I decided to come and have a nice dinner at sakuras today it was around 7 o'clock and I decided to sit outside which was very nice wasn't hot but yet warm. I went ahead and sat down and decided to check out the menu. And I decided to order the iced green tea which was a little slushy and the ice was crushed. I also ordered a salad with the tempera shrimp. I also ordered the tempura zen, Another dish that I have ordered in the past that was delicious. Now here is why I'm giving them one star why because it took over an hour to even get my food I'd never got my tempura Zen that's right they were still waiting for that last dish to be Served to me. Yes over 1 hour sitting outside and people were complaining outside that they also were waiting longer than me. So I don't know what's going on with one of my very great places I love to eat the food quality of the tempura was low quality why is because it was very greasy and the shrimp was Not very crispy but yet sloshy and seem like limp after being in fried oil. Wasn't very appetizing I was in shock actually that I was treated as though I never existed. Trying to get the waitress to come out all she did was way at me with one hand and that was it. Unfortunately after this fiasco it's gonna be a while before I return if ever I have to read to see if anything has gotten any better. I hate writing bad reviews but unfortunately I had to do it so that everybody could see what is going on with this restaurant. You have the right to know the truth. read more

Checked out Sakura for the first time and had a great experience. The staff is attentive and friendly. The venue is nicely decorated and clean. The fish tasted fresh and was plentiful. Not my top choice for raw, but SS&B has pretty good happy specials. I like to go for a few apps and a simple roll. Located across the street from HEB, so...no shoppy when hangry. Lol. Just me? Quite large menu, Japanese, Chinese fusion. Loads of rolls, including "signature." Also lots of cooked dishes (e.g., ramen, rice bowls, Chinese entrées, soups, and more). Ambience is very casual. Can get really crowded, especially on the weekends. I can't speak for the service other than the bartenders. I've always sat at the bar and their very friendly. read more

Great little sushi spot in Lakeway! It's definitely a go to for a lot of people out here. The menu has sushi and Chinese food as well. Friday night, it was packed. It was also expected. The wait time wasn't bad, 20 min. I got a text when they had a table ready. We sat down and were offered water. A long wait after we had a server come by and we gave her our order. The food didn't take long to come out. It is large portions. I thought I ate about half until I dished the left overs in a box, and realized how much more was actually left. Wow! I ordered the crab rangoons. It's an order of 5 and they are very delicious. I also ordered the orange chicken which came with white rice in a separate small bowl. The orange chicken has a wonderful sauce and some perfectly steamed broccoli. (It did heat very well the next day in the oven) so I really got 2 great meals. Service was slow, took a long time to get our check. We had to ask someone if they could get our server. But it was packed and I'm sure it was just an over sight. They did turn the projectors on and the wall was like a moving aquarium. Very nice scenery to look at. Hope to be back again. read more

We'd heard good things about the restaurant and finally made it in. I was surprised at how nice the decor was, but thrown off by the cheesy aquarium images on the shades/projector screens that covered two entire walls. I feel like they're confused about how they want to present themselves. Our server took a long time to come over, so I was irritated in the beginning. I almost walked out. We ordered seaweed salad and two rolls. If you're a raw sushi fan, there aren't a ton of options. The seaweed salad was too sweet and it set me up to be disappointed with the sushi, but the sushi was actually really good! The sushi itself brought my review from a 3 to 4. The Fire Angel was loaded with seafood and the eel roll was pretty darn big, too. I recommend sticking to the sushi based on my experience. read more

