This restaurant is in the neighbourhood so of course we have to give it a try. They have a decent menu with a good mix of the classics and special rolls. We ordered the udon (a nice light broth that really hit the spot), gyoza and some rolls. The sushi rice wasn't to my taste as it's quite bland.. I think it needs a lot more rice vinegar added. 'Sakeya Sushi' was a venue chosen for lunch recently - a first-time dining experience there for us. We arrived and parked in the lot near the restaurant a few minutes before its opening time of 11:30 am, and were its first, and only customers during our stay. Ambiance: walls, tables, et al, rather bare, but everything neatly arranged, and the place very clean. Some 'seasonal' music was playing, sounded a little loud at first, but blended in rather quickly with our conversation, and got lost in the background. Service: our server was friendly and cordial, and provided good table service throughout our stay. Food: names and contents of dishes listed as per menu. - Appetizers -- sunomono salads - ebi (prawn) for Mom, tako (octopus) for daughter and I -- korokke (potato croquette, 3 pcs) -- agedashi tofu. - Tempura -- prawn (7 pcs) - Part Tray 'C' (40 pcs) -- California roll (8 pcs), dynamite roll (6 pcs), BC roll (6 pcs), assorted sashimi (8 pcs) and nigiri (12 pcs) - w/garnishes - shredded diakon, green lettuce, lemon slices, wasabe, and pickled ginger. Dishes came from kitchen to table quickly (my initial "thoughts" - a little 'too' quickly perhaps?). Food presentations, adequate, but looked a little rushed. Except for the large Party Tray of rolls and such, nothing else really caught our attention -- the tray appeared to really be the only dish actually prepared with some real effort to "look good". A few additional garnishes, and minimal artistic touches, would have sure made food on the various small dishes look so much more appealing to the senses when brought to our table. Food preparations were 'ok' -- though no dishes were especially poorly-prepared, none were particularly well-prepared either. The kinds of dishes ordered here, were well-known from several dining experiences elsewhere -- these preparations lacked richness of flavour, and overall taste. Sakeya is a cheap spot for decent Westernized sushi. Nothing here will blow your mind, but it's all great value for your money. I paid around $35 for three people, and we were all full. While the sushi is decent, I would avoid the rice bowls. The chicken teriyaki was meh at best. All in all, I wouldn't go back unless I was in the area, wanted a quick cheap bite, and had a craving for sushi. 3/5. [Dishes] Chicken Teriyaki Don - Pretty meh. The meat wasn't tender, skin wasn't crisp, the sauce seemed slathered on as an afterthought. Wouldn't get this again. Negitoro - Decent, would get this again. Quality of the tuna isn't awesome, but that's to be expected for the price. California Roll with Real Crab - Wouldn't get this again, the real crab wasn't that much of a bump in quality. Spicy Tuna Roll - I'm a sucker for the flavour of spicy tuna at westernized sushi, and this did not disappoint. Could have been a tad spicier, but I was still a fan. [Service] Friendly and fast! Nothing much else to say here. [Value] This is why you should come to Sakeya. Great value for the amount of food you get. With this place though, it is definitely quantity over quality. read more

Average sushi house. A small restaurant with not alot of seating - maybe 6-7 tables. It was my first time ordering a ' vegetarian roll' in the Bento which had what tasted to be bean curd. They provided complementary miso soup per person which was a nice surprise ! The Bento was a reasonable size with a good variety of things. Interesting to see springs rolls as well as tempura. The teriyaki tofu was nicely fried and not greasy. The tempura was light and crispy. The sushi was all a good size and did not fall apart when being picked up. The overall ambiance of the restaurant was cozy though they did have a huge tv on one of the walls. A place for a quick, no frills meal. read more

I've been to like 30 different sushi joints of all price points in the vancouver area all of which were highly rated on yelp and no other place especially at this price point hit the spot consistenly like this place. I used to not care for California rolls at all because I thought of it as tacky and tasteless whenever i've tried it in the past. I used to only opt for sashimi; tuna belly, hamachi or wild sockeye salmon (none of which i've tried here) but my goodness this place's california rolls have me craving it every weekend. This place has quality control that's a cut above all those in the same price point. They understand the importance of serving the food at room temperature and how that dictates the food melting in your mouth or how it amplifies the flavour. Also if you're in a hurry you could order pickup from Skipthedishes which is pretty cool. Get the california rolls! read more

Was craving miso soup and sushi so my bestie and I went for dinner here as it was in the area. The food was amazing, the pace is very clean, the staff and very lovely and the price was very very reasonable. We both had a Bento Box which came with soup and tea. The portions are big! Give this place a pass. We got a bunch of dishes for take-out only to discover that there was no soya sauce in the bag. The waitress also answered a call when I was in front of her trying to pick up my order and took their full order while I was waiting to pay instead of asking the person on the phone to hold. To add to the disappointment, the dynamite roll is mostly filler. The spicy salmon/avocado roll is not saucy spicy goodness but tastes like tabasco. The rest of the rolls were below average and the only items we enjoyed were the agadashi tofu and yam roll. read more

