My first experience here was a good one. I really decided to get color at the last minute. I usually go somewhere else for color and I wanted my hair straightened quickly. After reading the reviews about the owner's focus on healthy hair, I decided to take the plunge with color. I also decided to go to the salon because the owner responded to my yelp messages within 5 minutes and took her time explaining the straightening process. She answered all of my questions. The only upgrade for me would be to know which stylist will be working on my hair. It's walk-in only except Sundays, so not sure if you can choose who to work on your hair. I'm from nyc and I've ALSO went to the domincan hair salons to get my hair washed and set ( we don't call it shampoo in NYC) so when I moved to MD to took me a while to find a salon. My issue with a lot of the salons in MD, is that they have to blow your hair out then Flat iron it to get it straight... well not HERE!!! They did an amazing job on my wash and set!!! I have natural 4C hair and when I left, my hair was pressed to the GODS!!! ( I would post a picture but it's wrapped) I will definitely be returning and I've already referred about 10 people I know!!! I have had my hair cut,colored,and treated here and each time I left I was more than pleased. The staff is one a kind. Yeya was excellent washing my hair but really didn't greet me or say two words to me. Her services made up for the lack of friendliness/communication. Now to blow-out. My hair is natural. I had come here before for a roller set, before they acquired some new staff. So early this morning I drag myself out of bed for a length check, ie a roller set. I get to Salon 809, checking in was relatively easy, she didn't like that I wasn't getting any deep conditioning though. I made it to the back for the wash the lady ripped through my hair without holding the root, but I didn't complain. Finally when I'm done with the wash I sit in the chair for the rollers, a new lady that wasn't there the last time I went basically told me she wasn't putting rollers in my hair because it would be too much work. Fine if you don't want to do what I asked I'll leave, what really got me ticked is they expected me to pay for the washing and ripping through my hair. Tuh please learn some costumer service salon 809. If McDonald's gave her a bun and no burger I bet you she wouldn't pay for it. Great experience. I was a walk-in on Saturday and they immediately took me to the back to get my hair washed. It wasn't one of those salons where they wet your hair and then make you wait forever and now you're trapped because your hair is wet. They deep conditioned my hair, rolled me up and put me under the dryer quickly. The place was beautiful, people were very friendly and the vibe was authentic. After 11a, clients came pouring in, so I'm glad I beat the rush. I was so pleased to see other women with long, mixed textured hair, leaving with their hair looking fantastic. Jeimy, My intial review raved about your salon, and MY own experience. This poor review is in regards to my mother's experience, in which, you refused to refund my mother. She never paid card at your salon, she paid cash. She never called her bank to file any chargeback because she did not pay card. You refused to refund her, and we accepted this. We didn't take you to court, or make any further attempts to get monies paid back, we simply left a negative review, and vowed to never ever patronize your establishment again. As for myself, I paid with cash 9/10 when I was serviced at your salon, mainly for the $25 special you had offered. I had an issue with the way you conducted business with me, as far as dishonoring my refund request that was granted by you, following my mother's bad experience. I love going there. The music and the stylist are sweet. I normally wear my natural curls and I get my hair straightened once every year. I go to them each time because I haven't gotten heat damage from them. I'm giving them 4 stars because while I was in there I saw a woman with natural hair get her ends trim and I know she wanted her natural hair styled. I could tell the stylist didn't really know what to do with the woman's natural hair. Therefore, the stylist let the lady leave without her hair actually styled. I have been here a couple of time just for a blow out and every time I am more than pleased with the results. The last time I went In I wanted a drastic change of color from black to blonde in ombré. The stylist suggested that I not go so light right away because it would damage my hair so she did some highlights and they came out great and no damage to my hair. I wanted to love this salon really bad. The customer service is not at the top of their priority list, just money and mediocre work. I got Brazilian knots with hair I purchased directly from the salon. Two days later my hair was completely tangled so I went to the salon in hopes that they could remedy the situation. Not only did the owner (who completed my install) not acknowledge me or my problem, she made sure that I paid full price for a wash and blow out. They even had mention of paying EXTRA to detangle. The owner had not one care or concern about my issue or the fact that I paid almost $1000 to purchase hair and have the install complete. I understand as a business owner myself that at times you can't please everyone but she offered NO accommodation and she didn't even take the time out to come speak with me directly to figure out what possibly could be done. I have been to several Dominican salons but this owner is very impersonable, lacks customer service skills, and lacks the ability to problem solve after you've spent your hard earned money at her salon. I will say however; the employees are very friendly and quick. If you value your money and time save it and go somewhere else that prides themselves in superior customer service, character and accountability. I have been a client of this salon for almost a year. The inside is elegant but the staff does not act accordingly to the elegance of this salon. Most