Service was prompt-- we were seated almost immediately once our whole group was gathered, and immediately began to be served. Meats came out fast. They have a 3 meat at a time limit here, but given that they're doing most of the cooking for you, it helps keep things fresh and things are coming off the grill pretty quickly anyways, so the limit does not really come at the cost of velocity of consumption (if you're that kind of AYCE eater). Service here is pretty proactive, coming by regularly and taking orders promptly. We got a mix of meats and sides throughout. Pork belly is a winner, both slabs and slices. Beef intestines were not as we remembered from other locations, but nonetheless good. Sliced beef brisket and jowl are also good cuts for folks looking for something new. Not too much of a fan of marinated meets, but I'm sure they'd live up to the same level of quality too. One huge plus about this particular chain (for which you do pay a bit of a premium in the price) is that they have pretty amazingly efficient grills and vents, such that you can largely avoid smelling like your AYCE KBBQ afterwards. Pretty uncommon, and totally forgivable when it happens, but a nice plus for this place!

Since they recently opened, there are still many kinks that they have to work through and the growing pains of it was felt during this evening's dining experience. Initially, the kitchen appetizers and entrees (hibachi) arrived relatively quick. Most of them were decent, but some were notably in need of improvements, specifically the chicken yakitori which was extremely dry, and the cheese crab ragoon, which could benefit from having some more filling since 85% of it were just batter. The beef and scallop hibachi were pretty flavorful, but from my personal opinion, the steak had a bit too much black pepper that overwhelmed the rest of its' flavor profile, a simple fix. The issue and the primary driver of this review's rating was the sushi/sashimi. They were perhaps understaffed so most of the items took 30-40 minutes to arrive for both rounds of our orders. The appetizers were far more enjoyable than the actual sushi, sashimi, and special rolls. A must get is the salmon tataki and the salmon kiss, the ponzu sauce was just so delicious and refreshing! What threw us off a bit were their kani salad, where they used spicy mayo instead of regular mayo which most other kani salad often comes with. Their spicy mayo is also spicier than other restaurants, which although was tolerable for me, it unfortunately wasn't for some of the people we were with. Lastly, the sushi and sashimi were inconsistent and most of it were not prepared well (as you can see in the photo how not aesthetically pleasing the rolls looked), where they either were not sliced through (as evident in the photos), or they simply were not of greatest quality, which although is understandable for some AYCE locations, we really had high hopes for Sushi Shima which unfortunately were not met. Nonetheless, I want to note that they are still growing and learning to run as efficiently as possible to learn from their mistakes and improve on their selections. I truly believe that Sushi Shima has the potential of being one of the best AYCE sushi-sashimi restaurant in all of Staten Island, and I really wish them nothing but the best. Once again, thank you so much to Michelle for taking such amazing care of my family and I. She also came by multiple times to apologize for the delay and empathized with us, helping us ease our own discomfort for being there for over 2 hours. The selections are a bit limited on the conveyor belt so we ordered on the digital device that they provided. Some of the food items that I remembered we ordered were soft-shell crab, fried oysters, takoyaki, salmon sashimi, spicy salmon hand roll. As you can see the picture of the softshell crab is kinda small. It looks very different from the picture in the menu. It tasted all right. The spicy salmon hand-roll is bigger than I thought. It has a lot of salmon in it, it tasted fresh and filling for its size! The takoyaki is made to order, it is very good! On the conveyor belt, they labeled most of items, however, there was a label named "other" where they placed various dishes after, I wish they can but a proper label so we can identify what we were eating. One type of fish that I recognize from the "other"section is mackerel. They have extensive list of beverages like alcohol, bubble tea, and some desserts. The restaurant is spacious, clean and well lit. There are restrooms for customers to use. The staff is friendly and speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin.
