Everything was perfect. The staff was super attentive, the food was delicious, and the island itself is perfection.

I wouldn't recommend this place to a loved one suffering any mental health problems. This place may help those with addiction or ones that may cause harm to others or themselves but for those suffering with mental health problems such as depression, anxiety or insomnia this place is a nightmare. This place is worse than jail. They take everything away and lock it up including all your clothes. They have the cold AC blasting on you all day and make you sit in a room all day with nothing but short sleeved scrubs and don't provide any kind of jacket or let you have a blanket to keep warm. I couldn't keep my jacket I had on because it had pockets and they wouldn't provide any reason I couldn't have my bra or my socks when other people could. Make sure you have shoes because they do not provide them and there were several people that had to walk around barefoot. During the admin process after a 4 hour drive from the hospital they would not let me use the bathroom and made me pee myself. I was scared the whole time I was here to ask for anything because all of the staff will yell at you and get angry for everything including simply having to go to the bathroom. They have to check on you every 15 mins so you will have the nurse shine a flashlight in your eye to wake you up every 15 mins making it impossible to sleep here. I was here a week and talked to a doctor/therapist maybe once for mostly paperwork and the group therapy you go to with the other patients everyday is always run by the one patient that talks to much and doesn't let anyone else say anything. If the therapist actually let the other patients talk it would have maybe helped me and a lot of other people that are too shy or scared to say anything. I was fed 3 times a day though with ok food so that was the only good part I got from this place. read more

I was there maybe a few months ago, and it quite literally made me worse. I was told I was bipolar after talking to a psychiatrist for 30 minutes and while manic, and put on medication that didn't help me. The medication made me drowsy and depressed to the point. I couldn't even think about wanting to die. I went in because I'd tried to kill myself and I left so bored and drugged up that I couldn't even think of ways I wanted to kill myself. The nurses were especially rude, not caring to help me with my (at the time) recently stitched injury, and were slightly inappropriate at times. Like telling me that I should have children, after I'd explicitly explained that I didn't want to have children due to my trauma and my own mental state, because "Brown babies at the cutest". The therapist is also hardly ever in the actually building, she sat with me originally for 30 minutes and didn't ask me anything outside of the questions infront of her and didn't seem interested in actually helping me. The techs ranged from either very kind and supportive, which was one of the women Mrs. Nat, to rude and belittling which was almost of all them. The techs ranged, Tim, was one that stuck out because he was constantly on his phone and snapped at anyone who asked him anything. The nurses the first night I was there tried to refuse me a call home, claiming that it would be unfair of me to call since I'd already since my mom that day and because the fight before dinner ruined my chance to call home (for the record I was not involved in the fight and actually hadn't even been in the building when it happened), and then complained as I cried that I just needed to call home (I was hours away from home and had siblings that didn't know I was gone). The food was torturing, I remember that I only ate the first day and for the rest of my stay I only had water and juice because I was not about to throw up because that would only make my stay extend. They also would punish us children for the things the adults did. Like not going out in the yard or taking out our TVs. I also didn't get a curtain for my bathroom till my 5 day in (which was also my last) which left me and my roommate in a position that it was always using the restroom. Speaking of bathrooms, you could hardly use the bathrooms. The bathrooms in the actual rooms were small and only had curtains (if they remembered to give you one) and barely worked. My shower hurt to use and the sink was also leaky. There was only one bathroom on the floor that wasn't in your room (and you weren't allowed in your room except to sleep) and it was full because everyone else also had to use it. That's only half of everything that was just wrong, again the medication, the lack of therapy and support, and it was just borderline traumatic to be in SSBTS. I went to St Simons By the Sea 6 times in the year of 2020. And i have to say its definitely better than some of the other ones that i have been to. They are a lot less strict then say, coastal harbor, there food is mid, but i remember the lemonade being AMAZING. A shoutout to Coach, ifykyk, he's amazing. He told me things about myself that not even i knew. The therapists were horrible, they just want to fill you up with meds so they can say they "did there job". I got more therapy from the other patients than any of the techs or therapists. Another shoutout to Reese or as we called him Uncle Jesus (he looks like Jesus, or Aquaman, either or ) he was great. Some of the fights there were actually insane. One girl i was in there with got in a fight with another girl, she slammed the girl's head up against the floor like 10 times before a tech got to her. I liked the fact that we were allowed to play music while in the day room, and some of the activities were really good, like painting or animal therapy. The snacks before bedtime always hit the spot . And most techs dont really care what you do, one girl sucked off this dude in the day room. Do NOT BRING A LOVED ONE HERE for benzo detox. In short, my husband went in taking 1.5mg clonazepam. Day 1 they increased him to 2.0mg. Day 2 they continued to give, added Seroquel, he collapsed in front of the doctor. Not the doctor, not the attending nurse at the time, NO ONE called me to tell me. My husband told me the following day. At this time the attending nurse called me and said "we have a problem, that was not supposed to happen. We are now on Day 3, at this points the DOCTORS told me they didn't know what to do with him. That this was "weird" and I would have to solve going to a neurologist and gastroenterologist. HOW THE EFF was I going to do that with someone with CPTSD, full blown agoraphobia, and now even more extreme medical trauma? OH FORGOT, he hadn't slept in 4 days because every 15 minutes they shine a flashlight in your face to ensure you're not dead from all the drugs they have given you. At 72 hours of no sleep we go manic. I'm not a doctor and I know that. so now Day 4, since they "still couldn't figure it out" they decided to give him ANOTHER drug. This time Remeron. and btw still on Klonopin 2.0mg. Day 5 is when they decided he was to check out, with no sleep, a rollercoaster of drugs, and an even more sick man than when I came to SS for help. DO NOT bring your loved one to this facility unless you want them to be FULL of drugs. I've been sober for several years, and many of my friends in the community told me this place was "good but they keep you on a lot of drugs". Because my husband is not an addict, they told me they could help with the detox. NOPE just made it worse. Since this incident in January I have vastly educated myself on the tapering of Klonopin and no medical journal advises to put Someone from 1.5 to 2.0 back to 1.0mg in five days. It is actually something that should be done over months even years. read more

