Bento boxes in Japanese restaurants come in various shapes, sizes, and include such a wide-range of contents. Here's one the daughter and I tried and enjoyed at Mega Sushi back in late-November, that really provided a "wow" factor to our dining experience. Mega Sushi's -- 'Mega special bento box B' -- a first time experience for each of us. A large, colourful, variety of well-presented and prepared ingredients -- on the tray - selections of sushi, sashimi, tempura, rolls, salad, and condiments, and off the tray - miso soup, sunomono, and hot tea. A feast of flavours and tastes we sure enjoyed. Daughter and I each had this box, but found out from the experience, that we could have ordered the one box, and shared. But absolutely no regrets, I had some wonderful leftovers come home with me, and sure enjoyed the additional tastes later. From this, and past experiences, I can truly say, Mega Sushi really prepares some tasty bento boxes. If/when not in the mood to order a selection of separate items off the menu, they provide the way to a colourful, well-presented and prepared, tasty meal. I really love Mega Sushi. The food is tasty and reasonably-priced, the service is great, quick on wait times and they follow instructions well. Out of the countless times we've been here because my kids love it, they've only mistaken one instruction once, and when the youngest cried (although we're like, "We don't cry about food!!"), the kitchen staff remade his order ever so promptly. We've brought extended family here and they've enjoyed it too. We usually order: Beef/chicken teriyaki rolls Caterpillar/spider rolls Beef teriyaki don Beef yakisoba Salmon avocado rolls Yam tempura While some people may complain about authenticity (the staff is actually Korean) or fish freshness (I dunno, it's fine) or that there are few Asians who eat here (the takeout/food delivery side is bustling!), Mega Sushi is really everything I need in a restaurant that serves Japanese food. I stopped my Mega Sushi on my way home from the dog park to get some lunch, as it was conveniently located in a small shopping plaza. They have a simple menu, very reasonable prices, and the service was great - they even let me order inside with my dog (in her enclosed travel kennel) as it was hot so I could not leave her in the car. In addition to being very kind, even with a packed house my order was fast and FRESH and delicious. I highly recommend the sockeye salmon sashimi, especially being an Albertan, as it is a treat we don't see on the menu at home often. read more

Went to Mega Sushi on a Sunday for lunch with family. They all had been here several times before and told me they're not gonna order any raw fishes here, just their bento. Cousin said it was because the last time he was here he got a tiny bone in sashimi, but their miso soup and tempura are okay. Since it's my first time I decided to try my favorite (salmon, tuna) anyway so I ordered the California Combo. I'm quite disappointed because it's my first time having Japanese food in Canada in 3+ years. I've always remembered how fresh and tasty their raw fishes are... but I didn't have this same thought this time. Cali roll : A lot of crab meat. Rice are way too sticky. They're different sizes/thickness. Salmon sushi : Very thin cut. Not the best taste but acceptable. Tuna sushi : Very thin cut as well. Noticed the color is off once it's shown in front of me! Tasteless! :( Ebi (shrimp) sushi : Not a big fan of shrimp anyways so it's all right. Their wasabi is strong and spicy which I loved! I believe the Korean lady / boss lady served us - she's lovely and sweet :) Will I come back again? They said it was too hard to put into small containers, even though there were stacks and sticks of containers with soy sauce in them, six feet away. This sushi restaurant is on Austin Ave in Coquitlam. There is no other Japanese restaurants that are competing with them yet, so this is Mega Sushi's advantage. The restaurant itself is small with limited tables and chairs, so customers might have to wait for a table. It is running by Korean. Their servers are professional, friendly and efficient. They knew that the restaurant was small and had to do everything quickly, so the turnover of each table could be quicker and they could do more businesses. We ordered four dishes - two pieces of ikura sushi, Austin roll (cut into five pieces), spicy chopped scallop roll and a full order of half tuna (4 pieces) and half salmon (4 pieces) sashimi. The only thing that I did not like was that the each piece of the Austin roll was very big. When I was having a first bite, I could not separate the seaweed of the piece. The restaurant was not using good seaweed. The seaweed was very chewy. Other than the chewy seafood, everything tasted good. The sauce of the roll made the sushi tasted better. Their pricing was reasonable and the portion of the sushi was a decent size. We would definitely like to go back for Japanese food/sushi next time. read more

