daily iron supplement and ensuring I intake red meat the week of blood donations. Today the Red Cross tried telling me my hemoglobin level was 12.1(too low to donate) and then retested at 11.8 (lower after retesting) and I could not donate. Lo and behold at Huntington 15 minutes later it's 13.5 or 13.8 (I peeked over to check) and my BP was in line with what it usually is. I filled my bag in under 5 minutes, stayed the 15minutes you have to stay after and was even offered several gift cards (In N Out, Starbucks, and others OR a t-shirt). I couldn't believe they were giving out gift cards to donors. American Red Cross does not do this sort of thing and I confirmed it's on every visit. I was happy to have a t-shirt to help promote donating here but totally don't require a gift card, I'll save those for others. I'm not into helping others for a kickback, I enjoy giving back for zero profit. They really need a PR team, I'm more than willing to do it pro bono ;) I HIGHLY recommend donating blood here. It's the best experience I've had. Please pay it forward and make a little time in your day every 56 days to save some lives. Blood is always needed and with the hustle and bustle of the holidays, people tend to put it off. I'm asking you to please give back and encourage others who are able, to do the same. Huntington Blood Donor Center provided the perfect experience for a first time donor (to this location) and I have full confidence your experience will be nothing short of outstanding. On Sundays,…read morethere are literally dozens of places on campus to go to Mass; every dorm has its own chapel; there are more priests walking around in their black suits than you've seen since the early 1980s, and all the famous campus landmarks associated with football (Touchdown Jesus, Fair Catch Corby, First Down Moses) are actually pieces of religious art. Well, if Notre Dame is Catholic Disneyland, then Santa Teresita is Catholic Disneyland for old folks. No, there aren't dozens of chapels on its little campus, but you can't visit without seeing at least one or two Carmelite nuns in their traditional habits (all-white habits if they're doing medical work), and although I've only visited four or five times, I've met at least two different priests here, and I never came for Mass or any other religious service. The religious who work and volunteer here simply love spending time with the residents, and it shows. I know about Santa Teresita because my then 100-year-old great aunt moved in for a month when her full-time caregiver was on vacation. My very religious aunt loved the setting, the nuns and priests, and especially the staff members. She couldn't say enough about how well everyone treated her, and even though she was determined to live out her days in her own home, she admitted that Santa Teresita wouldn't be a bad place to be if she needed to live here. That might not sound like a glowing endorsement, but coming from my aunt, who never would have dreamed of leaving her house, it was an encouraging sign of openness. Not long after her 102nd birthday, my aunt's caregiver retired, and my aunt moved in to Santa Teresita permanently. This time, she had a room on the second floor, close to the elevator, and I visited her five or six times. My mom was largely in charge of finances and making sure she had everything she needed, and my aunt was always telling my mom to bring chocolates and other little things to give to the staff members and the nuns. My aunt really took to and loved the people who worked here, and when I met the employees and volunteers when I would come to pick her up or bring her back, I could tell they took their jobs seriously and truly enjoyed my aunt's company. The grounds are lovely. All the residents live in two cottages separated by a cute courtyard. I've only been inside the newer cottage, but they both look very nice from outside. If you toured my aunt's cottage while no one was there, you would have no idea that this is an old-age home. It feels more like a modern apartment complex with many large, inviting common areas. When we would bring my aunt back to Santa Teresita at night after some social event, there were always at least a few people in one of the main shared areas watching a movie on the TV. In addition to residents, staff members and priests would sometimes be there, but it felt totally natural, as if friends were just watching a movie together. I don't know many of the specifics, but I know that Santa Teresita offers various group activities for the residents, including field trips and on-site parties. At last year's Halloween party, my aunt won an award for having the best costume. Administratively, my mom dealt mostly with Sister Carmen, whom I only met once but who plays a big part in my whole family's estimation of Santa Teresita. She's a high-energy crackerjack marked by her deep commitment to her residents and making sure everything is running properly. My aunt's needs changed over the time she was at Santa Teresita, and Sister Carmen was always patient with and helpful to my mom in terms of assessing and changing levels of care. My aunt passed away peacefully in her sleep at Santa Teresita this past February. She was 102-years-old and had lived a full, enchanted kind of life. At her funeral, I got to meet Sister Carmen and some of the other employees and volunteers who cared for my aunt. She had left a deep impression on them, and despite the fact that the funeral was very far away from Duarte, a lot of people from Santa Teresita came to pay their respects. They also had a separate memorial service for my aunt at Santa Teresita. Rehabilitation and old-age homes can and often do feel so depressing. Nothing at Santa Teresita ever felt that way. From the setting itself to the employees and volunteers, there was always a sense of goodwill and companionship.

I spent a month there and got to know much of the staff from the cleaning staff to the hospital manager-they were all so accommodating and treated me as though I was their only patient.