I was here for over a week after attempting suicide. I experienced neglect, emotional abuse, and threats by staff. Specifically the following Techs: Mrs. Jamica, Mrs. Latisha, Mrs, Cici, Mrs. T, and Mrs. Ykissa. They repeatedly screamed at us for minuscule things like talking in line, using markers, and "disrespect" when we merely expressed our opinions. They threatened to fight us (not including restraint) if someone had a meltdown and got violent. They repeatedly accused us of seeking attention and cussed at us. There were bugs and gnats in our food and water. I constantly had to check my wounds for bugs because the staff refused to dress them properly. I bathed in the sink with a rag and cold water because they did not give me proper dressing for my wounds. I did not get my clothes until my last day there despite my parents dropping them off the day of my arrival. I was in scrubs the entire time. My medicine was lost three times. They gave my medicine to another patient in an entirely different unit at one point. I talked to the therapist once, and the doctor twice in my stay. Do not send your children here. I had nightmares every night and was afraid to open my mouth. Staying there made me wish I had truly ended my life. Please read the reviews before you choose to send your child here. read more

This place was great. I loved the activities we did and the staff were great for the most part (special shout-out to coach k and nurse matthew). My only issue was one of the nurses (I forgot her name) was not treating my diabetes correctly and would not give me my insulin, causing me to go to 543 (my range is 90-180). This caused me to have a mental breakdown and I started screaming and cursing at her until they helped me. After this event the hospital said I was defiant towards authority figures in my reports even though I am not and that was a one time event, leading to a massive misdiagnosis that my therapist and psychologist disclaimed. Although I thought the place was great, I cannot give it more than 3 stars because of how much they screwed up with me. read more

I am giving this facility a three only because the staff is professional for the most part. Exceptional psychiatrist and therapists nursing staff excellent. Admissions staff were horrendous. Completely untrained, . I am a retired LCSw. They need to be trained. They place people in this facility based on insurance. I spent over 36 hours here but luckily I was discharged . it needs a complete overhaul and ur needs a overhaul as does admissions. I did report this to the head of the hospital. Groups good but need more individual therapy and honest communication among therapist and patients. It was at times like a prison. Not therapeutic but the staffs hands were tied. I thank the staff as they are extremely hard working. The head of this large facility needs to be informed as it was just taken over. Get rid of the old staff in ur and admissions.UHS should know better. Use Summit oaks as a learning hospital . Thanks, Dr. Meadors and staff you are awesome . Admissions, shame on some of you. Ur. Was no care. Signed myself in at $5000 a week. Spent two and half days no counseling. No Dr visits. Meals were like school lunches only worse. People were out of control. The overseers I am sure at one time had been patients.Was offered a Vicodin from a patient in the middle of the night. Most patients had been there before you could tell at break time(?) they all headed out to smoke. Brought a woman in my room first night and all they did was open the door and use a flashlight to see if she was alive I guess. So lacking in help there was a sweet gal who started following me around for comfort.She didn't talk. When family called I was not aware.When I had enough I was told Dr was not in and wouldn't be for three more days. They lied he was there.After I was finally allowed to leave they had stolen my personal grooming items.If I hadn't been so sick I would have sued . I did get a small portion of my $5000 back.Do not ever leave a family member where you are not welcome to visit.! read more

Overall, I say the experience was sub-par. There are very caring staff and nurses who try their hardest. The food is good and edible (try the lemonade, it's great) and while the restrictions can be annoying (no hardcover books and no pencils/pens for example), really they are just trying to keep you safe. There was a nurse who looked and was quite rude, but most of them tried their hardest and were quite nice. I spent my birthday here and the nurses tried to make it a good experience despite my current circumstances, which was nice and appreciative. I feel like I did not gain anything while there. I pretty much just tried to get my stay over with when I was there. While I was diagnosed with new mental illnesses and they helped me with my medications, they said I had a urinary infection. When in fact, I never had it in the first place. Also, the therapy did not help me at all. All we really learned was basic things about coping skills and self-esteem, and when we did have group therapy one girl would just keep talking, leaving nobody room to actually talk about their issues. I had a counselor to talk to when I was there but I never really remembered any of our sessions. I don't think we really talked about anything. read more

I like the lemonade. This place sucks tho. The tech is horrible. How am I supposed to live, laugh, love in these conditions?! I made great friends. They are better than the therapy. They woke me up at like 3am to take my precious blood :( Every time I tried to get answers (because I was confused) the staff would ignore me. i was here for six days dude there were only 2 enjoyable staff members for me well one was acceptable but the other one mrs paula i loved her. the food was mid and sometimes tasted funny but it was ok. there were a couple fights while i was there and the three times we went outside we were walled in by huge fences which was kinda weird but i understand the purpose of it. overall i dont recommend this place and if anything the patients help you more then most staff. they put you on meds just to put you on meds and we are very limited to what we can do which isnt much and the tech are super strict about their rules. i loved the patients there and im sorry to all the cameras that witnessed all of us flashing eachother and making out please dont check the cameras in the 700 hall please like ever just dont AND SOME LADY STOLE MY BLOOD AT THE ABSOLUTE BUTT CRACK OF DAWN and i wouldnt consider washing your clothes there bc they always get mixed up and youll get your clothes taken read more
