I was in the mood for sushi but wanted to try some place I had not been to before so using the handy dandy Yelp app Umi Sushi popped up. A little under a half hour later I was at the restaurant. Umi Sushi is located in one of the main streets in Millburn with street parking nearby (check signs to know when to feed the meters). Umi Sushi is an unassuming looking mom and pop restaurant that looks like its glory days are long gone but they keep it clean and welcoming. I came pretty late, around 8pm on a Saturday so I was seated quickly at a booth. There were about six other patrons when I entered (but they were all gone by the time I was done). The hostess doubled as the waitress (though there was a person acting as a runner delivering food from the kitchen). She took my order quickly and my food came out within fifteen minutes. She also checked on me multiple times during the meal so no complaints here about the service. I had the Sashimi Deluxe, which includes 21 pieces of Sashimi, a bowl of white rice, miso soup and a small salad. I was surprised by this as many restaurants nowdays make you choose between soup OR salad so that was a value add for sure. The fish tasted good! It wasn't the freshest fish I had ever had before but hey, this isn't Omakase so one has to set expectations accordingly. The dish was presented with an adorable plastic palm tree island that I found super cute. The miso soup was okay, again, not the best but acceptable. My first time here. It's a medium sized venue on the main strip of the downtown area of Millburn. It's on a one way street with Metered parking. Open feeling interior, with a few outdoor tables & chairs, & the interior front can be opened on nice days/nights. Service was quick. Standard style interior of what you'd expect from a sushi restaurant. I had the Tuna Sushi, Shell Fish Lover, & Hole In One. I'm sad to say I was not impressed with the quality of the sushi here. We are very happy that they have opened-up on Staten Island where the old Charlie Brown used to be, off the expressway. They are a very nice place to o if you want a huge and diverse selection of Asian food and delicacies and do not mind trying, along with all the standard Chinese food classics, some different, not as main stream food that is worth exploring. They include hot pot and Korean style BBQ and while the sushi is not our favored on SI, overall, it is a big place that you can bring a larger group to, and there is food for everybody! I came here at 12 on a Friday, I sat down with my friends and immediately was hit with ferociously terrible smell that took away my appetite. Also, expected 4 menus, they gave us 2 menus and when we asked for the extra menus (being 2) the waitress gave us attitude and made fun of us in her native language. I happen to speak the language and knew what she was making fun of us about. My friend was the only one to withstand the smell and still order a drink. He ordered a tai iced tea and when it finally arrived it was mostly made up of milk. It tasted horrible as the stench then populated my mouth after contact. The waitress is horrible, the place in terms of smell is horrific, and the food is an absolute abomination. Sunday and finally a non rainy Sunday! So, we decided to go out, but before the outdoors, we were hungry for some sushi. I just got my gallbladder taken out, so I didn't eat much. I did read the reviews, and a lot of people seemed to complain about service. However, I did have a very attentive service. The place was bigger and nicer than I thought. It goes in a bit deep. Nice to go with your family. The house salad was good. It's bigger than I usually see in other sushi restaurants. We tried the ceviche tacos... they were ok... I was excited for then, but I think it was hard to get the flavors because the fried shell was "thick" (for being small), and all I tasted was a fried tortilla flavor We also got the sexy roll because I love scallops, and it was a very tasty roll indeed! We should have walked out when we smelled cleaning fluid in the air at 8pm on a Friday night but We were hungry. We had two boring C-quality sushi rolls and hand rolls and are pretty sure they used BBQ sauce on our udon noodles. It was not a Japanese dish. Hot tea was good. Service ok but indifferent. Knowing that the fish has not been fresh, the last few times, I've gone, I thought I would try again, but just get the chicken teriyaki. Once again, their miso soup is simply not good. Which is sad because it should be simply reheating something in a microwave. What should not be cooked in the microwave is chicken teriyaki -- old reheated microwaved chicken served on a plate with microwaved broccoli, and served with a thick brown sauce that's not even a teriyaki sauce and a side of poorly cooked rice. In the past, the fish has never been fresh. I'm not sure why you would bother paying the high prices for a lease in Millburn just to have your restaurant sit mostly empty because you can't be bothered to have fresh food. Used to order from here often but just lost a customer. I got delivery of over $100 worth of food based on my usual order. Food came in paper bag that was falling apart because there was some leaking - not a big deal it happens. But then the food was just not the same quality it has been. Everything tasted quite bland, all the tempuras were soggy, and one of the orders didn't include vegetables that were supposed to be in it. I then called the restaurant to let them know. First thing the guy told me after I said I could take a picture was that I need to look harder for the missing vegetables as he guarantees they're there and adding on that he trusts his chef so no need to send pics.... came here for lunch yesterday with my sister. pretty empty. plenty of seats. parking is metered but the first 15 minutes is free. we were able to sit wherever we wanted. the server came pretty quickly with the menus and water. we both got the maki lunch special which comes with miso soup, salad, and 2 ( or 3) rolls from the basic roll section. i got 3 but i was full - 2 is fine, but if you want to take the extra rolls home, it's a good deal. the rolls were fine, nothing special. overall, not bad, but won't say it's a go-to place. definitely experienced better. read more

