Michelle not only recognizes my various curl types, but cuts each accordingly, layer by layer! When I first came to see Michelle for her customized curly experience, I was so nervous! Curly cuts don't come cheap!!! And admittedly, I wasn't totally convinced that a white woman in South OC could deliver...but after years of bad haircuts, I was recovering from layers cut incorrectly, and decided it was time to commit to fixing it with a curly cut. Michelle genuinely blew me away with her work and I could SEE it was worth it! By taking the time to notice the different curl patterns throughout my hair, cutting with a purpose of fixing the damage, and hand curling each of my tired layers, I finally got a haircut that left me with an authentic BIG smile! From that moment it was decided, and everyone has seen the change in my hair since! My hair is so much happier and healthier now that I've been seeing Michelle for the past 11 months! I admittedly don't even go on a consistent schedule, just when I feel when things need a trim, but the difference is OBVIOUS. TLDR: Michelle is incredible! She is the best thing that happened to my curls in decades! With her cut and techniques I consistently still have amazing curls from day 1 to day 5 (and that once included a day at an amusement park with rollercoasters on day 4)! I will definitely be going back and I cannot recommend her enough for anyone with curls whether you are new to being a curly girl or a longterm curly veteran! I guarantee you will learn something from her! Longer version: I've followed various curly girl methods for over 20 years and have been getting curly hair cuts for just as long. If there is a wash/style/refresh method of doing hair or a curly product I have probably tried it at some point. That said, new things come out and I love learning so every few years I'll try a different stylist just to see if they teach me new techniques I don't know. Michelle blew me away! Not only did she give me a phenomenal hair cut with great layers but she showed me her techniques and products. I had been introduced to Innersense before and wasn't really blown away but Michelle did a great job explaining the products and why they are cleaner/easier to use with less heavy oils than some other curly products. In the past, I have gotten good curl definition but usually have pretty significant frizz by day 3-4 but with Michelle's methods I have almost no frizz or halo at day 5, despite still having decent volume and amazing definition. Not only that but I had to do a wash/style day during a work trip and only needed half the amount of product I previously used which is HUGE for me since I almost always travel with only carry-ons. The products really are cleaner/easier to use than anything I have tried. I have also always struggled with refreshing my curls between wash days, but she went over her technique with me and I am now able to refresh my hair easily without it coming out stringy/greasy or wet enough that I felt like I should just do another wash day. Plus she pointed out a line of damage from where I was always ponytails/pinappling my curls and so now I am being more intentional about changing up my implements for putting my hair up. Her attention to detail is phenomenal, and I love that she still attends continuous education to constantly improve herself. She is definitely my new stylist for the foreseeable future and I am so incredibly glad I decided to try her! read more

I was really looking forward to getting my hair cut at Salon Aficionado, however, I had a negative experience at my consultation back in June with Michelle. I came into the salon to speak with Michelle about ideas for my hair cut, and that day my hair was more curly at the top of my head and looser curls/wavy toward the mid to end sections of my hair. Right away she started making assumptions about why my hair was like that saying things like "do you have cancer?" "Were you pregnant?" "Did you have a baby?" "Usually with two curl patterns like this you see it in people with PCOS." All of which I told her was not true. I tried to explain how my hair is including how I style it but she insisted upon her assumptions of why my hair was like that. Rather than approach from a place of curiosity she automatically assumed and I felt judged. Michelle also mentioned to me she has a type A personality for whatever reason. Not sure if toward the end of our conversation she realized what she said and was trying to justify why she said those things.
