I work across the street and came in for a quick cut as a walk-in at lunch. Everyone was super professional and slide me into the schedule. I was seated a few minutes later and getting shampooed. A few years ago I lived in Chicago and found the nail salon upstairs. When I needed to get my hair and makeup done for a big work dinner I decided to try this place out and they did a fantastic job. Fast forward to now, I was coming into town for an award dinner and decided to go with what I know. I was shocked when I walked in and the owner looked at me and said "oh I remember you came in a few years ago for some big work thing right"-homie must drink ginkokaloba b/c his memory is on point! I walked over to meet my stylist and it was the same guy who did it before and he ALSO remembered me! Crazy right? Anyway Arturo (the magician) was my stylist and he did base color of a rich brown with red undertones (describing hair color is like listening to a wine sommelier where you are not sure if the end product will taste like chocolate or cherry flavored dirt with a hint of citrus) and he also trimmed my hair. At the end he did a blown out curly do that was vary Marilyn like. When he does Marilyn it looks like Monroe when I try to do it myself it looks like Manson. Finally Arturo also did my makeup and I loved it bc he used the makeup I had brought with me b/c I wanted to make sure I could touch it up later. He finished the look with airbrushing and assured me it would last all night which it absolutely did. My coworkers and fiancé all loved his work! I love this place and will likely come back every time I come to Chicago. read more

I called Salon 161 and they were very kind from the beginning. I got an appointment with Alberto Oyola, very professional, super nice and very attentive & caring. He made sure to understand what I wanted, provided recommendation, asked me questions during the process and made sure I was happy with the results. I am very pleased with the color, highlights & cut. He is GREAT, very talented man. 100% recommended. The Salon is small, cozy and clean. Last week I got my hair highlighted by Jayce. He was very thorough and it turned out fabulous!!! He even did an extra service for me to brighten my hair. I didn't feel rushed or like just another client. I love the feel of this place too. Mostly men stylists with female customers. Cute tool boxes for hair stations. Jayce def keeps the salon young and modern too! I will def go back for my next highlight. Hard to find parking though. The place next door has cheaper valet than usual. I moved to Chicago 6 months ago and I was very concerned about finding a hair stylist. Using Yelp, I decided on this salon and I have been going every month since. Charles is great! He has worked with me on changing my style (at my request) and also at my request has worked with me to get my hair light enough that my gray roots don't scream out any more. Jayce at Salon 161 is amazing!! So many of my friends have said my hair (cut & color) has never looked better! I have tried MANY salons in the city and have found my home at Salon 161. To be honest, I was skeptical when I first walked in as it seemed to have an older crowd and was concerned that I would not get a hip, stylish cut/color. But I couldn't have been more wrong. Jayce gave me & has continued to provide a wonderful experience. He listens to my goals & concerns & has helped shape my hair to what a have been wanting for YEARS! In addition, I had a Brazilian straightening treatment and it was the best I have ever had. It lasted longer than the other 4 treatments I had done previously. It was awesome! Couple more comments....pricing is beyond reasonable, especially for being downtown. Everyone is so nice...especially Jayce. He is such a sweetheart & you can tell he takes pride in his work. Dennis is hands-down the best stylist I've ever visited. When I lived out of state, I would often schedule my trips home to coincide with my hair appointments so that I could come here. I've been getting my hair highlighted and cut by Dennis for about 3-4 years now. Since I started, people have expressed surprise that my hair is highlighted at all, as it looks like the natural color. He is very thorough and does a great job. Let me start by saying Jayce is the BEST! If I could give ten stars, I would! Before I moved to Chicago, I had used the same stylist for years and was nervous about having to switch to someone new. I have really curly hair and have had issues with people cutting it in the past, so once I find someone I like, I have to stick with them. Based on other positive yelp reviews, I decided to give Salon 161 and Jayce a try. What a great decision! The salon is in a great area, just off of Michigan Avenue. It is a very clean place and is a fun, bright atmosphere. I was able to get an appointment quickly that fit into my busy schedule. The staff is all very friendly and courteous. The prices are not what you would expect to see on the Mag Mile and were more than reasonable, this coming from a graduate student on a budget. Now to the best part, JAYCE! I must say, he is the best stylist I have ever had and I would recommend him to everyone I know. He is totally open to listening to the ideas you have for your hair, but will also provide awesome advice with his professional expertise. He is able to change my color for the seasons while giving it a natural look. He cuts my hair to a perfect length with the curls. And he does the best blowout ever! I have never been less than absolutely thrilled with my cut and color when I leave. This salon is just a group of stylists that rent stations. Totally depends on who you schedule with. Cynthia is the most unprofessional hair dresser that I've ever encountered. I visited her a few times for extension services and it was a terrible experience overall. I have fine hair and she struggled to get the adhesive out of my hair despite my requests to use different products that I've had success with before. There aren't very many stylists that work with the brand of hair that I use, so I continued to see her. In my last visit, she essentially was ripping the tape out of my hair ( I could HEAR it), and when I told her that it was painful and that I didn't have this issue with other stylists.... she immediately became angry and threatened to not reinstall my hair. I became very upset because I had to leave for a trip and wouldn't have time to visit another salon beforehand. Total nightmare. I told her that if she didn't complete the service I scheduled that I would leave a bad review for her online. I wouldn't have had them removed if I knew there was risk of her losing so much control of herself that she wouldn't finish, and I feel like others should know that there is a risk of that if they choose to visit her. She started CUSSING at me and going on and on about how rude I am. I was SHOCKED. I had a trip the next morning, so I begged her to put them back in (which she begrudgingly did). Never my life have I been treated that way by a service professional. Never. She embarrassed me and frankly herself. As a client, I expect more. I will *never* visit this salon again. read more

