There's better sushi in Jacksonville (I'm looking at you Crazy Sushi, Yashi Sushi, Wasabi & Fuji on Roosevelt) but the clean interior, wooden floors -- and ceiling -- and glowing yellow lighting really add to the experience. My parents are walking distance to Sake, making it a regular stop for family dinners. The frequency of visits is mainly because it is just so easy for us though, not due to anything spectacular in the menu. The servers are never smiling but the sushi is decent. Food temperatures are always a little off (cold and hot sushi are room temperature, I'm not referring to health code risks- just taste). They have a happy hour beer special that we enjoy: buy 1, get 1. I wouldn't recommend it to someone looking for a fantastic sushi experience or a Jacksonville visitor. A front dining space leads to a spacious back room that has more tables along with an area of booths sunken into the floor (to eat at these means removing your shoes - awesome!), then an outdoor patio that overlooks Margaret Street. They have a comprehensive menu and fine service. The quality here is on par with Sushi Cafe down the street, it's just a matter of personal taste when deciding where to satisfy a sushi urge. My husband and I came here on Valentine's day for dinner and we were so pleased there was not a wait. The food was great and the service was good also. The only thing that prevented me from giving it all 5 stars is that I saw the check in special on Yelp for a free appetizer. I checked in, we ordered an appetizer, and when we got the check we were charged for it. I told the server about the Yelp deal and she told me I had to order the appetizer at the beginning. Decent prices.... but again nothing special. The ambiance was cozy and relaxing. The service....... was sketchy. Now, there was a language barrier..and it was hard to make out what the server was saying...then her help came out, but came off as really rude. Decent. If I was back in my native San Jose, CA or Los Angeles, CA, this place would be a 2-star. The rolls are reasonably fresh and tasty, but nothing to rave about. If someone asked for good sushi, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place, but I wouldn't be super excited about it either. The sashimi was clean, and it tasted pretty good, but I would have really preferred it to be served colder, or on a bed of ice. It's not amazing so don't expect something straight out of Tsukiji! It had a weird flavor in each roll and just didn't taste fresh. We also got the chicken Katsu. It was like a frozen breaded chicken breast. The hibachi vegetables and fried rice were alright, nothing special. We started with the dumplings and those were alright too. What a pleasant little surprise. This restaurant is on a side street and has a small front. But it's big on flavor inside. The service was excellent. I didn't want to eat a lot, so I got the Tuna Tataki (which was an extremely generous portion), Edamame, and a half portion of Softshell Crab rolls...very delicious. I keep coming back thinking my experience would change but it doesn't. I like giving establishments second chances or more before I can make my own solid opinion of the service. On one occasion, there was one server who was waiting on three tables. There was no communication to patrons that he was going to sit down and eat his own lunch when myself and another table were waiting for our checks; we were just left waiting on him. I'm ok with getting up myself and paying at the front desk, but there was no one there. I'm not sure with how much time went by when one of the patrons finally said, "we're just sitting here..." --the server finally wiped his mouth, stood up, and gave us all of our checks. On another occasion, I was greeted kindly by one of the servers but she stayed in front of the kiosk and didn't take any of our orders or acknowledge my group when we sat down. It didn't look busy and the chefs looked bored. We were ready to order and she kept ignoring us when she passed us by two or three times. I realized that this server is also a patron at my establishment and she was also very rude to me when I was her server. I'm probably not going to come back. If you decide to go to this sushi house, keep in mind that there are two more sushi restaurants in walking distance when you're getting shitty service here. read more

I'm really surprised by the other reviews of this place as I can't imagine anyone thinking this is great sushi. It's not terrible...just slightly below average. Now I think it is important to consider the reviewers past experience with sushi and I will say that I've spent most of my life eating sushi on the West coast. I guess if you've mostly had sushi in Jacksonville, this place might rate higher than below average (probably more like 3.5 stars for the Jacksonville area). For what it is worth, here's my opinion of the place. Pros: -good atmosphere -reasonable prices -some outdoor seating -located in great, walkable neighborhood Cons: -few roll options involving raw sushi -rolls appeared to be haphazardly prepared (i.e., rolls weren't rolled tightly and fell apart easily). -my rolls (Tokyo, Crazy Tuna & House roll) were somewhat bland and didn't taste like they were made with fresh seafood (more like several days old, frozen and thawed) -the waitress came to our table to deliver our menus while speaking on a cell phone. I'm sure not all their staff do things like this, but I thought it was unprofessional. Bottom line: if you have to eat sushi in Jacksonville, this place is about average and you could probably do a little better going someplace else. If you are just in town visiting, skip sushi altogether and get some BBQ. read more
