Very disappointing on our fourth or fifth visit, which surprised the heck out of us. See my earlier positive rants. Sunday morning 11:30, not busy, many tables open (they were full when we left) but the food was sad. My scrambled eggs were chopped into a thousand little pieces, David's were browned and burnt. My sausage was underdone to where I left it, David's ham was burnt and tough and dry. The hash browns were barely done, chewy, hard to eat, the pancake yucky. The service great (we did not complain, we were on a schedule) and the toast was thick and yummy. We will be back if we are in the area (won't go out of our way due to this last trip) but maybe after they get a new cook? Oh, and they have a Chicken Fried Steak Challenge. Easy access from 99. Been here several times in the last 3 years, always had a great experience. Good selection of what I would call Classic breakfast choices which includes the Chicken Fried Steak challenge. Food Quality - Above average - Fresh ingredients, most menu items are cooked to order, exception would be the biscuits which would be cooked earlier in the day so they are ready. Food Quality - Above average to outstanding - I nor my family have ever left this venue hungry. good portion sizes and excellent value for the money. Service - Above average - very attentive. Frequent rounds through the customer base to ensure beverages are full, plates / flatware are removed / replaced as needed. All done with a cheerful attitude. Interior - Average but with some funk - all kinds of historical items on the wall tied to the local high schools, home town pride! Tables, chairs are average and will be due for a replacement in the near future. The venue is split with the smaller dining area being the area one enters through the front door. The larger area is off to the left. The smaller dining area is a little bit darker, probably because of wood paneling and the window size compared to the larger area. I ordered food from this place for the first time through Door Dash. My food was not edible. I ordered chicken fried steak, 1 biscuit with gravy and hash browns. The hash browns were the only thing I could almost eat. The chicken fried steak was so gross I took one bite and it was chewy and disgusting. The biscuit was burnt on the whole bottom. Definitely don't buy into the hype, especially about the huge CFS..ordered to share and they graciously split it it with no attitude which is awesome, but the food itself was lacking in flavor. Being that big, of course it has to cook longer which made parts of it overcooked which didn't help the already lackluster taste. This is definitely quantity over quality. I went in with two starving teenagers and a Chunky 7 year old & None of us finished our food. The pancakes weren't even good. Not sure how a diner messes up pancakes. The service was ok, but our waitress while nice, didnt check on us once even thought we were at the table nearest the register & forgot our biscuits and gravy. while she even acknowledged it herself at the end of our meal, no apology or attempt to make it right was made. I only tipped her bc she was friendly and just seemed overwhelmed as the only one trying to work as the older server lady couldn't be bothered. We didn't need the B & G if it was anything like the rest of their food, anyway. Also, saw fried bread pudding on the menu and sounded interesting, so we ordered some to go. Again, HUGE disappointment. A few chunky pieces of bread drenched in some cinnamon concoction (photo included). The more I'm writing, the more I'm wondering why I'm even giving three stars, but it really is just out of pity for our poor waitress so downgrading to two as we speak. 3 is average and this was definitely below average as I have had better experiences at Denny's. Also, just as icing on the top, the bathroom was broken and it took over 15 minutes for one of the employees to address it while they were not busy with tables.. if you've ever been here, you know this isn't the biggest place, so nothing should take that long to address. What to say about Salida's Kountry Kitchen. Well I'm confused how it has even 3 stars. I don't like giving one star unless its completely horrible, it wasn't hence the 2 stars. The Kountry Kitchen (gah I feel weird spelling country with a K) is known for their homemade bread and huge country fried steaks. Actually there is a contest for the country fried steak (I believe its 16.95) and if you eat it all you get your picture on the wall. It is about as big as a plate. I wanted to try the corned beef and hash but was saddened to find out it came from a can, no bueno I can buy that for a buck fifty at the store and make at home. So I just ended up getting eggs, bacon, hash browns and butter with a side of English muffin, I mean it was drenched in butter so bad it was dripping down my fingers. Gross, couldn't eat it. Anyway as far as our coffee went it was hardly refilled and one server even seemed agitated I asked for a refill. One of my family members even said "I dare ask her for anything I may get slapped!" She was from out of state so that to me was embarrassing that we even brought her there. That's it. I won't be back. I honestly don't know how this place is so packed other than its one of the only breakfast places in Salida. read more

Excellent little place. I love the home feeling you get. Only my second time coming and it was delicious. My boyfriend could not get enough of the chicken fried steak and biscuits n gravy, he would give em 2 thumbs and a mouthful up!! Super big plates and he ate it all! Very generous on the helpings. The waitress was very nice to us and was very helpful explaining some of the meal items we were not sure of.
