Jonathan always does a great job, this time was a drastic change (cut 13 inches off to donate) and I can always trust him with my hair. Since the salon is multiple floors it's a lot bigger than it looks from outside. I don't color my hair so I can't speak to that part of the salon, but if the rest of the staff are as good at what they do then you really can't go wrong with anyone here. I've been getting my hair cut at the same salon for almost 35 years, so following my stylist to Maxine was kind of a big deal. But I'm very glad I did. read more

I called this salon and explained my hair emergency and they not only were able to get me in that same day, but they got it done incredibly quick so I wasn't late for my event. What happened to the services at this salon? I am a long time customer of both color and cutting. The color is applied as usual then rinsed off. Leaving globs of dye either in my hair or in my ears. Parts of my hair sections were not effectively covered by the color. The roots appear lighter than the ends. The staff have always been friendly but the services are not well managed. I was excited to try someone new and I made a huge mistake meeting with Robert. I said I wanted my grays covered at the front and brighter highlights but as balyage. I showed an old photo which showed clear dimension of colour at the lengths. I was told highlights and balyage would be done and of course the gray would go. I wasn't asked how many or what look but as the colorist describes his style as soft natural highlights I didn't think to query the amount of product being used. I was asked where my part was and I said I float between both sides. I didn't see a mirror until half my head had foils / wrap on and realised that he was going to town on the amount of color,but with half a head in, what do I say?! At the end of the foils process, the heat lamp was put on without any hair being looked at to see how they were lifting and was then re-set for further time, again without any hair being looked at. I remember thinking this was unusual But again I thought, the guy has done this for decades. What do I know? I ended up with possibly the worst color I have ever had - practically solid at the length and chunky stripes. The Maxine salon lighting is very different to outside and the blo-out was curled so difficult for me to see the full color however I knew my greys were covered and I was pleased about that, but as soon as I got into my car I became concerned. I thought my hair looked brassy orange but assumed it was the window tint. Plus a base color was used and maybe it needed a couple of washes to calm down. However returning home I was absolutely horrified to see the results. It also made me realise why the shampoo had been so aggressive! She could clearly see what had happened. She absolutely should have said something to him. Sat in traffic and time to study my hair closer I knew I was in trouble and immediately made an appt the next day with my usual guy who I really like but he could not get the greys covered (which led me to look for someone else) I booked in for an emergency 30 min appt for a toner to calm the brass down and then he also added root smudge to soften the actual hard lines some of the highlights had. I have to miss important meetings to be able to go back in 2 days for another appointment to add lowlights to break up the 90's stripes plus work out how to deal with how the highlights and balayage have lifted at different rates and are literally mottled in areas. The splitting is bad and I'm pretty nervous of how it's going to look at the end of this week. A good cut will help a little. I'm truly perplexed. The salon has a great vibe, the receptionist is wonderful and I've had great success with a cut there. How was I let out of the salon looking like this? I'm over 50 years old and easy going and would have happily stayed longer to get the color rectified. I know I can call and get Maxine's to adjust but I'm just so upset about my experience that I can't step foot in there again. It's only hair of course but having spent $hundreds and hours of my time there how on earth do I trust the provider to rectify this? I want to hope this is a one off, but the process seemed to be just that - a process. Without care and attention. Creatives are passionate about what they do. Maybe the passion has gone. I had an appointment booked with a specific stylist because I liked her balayages however when I arrived I was handed off to someone else I guess because she was on vacation. I wish someone would have been considerate of my time and communicated that she wouldn't be in that day. Anyway I had waited weeks to get in to get my hair colored so I went with it. We discussed what I wanted and I thought we were on the same page but I ended up getting something completely different. The soft blonde tones in a balayage with my brown roots that I asked for turned into bright brassy blonde streaks all the way up to my roots that does not look like a balayage at all. Maybe I would love this look if I was a 13 year old girl but I'm a professional and I feel embarrassed. I really feel like my entire appointment was an afterthought and I don't know if that's because I am a new customer but I'm not a guinea pig I'm a paying customer who even tipped afterwards because I also work in the service industry and know how important someone's time is. I lied and said I liked it because honestly after 4 hours and $500 later with a lot of regret I just want to be left alone. My impression of this place is that their focus is on quantity over quality and that was evident when my colorist was running between three people. I have paid half the price for a much better dye job in a much shorter amount of time at other places. I'm just disappointed because my hair is important and I specifically searched for the best salon in Chicago and chose the person with the best balayage skills for my desired look and none of that was taken into consideration. read more

