I have not eaten at Shan before even though it is right across RR620 from my office. Great looking menu with a huge selection of item. Waiter was efficient and quickly took my drink and food order. Within 10 minutes I had my entree on the table. I ordered the Chongquig Style Spice Beef. The order was large and I took home 2/3rds of it. Great flavor and good spice level. I finally visited here after driving by it a few times and noticed they have decent reviews on Yelp. We tried several items, including the eggplant, pork intestine, spicy chicken cubes, tofu, pork ribs, fried rice, and lo mein. The spicy chicken is not quite as spicy as other restaurants that serve a similar dish. It does have some ginger and whole peanuts in it, which makes it a little different. The lo mein is pretty standard. The pig intestine is a weird dish that has sort of a pungent taste. I mainly ate the onions, jalapeños and bell peppers within this dish. The fried tofu may have been the least liked dish on the table. Slathered in sweet n sour sauce. It's just a weird combination. The fried rice, pork ribs, and eggplant are pretty standard dishes with not a lot of standout. Overall, the service is friendly, and I like the orange cucumber and grape flavored water that is served at each table. read more

What i got was a plate of onions with a small amount of yellow meat. I also ordered pork egg rolls. One burned and was unbeatable. Shan looks nice when you first walk in. Don't look too hard. * * * The first sign that something was wrong was that the floor to ceiling windows hadn't been washed in a long long time. The windows were not as filthy as windows can get - but they were bad. The second sign was that either sunlight or wear and tear had discolored blotches in the artwork on the sunblinds. The third sign was the spareribs I ordered. Some ribs had nearly no meat on them. The others were heavy on fat and gristle. Some sort of red sparerib sauce - possibly out of a bottle - had been dumped on them at the last minute just before serving. We wanted to check out this restaurant. I'm glad we went for lunch because it was not crowded and they have lunch specials. (You might have to ask about them but I posted a photo). We were pleasantly surprised to see they have juicy dumplings also know as Xiao long bao. They were good: where else can you order this in Lakeway? I gave four stars because it was good. If it has blown my socks off then I would have given 5. I will also say if you are ever trying a new restaurant, have low expectations. read more

Excellent Szechuan style Chinese food with non-spicy options! They just opened, and their food and service is amazing! We tried their Mixed Vermicelli, their Beef and Broccoli, and their Fried Redfish dish (they had bass today so we substituted). They also gave us some homemade egg rolls to trial which were the best we've ever had and we've eaten Chinese food regularly in Houston's Chinatown! My wife found them in her FB ATX which is an Asian food group. Their flavor of the cooking is very good; I ordered the combo lomein w/chix & shrimp. The chef specialty is from the central region (Szechuan) so if you like spicy this is the place for you. My wife ordered the Mongolian beef which was excellent as well as the vegetable egg roll. Shan is a gem in the Lakeway / Bee Cave neighborhood. The food is extremely flavorful and service is adequate and fast. Service was horrible from the minute we walked in the door. We were greeted by a coughing, sneezing server. The portions were large, but once they dropped the very mediocre food off we never saw them again. I ordered "broccoli and chicken" The broccoli had brown marks on all of their stems as was not appetizing. I was so disappointed. All the employees were eating lunch and we had to call someone over to get our check. We will not be returning. Food came nice and hot. My shrimp were cooked perfectly. The portions were generous. The Hot & Sour soup was a bit too starchy for our tastes. The Shrimp with veggies dish was too sweet. No amount of soy sauce could fix that. And the spring roll was too tough to enjoy so I left half. The staff was friendly but not very attentive. I couldn't get a refill on my water. Incredibly delicious food! Was visiting from three hours away and have been craving over & over again since. Comfortable, casual yet classy atmosphere with small outdoor patio as an option. Hot & Sour soup was the best we've ever had. White rice was delicious on its own- wonderful flavor without anything on it. The General Tso's Chicken was Top Notch & cooked to perfection. To put things in perspective, I got home with this take out order at 7p.... It's now 7:46p, this food is in the trash and I'm writing a review. Look at the pictures. Pay attention to the receipt. I mean it when I say I've never in my life taste food more disgusting in every single way you can possibly imagine. The fried rice was just brown rice that taste like sh*t. Not even edible! The Singapore noodles taste like melting plastic. Had a bite then through it away. The shrimp eggrolls were soggy, falling apart and drenched in fry oil... ugh!! Not quite sure what the brown blob was. I truly could go through every single thing on this order and absolutely destroy it. But I won't. I'm just going to say don't be like me and try to roll the dice on this place. It should be named SHAM not Shan. Awful awful awful awful food. They should be ashamed. Poor excuse of a restaurant. We weren't impressed and won't be going back, despite a convenient location to us. The first time we tried to go they had a fire in their kitchen.