I Had long dark hair before coming to this salon and left with dull ,over cut hair after 7 hrs of being there. No excuses! I went in for a consult since I was nervous about having anything done and was quoted a price of $110 so when my money was saved I Would treat myself after leaving there 7 hrs later when I was told it might take 3-4 they cut all my hair and charged me $210,, WHAT!! so upsetting after telling stylist about this she answered ok sorry will give you back $60 I am still waiting for this refund this was truly a hair nightmare! read more

Charles is a fantastic stylist who does it all--from cut to color. I have been a client for over ten years and despite my stubborn gray hair, he manages to take a dozen years off of my appearance. Jayce is by far the most amazing stylist I've ever had and truly an awesome person. I used to go to Jayce regularly and, since moving to LA, I miss him terribly! I'm even scheduling my other hair appointments and delaying re-highlighting in anticipation of visiting in December and going to Jayce then. I've also sent my aunt and cousin to Jayce and now they send me braggy photos whenever they go to the salon just to make me jealous (which I am). I am so upset. I went in for a blow dry before a wedding. My hair is longer and gets highlighted color so I was overdue for a dream (but aggressively trying to grow it out so always do the bare minimum in the trim). I asked for a half an inch to 3/4 an inch. Alberto kept saying it needed more and I said "No, I'm trying to grow it out". I was astonished when I saw my hair fall to the ground. He cut 3.5 inches! I understand it's his area of expertise but he should not take liberties to make decisions about my hair. That is my choice. I've called Cynthia Yosef 4 times (on different days) to schedule an appointment and got her voicemail every single time. I left 3 messages to try to book an appointment, as the answering machine recommended. She never called me back to schedule an appointment. Today she calls me to ask me to cancel the appointment and leave the salon, she said that I've arrived to my appointment 45 minutes earlier, that I have called her more than 10 times and that she wants me to leave the salon, cancel my appointment. She had me confused with another customer; I never booked an appointment, as she never called me back. She was rude to me over the phone and when I explained that I was not the person she was talking about, she started talking bad about the other customer. So unprofessional. Maybe the other customer was also Latino and we all sound the same to her... read more

I got a root color and cut here with Dennis. Overall, the experience was average. Dennis was a little rough when brushing, blow drying and cutting my hair. He didn't even show me the color he was going to apply and it turned out much darker than my current color. I am not happy with the result at all. I've been coloring my hair for over 20 years and he is by far the best colorist I've ever had. No more traumatic hair experiences! If you want gorgeous, natural looking color then you have to see Jayce. His highlighting technique is amazing...just the right amounts of highlights and lowlights to give you the most natural looking color. No more over-processed hair! I had the best experience with Jayce at Salon 161. I was a walk in and totally took a chance. My hair is fine, wavy, can get frizzy. In other words, a nightmare. Thanks to Jayce, I actually love my hair now!!! I asked him not to cut it too short and he listened. He got rid of my greys and now my hair is a beautiful natural color with blonde highlights! Super easy to style. Plus, Jayce is also fun. Lots of great stories, but doesn't talk your ear off. He's a great listener too. Very sweet man. I won't go to any other salon now. I love love love this place. I lived in Chicago until November 2008, and continued driving all the way downtown, fighting the meters for parking, and walking in rain sun or snow to get my haircut here. It's not all that dramatic, but every time I come here, I go to Jayce. He listens to what I want, understands that I want to look "different" without hacking off all my hair or dying it purple. He understands that I am a librarian, not a rock star. BUT he also understands that librarian is not all I am, and gives me a cut that can be demure during the day, and HOT at night =) I love this place, and look forward to going back! His cuts are great, but it's his color that keeps me coming back! I really didn't want to get highlights until I was 30 (this was at 26), he gave me the confidence that he would make it rocking by the time I was 27 (without forcing it or talking me into it, lol).
