Immediately after being seated the waitress came to take our drink orders, so we didn't have to wait. When she returned with my water and hot green tea, she took our food order, so overall, the wait time was great. However, when our food came out, my friend was missing one of his dishes. The waitress forgot to write it down and put it in. I know he told her because I made a comment about the dish after he gave her his order. The salad was fresh and the ginger dressing was not over bearing so that was a plus, but both of our miso soup was lukewarm. Nothing really came out hot and probably because they didn't bring our food to the table immediately. After they brought my food out I sat there waiting for his food to come out. He told me to go ahead and start eating but I didn't feel comfortable eating while he was just sitting there watching me. When I asked the waitress about his food, she said, oh it's right here and grabbed it from under the food warmer. I saw it sitting there but I wasn't sure if it was someone else's plate. Decent Sushi, Decent Prices! We went here on a Monday night so it was not busy and we were seated immediately. We ordered a few rolls for the table and got: shrimp tempura roll, California roll, rainbow roll, rock n roll, Jaguar, dynamite for 5 people. I love that they have deep fried/tempura fried rolls at lower prices $7-8 because at other places, they usually only do this for special rolls that are at least $10. They also give you free miso soup with your order. As far as the taste it was above average but not the best sushi I've had. Our favorites were jaguar and rock n roll! They served all the rolls on a large plate with a big hunk of wasabi and ginger which was great for our table of wasabi and ginger lovers. They also have shrimp sauce on the table to use. In a town with dozens and dozens of options for sushi, we are pretty picky when it comes to where we choose to pick up our chopsticks. We stopped in to Sake House before catching a movie at Sun-Ray for a date night, and ended up being really glad that we did. The atmosphere is low-key and leans more toward the traditional side than the modern when it comes to decor. The service was fantastic from the time we walked through the door; our waitress was patient with us and gave plenty of recommendations for sake, appetizers and rolls. We started with the beef tataki; with fresh, very thinly sliced slivers of beef in a light, sweet teriyaki sauce. Then came the tower of rolls; we had trouble deciding between all the great options and were pretty hungry so we ended up ordering four. Our choices were the Jimmy Smith, the Red Dragon, the Godzilla and the Manhattan roll. If you're a sushi purist and don't like a lot of toppings or sauces on your sushi, this is not best option. However, we enjoyed the rolls and didn't think they were too "overdressed" as you could still taste the freshness of the fish and additional ingredients. The prices were very reasonable ($8-$10 a roll) and the rolls were pretty large and not skimping on any ingredients. We'll definitely be back the next time we are in Five Points. read more

The food is fine. I eat there during lunch quite a bit and it's fast and consistent. My only issue with this place is that they have absolutely ZERO enthusiasm with customers. They don't welcome you in or ask how you're doing. They never check to see how your food is after they bring it out. Very minimal customer interaction. I don't expect to have a full conversation but a smile and a check to see if everything is okay would be nice. I'm not going to pretend I'm any expert at sushi but I've tried others sushi places in Jacksonville and I just keep coming back to Sake House. The atmosphere is nice and relaxing, and they recently updated the seating area in the sushi bar room so it's even cozier than before. Their specialty rolls are amazing and i'm a big fan of the annie and crunch roll which are on the cheaper side but still delicious. Not sure about the habachi. Had a mediocre experience at Sake House. We ordered the Spicy Girl sushi roll and hibachi with shrimp and a side of miso soup. The quantity of food was good, but the quality not so much. My sushi roll was quite bland, although spicy tuna is usually very tasty. It was honestly hard to finish. The hibachi was better, but definitely too salty. After living in riverside for over a year, I finally made my way into sake house and I'm glad that I did. Within my first visit, I came back an additional two times if that tells you anything. I do want to point out though that my review is based on take out experiences only. Regarding the sushi, I found it to be delicious and taste very fresh. They also have a long list of special rolls if you're into them like I am. The price was a little more than I am used to paying, but honestly I don't mind. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I also noticed, which is very neat, is that they have a separate section where you can sit on the floor to enjoy you're meal when dining in. Very authentic (I think?). The staff is super sweet and very quick to serve you once you walk in the door. I suggest the spicy tuna roll or the riverside roll if you're feeling froggie. Worst customer service in any sushi restaurant in jacksonville. Yesterday I got cold soup and took like 30 minutes to get a small order with barely anyone there. Today I thought I'd give it another try and was sitting 45 minutes and never got food. People came in after us got there food and finished and we still got nothing! 