I've been getting my hairs cut here for the past year or so. When I made my first appointment, I asked for someone who could specifically work with thick, short hair. I practically begged them not to just put me with the next stylist in rotation. The receptionist thought on it for a few seconds and decided on Amy. Amy has been hella receptive to my visions since day one. She's open to my new ideas and executes them almost perfectly. As long as I remind her to keep my bangs long, I've left a happy gal. A haircut with Amy is $45. I've never been one to spend that much on a cut, but I'm always excited with my hair when I leave, and that to me is worth the money. I've never had a $15 haircut that made me feel as confident as the ones I get from Amy. The studio space is open and bright with about ten hair stations, with nail and makeup areas as well. Sakora offers Aveda services such as massage, facials, pedicures and waxing and a full line of Aveda products. The only way Sakora could be better would be for appointments to be on time. Sometimes I've waited forty-five minutes for my appointment, where I'm awkwardly sitting around. Normally Amy is on time +/- 10 minutes, but I can't stand waiting much longer than that. I am deeply upset with how I was spoken to when I arrived to the salon. Yes, I was late, however to be extremely upset with me even after I called the salon before my arrival was not okay. When I came in the front desk woman Debbie was incredibly gracious and welcoming to me. The stylist who had me as their client was visibly upset and standoffish with me. She did not even give me her name, however I did notice that she was one of the younger stylists in the salon. The stylist put a towel and barber cape on me and I told her what I was thinking about doing and her responses were "you have so much hair, this is going to take so long. I don't know what you want". And stormed off from me to go look at her phone or talk to someone. I noticed that she was walking around the salon a few times and was looking at her phone. The stylist made me feel completely unwelcome and was not friendly at all with me. A visit to a salon is supposed to make people feel good, I wanted to feel good. This visit made me feel worse about myself even though it was something I was looking forward to. I was sitting in the chair feeling awful and I even asked the stylist if she wanted me to leave and she just brushed it off. When the stylist left to get a swatch book for me to look at I ended up getting up from the chair and went to the front desk. I requested my coat from Debbie at the front desk who tried to get me to say what happened and what she could do to smooth over the situation, which was really nice of her. I told Debbie I just wanted my jacket and left due to how the stylist made me feel. I am disappointed with my experience at this salon. I moved from a completely different state and was hoping to find a new stylist to work with at this salon. Every visit I have had to a salon I have always talked through what I am looking for, I am very easy to work with when it comes to discussing what I want to do and making it a reality with the help of a stylist. This situation at Sakora did not allow me the opportunity to talk through what I wanted to do. I tip really well for the services I get and I am someone who goes to the salon every eight weeks. I will be looking for a different salon and if anyone asks me if Sakora is a good salon I will tell them to stay far away. read more

I was in dire need of a pedicure and was calling around to places near where I work. Dakota came up on Yelp and while they didn't have any options that day, they offered times for the next day so I made an appointment. The outside of the building is very nice: no peeling paint or weeds along the sidewalk, nice colors and access from front and rear of building. I was instructed to check in at the front counter and while walking through the salon I noticed all kinds of service going on: hair styling, color, private room for waxing and up front all sorts of products to help you maintain your style at home. My check in was swift and I was escorted to the pedicure room through some open drapery which revealed 2 spots to sit. There's no massage chairs but a tiled seat with many cushions for comfort. I was offered a beverage and they had everything: water, coffee, tea, sodas, even wine! I just had water, because I knew wine would go straight to my head on empty stomach after work. My pedi gal brought me my ice water in an actual glass! Which was nice. She closed the drapes for a personal, relaxing experience while easy conversation was had. Very skilled and gentle, no painful moments at all. Decor and ambiance upscale but affordable. I'm doing this review after some time has passed so I can't recall prices. But if you and your BFF want some quality time together and a great pedicure, Sakora is the place! Check it out! read more