Let me just preface that I wanted to like this salon, and I don't like leaving poor reviews. My hair isn't that complicated and colors well. I am blonde and have blonde highlights. I was looking for a salon closer to home because I've been going all the way north to boys town. I am willing to pay for my hair. I asked for highlights and to blend my roots. I showed her pictures and made it clear I did not want it darker multiple times. I asked in the middle of her going, "why does it look dark? I def don't want that - will it lighten?" She assured me yes. I sat there for 3+ hours to have my hair be darkened, which is the opposite of what I wanted and I don't think I could have been more clear. I was not happy and told her. She tried to lighten it for me with an "oil treatment," which is why I am giving 2 stars instead of 1. Furthermore, my scalp is red and very very irritated. I'm not sure if it's the actual product used to color or if it was left on too long. I should have said something about that. read more

Most recently, I had an unfortunate string of small miscommunications with the front desk staff regarding a new scheduling policy that ultimately led to a visit where I left dissatisfied with the service (but not the cut!). When the manager Tracey got wind if this, she was quick to reach out to apologize, explain, and also use this as a learning experience. This was for a maintenance service (no raw materials) that my regular stylist performs in 20 minutes for $40. Came in for the Kérastase in salon treatment (Fusio dose). After reading on the Kérastase website about this treatment, I had certain expectations of what it was going to be like but I was disappointed. The product itself is GREAT, fabulous really, but I didn't like the salon. I had Jenna as a stylist. You could tell she knew what she was doing but she really seemed like she didn't want to be there and didn't really put in effort. She didn't take the time to help me choose what Kérastase treatment was best, she just asked me two questions then went and chose it herself and didn't tell me what or why she had chose what she did. She gave me a pretty mediocre blowout which I was disappointed in considering a blowout is $55 here. It could be worth it if it was good, but it was truly expensive for something I could do way better at home. I was surprised at the lack of customer service or enthusiasm considering I had never been here before. I was really hoping to like this place as I live a block away. I wish I did more research before coming here. The Fusio dose treatment is $44 here. A couple blocks away at blowtique it's $25. Safe to say I'll be going there next month instead. read more