days the overall customer service is reasonable . However As of today. I wouldn't recommend anyone to come in to be seen here. I am born Dominican native and raised in USA. Angela told her they had decide I should get a different deep conditioner that I usually do not get and thought I appreciate the recommendation. I still have the right to decide whether if I want to get it or not. After all I am a paying customer!!! I' m extremely disappointed of how everything was handled. Beautiful and clean salon. I came on Wednesday for the $25 wet set special and a deep conditioning. I walked in at 12:00 and was pleasantly greeted. By 12:05 I had my ticket after choosing between the deep conditioning and oil treatment shots. I will try a treatment shot on my next visit. The place was full. There were 2 ladies getting their hair washed, 2 waiting to have hair taking down from rollers, 3 under the dyer and 2 ladies getting their hair straightened. So, I thought this was going to take long. I waited 10 minutes to get my hair washed. Yeya washed my hair and did a good job. I was under the dryer by 12:50. I like the ears protectors they use because it gives you full coverage and I didn't have any discomfort under the dryer. While under the dryer the receptionist asked if I would like something cold cup of water. Great costumer service! I was under the dryer for 45mins. Then I went directly to a stylist chair where my hair was blow dried and curled. The young lady did not murder my scalp with the blow dryer like a lot of Dominican salons. I was out by 2:00. I always get a hot oil treatment & deep condition. I love the variety of oils they offer & how you're able to choose the oil based on which one will be most beneficial to you. One word RUN! I went to this salon a few months back and let's just say I am completely bald now( well I have 2 inches of hair on my head). I asked for my hair to be blow dried and my ends trimmed, that was it. After my hair was washed it was already a completely different texture! She blew my hair out with so much heat that my scalp bled. I immediately asked her to stop after the blow dry. She wanted to add more heat and flat iron it!!!!! Needless to say, my hair was severely heat damaged and falling out everywhere. I just did a big chop one year before going to that salon so now I have to start all the way over. If you have 4c hair or you want to keep your natural curl pattern don't even step foot in this place. I have never been so devastated after leaving a salon. I will NEVER go back and I urge you not to either. So you think harassing people who have a bad experience at your business is the proper way of handling it? Then you are a sad individual. This is my second visit to this salon and my experience was mediocre this time, as opposed to fabulous the first time. When I entered the door around 5:15 pm on 12/6/16, I met the receptionist at the front counter. I don't recall her greeting me when I entered and that's very important to me as a customer serivce businesswoman. Needless to say, she gave me a small paper but didn't jot down the items that I mentioned. When I tried to explain I wanted my hair pincurled, she ushered me to the back. The woman at the shampoo bowl said nothing and just started washing. Even if you don't know English, "hi" is a universal phrase to say at a salon in a black part of town. She started with cold water and I motioned with my hand saying it was cold. She then switched to hot water and it was hotter than it needed to be. She continued and then began detangling. Now I'm not tender headed at all, but when you rake a comb thru someone's head, look for subtle signals from the customer like my neck flinching or my hand going up. I had to stop her and said too hard. She slowed down a bit and then kept raking. My hair is fine and I'm an older woman, so I need all the hair I can keep at this point. Next, she took me for rolling and I asked her a question and she couldn't answer because of the language barrier. The receptionist had to respond. She then took me to the dryer with no hand gestures telling me where and I sat under it for some minutes. Afterwards another woman parted my hair and began blowdrying it. No other questions posed to me about anything else. I told her I wanted it pincurled and she rolled in these tiny pin curls. I should've stopped her and had her to do it again in giant curls - but I didn't. I paid my bill, tipped and went home. When I woke up this morning, it looked nothing like what I wanted it to be. It was flyaway, tightly curled to my head and my hair looked awful. I ended up re-washing my hair and even canceled a morning appointment because of my hair's appearance. I wasn't happy at all with the result. Here are my suggestions to improve upon this experience for any customer: 1) Know some basic words in English - talking in Spanish the entire time around your customer is not good. I believe it's rude and it doesn't display any effort on the part of the person to engage with the client. I'd rather you attempt to converse with me in broken English then ignore me and talk around me in Spanish. 2) Know basic hair requests in English or have a picture card nearby - if you're unaware of what a client wants, a picture will help or a list of phrases in English will help. Don't leave the client out there. 3) Stop and ask what I want - don't assume. 4) Speak to every potential client in English when they enter your door - this is so important. Don't wait for the client to say something, be proactive. Besides the not-so-good experience, the price was very reasonable. I only spent $45 (including tips). The salon itself is clean Moral of the story: if you don't have a regular stylist who knows your hair and works with your tastes, you're taking a chance getting your hair done right. I've already decided to cough up the money and get my hair done right without taking any more chances. As a customer service coach/trainer, people are willing to pay more for the customer experience itself and not just the service or product. read more