I LOVE this place... I mean LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! Everyone that works there is not related but it seems like a family. Sometimes in places where it's mostly women things can get catty but they all seem to get along really well. This full service salon and day spa caters to men, women, and children. Its mostly by appointment but they seem to take walkins if any of them aren't busy. They do nails, hair cuts and styling, massages, makeup, and are experts in healthy color treatments. They offer full wedding packages. The works for brides and grooms and their bridal parties. They also do on site wedding day hair and make up. You'll walk into an always spotless waiting area, warmly greeted, they take your coat, and offer you water, coffee, or wine. They use only Aveda products which are top notch and you can buy any of the products as well. I've been coming her for almost 10 years and will come for 10 more. Have been coming here to get my haircut by Melanie for over 3 years now. I'm the type that is always changing my hairstyle and wanting to do different things. I have always been happy with my results all the way from pixie cut to asymmetrical bob with an undercut now! I get constant compliments on my hair. Someone actually asked me if I was a hairdresser....that's kind of a big deal because I'm not! I also get my hair colored here too. Melanie always makes sure the color is perfect and if not she fixes it to our liking. I have had my hair done by a couple of the other ladies too, and they do an excellent job as well. If you're looking for somewhere to get an affordable cut, this probably isn't for you. However, I definitely feel like you get what you pay for and Sakora has never let me down! read more

Well, despite previous reviews, I have to say that I had a wonderful experience here. I love the fact that they use only Aveda products. I made an appointment with Malena (who I would recommend to anyone, by the way) to have my hair cut, colored, and highlighted. This was my first time at this salon, and was a little bit nervous about the radical change I was making, but she not only reassured me that it would look great, but she was just as excited about it as I was. She was super friendly and informative (by nature I ask a ton of questions lol) and professional. The rest of the staff was equally as friendly, though I didn't get the pleasure of having a conversation with all of them. The receptionist is awesome though, she helped me shop the products after Malena was done with my hair :) Overall, I'll definitely be back, and visiting Ms Malena. Need color? Get Malena. I do hope that everyone looking into going here will disregard the older reviews. My husband and I came in for trims. He has a pompadour style haircut and she butchered the sides. Now he has to wear a hat until it grows out. I requested a simple bang trim. Well, my bangs were 4 different lengths after she was finished. Neither of us could tell exactly how bad our haircuts were until we came home and washed and blow dried our hair. I was in utter disbelief. I expect more from an Aveda salon. Also when paying I said I would have to tip her next time (did not realize our hair was a mess yet) and the girl at the counter gave me the dirtiest of looks. So my husband left a tip. I grew up on the $5 haircut from Superior Cut, and graduated to Fantastic Sams when I became an adult. I hated going so much that I'd often put it off for two months past when I really needed a cut. And when I finally did go in, I'd either hate or tolerate (at best) what I was left with. This all changed when my wife suggested I check out Sakora. I've been getting my hair done with Ricci for a while now, and she's obviously got some experience with men's hair. She takes her time, which was so refreshing compared to the six minute rush haircut I was used to. She does a great job of making sure lines are clean and even and lengths are uniform. I also love the shoulder and neck massage along with the hair wash! Very relaxing. On top of it all, she's engaging and interesting, so it's not just thirty minutes of silence while sitting in the chair. Making an appointment has always been a breeze, and they seem to be very accommodating when I need to call and reschedule. read more

Before I moved to California I grew up Downriver. I spent my post-HS-football game weekend nights split between the Friendly's on West Road in Trenton and the Denny's on Fort St in Riverview. I made out in cramped American cars in Elizabeth Park and the graveyard on Grosse Ile, I hung out for hours in the coffee shops in downtown Wyandotte. I'm a second generation Downriver rat and I'm not ashamed to admit it! Of course now that I live in San Francisco, I don't get to say that to many people who appreciate the smirk that follows that statement. Or the midwestern work ethic that runs along that river south of Detroit. After six years in California, my tastes run more toward a fine Napa red and Swedish massage than an afternoon drive along the Detroit river or a quick trip across the border for a Tim Horten doughnut after dark. But sometimes a girl's gotta go back home and enjoy a spa day with her mom. Last time I was in the midwest, my mother and I opted for the "3 services for $99" deal available on Sakora's website. While we weren't able to fit in all three services (the nail tech was overbooked) my mom and I both had a mini-facial (with very relaxing aromatherapy, although not quite deep enough to be consider a 'real' facial) and full body massage (VERY professional and quite frankly one of the better massages I've had - and I've gotten a LOT in my time). They even offered to rebook our nail appointments for later in the week (I had to skip cause I was too tightly scheduled that week!). The services were great (and with high quality Aveda products), the prices were very affordable and everyone we interacted with was super attentive. I'd recommend Sakora to anyone downriver who is looking for a bit of pampering -- check it out if you're in town and looking for a quickie way to unwind while visiting your roots! read more

