I have been with Dr. Shim for 11 years and have never had a bad experience. When I first was referred, I was having extreme shortness of breath and was tired all of the time. Heart tests were done and nothing was found. I went to Dr. Shim, took the sleep test and got my machine. I admit I wasn't expecting anything to change. The morning after my fist night's use EVERYTHING CHANGED! I had no more shortness of breath and no longer struggled to keep my eyes open. Dr. Shim explained my heart was working so hard at night to keep me breathing that it was exhausted. I've had no problems like that in 11 years. I highly recommend this practice. read more

At first I was happy. My CPAP worked, I had a decent mask and all was well. But the customer service is horrendous. I would request a new mask and a new CPAP machine, after several years, which I was due for, and received NO follow up. Attempts to get any kind of help were ignored and technicians would not return phone calls or follow up. I could not get a mask that fit so I eventually quit using my machine, which was a shame. Once I came for a scheduled appointment and they had no record of it. There have to be better places in Salem. read more

The VA finally found me a place with "availability" for my sleep study. I arrived to the clinic 10 minutes late even after giving myself an additional hour to get there; due to having to drive over an hour to the clinic, hitting traffic that was bumper to bumper, and then the parking lot was full upon arrival. Then I waited for someone to help me for 10 minutes at the front desk. They said, "we have a strict 7 minute policy." I visually saw the doctor shrug, not sure which one he was but very unprofessional. If you are a Veteran who struggles with sleep, DO NOT ACCEPT THIS APPOINTMENT AT THIS CLINIC. Very unprofessional, lack of empathy and understanding. Oh and this was just for the Consultation...they sent me away from a consultation that was probably a 15 minute appointment tops. read more

TLDR: If you want to have your appointments repeatedly cancelled while they refuse to provide supplies that you desperately need to sleep, then come here. Don't expect to get supplies, but do expect your insurance to get billed for them. Getting CPAP supplies from them is nearly impossible. They rarely answer their phones and don't return your calls. Between my wife and I we've left dozens of messages over the last few months without callbacks. Their text message supply order system also never yields supplies. I didn't know any better when they gave it to me, but they provided me with a dated CPAP machine that I'm stuck with it for at least 5 years. I would advise going elsewhere for your CPAP needs. Update 7/1/2025 It has become even more difficult to get CPAP supplies from them. They are always missing at least part of the order that they claim is ready for pickup. They say they will send you out the missing supplies, but never do. After failing to get me the one part I desperately need in my last several orders, they informed me that they will not provide more supplies until I have an appointment. Unfortunately, I've struggled to get an appointment because they never answer their phones or return my calls. Update 10/28/25 I had an appointment for this month, but they called to reschedule on short notice because the doctor was going to be unavailable. The next available appointment isn't until January, and they still refuse to provide supplies until after my next appointment. Update 1/6/26 I received a call a few hours before my appointment asking me to bring my CPAP machine to my appointment. This was the first request for me to bring the machine to this appointment and they already had the data from because I brought it in prior to October appointment that they cancelled, so it caught me off guard. By the time I received the call, it was too late for me to get off of work any earlier, so retrieving my CPAP caused me to be 6 minutes late for my appointment. When I arrived, I was informed of their "strict 7 minute late policy" , to which I replied "it is a good thing that I'm not 7 minutes late" and pointed to their clock which was just changing from 6 to 7 minutes after my appointment time. After arguing with the receptionist for a couple of minutes and then waiting for her to ask the provider if he would see me, I walked out the door at 8-9 minutes past my appointment with the provider refusing to see me and expecting me to reschedule. NO THANKS! I sincerely regret ever becoming a patient here and will never come back. Its worth noting that I have never been late to an appointment before and was only late because of their poor communication. Granted, some of my experience is probably retaliation for the negative review and for reporting them to my insurance company for charging for supplies they never provided, but even if you don't try to hold them accountable, you should be prepared for a terrible experience with Salem Sleep Medicine. read more

Witnessed a young man enter the clinic this morning while waiting for my husband to get done with his appointment. He was turned away for being seven minutes late to his appointment, he explained that he drove over an hour to get here and struggled with traffic and parking here. I understood this, as I had also had to park down the road because it looks like worker vehicles take up most of the spots. They were very sassy and unprofessional to his situation. After talking with my husband, he said that he experiences similar things with the clinic but he says this is the closest clinic to us, and that he would never recommend this place to people unless it was the only option. The young lady with braces at the front desk needs to be trained on customer service, and so does whatever bald male doctor that shrugged her. Very disgusted with how they treated a young veteran who obviously struggles with sleep, and even more upset that my husband doesn't enjoy his visits here because of the staff. But only comes here due to low availability from the VA. read more

I've been with Dr. Shim practically since he began his practice. I believe his overnight tests are more thorough than one I had at a previous clinic, and as a clinician Dr. Shim is proactive. This is a medical specialty in which the physician can be relatively powerless, but Dr. Shim will try new approaches, explaining the whys and the downsides. Dr. Shim is constantly tweaking his business model, which has changed dramatically over the years, and for followup visits which do not require his highpowered intervention (one is interviewed by competent technicians) the cost is minimal or nonexistent. read more

This place is horrible, after going there they did not tell me in anyway that my deductible would be 400 bucks and then surprise !!!! The equipment I was provided with my study seemed dirty and non operational, it was impossible to stay asleep with it. Dr. Shim seemed uncaring about my concerns and the equipment and prescribed a CPAP machine anyway. I was given a number to call for the CPAP machine to this day I have never received my equipment, after waiting over 3 hours on hold and 7 hours total I just gave up. I feel They absolutely do not care about your sleep problems and do not offer any type of alternative solution, like losing weight. They try to pigeon hole you into a standard treatment. Horrible experience with this company. Took forever to get the prescription and the staff is rude.

The facilities are very nice but what makes them stand-out is the high level of customer service and pleasant staff. The doctor seems very caring about my individual needs and that resonates through his staff from the receptionist to the technicians. Way more customer friendly than the next business you go to see (Norco) where they issue your cpap machine. I believe a business full of good or bad customer service comes from the top down, and Dr. Shim leads by example. A well run business and excellent customer service. read more

Dr. Hyong Shim, MD and his staff are the best in the business. Dr. Shim gives you a personal experiment. He will work hard to resolve your sleep problems. He doesn't rush your appointment; he takes his time to better understand his patients. He uses conventional and non- conventional treatments. The facilities are very nice and pretty new. I wouldn't recommend Dr. Shim to anyone who has sleep problems. read more

I cannot recommend Salem Sleep Medicine enough for those who have developed a sleep disorder. Mine most likely began several years ago and culminated into a very scary health crisis earlier this year. I met with Dr. Shim and after only a few appointments he "reset" me. Dr. Shim not only helped get my precious sleep cycle back on track but more importantly my quality of life improved almost instantly. Now I will only meet with him once a year to check in. Sleep is nothing to be taken for granted for, as I learned the hard way. Salem Sleep Medicine tremendously helped me and they can tremendously help you.
