I work in the area and I've found that north Richmond has very few places that can cater to vegans. I'm pleased to say that this is one of those few places! Conveniently located in a rather busy parking lot, Sala Thai offers a comfortable dining area with very nice decor. The dine in service has always been very good to me, so I enjoy eating here when I can take a long lunch. Onto the food! They have a really great selection of vegan options ranging from appetizers, curry, classic Thai entrees, and soup. I do wish they had a vegan noodle soup option but that's not enough for me to knock down a star. The dishes are always served piping hot with fresh ingredients and booming with flavor. Takeout dishes are no exception, I've taken soup home to Lafayette and it's still nice and hot. It seems there are a lot of negative reviews for this place. Maybe the meat/seafood dishes leave something to be desired? I eat here literally at least 2-3 times a week and haven't been disappointed yet. Sala Thai is always good, but most of the time it's outstanding. They can be a little inconsistent with the spice level, that's my only complaint. Otherwise, I love this place. This is my Friday night go to. For me it's been extremely hard to find a good Thai place. Ever since and I found this hidden jewel I've been a frequent customer. I LOVE the crab fried rice, sala pot stickers with the special sauce uuuummm yummy it's so good, spicy basil, pad thai and I think I had the beef and garlic string bean which was really good. I honestly really did not like Thai food at all, but a couple weeks ago my friend was raving about how good this place is and that it could change my mind, and this restaurant absolutely did. My first time eating here I was so amazed at the decor. The atmosphere this small restaurant sets makes you feel like you've traveled to Thailand. The art work on the walls, and the decor around really gives it the feel of a street festival and I love staring at it all every time. My first time eating in, I ordered their Thai tea and the sala pot stickers and have officially become obsessed! I've been frequenting this restaurant more and more basically to order the sala thai pot stickers , and have tried different dishes like the catfish on a skillet, the BBQ prawns, but my favorite entree thus far is absolutely their fried tilapia over fried rice. Today I came in and got my pot stickers, tried the pad Thai and BBQ shrimp. Pad Thai is still not my favorite dish, but my friend absolutely loved it! Who would've thought that just going over to use the Wells Fargo ATM, that I would stumble upon this gem?! Came in right during lunch hour, it wasn't too crowded, and the waitresses were really sweet. The vibe of the place is Nice, being a hot day it was nice and cool in there thank God. The service was nice and quick, the lunch salad was good especially because of the dressing whatever it is, it's delicious. I ordered the fried chicken over fried rice and asked if I could substitute the sweet chili sauce for yellow curry, which ended up being the best decision! I love this spot, Tip and Nadeer are very hospitable to my family and I. Especially because Tip is Khon Thai and we are Thai, there's a special bond that's formed when we visit. My sister's always host dinners and we had my nieces baby shower here as well. The food is very Americanzed here. I understand because the demographics of people that come around here want sweet, not too spicy, high sodium Thai food instead of authentic spicy Thai food. They have to survive somehow and appease the surrounding neighborhood. I still give them four stars for their hospitality, their staff's service, and the fact that they have authentic Thai decorations as well as music playing. They get a plus for the king of Thailand being displayed as well. Overall if you're hungry, want to being quick to eat and decent Thai food I would come here. You won't be disappointed. We told them how the prices on the website are different and they were passive about it saying "yeah" like they already knew about it. Ended up not getting the food because of this. Overall pretty great place to grab some fresh Thai! Tried the drunken noodles and they were refreshingly good. Sauce had a nice flavor and wasn't too spicy so you could add just the right amount of heat for yourself. I really liked that. The banana fried ice cream was a fun treat too! All very delicious! Short Story: Long wait, poor service, lack of attention to detail, biased quality of service. Long story: Oh Sala Thai. I'd given you sooo many chances. So I came in, for lunch with 3 of my male coworkers. We sat (I was pointed to a table, not walked to one), were given salad, got menus waited 15 minutes and finally got to order. We didn't order anything too extraordinary PadPrikKing, Shrimp Pad Thai (medium heat) , Cashew Nut Chicken( medium heat) and BBQ Chicken. Then we waited... And waited... 30 minutes pass, my Co workers get their food and I was told it would be another minute for my Pad Thai. I say okay and continue drink water and conversing. My coworkers refused to eat until I got my food. 15 minutes pass we flag down the server and ask where my food was since the person directly next to me ordered the same thing I did, but was sat at least 15 minutes after us, the entire table had their entrées and they'd ordered appetizers! 5 more minutes pass and my food finally arrives! By now my coworkers food is lukewarm but they try to enjoy it anyway. I'm underwhelmed by my food as there is zero spice(I asked for medium) , the tofu was practically cremated and it was very wet. I added the additional spice from the peppers on the table, ate 5 bites, looked at the time and realized we were now late returning to work. We try to flag a server for Togo boxes and our check, she acknowledged my coworkers hand in the air but ASKED THE TABLE NEXT TO US WHAT THEY NEEDED BEFORE ASKING US ANYTHING!!