Some background (you can decide the relevancy): I have very thick, very curly hair and I like my curls to have kind of a wild-ish, uncontrollable look. Also... I gave myself bangs the week before my appointment. The lowdown: I scheduled an appointment for a Ouidad cut with Robert. I asked for extra time because of the amount of hair that I have. It usually takes me 3-4 hours for a cut and style that I can walk out of the salon with. Less time, and I usually look like a wet poodle. Robert was so friendly and easy to talk to (I'm not usually very chatty, especially with my hair stylists), and he quickly put me at ease. He listened to what I was looking for and made suggestions until we came to an agreement. I thought I might get a mild scolding for cutting my own bangs, but he was very kind and told me that I actually did a pretty good job, and I don't think he was lying. (I had watched a few YouTube tutorials before I did the deed) I would like to point out that this was not what I have come to know as a typical Ouidad cut. And he was done in about an hour. That threw me for a huge loop and I think if he had used the carve and slice method, it would've taken much longer, like usual. BUT... I need to stress it was still a good cut for curly hair. It just didn't have the shape I prefer, and I couldn't really tell until I was able to style it myself the next day. I included pics from right after the cut and from the next day to show that it still looked really good, but I also uploaded one from just after my last Ouidad cut so you can see the difference. Obviously, a major difference is the lack of bangs, but there's overall less bulk because of the carve and slice method. I will likely go back at least once more because I'd like to ask him to use the carve and slice technique and see how it goes from there. read more

I don't normally stray from my regular hairstylists, but decided to buy a groupon for a haircut with partial highlights and added bowl of color. I was tempted by the price, but absolutely pleased by the look. I booked my appointment with Maddison. I showed up and loved the location and salon. Very comfortable and busy. Maddison was great, sweet and very talented at her job. We actually hugged after my hair-do, because at this point - she's my go to girl. So she cut several inches of hair off, which I needed to start fresh. I got highlights throughout and very fine. Overall brighter and natural looking color. I don't have time for touch-ups, so I have to get color that blends as it grows too. Picky much? Maybe, but not for a talented stylist like Maddison. As you can see from my recent photo feed, my hair still looks good. I don't get my hair done a lot, but when I do - it takes hours and is so expensive. I often My hair took less than 2 hours and cost about 1/2 of what I've paid in the past. I know that was a "deal", but it got me in the door and hope to see Maddison again. I have curly hair and was a strong believer in the Ouidad method of curly haircuts that I had gotten in the past starting over 20 years ago in their NY salon. Those cuts transformed my curls from a frizzy mess to one of soft, shapely curls. When one of the first Ouidad certified hair stylists opened up shop in No. CA I was ecstatic. The cuts were good but not as good the ones I had gotten in the past. Over time, more CA stylists got certified in Ouidad cuts, but they all seemed to move away from the traditional Ouidad "carve and slice" method to modify to their own hybrid way of doing curly cuts. After a while, I stopped letting my hair go curly and have been straightening it for years. I wanted to have the choice to go curly or straight, so last year I went to another stylist who is very popular with people with curly hair and was Ouidad trained. I asked in advance if she used the carve and slice method, but she said she incorporates some of that but also has modified it to her own way of cutting. I thought it was a better cut for my curls than I had gotten from regular stylists, but it wasn't nearly as good as a Ouidad cut for releasing my curls. It was also very expensive. I ended up rarely wearing my hair curly again. Recently, I have been wanting to try going curly again. I found Salon Cartier mentioned as having Ouidad trained stylists in some Nextdoor posts and called them to inquire. Robert, one of the owners, took the time to talk to me about his method and told me that while he does not do a 100% carve and slice method, he described his process and it sounded like he knew what he was doing. I was lucky that he had a cancellation that day, so I booked the appointment. Robert talked to me about my hair, color, texture and products. It was clear he knew what he was doing. While it wasn't a true Ouidad cut, I am very happy with the results. I was able to get similar results as in the salon the next time I did my hair. I thought his price was fair and am loving the bounce that is back in my curls. I will definitely go back for another cut and recommend him to anyone who is struggling with their curls. read more