Umi Sushi is my go-to Japanese restaurant in the area. I always come in Saturdays during my lunch break at work. I always order the hand rolls -- they are to die for. Danny, the owner, is extremely kind and helpful and will make sure you enjoyed your meal. Service is excellent, I have not been disappointed yet. The restaurant is medium sized and can looks like it can fit about 25 people on a busy night. However, big groups are an issue as there are no large tables. Nonetheless, it is still large and seating for small parties is never a problem. I personally am a big fan of sashimi and hand rolls. I usually order the Spicy Salmon, Tuna, & yellowtail hand rolls. They are all a perfect combination of tempura flakes and pure fish. I will be back for sure. When anybody asks me for a delicious sushi spot nearby, I always recommend Umi. Am I glad we gave this sushi joint in downtown Millburn the chance to impress on our recent theatre outing. Candidly, my husband and I haven't been wowed by any of the local Japanese restaurants after living in the area for so many years...and we have tried many and repeatedly gone back to some hoping for more consistency. But alas, we often venture to the city for the freshest sashimi and creative Asian dishes we often crave. Perhaps Umi will change our minds and our dining destination! First, the service is on point. Servers are thoughtful, polite, attentive but not overbearing and spot on in terms of recommendations. We started with the yellowtail Serrano pepper appetizer which was thinly sliced, tender and lightly dressed with a ponzu sauce and topped with the green chili pepper. Scrumptious! We enjoyed the specials including a live scallop sashimi, blue shrimp and a rolled named after one of the sushi chefs (name escapes me) the ratio of rice to filling in the roll was nice and the eight pieces were sufficient in size and nicely presented on the plate. We also enjoyed some pieces of tuna, kanpachi, and King white salmon-also a special that night. They gave us lots of extra ginger as requested too. They really pay attention to detail and presentation and the curly Q three colored radish spaghetti style adorned each plate beautifully. We had plenty of time to relax in the quiet simply decorated digs before the dinner rush and made our show down the street at the Papermill in plenty of time. Like most dining establishments in Millburn, this place is also BYO which we enjoy. If I had one small comment it would be about the value proposition. Specials are priced accordingly and are more typical of NYC both in price and portion size. So while the quality is spectacular, the bill can climb quickly and you might not feel like you ate or ordered a lot given the $$$! Since we value quality over quantity especially when it comes to sashimi, we will certainly be back. I might even give the take out a shot, which is generally a no no in my book for sushi! In the midst of the virus lockdown you'd expect food handlers to wear masks. Well not here - from the sidewalk you can see people behind the sushi bar without anything covering their mouths and noses. Yet the to-go hostess pushing bags through the plexiglass box wears a mask. On a normal day their sushi is at best mediocre (ok quality, small portions, ginger salad dressing tastes like it's from a supermarket and salad is limp, miso soup and katsu are decent) and it's overpriced -$88 for two regular sushi dinners and kids bento boxes. Here's why it gets a single star: On Mother's Day 2019, we placed an order for take out at 5:45 and told it would be ready at 7:05, an eighty minute wait. Salmon and tuna that BEAT several top sushi places we've been to, and clearly the best in this area by far. Tried this small little place in Millburn a couple of weeks ago with two friends. Understated, simplistic decor-- nothing too fancy. Tried the sweet potato and avocado rolls. Came with 6 pieces each. Flavors were amazing! I have low standards for sushi so I don't know if that means too much but I would definitely come back for cheap sushi. Service was great, and fast too! Always a plus. Had dinner there last night and as usual most things were fairly decent. The server messed up my order and brought me two serving of uni, in addition to my order, which I didn't ask for and forgot my anago. No big deal, I like uni so I said he could leave it but bring my anago as well. After I tasted the uni, I noticed a very bitter taste in my mouth. Perhaps the uni had gone bad but my wife, who also had it, said it was probably the shiso leaf that was incorporated into the sushi. Shiso! Why would anyone put a bitter herb like shiso (which I love in other dishes) with uni? Uni is so oceany, a bit briney, creamy and smooth. It's perfect in its raw state and really shouldn't be bothered with more ingredients. If you want to jazz it up a bit, one has to be careful to ensure that to maintain the integrity of the flavor profile that makes it so unique. Putting a raw shiso leaf counters, in a bad way, the flavor of this awesome product. Generally, I see shiso used in cold noodle dishes or as garnish for sushi but never IN the sushi itself. It was off putting, to say the least. My maguro slices were also quite thin, thinnest piece of tuna I've ever seen in a sushi restaurant. The anago was also a bit slim too. Well, pretty disappointed. Wish the waiter was more proactive and suggested that he bring me another order, particularly since I didn't order it in the first place and he still charged me even after I expressed my hug disappointment with it. Perhaps I should have asked for a new order but decided just to finish my meal and get out of there. I was tired and it was the end of a long day. Didn't need more debating. So sad since I've regarded Umi as one of the better sushi places in the area. Still a decent place, nothing was SO bad that it merits a downgrade. I just wish that more restaurants paid attention to these details. Customers WILL PAY for true quality, don't see why so many restauranteurs (mostly suburban) don't get this. Quality doesn't have to be relegated only to expensive places using only prime ingredients. There's plenty of awesomeness I've discovered in food trucks and diners.