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS?! We wait another 7 minutes and finally get the attention of the host/server guy who brings our check and started to walk away before we could even ask for boxes. Mind you the female server took the pad Thai ordered at the table next to us to the back to be boxed. The male server/host returned to our table with boxes and bags for us... I guess we don't get the same service as other paying customers huh. So we boxed up our food paid the bill and vowed to not return. The service here has Always been crappy. Whether u are the only person there or the restaurant is jam packed. If you employ people that presume they won't be tipped and treat folks the way we were treated today, they won't get tips and you will lose business. read more

READ ME BEFORE DINING HERE Came here for a dinner w/ the family. Ordered the seafood Jumbo prawns, pad see yew, and bbq chicken for my kids. Waiter did not know anything about the menu, and a few of the patrons around me were waiting for an hour. First sip of my thai ice tea and i knew I shouldve packed and go (added a cup full of ice, 99% milk and a splash of thai tea). After receiving my food over 45 mins later, I only recieved my pad see yu and seafood prawns. Pad see yew noodles were not thoroughly cooked (pretty darn hard). The seafood prawns were not prawns. They resemble cocktail shrimp if that. Shrimp was undercooked and had no flavor. BBQ chicken arrived 15 minutes after and we were ready to cancel but they brought it out. Chicken did not taste fully cooked and had a "different" taste to it. I def. did not feed this to my children. Hopefully i didn't contract a stomach bug from this raw food... Anyhow, I shouldve took the patron's next to me advice and just go to the Mai Thai restaurant across the street. Dine here if you enjoy undercooked food, long wait and bad thai ice tea. read more

This week after work me and a few coworkers were looking for a place to eat. We first were thinking to go to In N Out, but that was going to take a long time as In N Out has a very long line of customers and although they do work hard to move each vehicle and complete each order, the waiting time still is not the shortest. While going to Pinole we decided to change plan and go to the Thai restaurant near Walgreens and we did. It was a very good choice! One of asked for a cashew nut plate, another for a lamb plate and I asked for a salmon basil plate. The food was delicious! The salmon basic was the best. So soft sizzling, and with lots of vegetables. I also added some extras extra spicy sauce. The cashew nut and lamb were ok but not as much as the salmon basil which was the star of the show. So Sala Thai is the co creation of a wonderful couple - things are always better when two cultures get together on a joint venture in this case a Moroccan guy ( Maghribi hustle) and his wife who is Thai (excellent culinary skills). My husband first was excited to find another Moroccan living locally and I was excited because I love Thai food :) We decided to go on a family date night - that means we brought the toddler and our babysitter along to treat her to a nice meal for all her hard work. Parking is plentiful and easy to access for those who are differently abled. Everything we ordered was amazing and well priced. I honestly can't wait for a real "date night" just for me and my husband at this place. The decor is really nice (my favorite is the back lit hand carved wood benches) and survived our toddler! We were surprised by the owner - Nadir's amazing generosity ( ma sha Allah) and willingness to put up with our loud toddler - special especially since it is extremely rare that we eat out. Now there are variations of this dish depending on who is in the kitchen making it, but I have never been disappointed. I thought Thai would be a yummy Monday night dinner, so I ordered on Eat24 and showed up right around the time the order was supposed to be ready. I was told it'd be 10 more minutes, no biggie. I came back about 15 mins later and was greeted with an attitude by someone different. When i told her I was picking up an order she told me it wasn't ready yet, 10 more mins. After waiting for a total of 40 minutes I was given an order. Fortunately I decided to check it once I got in the car because it was the wrong order. It seems this place is a popular dinner spot (probably even more so on Mondays). Given that is such a small space with very few workers, I can understand it getting backed up. Usually this place is really good, but something changed. I'm talking both front and back of house. We had a new waitress, but that should mean she hasn't memorized the menu. It doesn't excuse bringing out tea bags, but no cups of hot water until we remind her. Nor does it explain how our appetizers never got ordered. As for the back of house, there was only one other table when we got there and they were finishing their meals. Not counting our missing appetizers, it was quite some time before our meals came out. And each of our 3 entrees came out 10 minutes apart. That meant that one of us was still waiting for food while the others were well into their meals. The last one was way too salty (Pad See Ew shrimp, similar to Chinese shrimp chow fun). Our other dish, (Rad Na beef, similar to beef chow fun with gravy) had lots of veggies and only 2 spoonfuls of noodles. This restaurant wasn't like this before. Not sure if it's new owners/cooks or if we just got them on a bad day. We'll give it some time either way before we head back though. read more