2nd time going. Sushi is good. Customer service is HORRIBLE. The waiters act like they can barely speak or it's exhausting to do so. No smile, no attentiveness. Waiters don't communicate with each other. We had one come up and take the order. Then another came later to take our order. We told him the other guy took our food order. This one took our drink order. I signed in with Yelp and got a free appetizer. When I asked for from the first guy he seemed kinda annoyed. He took my phone processed it and said he would bring it. Then the sushi came and appetizer never did. They don't check on you unless to ask if you're ready to pay. I had to remind them that I was waiting for my free appetizer twice. Then all of a sudden they brought one and as we are eating one the other waiter brought one .. again, do they not communicate about what they're doing? It's not that big of a place. Solid sushi spot in town. The service is usually hit or miss, but the food is good. I usually order a role and side if fried rice here. There sushi rolls are always tasty and have a decent sake selection. I would encourage anyone to try to hot sake it is a nice change and unique taste. Perfect place to end a late night. The restraunts has a nice relaxing layout. With a shoeless traditional area (not exactly sure what it's called). 5 Stars because it is reasonably priced. We measure sushi restaurants by their Dragon Roll. This one is very good. My only suggestion if you are reading this Sake House is to put a little more creativity into it. It should be shaped like a dragon, not eight pieces neatly packed together. We had the Steak Hibachi also and it was well done and attractively presented. Two large beers, Dragon roll, Two steak dinners +tip $60. I'm happy. There are options to sit inside or outside which is very nice. The Sake staff is nice and also prompt. The food always tastes fresh and delicious. I would try the summer roll if you like something salty and sweet and the jalapeño Kani as a spicy appetizer. You can't go wrong with Sake house! read more

In reality I'd go 4.5 stars if I could, but I have no complaints about my visit at Sake House. Tasty well done sushi, good variety of rolls to choose from, attentive & friendly service, clean and pleasant atmosphere, priced similar to other sushi places. My bonus was that their menu was extra detailed, clearly lasting out all ingredients in a roll, whether inside or on top, and special symbols denoting if it was an all raw or deep fried roll, whereas some sushi places leave more mystery that makes me question my choices. All of our sushi rolls were well made, pretty tightly rolled, all ingredients in every piece and visually appealing. Free soup delivered to table. Free pop refills. What more can I say? We did go just after 5pm so it wasn't busy, so can't comment on their service quality at peak times, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now. read more

They have nice lunch specials (11-2 I think). I usually come here because the bento boxes and sushi is always reliably good. It's nothing to call home about, but it's solid. One thing that is usually consistent is the service. Asian restaurants are notorious for mediocre service (as in not friendly but not unfriendly and passably attentive). Apparently the day my sister and I went for lunch was not one of those days. We were the first customers, the "server" glanced up as we stood by the door and continued sweeping. A minute goes by, another minutes ticks off, the third minute is getting super awkward. Still he methodically sweeps. We stand there looking to see if there's anyone else. After the 4th minute, I turn, about to tell my sister, let's go somewhere else when he strides up to us, unsmiling, and brusquely waves us to a booth. I wish I could say it gets better. After ignoring my order (he wanted to get back to sweeping I guess), we waved down another person and got it corrected. The sushi was fine but being treated badly always leaves a bad taste in your mouth that's hard to overcome. I wouldn't not go here (note the use of the double negative which means "go"), dining before was never terrible, just know what you're getting into before you walk in. Go 'cause you like sushi but don't expect a fine dining experience. read more

Sake House does not disappoint! I stopped here to meet some friends after leaving the Jags game Friday night. I was beyond starving and they had been seated for a while, so I immediately flagged our server down. I ordered a hot sake and a Dragon Roll, which is my go-to when I'm too hungry to think about it! It arrived within ten minutes looking delish; nice and crunchy with cool, green avocado on top. I don't remember much after that except feeling warm and fuzzy as I popped scrumptious pieces in my mouth and sipped sake. Yum! Our server was pleasant and efficient throughout the meal, and the atmosphere was cool with the option to sit in in-floor, wooden booths. Sake House, this location, is the first Sushi place in Jacksonville that I truly really enjoyed. Jacksonville isn't know for their sushi, oddly since they are such a coastal town, but this place knows how to do sushi