Proceed with caution. I had Brazilian knots installed at Salon 809. Unfortunately the quality of the hair was very poor. After the install I washed my hair at home 1 week later and the hair smelled horrible. I washed the hair 5x's afterwards and the hair smell did not get any better. Also please be sure to confirm a final price with the salon. Before I arrived I was quoted $400. When I was on-site it went up to $580(after I selected the hair). After my hair was installed by the owner, she left and had someone else style my hair (also the owner was on FaceTime the entire time she worked on my hair) . Upon paying the price went up to $800. That price did not include the $200 deposit that was provided to book the appointment. A month later I had the knots taken out by a true Brazilian knot professional. The other Brazilian Knot professional advised me that the hair was indeed poor quality. Also the knots were only place half way up my scalp which made the style look unnatural. The salon was clean but they can do a better job with social distancing. Hello, this is a review for all my girls with 3b-4c hair. I visited this salon because I moved here from NYC. I have had my hair done at Dominican salons for 10 years or more. When I arrived, I was given a ticket and then I walked to the back to get my hair done and that's when I read the ticket. I initially asked for a roller-set blowout. When I looked down at my ticket, it said blow-dry and flat iron. I walked back to the front to ask her why did she add a flatiron. She said that's what you needed... I explained that I did not want my hair bone straight. She said that we don't do rollerset on your type of hair. (I was confused - I've been getting my hair done like this for years). I explained that to her and she gave me a nasty and condescening look - and said no, you NEED it. I was really taken back. I let her know that all I wanted was the rollerset ... after going back and forth - she did it reluntantly. For one, my texture is not that tight. From there, I was told - while they were blowdrying my hair that I should blow-dry my hair more often to loosen the curl. Then when I go to pay, she charged me an extra $15 for density of my hair without informing me ahead of time. I asked her why did she do that... she said, she did not want me to be offended and they usually don't tell people beforehand for that reason. **Um...what in the world????** She said well, I am going to note your account for the next visit... Me: Thank you but, I am not coming back. --- So I share this to prevent the feelings of embarrassment for being a Black woman with natural hair. Salon 809 is everything. I had been looking for a good Dominican Salon for a while since I moved to Hillcrest DC. I am very big on service, clean establishments, and good products. Salon 809 is a clean salon that gets you in and out fast! The organic products are great, everyone working is attentive, and I was able to get serviced in under 2 hours. My stylist was great! Before she blew my hair out she took time to analyze my hair and she made some recommendations as to what hair treatment would be best for my next service. She made some helpful suggestions on how to style and what to use during the week to help with caring for my hair since I exercise daily. She styled my hair quickly and did not burn my scalp. I had big chopped months prior and it had been a while since I had my hair straightened. The staff at my old salon changes very often, so I figured I would try something new in order to find a new salon home. I saw the amazing reviews and decided to give this place a try! I came here and got a blow-out and I left very pleased. Initially, there was a miscommunication with the woman who was shampooing my hair. However, I addressed my concern with Jeimy and she made sure that I was 100% comfortable with my experience there. My hair came out very soft, straight and manageable. Jeimy truly cares about her business, her employees AND her clients! Also, I would like to add that this salon is very involved in the community! That is unheard of and absolutely amazing! I went yesterday after work because my regular stylist couldn't fit me in. It is very clean and the staff was very friendly and efficient. I was offered something to drink and I chose sweet white wine while waiting my turn to get my hair washed. I got my hair deep conditioned for free because I checked in to their location for the first time on Yelp. They honored my coupon even though I was having problems retrieving it from my phone. My hair was then blow dried and curled and I love it because it is so silky and pretty. I paid $55 because I have natural hair. It would have been $65 if I didn't have the deep conditioning coupon. read more

I have been going here on and off for the past 2 years. I say on and off only because I travel a lot for work and have moved around. But when I'm in the area, this is my go to. One thing I need to add to my initial review is that it seems like the service has gone down. On the last few Sundays I've visited, it has taken them over an hour, usually 90 min to actually sit me at the wash bowl. NO CUSTOMER SHOULD WAIT 90 min to get their hair washed! This is ridiculous. I come in at noon, I should be out and able to enjoy the rest of my day by 3 pm. Beyond that, what's hilarious is that on any given day, for a wash and set you at least sit under the dryer for an hour, so your hair is already dry by the time they do the straightening. Well they took 90 min to get to washing my hair and then I guess looked at the clock, saw it was 15 min to 3 pm (closing time on Sunday) and decided to take me out the dryer, even though I had only been sitting under it for 30 min. It didn't seem like anyone was concerned about moving fast when I showed up at noon, but once it was 15 min to close everyone wanted to move fast. The owner is very nice and professional, so I'm hoping and have faith she'll address this issue. But if not, I'll have to find a new Dominican salon to support because 90 min wait times just to get my hair washed is excessive! read more