update: i went back to Ashley again and it's official. I'm never going to anyone else. I came here to get my bangs trimmed and decided to get my hair done a few weeks later. My stylist was Ashley. She did a phenomenal job! So many times when I want my blonde lightened and more of a beige tone, it always comes out looking the same. Not this time. She created this beautiful shade and I love it so much. It's not yellow. It's not boring. It's exactly what I wanted, and I rarely get that anywhere. Thank you Ashley! Great Aveda salon. I've gone twice and seen Amy both times. Not only is she professional and super sweet but she does a great job on my hair. I always get exactly what I ask for. A bit on the expensive side ($42 for a cut and style) but you get what you pay for. It's worth every penny for me! I've heard great things about most of the stylists that work there. I first came here on a referral from a close friend. I went to get my hair dyed "ombre" which can be tricky for a colorist I imagine. I got an appt with the same woman my friend got her hair dyed ombre with so I was confident she would be able to blend colors well. I warned her my hair pulled red tints when bleached. She fully understood and proceeded on. She was extremely friendly the entire visit and when it was time to wash the beach off I had full trust it would come out gorgeous. Unfortunately as soon as I got to the mirror after the wash, my hair was orange! She tried to make me feel better by saying it will look different once it's dried. Well, it didn't. I had no choice but to come back and get it bleached some more. The next available appt was 2 days later, which I was not happy about. 2 days later, she corrected the color beautifully but my hair was completely dry and brittle. She wasn't very friendly that visit either. And seemed very irritated I didn't tip her again. The next time I went, I asked for someone else. I've had no issues with her and will continue to go back again. I have family and friends that go here so I know they are a great salon. It could've just been a bad day for the first girl I saw I guess. read more

I've been here for a haircut maybe three times in the past, basically there isn't much else in the way of choice in the area, but we were out that way and I needed a haircut. I will not be returning due to the haircut I received this past weekend. It's not like I was ever really happy going here but the various stylists would do a passable job. To make it brief, I paid to have some idiot butcher my hair. The cut I get isn't anything difficult but if you can't listen to what the client wants or don't have the simple skills to pull it off than let someone else cut the persons hair. Now I get to do what the idiot stylist should have done and get someone else to fix my hair that is actually professional. I could pay a drunk person with gardening equipment to do a better job. Unless time travel gets invented soon and I want to go back to the 80's and fit right in then I won't be going back to this place. And as a side note why do the people that work there all look like they crashed into an Avon truck?? Is it just a downriver thing to wear all the makeup you own at once? read more

I really liked my experiences with Sakora. I'm a no fuss girl that does't like to book ahead of time when it comes to hair trims/treatments. I had a couple of terrible experiences at other places making day-of appointments, but not here at Sakora! The staff is warm and welcoming, they offer to take your coat right away and offer you a beverage. its the ONLY place i have ever gone to that gives you a shoulder/neck massage quickie after your shampoo. A little extra pampering like that makes all the difference in the world to me, and I'll be returning time and time again. read more

Yay, I went back today and scheduled a $25 haircut with Bethany and I love it. She didn't cut it too short and it's perfectly thinned out and layered just like I like it. She was really cool too and we dished the dirt on guys and other girl talk. She styled and straightened my hair really cute and recommended some cheaper products, since I'm on a tight budget. I would definitely recommend Bethany if you're going to Sakora to get your hair done...She's fabulous! read more

This is a nice place. The staff was nice and and knew their trade. When I walked in they offered to hang up my coat and offered a drink. I thought that was nice. My hair stylist took me back. I asked not to wash my hair. I am allergic to heavy perfumes and have a difficult time with many products. She offered me some kind of neck massage but I declined. I really just wanted a quick easy hair cut. Straight across bob. No bangs, no deep conditioning, layering or color. I only give this salon 3 stars though because of the pricing. The web site said prices for cuts started at $20. Since I got an absolute basic cut I thought I would be pretty close to that. But I was charged $55. So it is a nice hair salon but just inquire exactly how much your service will be before you start. read more