right. They have a nice atmosphere, I enjoy the seating areas with the drop seating on the wooden paneling and the outdoor seating is also nice. They have a nice selection of sakes and Japanese beers, as well as a pretty extensive menu. My favorite items are the Mexican roll [tomato, fried grouper, jalapenos... yum!] and the Dynamite roll [deep fried roll with salmon, crab and asparagus and spicy sauce], but pretty much anything you order is going to be tasty! If you feel adventurous, try the Salmon Roe appetizer. If you don't feel adventurous, the Gyoza and the Edamame are both delicious. And try the house sake. It's great! I have had a bad experience at the other location regarding an error in billing [got billed way more than I was supposed to, as in $175 more, and it took a few hours to correct], but the waitress was new and I will leave it at that. I came here with a friend after Hawker's was too packed, and glad I did. We both enjoyed some of their beers, as well as the hot and cold sake. All were very tasty. If you've never tried cold sake before, definitely do so, but make sure you get some of the better stuff. I can't remember exactly which cold sake we ended up with, as we ordered the Nagasake and, because they were out of it, tried to give us the Nagasake plum wine....ewwwww. When we told them there's no way we're drinking that, they substituted it for a nice cold sake. I had the Five Points roll and the Spicy Girls roll, neither of which were spicy. They were decent enough, but for the first time ever, I've had to resort to dipping them in soy/wasabi sauce to get some more flavor out of them. My buddy ordered a roll, as well as a bunch of sashimi (raw fish.) It was awesome! So much of it was tender, like butter, I could have eaten the whole thing. I'm glad to say I finally tried octopus, but I definitely didn't enjoy the texture of it. I was walking with a friend through the Five Points area of Riverside looking for some place interesting to go when we spotted The Sake House and detoured that way. I had not entertained the idea of sushi in a while, but as we entered the brightly lit dining room, I made a visual sweep of the sushi bar and its contents. It looked rather average in all capacities to me, so I kept on walking into the second dining room. It's important to me when I enter a restaurant to see who might be performing the magic on my potential plate. I think of it as adding an interview to the atmosphere that satisfies my mind and my culinary experience. As a reference, I believe sushi bars are particularly strong in the raw blend of artistic expression and scientific precision that a chef must display and that even the most benign thing on the menu, such as a "California Roll", should be both enticing and exciting with effort applied. There were some telling signs of what I was getting myself into when I saw #2 yellow pencils with check sheets on the table, next to the main selling point of the venue: the menu. Pencils mean that one can order a lot without seeing it, as if to provide a check list to the chef. It devalues the romance of ordering process to me. I like to gently push waitresses and sushi chefs (just a little) with the subtle hand gestures to imitating the creation of sushi. It tells them that I know what I am talking about, but it also conveys my passion to the process. When our orders arrived, I inspected the stunning array of sashimi of the "Deluxe" line that I had ordered. It's arrangement in a hierarchy of a salad mountain was interesting, but it wasn't emanating in Crayola-color. I could plainly make out the different fish varieties, but....the first taste did nothing for me and it did everything for me: it had been frozen. The next taste of something different was the same: no life to the fish, it had been frozen too. I went through the platter without improvement. While dissatisfied with what I had just gone through, my friend generously offered some of her plate of grilled meat and vegetables. It was overly salty, which raised another flag to me that the salt was covering up something, but i decided rather than dissect the food anymore, that it was time to go. As we left the Japanese styled venue, my friend reminded me that I might have been too harsh in my criticism of the place and that i couldn't compare here to some of the illustrious places i might have been in New York, Miami, or New Orleans. I disagreed as I know there are plenty of restaurants here in Jacksonville, FL that are performing a masterful work on every plate to earn their bread and butter as good as anywhere in the USA. My birthday was on 12/21 and my husband, friends, and family hosted a surprise party for me at Sake House. I've been before...love the food; however the service last night was the best I've had thanks in part to our server, Amanda. She did a great job of playing along with the surprise when she went to seat me. She even went as far as to record my reaction to the whole thing and send it to me afterwards. They were very patient with the large party we had and very accommodating. I already loved Sake House and love them all the more now. There's better sushi in Jacksonville (I'm looking at you Crazy Sushi, Yashi Sushi, Wasabi & Fuji on Roosevelt) but the clean interior, wooden floors -- and ceiling -- and glowing yellow lighting really add to the experience.