Hot & Sour Soup: Not too much on the spicy side but was still very good and had layers of flavors Wonton Soup: Large portion size compared to the hot & sour soup. Went there with my family and a friend and their family. Took my kid to the bathroom for handwashing and saw an employee come out of there without washing hands and he went directly to the kitchen. Told this to the host who seated us and he did not care much about it and shrugged off the instance. We decided to take off without ordering. I hope the person who went to the kitchen washed their hands in the kitchen hen area somewhere before touching any food. I don't even know if they deserve two stars but the egg roll was really good! The rolls are also not bad but their special house made sauce is just eel sauce. Extremely disappointed I ordered two rolls and gave very specific instructions. No crab in one of the rolls and no cream cheese in the other roll, also asked for seaweed instead of soy paper on one of the rolls. As soon as I got home to eat I find the one roll has soy paper and luckily no cream cheese as I have issues with dairy but the other roll had crab which my boyfriend is allergic to, I asked for no crab because I want no crab. I called the restaurant and they offer to make a new one mind you I don't live down the street and it's another 45 mins round trip for me to fix their mistake. Nothing else offered to us. I also gave them a good tip knowing I was asking for changes and more work for them. The food is fine but If I ask for modifications and you say no problem I expect that Luckily I tried it before he did and saved us from a trip to the ER. Yelp gets it right again. Four stars. * * * Sakura Sushi executes well on your basic suburban Asian Fusion Formula. Sell Sushi. Sell Chinese Food. Have a bar. Sakura Sushi goes one up on this by offering eight different kinds of dumplings. This way they can say on their menu that they serve "dim sum". I suspect that if spaghetti and meatballs were ever to become popular again, they would serve spaghetti and meatballs too. * * * That said, a lot of Sushi + Chinese + Full Stocked Bar places are pretty good. Sakura Sushi is pretty good. My Zen Tempura roll was served piping hot - and it was an admirable execution of deep fried sushi. I would have that dish again any time. I couldn't drink because I had a lot of driving to do. But the bar selection was excellent. They had a lot of my favorite top shelf whiskeys and a credible selection of interesting sakes. I didn't get a chance to sample their Chinese - but I suspect that is pretty decent as well. * * * The ambience of the room is kind of funny. They have a corner location with picture windows on two sides - so you get a great view of the comings and goings at the Oaks at Lakeway. They have two different TVs showing sports events. I normally don't go to Japanese restaurants to watch sports events - unless of course they are showing sumo. If they had been showing sumo, those TVs would have had my undivided attention. It felt weird to be eating sushi while watching Kansas State basketball. But if I had had a couple of sakes in me, I could see how Kansas State could be whole lot more interesting. If you are there for romantic ambience, sit by the windows and have both you and your lover put your backs to the basketball game. The window view will be fine. * * * That said, the interesting story about Sakura is not the food or the room. It is the location. Sakura is in a strange combination of strip mall and artificial downtown called The Oaks at Lakeway. For a long time, all the retail in Lakeway, Texas was in strip malls on Route 620. You drove up and down 620, you saw everything the city had. The city didn't have much compared to the size and wealth of the population. Lakeway was majorly underserved. * * * This has now changed big time. The building of multiple shopping centers in neighboring Bee Cave - all called the Galleria - has provided major retail for the area. (Yes, all the malls are called the Galleria. Remember Dr. Seuss's Mrs. McCabe who had 23 sons and she named them all Dave?) One of them, the Hill Country Galleria, is a full-fledged fake town built much along the lines of the Domain in Austin. The mini-town has been such a success that it is getting micro-imitators in Lakeway itself. One of them is the Oaks at Lakeway. The Oaks is a four block deep three block wide imitation town center by the side of Highway 620. The Oaks is a good news bad news joke for the retailers within. The good news is that by going four blocks deep, there is a lot more room for stores than there would be if everything had to be one block deep facing 620. Having more stores is definitely a good thing. The bad news is that no one can see what the stores are in the second, third or fourth tier. So the stores in the back tiers have a major marketing problem. There are miniscule signs indicating the existence of the back stores at the entrances to the Oaks. Most 620 traffic will go by so fast, that the signs serve only as guideposts for people who already know that a business is there that they want to visit. Dying of invisibility is a real risk for tenants at the Oaks. * * * Sakura has worked aggressively to solve this problem. On Route 620, four miles away as one approaches Lakeway, there is a gigantic billboard advertising Sakura Sushi - and their next door neighbor - a crepes place. It is pretty rare to have a small Japanese restaurant pay the big bucks to rent a highway billboard miles from their establishment. But this is what Sakura Sushi has to do. Sakura Sushi and the neighboring crepes place have customers. Other restaurants in the back tiers that do not have billboards are not doing nearly as well. * * * I am glad that Sakura Sushi solved this problem. They are a good restaurant that deserves support. And here is a lesson for some other restaurants I know in Austin but will not name. These establishments deserved to stay alive but suffered miserable deaths. This restaurant, located in Lakeway is a great little Asian restaurant. Not only does it serve sushi, it also serves Chinese food, and dim sum. The dim sum is nice and light, and they have a wide variety of it! Restaurant is large and open with easy access and lots of parking on the outside. I ordered the supra combo number, which is a combination of sushi, which is a chef choice of 8 pieces plus a spicy tuna roll. My wife chose a won ton Rangoon which is filled with cream cheese, and sweet sauce and a rainbow roll. Everything we've tried to this restaurant over the course of many years has always been very good. I ordered takeout from here and the employees were nice. Opted for the Bento Box lunch which was a little pricey ($20), but I was so happy I could pick Unagi (freshwater eel) as a protein. The Bento Box comes with multiple items--a choice of soup (hot and sour, eggdrop, miso), vegetable tempura plus one large shrimp tempura, protein (beef, chicken, shrimp, Unagi), rice or fried rice, and 4 California roll sushi pieces. Everything was beautifully represented in the Bento. Loved the tempura which not only came with vegetables, but also small egg rolls The batter was very soft and light. The Unagi wasn't bad, a little bit piled up in the Bento. Sushi rolls were fresh. Overall a nice meal, but too much for one person. Would have liked a cheaper version with less food. We had the tempura calamari for an appetizer. The rolls we had were Tiger Eye, 5th Avenue and Fire Angel. We couldn't pick a favorite. This was our go-to sushi restaurant for years. The food and service were OK. The ambiance is horrifying. Suddenly it turned into a sports bar with gigantic screens on the walls as well as a terrifying video that plays on the floor - making it perilous to enter and exit. We're here visiting Austin for the weekend and had to make it by Sakura. Last time we were here was last year when my fiancé's cousin took us to Sakura and we were blown away by the food and service so of course we had to go back! It was crowded so we sat at the bar but that didn't stop them from providing excellent service. Henry was our waiter and he was awesome. I had a glass of Sangria and we had an appetizer of Shumai and honestly I can't remember the sashimi but it was DIVINE. We then had the Chong Qing Chicken, the happy ending roll and also seared scallop nigiri. We also had some special sushi that the chef "Po" had whipped up that he called a Japanese meatball. It was incredible, salmon and cream cheese in a ball of avocado. And I can't forget the Tower appetizer also. We had Sami bombs which hit the spot and we ended the night with Tempura Ice cream. Overall the whole experience at Sakura was 5 stars. We can't wait to go back to visit Austin and visit Sakura. The food, drinks, staff and atmosphere are phenomenal. read more