After reading some of the negative reviews I felt compelled to sign up with Yelp so I could write a review of my own. I found Sakora salon in May of 2008 and initially went in for a leg waxing, found the experience so great that I then went in for a mani-pedi the day before I left for Hawaii. I admit I wasn't a huge fan of the girl who did my manicure but Lisa did my pedicure and we've been together ever since. She is great with my hair and so very patient with me as I don't like to schedule my appointments in advance and often call with an immediate need to get my hair cut and colored. But then this review isn't about me it's about Sakora Salon. I have never once experienced rudeness or "stuck up" staff. They all seem to bend over backwards to make clients feel comfortable and welcomed. The staff is great and their prices are fantastic for an Aveda concept salon. If you are looking for a salon and spa to have a longterm relationship with I highly recommend Sakora. read more

My service at Sakora sucked badly. I was given the 3 for $99 (mini facial, upgraded 1 hour massage and pedicure) as a gift certificate for my birthday from my boyfriend. When I arrived I was told that the esthetician didn't even work that day. My facial was what I was most looking forward to since I'd never had one before. My massage was ok. Just ok. They were all told several times by my boyfriend that they were to treat me like a queen but I was left to wander around the salon aimlessly to try to figure out where to go after my massage was finished. Every massage therapist I've ever gone to has told me to drink lots of water after a massage so I was surprised when the massage therapist there "asked" me if I wanted anything to drink; pop, coffee, water...I opted for the water and was brought tap water in a glass. I could taste the chlorine. I would have thought that they could spring a couple bucks for bottled water from Walmart or something. So I finally found my way to the pedicure room to get my pedicure and the girl had me sit in the pedi chair and I waited for her to clean out the tub in front of me. My pedicure was something else. I left with the exact same amount of calluses on my feet and when I got into my car I had to clean out my own toenails from gardening the day before. She barely massaged my feet and legs at all and when asked to apply more pressure she didn't. I left feeling totally embarrassed that my boyfriend spent so much money ($132 for the 3 services which included an upgrade and a tip for all three girls) and I got a crappy service. This made him look bad, and made Sakora look even worse. He and I went back and complained. Long story short, all they wanted to do was give me another pedicure. Why would I want another pedicure? What? Wasn't the one they gave me bad enough? Ended up they offered me (only) $99 refund (he paid $133) and I never got the facial. Fine. I took the offer. They said they'd mail me the check. Got the check yesterday. It was for $66! Apparently, so I was told by Marion, the manager, the owner "changed her mind." Nice. Not to mention, it seems we're the laughing stock around that salon because of what happened. Apparently, they've all been talking about us since we went in and complained. We never once raised our voices or became rude at any point. If we had, I could maybe see them talking and laughing about us. Thus the blog. And until they give me the other $33 that they promised, I will blog every single week about the poor, unprofessional service they gave me and my boyfriend. I did not get the haircut I asked for. I came to this salon because it's where my sister gets her hair done. I made an appointment with the same girl and asked for the same cut. I came out with something completely different. My sister had asked the stylist to not let us look alike. I tried it for a couple of weeks and could never do anything with it. I went back for her to fix it and she charged me again. I still didn't get the cut I asked for. I had to go to another salon and got the exact cut I asked for. Terrible, terrible, terrible!! DO NOT go there if you need an up-do, and make-up for something important, like your sisters wedding!!! Though the girl was nice, extremely inexperienced. My hair looked awful, and I mean awful. And not to mention, my hair is very easy to work with. Frizzy, sloppy, not even "kind of" alright. I finally told the girl to leave it, and prayed I could fix it when I got to my hotel. Moved on to the the Make-up, and realized there is a different girl doing it, which was fine, but not what I was told from the beginning. FIRST thing I said, " I don't want it to look cakey." Well, that's exactly what I got, then some! A long story short, it looked God awful! There was soooo much make-up caked on my face it made me look like I was about 80. Both people "working" on me were completely inexperienced, and just "winging" it. And worse of all they would say, "oh, it looks good", even though other customers were looking at me shaking their heads. Worst experience ever, I'd rather threw a 100 out the window!! I then had to go back to the hotel, where my daughter told me i looked like wax, and my husband said, "they seriously did your hair?" I combed my hair out, re-did it myself,took about 8 layers of caked on make-up off, and re-did that also. Then did my daughters hair, and made it to the wedding with zero minutes to waste!
