I had a disappointing solo diner experience at this place. It's conveniently located near the train station, but that's where the positives end. The staff, particularly the hostess at the stand, was incredibly loud and disruptive, constantly chatting with each other. To make matters worse, the vegetables that arrived were lukewarm and soggy, as if they had been frozen. It was a clear case of serving subpar food. Overall, I won't be returning to this diner. A sushi / Japanese restaurant in Millburn, near the train station. They have a little parking lot you can use as a customer as street parking isn't always the easiest. Staff was attentive and quick, brought out water and a bucket to hold the white wine in ice. Their special rolls were good - the King Crab Roll, the King Dragon, Millburn Sunset, Sakura rolls were all excellent and if you order enough, they come out on a boat. Sashimi dinner mix was solid but not a stretch, three pieces each of five different fish (tuna, salmon, yellowtail, white tuna and fluke, I think), I've had more interesting, but the fish quality was good, chilled and no sinewy bits. Appetizers - the eggplant in miso was very good, edamame standard, and rock shrimp was just so-so (needed a bit more punch on the sauce, reminded me more of a sweet & sour shrimp). Softshell crab tempura was ok, and the spicy salmon on fried rice - I'm not so much a fan but others liked it. Will have to come by to try some more next time, including their ramen. read more

This was my second time here, both times I was meeting a friend for a sushi date. And my experience was just as lovely, delicious, and pleasant as the first time. I absolutely love the variety on the menu - from specialty sushi rolls, to 'regular' rolls. The QQ roll has become one of my favorites! Also, the ramen is excellent and the portion is plentiful. The service is superb!! The ambiance is delightful, dimly lit, and relaxing. The seating is situated just a little too close for my comfort. Being engrossed in good conversation is a helpful distraction to ignore how close the booth across from you is located. It feels a bit intrusive, but otherwise, no other gripes. read more

I don't have much good things to say. Could have been their off night. Double Toro Roll was terrible (could not finish it). Ikura didn't taste right. Uni was really gross. The server mentioned that it was from California but did not know where or who the supplier was. I regularly get Santa Barbara uni from Yama Seafood (delivered to home) so I know what California uni is supposed to taste like. read more

We came out of convenience, being right across the train station. We will admit the ambiance is nice, but it doesnt account for the high prices and unimpressive food. There are many upcharges for any kind of substitution, and the sushi menu wasn't expansive. The special rolls were nothing of interest, so we stuck with nigiri and maki rolls. The fried rice was good, and it was nice that it came with a soup and salad to make it an entree. There is a lot of hot kitchen items in the menu if you are bringing non-sushi fans! Pre pandemic vs post pandemic.. I really wasn't impressed. I used to really like Sakura, and have been coming for so many years. Something like 15+ years! Unfortunately, I have been here several times since the pandemic and have left disappointed. During the pandemic when they weren't doing dine in , I even stopped to pick up my takeout order and they wouldn't let me use the bathroom, I should have stopped coming after that because I haven't had a great meal here since. They added an automatic gratuity of 20% for a party of 5 at my last dinner here. With auto gratuity - comes inattentive service. I won't be coming back again. Take out was smooth on a Saturday night! The beef fried rice was delicious, rice had a great little crisp to it. Beef was very tender. The King Dragon Roll was delicious. Eel, shrimp tempura with avocado and cucumber is such a great combo. We also got the Spicy Kani Roll. We usually get a Spicy Kani Salad but decided to just have it in a roll and it was even better. I've always passed this restaurant and wanted to finally get some food here. There are 2 other sushi spots in the area and I'll be visiting those soon to compare. Service was standard. They had a busy night but they sat me fairly quickly. The ambiance was a chill vibe. Moderate noise and nicely lit and decorated. I ordered the Philadelphia roll, spicy salmon roll and chicken ramen. I came here with a small group of friends prior to a hike and it was the perfect meal to leave us satisfied without putting us in a food coma. The interior is clean and modern with a good amount of seating. They have limited parking spaces beside the restaurant in addition to street parking. We ordered two special rolls and the sashimi for 2 set. The special rolls were super flavorful. The sashimi for 2 was an unexpected delight! It came with 2 soups, 2 salads, 2 rice, and consisted of 41 pieces of sashimi (on a boat!) for $57. I thought it was a great deal considering all the food you are getting. Came here trying a new sushi spot away from the usual ones I frequent that have gotten down well what makes them great. The sheen shows here but doesn't hit like I'd like it to. I started with the harumaki - spring roll like appetizer. Good presentation and tasted good. All good there. I went all in with my entree getting the Triple 3 which is a very colorful special roll of spice crunchy tuna and avocado inside, wrapped with soy paper. Tuna, salmon and yellowtail with sauces. It was really good and they didn't chesp out with the avocado which I guess is why it was so expensive at $18 which I think is a tad steep. I also found the roll to be real mushy. Like any softer you could just put it in your mouth and swallow it. The interior is really fancy looking and it's BYOB which is of course a perk but. Placed an order for takeout over the phone and had multiple issues - first, the website says you get a free roll over $30. Over the phone, they told me the price is raised to $35 for a free roll. Then, I had to pay cash in order to get the free roll, which they told me only after I arrived, again not on the website. Then, the order was wrong - and while they offered to correct it, it would have been a wait and should have been correct from the beginning. Then, when I got home, I saw the free roll (a fish roll) was packed with the vegetable rolls instead of all of the vegetable rolls being together. Due to dietary restrictions, this caused the rolls not to be edible for some members of our group. The vegetable rolls could have easily all been packaged together and weren't. When I called, they said they've always done a mix of their rolls in each box --- but that's not been my experience anywhere else and with two big mistakes + the pricing in inaccuracy, I have no intention of ever coming back. read more