Fiance and I live a block away from this sushi joint, we keep forgetting that it's there. We always order from Namoo. We finally ordered take out from this place. They seem to stick with the much more basic rolls. Nothing too fancy or different from other sushi joints in Vancouver. My fiance got the deluxe sushi combo, I ordered the Alaska Combo and two sea weed salads. Both the sushi combos come with miso soup. That's kind of different from what the other places offer you. Alaska rolls are typically california rolls with a piece of smoked salmon or salmon sashimi on top. Some places serve it with a tangy "dressing" on the top. Sakeya did theirs a little differently Instead of that tangy "dressing" on top they put a spicey sauce. I can't handle my spice, so i ended up giving it to my fiance. I just ended up eating the nigiri sushi. My fiance and I skimmed over the menu once more and it seems like they love their spicy rolls. Have been going here when the sushi craving hits as it's just a close 5 minute walk from my house. We have never been disappointed in the food or the service. Food is always freshly prepared and we are always quickly served and attended to no matter where we sit. Normally order dinner Bento boxes with chicken teriyaki, edamame and chicken karage. All of that is enough to feed 3 of us. Preferred the Bento boxes when they came with the gomae and sunomono salad. read more

Service was relatively quick starting with Tea and they kept up on the water. Miso soup was good. Assorted Sashimi great (Salmon, Sockey Salmon, Tuna, and Spicy Salmon, I'm sure it changes). Ordered the Alaska roll which was bomb. Could be one of my favorite rolls all time. Also the dragon roll which the wife loved. Ample eel and avocado on that one. I order in about 2-4 times per week. I've tried all the sushi places on skip the dishes and I think by far they have been superior than the others. Ordered again tonight and I think I'll be their customer from now on when I want sushi. They are open until 10 which is very nice because everyone else closes at 9. California roll - 3.5/5 (average, good) Dynamite Roll 3.5/5 (decent) yam tempura roll 4/5 (pretty good) spicy tuna roll 3.5/5 (decent - pretty spicy) miso soup 4.5/5 (really good flavour) veggie yakisoba 4/5 (good flavour, average amount of veggies, could add a bit more - 4 or 5 pieces of broccoli and a few slices of mushroom aside from shredded carrots). Overall this is a good sushi place to order from if you feel like take out, not sure we would go sit and eat there. Better than other sushi available in the area but definitely not the best sushi we've had. Would order from again. read more

Ignore those negative reviews! They should relax and just enjoy the food. If you want true authentic Japanese sushi, then you should go to Japan...but trust me, Japan has changed a lot. I was there last year! There was no California rolls in authentic Japanese food, no Dragon rolls, Dynamite rolls, BC rolls, Alaska rolls, etc... Most of all the sushi we eat these days are fusion, invented sushi! However, this place is clean and the service is great with decent food! They were very generous with the bonito flakes on takoyaki, and the nigiri pieces were large. The sushi rice was to my liking - not too hard or soft and slightly sweet. Usually I ain't that picky but this one was pretty bad. Was in one night and as soon as I walked in I had a bad feeling. Whole restaurant empty at 730pm. Order some food, while drinking the miso soup I could hear the microwave none stop working and I knew what I was getting. Everything from the rice or chicken and the deep fried shrimp and tempura was bad. I honestly had to say it was worst then the food court. read more

Two orders in a row I've ordered from here and have written extra soy sauce in two different places on the order, and both times I open it to see two packets in the bag (for four rolls) . First of all it boggles my mind how Sakeya Sushi has a lot of good reviews. Clearly all of those people don't know what good sushi/Japanese food is all about. Sakeya Sushi does it all wrong. The service seemed ok, but the food lacked authenticity and care. First off, the salmon tempura I ordered was not tempura batter. It was panko breading. This was very upsetting. Secondly, the gyoza dumplings were deep fried. It never stated this on their menu. Gyoza should be pan fried on one side. Thirdly, the chicken karage I ordered was not proper at all! It was deep fried chicken wings smothered in an unappetizing teriyaki sauce. First off, chicken karage is supposed to be boneless chicken thighs breaded to perfection. I couldn't even eat them. So I left them and paid the bill. The server didn't even bother to ask how things were and what the problem was. She just clearly wanted my money and for me to leave. That is the sign of someone who doesn't care for her guests. Do not dine here! It is very pricy for the crap you get. Unless you want to be angry and disappointed like I unfortunately am. read more