Location: The restaurant is located in a the corner beside a Mexican restaurant. My friends and I went there at 8pm. The place was fully filled both inside and out. Highly recommended to make rsvp in advance. They were fairly accommodating. We moved back the time at least twice and they were still okay with it. Food: We ordered mainly special rolls and some sashimi. The Big Boss roll and spicy bomb roll was really good. Toro sashimi taste amazing. The best sushi restaurant in Coquitlam, MAYBE MAYBE. Definitely my favorite as of last night, ,I was incredibly surprised by my take out order. This is a small, not-so hole-in-the-wall restaurant (Coquitlam isn't a cheap area). I have eaten sushi at tons and tons of different restaurants around the greater Vancouver area and with certainty I can say that Mega Sushi easily has the best Agedashi Tofu I've ever had, hands down. Whatever their cooking method is, our take out order tasted amazing. Their specialty rolls were moderately pricey ($7-$10 range) and customers are given an option to change their rolls to black rice for an extra $1cdn which is really cool. Despite what the prices of the speciality rolls might look like, I would encourage anyone to go for it. They have funky names and combinations of ingredients and are 100% definitely worth it. A lot of time, flavour and expertise put into their rolling-Nothing fell apart! Fish tasted fresh also have to mention as well, they threw in several edamame beans free of charge. Why can't all sushi places have an Awesome Roll like Mega Sushi? Aptly name, this one has a bit of everything. Smoked salmon, prawn tempura, crab, cream cheese and a healthy sprinkling of masago. I've been coming to this place for years, but now need to support a different local sushi joint. We ordered take out tonight at 6:00 pm, and we're told our order would be ready for pick up in 45 minutes. When we arrived to get our sushi at 6:45 there were a ton of people waiting in the parking lot for their orders. We paid for our order and were told it would be a few minutes. It's Sunday night, and Mother's Day, so a few minutes, was not an issue and understandable. Ok, we waited, waited and waited. we were patient at first. Then we checked in, to see where our order was. We checked in on two occasions and were told we are next. We finally got our order at 8:07! OMG, two hours after we ordered it, and one 1 hour 22 minutes after they said it would be ready. I don't care how busy they get, this is never acceptable! Had they told us, when we arrived to pick up our order that it would be over an hour. We would have cancelled our order and made other arrangements. Who wants to sit in a parking lot for an hour and 22 minutes, especially when you live within minutes of the place, and are told repeatedly it will be a few minutes. Ironically this isn't the first time this has happened to us here, so they are clearly not learning from their mistakes. I will never return to Mega sushi again, and I hope everyone they screwed over tonight doesn't either. They don't seem to be able to learn from their shortcomings. read more

I have to mention a few items from the menu that recently tried and I crave once in a while. There are 2 items that are not in the menu but I had the chance to try because the chefs sent a sample to my table and oh man! They are sooo good!. The first to mention is the "finger roll"!!! Yum! It is a deep fried crab/avocado maki with 2 sweet sauces on top that are to die for. A must try! They also have the "croquettes" which are not always available (just ask the waitress). It is a little heaven of yuminess! I am still not sure of what's in there but I remember tasting pumpkin, yam, veggies?. Really enjoy this spot for both dine in and takeout. My favourites are the mega bento boxes, the creative specialty rolls and the spicy agedashi tofu. My kids love to go too and the booths are nice and cosy spots. The wait staff is always helpful and the chefs greet you as you come in. When the restaurant was closed for a few months a while back I practically went through withdrawl. I heavily recommend the nigiri sushi, especially the Toro which is very fresh and tasty. If you're looking for fresh sashimi or great tasting rolls, I can't hesitate to recommend mega sushi. This place is a staple for my family and I. While there are other more famous sushi restaurants in our neighbourhood like Sushi Town and Sushi California, we continuously come back to this little joint because the freshness and quality supersedes that of other establishments. My favourite items to order here include their salmon sashimi and yakisoba. Their salmon sashimi seems to be fresher than other places. It also isn't too thick like other places. Personally, I prefer my salmon sashimi to be thin enough to actually taste the flavours without being overwhelmed by the size in my mouth and their salmon sashimi fits the bill. And their yakisoba is never overloaded with bean sprouts like other places so the taste is balanced between noodle, vegetable, and sauce. The service here is always fast, friendly, and efficient.
