Yelp leads me to yet another delicious meal! I made a quick trip to Springfield and needed lunch. I wanted takeout but not drive thru fare and saw the great reviews for Salato Deli. Parking was easy along the road downtown but my app made it a bit hard to find. It shares space with le Torte Dolci bakery. I ordered the margarita sandwich (I think that's the name) on focaccia. It was delicious and didn't make a mess like others I've had elsewhere. Everything was fresh. There were several other sandwiches I would've liked to try, I may need a return trip! The pastries on display were tempting and of course I ended up with a donut for my son as well. I wish I had more time as the area is trendy with several cute shops. Again, return trip! read more

I stopped by Salato's for a quick lunch. I went for the Boss sandwich, which contained turkey, salami, balsamic vinegar and avocado. It was an unusual but not unpleasant combination. The meat and bread were fresh and the size of the sandwich was acceptable. I think I'd prefer it if the sandwich wasn't toasted, as the bread got a bit on the dry and crunchy side. I visited Salato Deli during lunch on a Friday. It was the fourth day of operation. There's a ton of variety. Meats and cheeses you won't see on any other menu in Springfield are sliced to order. The fresh baked focaccia bread is delicious. The staff knows their products and they're happy to help you choose. It takes a little time, but it's a tiny place making interesting food. Be prepared to wait a bit during the lunch rush until it's dialed in. Otherwise visit during off hours. We had the Italian and the Winter sandwiches. These sandwiches are big. We cut ours in half and if it had occurred to me while I was there I would have asked them to do it. Both were great hot from the infamous oven, but even better after I left it wrapped up in my fridge for a few hours. Springfield, don't create a no face, no friends, fake name Yelp account just to write a one star review trashing a place that you haven't even tried. It's petty and sad and we see right through you. I want to like this place more... but the thing is a sandwich that's dominated by so much bread just isn't good, no matter how nice the ingredients are. And that's the bummer... the quality of ingredients here is high. They just take a small serving of delicious, fresh cut meat and lay it out with the other ingredients on a huge slab of focaccia. I mean, the focaccia would be fine as a supporting element, but it isn't going to blow you away by itself. Bu, anyway, I didn't want focaccia with a soupçon of meat and cheese. I wanted a SANDWICH. Even with the top slice off, the amount of bread is just disproportionate to the other ingredients. If they can get the ratios fixed, then this place will be great. read more

Good food! Had the Roman' Italian sandwich which I found a little too salty, but it is made with salted cured meats. The salads were very fresh and satisfying. The sodas were made with cane sugar and pleasantly sweet. Only downside is that it is incredibly slow. It took us a half hour for two salads and a sandwich and there was only 4 other people there. read more

I wanted to love this place, went in thinking it would be awesome. I don't know how the reviews are this high. It's disgusting. Food took a long time, They were out of the sauce I wanted for my pasta, but didn't tell us until after I reicieved my food . Didn't have a chance to order something else instead. Food served on throwaway bowls, and it was lukewarm. that would have been fine if the food was good, but it wasn't. I've had cafeteria food better than my ravioli with marinara. The ravioli must have been the cheapest of the cheap frozen garbage, and the sauce tasted like a cheap watery canned one. I had high hopes for the house made meatballs, but they tasted like non seasoned, reground meatloaf. Side salad was sad. I would genuinely rather have had a frozen meal at home, especially considering how EXPENSIVE this was. The pasta bowl was actually as about the size of a frozen meal, tasted worse, but it was 9 dollars. NINE DOLLARS. read more

In my review of Jon Smith Subs, I lamented the dearth of great sandwiches in the Springfield area. With Salato Deli opening--in the old Bada-Bing's Pizza location no less--I can absolutely say that Springfield has a phenomenal, first-class sandwich joint. Everything about Salato screams artisanal, fresh, and deliberate. The spreads for the sandwiches were brilliantly crafted and obviously handmade. The meats and cheese for my "Roamin' Italian" sandwich were carved right in front of me. The pillowy ciabatta bread crisped up beautifully in the wood-fired oven leftover from Bada-Bing's. Even the chips and fountain drinks were made with care: the chips came from local purveyor Rue Farms, while the typical Coke or Pepsi fountain was replaced with that of an independent soda company (with a very tasty black cherry soda, for what it's worth). I'm honestly struggling to come up with any real criticism for Salato Deli; the service was prompt and courteous, the food is among the best I've had in months, and the price is well within what you'd pay at any other sandwich spot. Make time to get to Salato if you're in Springfield; it's worth every red cent! read more

Wow. Wow wow wow. My girlfriend and I had heard about this place from a friend who raved about it.. we figured "what the hell? It's a deli.. can't screw that up". We are skeptical by nature. This place blew us away. The bread was from the bakery next door. Their meats and cheeses carefully selected. Their sandwiches are handcrafted, individually prepared with love and care and toasted in a brick pizza oven. They even put oil and vinegar on a sub the correct way! (On the bread, not the lettuce). The people working here are kind and very knowledgable about their craft. I was nervous about my sandwich, the Roamin Italian. The pizza oven lightly charred the edges of the bread. I worried it would taste like ash. Wrong. I was wrong. That charred flavor added to the sandwich as if it was crafted by Michelin Star Chef Francis Mallmann himself. One of the best sandwiches to ever grace my mouth. I will be returning and telling everyone about this place.. or maybe not.. Is keeping this secret to myself selfish? read more

We stopped in for the first time today. I had a half Roamin' Italian, my SO had a whole Meatball. Mine was excellent, and plenty! The focaccia bread was toasted to perfection. I saw an ad for this deli on Facebook and decided to go. A small deli with a couple places for dining in and a counter for ordering and food prep. Pretty bare bones but don't be fooled. I ordered the "Inferno", which is a bit of an exaggeration considering the spiciness, but an excellent sandwich nonetheless. Fresh ingredients from the salamis, to the cheeses, and vegetables. The sandwich was toasted in a brick oven to perfection. They also offer Springfield based chips and soda. The sandwich is big enough to share so no worries about leaving hungry. The stsff was friendly and the store was clean and smelled good. I will definitely be back for more. read more

I've been by this deli so many times and finally decided to stop in. There are so many sandwich combinations to choose from; I hadn't a clue. I saw one being prepared and decided to try it: prosciutto, fresh mozzarella cheese, cucumber, avocado and pesto spread were some of the ingredients. It was fabulous. I'm from out of town and used Yelp to find a place for lunch. It led me to the Salato Deli. I ordered one of their signature sandwiches, the Roamin' Italian, and it was excellent. The focaccia melted in my mouth. I also had the soup of the day which was described as "Italian egg drop", and it too was spectacular. stumbled across this place because i noticed it was new. i would *highly* recommend anyone go here. it is a deli & also a sandwich shop. i chose to make my own, but they also had 5 premade menu options. since it is a deli, their meats and cheeses are very fresh, that also describes their other veggies & toppings as well. my favorite part though was their house made spreads. i couldn't decide on just one so i got both, the mushroom spread and sun dried tomato spread. they have a total of five to choose from, adds so much flavor. support this super yummy deli!!! read more

Have eaten here 4 times and the sandwiches are excellent. I am just finishing up a their Fall sandwich with artichoke heart spread. Really good. I had been looking forward to trying this local eatery but was highly dissatisfied. Very bland ravioli, the roamin Italian sandwich was on soggy bread and was also bland. No salt and pepper on the tables had to go up to the counter while there was a long line and ask for some. The staff was very friendly and the place was clean. It was my first time in, and I must say it was great. The meat is cut fresh and the bread is handmade. I did not have the bread, but oh my it smelled amazing.