So sad the quality of the food here has gone down so tremendously. I used to order here quite frequently and always had a great experience. That is, until today. The rolls all had the thinnest layer of rice and the seaweed so unbelievably chewy. I just kept chewing and chewing and finally swallowed it whole. It just would not break down. The ginger was somewhat dried out, like perhaps it was sitting around a little too long. The kaniko salad, which used to be a favorite of mine, was cucumber, crab and a little fish roe- no sauce. It used to have a sweet mayonnaise based sauce on it that made the salad so good. This was so very bland. I'm not sure if the restaurant is under new ownership or not but the quality of the food has definitely taken a nosedive. read more

This place needs 15 stars not 5. The only place around that has cauliflower rice sushi. I live a low carb lifestyle and haven't had sushi in ages. This place gave me back my favorite meal without the guilt! I've already ordered it twice this week. And will probably do it again tomorrow. read more

Sat down right away and the waiter was ready for me. Inside the Place looks fancy for a sushi spot. I saw the Jalapeño Yellowtail appetizer on Yelp and had my heart set on trying it. I also ordered a standard roll- spicy crunchy tuna. I go simple and easy with new places that I've never had before.... Cuz I'm not sure if I will like it. Beside the prices on the sushi here are INSANE. Like the most expensive I've seen for a local spot. The yellowtail app was $13 and the spicy crunch tuna was $7.5 . I can admit that the yellow tail app was delicious but the roll is standard roll and it was mediocre at best- i would pay $4-5 the most . All their specialty rolls were 13-17 bucks a pop. Their prices are what I would expect in Vegas or NY. Would I come back here again? Unfortunately, the waitress was not proactive with checking in and brought our extra wasabi and ginger after the meal was all ready consumed. The table next to us obtained their food before us, and they arrived after us. While the food was good, I will probably seek another spot as the service detracted from the overall experience. I have had much better spicy salmon rolls at other places. However, the spider rolls were excellent, as were the others that we ordered. read more

Oh baby I like it raw! I have never had a bad meal nor bad experience here. The rice consistency within sushi and hand rolls is just right. It doesn't fall apart nor does it clump and overpower. My favorite hand roll is the Magic roll (very refreshing) followed by the Kiss Fire roll (a little smokey). They're a little bigger than traditional rolls, but hey, don't fuss, just put it in your mouth. Thank God they don't use mayonnaise. For more traditional rolls, I recommend the Eel Avocado and the Spicy Tuna. They all have great balance in flavor and texture. If you have a sweet tooth, i suggest one of these three for dessert: fried ice cream, regular ice cream, or mochi ice cream. I usually get the green tea mochi ice cream since it has a nice, subtle smokiness. I don't recommend the other desserts on their menu since I've seen other restaurants offer the same thing. Sakura's excellent for lunch, especially for taking back to the office. Your coworkers will be jealous. read more

Sakura is a nice cozy, small restaurant almost in the center of Millburn. My friend booked our reservation for 8:30PM on a Friday night and they were not busy. Although the atmosphere was good, I wasn't a fan of the menu. I wanted to order from their Combination Roll Menu however, apparently, you can only do that during lunch (but it doesn't specify this on their menu). It's like 2 rolls for $8 and 3 rolls for $12 (give or take the price). I also went the entire time of our meal without someone coming to our table and refilling my water. It also took 15 minutes after we finished our meal for someone to drop the check and another 10 minutes for the check to come back for us to sign the receipts and there was almost no one in the restaurant - so it's not like they were busy. Their Sushi was okay, but definitely not worth the price. You're better off having unlimited sushi and other stuff on the menu at Sushi Palace in Summit for $22! read more

Having lived in Millburn almost all of my life, I am a bit ashamed to say I have never been to Sakura until earlier this week. Instead of writing a long-winded review, all I'm going to say is that this place is fabulous. I'm a huge japan-o-file and have visited the country recently. Sakura is the most authentic american-japanese restaurant I've been to. Period. The green tea is roasted, as it should be. The harumaki was earthy and flavorful and the sushi was fresh, innovative and high quality. I'm so excited to go back and try their miso-ramen. Had our sushi cravings here and so far everything we ordered was satisfactory. My bf ordered his personalized sushi, while I had the ala carte sushi. The quality of the fish was average. It did not have the strong fishy smell or weird taste and texture which was great. I'm a snob when it comes to raw fish since you can get sick or get parasites from unsanitary or low quality fish. Love this sushi place! The lovely owners used to be located in Denville and i was a regular. When they re-opened years later they still had my contact info and invited me to the grand opening here- they still remember us whenever we come back. My favorite roll (and reason for returning) is the QQ roll. Delicious!