I work in the neighborhood and needed a quick blow dry for a presentation I was giving later that day. She did such a nice job she is now my "go to" person when in need of some "hair help". She took the time to hear what I wanted and then quickly got me looking like a million bucks! The salon is trendy and spotless but the most important asset is the friendliness of the staff. The front desk team never fails to take my coat and properly direct me and the wait is never very long for my appointment. $55 for a blow dry? Yep. It's a little more than other places. I've frequented at least a dozen salons in Chicago, and Maxine is my favorite. The vibe here is very positive. The staff at the front desk is friendly and professional. They don't hustle me to buy the hair care products on display. The salon is clean. And there's usually street parking a few blocks west of the salon (although valet is available). The only thing that could be improved are the shampoo chairs, which are uncomfortable when leaning back. But the main reason I come here is my stylist Shelly Aguirre. My hair looks amazing! Which was not the case the first time I sat in her chair three years ago. I'd just been given one of the worst haircuts of my life at another salon. It was a layered mess (I'd asked for a bob). Since cutting it short wasn't an option (for me), we agreed to a strategy for growing out the layers. I'm not sure how she did it, but my hair was vastly improved after just one visit. And within six months, I had the bob of my dreams. Shelly is creative and really knows how to cut hair. She has a great personality. I have really thick asian hair but Severn knows how to get in there and chop it all off making my hair perfect. I wanted layers and so I got layers!! I had a great hairstylist back in CA and was so afraid I wouldnt be able to find anyone in Chicago that could do what she did, but then I found Severn. My new fav hair salon! I found Maxine when I visited for a Birchbox + Kerastase braid event in June and Cliff gave me the most fantastic crown braid I've ever seen-seriously, it was damn good. I also got to meet Maxine that night and she was just too cute, I knew I had to return! From the event I received 25% off my next service so I scheduled an appointment right away for a blow-out/style for my engagement pictures. I came back on a Saturday afternoon and the salon was packed-so much going on, I loved it! Right in the heart of the Gold Coast/River North, Maxine is just the perfect location to make you feel like you're right in the middle of everything going on in the city. The salon is white, bright, and modern and you're greeted by a wall of Kerastase and Shu Umera products and incredibly friendly and helpful staff. They have water, coffee, beer, and champagne to sip on while you wait (or while you're being pampered). In short, I'm pretty much in love with the salon! As if a fab salon wasn't enough-Cliff made my hair look so fantastic I told him I needed him to just live in my bathroom so he can give me blow outs everyday! He is super friendly and even explained what he was doing so I could try and replicate it at home (which will never, ever happen-he's too good). My hair lasted through engagement pictures that day and through my engagement party that night and everyone gave me compliments on how great it looked. It took me a while to find the perfect fit after moving to Chicago several years ago. I finally found my way to Maxine's and they're THE best. I go to Jasen for color. He's great. Super friendly and fun to chat with. And he has some serious talent as a colorist. There are a lot of articles about him that say he's the King of red hair. Well, that's probably true, but I have blonde/brunette balayage and he's a rock star in that department as well. For spectacular cuts, Evan can not be beat. And he's the only stylist I've ever gone to who gives me some excellent new "how-to" tip every time I see him. My partner stopped in once and couldn't get over how meticulous he was. I've never loved my hair more. These two will listen to what you want, and have superb input to go with it!! They're not inexpensive (but probably competitive for Chicago) but ABSOLUTELY worth every penny! Love it!! read more

I had a very pleasant experience at the salon, and good conversation with my very friendly stylist Jenna, but, sadly, the haircut left much to be desired. I'd asked for long layers, something the website said she specialized in. Instead the bottom of my hair was cut in a blocky way - kind of like someone had taken a pair of garden shears to it. There was a little bit of layering but overall the effect was that of a long bob, instead of the graded, subtle differences in length, and lightness at the ends that make a good long layered cut. It's disappointing not only because the cut was expensive - $100 + tip - but because I spent a fair amount of time explaining what I wanted and she indicated that she'd clearly understood. For being on Rush Street, I don't think this salon is at all over-the-top. The service is top notch but I have never once felt intimidated (even walking in on a wet day in my three-year-old Tory Burch flats, now relegated to commuting ranks). I couldn't be happier with Josie, my stylist. She actually listened to what I wanted and gave me a sophisticated do. This is not an easy task, as my hair is thick and I either walk out looking like a) Axl Rose with lots of layers or b) a little kid with a quasi-bowl cut. I checked this place out on a weekday morning. I was able to get an appointment just a few days before. The place was packed with what seemed like regular customers. I arrived on time and the staff took my coat and set me up with my hair dresser, Ryan. He was kind and listened to what I wanted and then went on to offer me coffee or tea, which was much appreciated. He got it for me while the staff got me shampooed. Although prices are a bit steep for a wash and blowdry ($80), the level of service is superb. The two best stylists for easily handling naturally curly hair are Qiana and Michelle. Both of these ladies are superb at styling, cutting, keratin treatments, special occasion up-dos and fixing bad jobs by stylists form other salons. And should you need another type of service, you're in great hands: Waxing see Jamie Nails see Kerri Make-up see Michelle..yes, she kicks butt at that too...just look at her makeup on herself! Stunning! Color see Robert Holding down the front desk are Ricky, Carlos and Tracy...some of the funniest, most personable people you'll ever meet. Treat them right and you're sure to get that last minute appointment when you need it. Above all, Maxine's carries the best product line-up your hair will ever experience - Shu Uemura and Kerastase. Trust me, you'll never want drug store again, especially if you have naturally curly hair.