Not only did my stylist, Maddison, give me an amazing haircut, she was also very helpful giving me advice about my curls and gave very nice suggestions while cutting my hair. I did buy a Groupon voucher and I had the worse experience trying to get an appointment I had to reschedule 3 times with Madison and wait for weeks to get a new appointment!! While the staff at this salon were all very welcoming, my haircut and color by Brooke was the worst I've ever had. I literally cringed when I finally saw my hair in good light. It has been a few weeks now and I've been swamped with work. I will need to find another salon to correct the color job on my hair and see what cut we can do to make it style well again. I've been going to Salon Cartier for over five years and it's a hidden gem of the East Bay. The salon is spacious, beautiful inside and the staff always friendly. In particular, I see Alanna. She's a pro with my thick curly hair and has managed to give me the locks I always wanted to have, but could never seem to achieve. Beyond her cuts, as a colorist she can't be beat. I have been going to Deanna Smith for a while for my hair cut and style needs. A little over a year ago, I actually started to lose quite a bit of hair due to stress, age, and dietary changes- she helped cut and style it in a way that made the hair loss less obvious. It was a very easy decision for me to ask her to do my hair for my wedding. I had two practice sessions with her to explore styles that worked best with my look. I showed her my dress and jewelery and discussed style concepts with her. We decided that I should grow out my hair so we have more to work with the day of the wedding. She was so patient with me and helpful throughout the entire process. On the day of my wedding, she arrived right on time at my bridal cottage. I was going through a bit of stress (as brides often do) and she was so amazing for me- her calming energy helped me shift my focus to getting ready and looking/feeling beautiful. I can't thank her enough for that emotional support! She did my hair in a very timely manner- small curls perfectly placed in front and back, and a clip holding up my hair on the side. It was a perfect, full look - and it was easy to take my veil in and out. The hair stayed perfect the entire night, despite the heat and hot weather. It probably helped that I didn't touch it at all, as she requested. I also need to mention that her price for the whole day was extremely reasonable considering how far she had to travel. I am also always pleased with the price for cut and style at Salon Cartier. My sister had her hair done and really enjoyed getting to know Deanna- she also loved her hair style, which went perfectly with her burgundy strapless taffetta matron of honor dress. I have now relocated across the country and can no longer see Deanna on a regular basis for my hair cut and style- I will certainly miss her, and I hope I can find someone half as professional, knowledgeable, and kind-hearted as she. My stylist, Meta Griffin, is fabulous. I cannot say enough good things about her. My style tends to be on the edgier side. I always come in with new ideas, colors, and cuts. She listens to my ideas, uses photos I have brought in for reference and then masterfully creates hairstyles and coloring that match my style, hair type and face shape. Robert's wife (?) offered to recut my hair but I was skeptical given the lack of quality the other co-owner provided. I've been ruminating since the first cut. I've been going to Brittany for over a year now. I have had various different hairstyles. Last year I did a balayage with pink and purple. After that I just did highlights throughout my hair. This year I've toned it down a bit and just done some glazes to help make my hair healthy again. I have thin but wavy hair which is actually kind of hard to cut. I went to a lady previously who cut my hair wayyy too short so I couldn't wear it naturally because the layers with my curls were too short. Brittany knows how to cut the length perfectly. Sigh. I really, really wanted to like this place. When I find a stylist I like, I'll stay with them forever. Great access off the freeway, easy parking - at a cost about $30 less than I'm used to paying. The salon has a very friendly atmosphere, with a fun little boutique on the side. The stylist (very friendly, nice person) who cut my hair asked questions about my hair & styling routine, and said she knew exactly what I wanted. The haircut took about 1/2 hour less than I'm used to. She styled my hair with a rounded brush, so it was kind of weird and bumpy - I've had weird blowouts and stylings with a great cut before, so I thought I'd wait until the next day. The next day - not so happy. Figured I'd give it a week. Gave it a week, and started noticing weird uneven areas. Then it started flipping up in weird places, despite applying a straightening iron to my already very straight hair. I later realized my hair was significantly uneven, for example, 1 side is short enough to fall out of my pony tail, the other side is so long it is difficult to pull out from my pony tail. The salon itself is amazing (I left details in my previous review below) so I wanted to continue going to the salon, but try a different artist. I Just had an appointment with Brianna- OMG/WOW she is amazing- my hair feels so healthy, the cut is perfect for my face and she kept in mind that I am growing out my bangs. Her consultation was very thorough and continued throughout our appointment (ex. Now we are going to do your layers, we will start here and do blah blah blah) I loved that we were a team working on my hair and she kept me informed and wanted my feedback on what I like and don't like, etc. It has been years since I have been this happy and excited about a hair cut- I literally FaceTimed my friend immediately after to show how great and healthy my hair looks. Decided to check out the salon after reading the review... Yes...everyone was nice and polite...but when I got my highlights...at first...my hair looked amazing, but when I got home...and really looked at my hair, I was not impressed. I stated several times that I did not want to have the brassy color... I came in only for highlights, but Amanda suggested a hair trim...I said no, didn't want to pay $55, but she trimmed my hair anyways for free...and I don't like it... Some of the highlights are very orange looking and not even...My hair at the top of more colored than the hair at the bottom... So my hair is brassy looking and not even and the color makes me look washed out. Sometimes I wonder about these Yelp review...lol read more

This review is for the incredible TARA! (Although my entire experience at Salon Cartier was five-stars worthy). Once I arrived at the salon, I was greeted by a friendly front desk lady who offered me a beverage and a tour of the salon, which really made me feel welcome and comfortable! The little patio they have outside is really cute and very different from any salon I've ever been in! Once I sat down with Tara, it was obvious she really knows and loves what she does! She showed me several hair color swatches (I had come in for partial highlights but was slightly unsure of what exactly I wanted) and took the time to make sure I picked exactly the one I wanted, while also offering her professional opinion on what she thought would look best on me. She got to work and I knew I was in good hands! Tara offered styling tips (which I've since used and found super helpful), as well as friendly conversation while she worked. She is ridiculously sweet and easy to talk to and made the time pass very quickly! It was obvious she really knew her stuff and took extra care to make sure my hair came out perfectly (I got red and blonde highlights and she really took her time to make sure they did not bleed together when she washed the dye out of my hair.) Tara also showed me some color preserving hair products and showed me examples of hair color that faded from other products versus color that stayed vibrant with the recommended products...I typically hate this part of a salon appointment, because I tend to feel pressured by stylists shoving products down my throat, but Tara did not make me feel this way at all! I ended up purchasing the recommended products and am very happy I did! Tara gave my side bangs a complimentary trim and did an amazing job styling my hair, all the while taking the time to explain what she was doing and how I could try to mimic the look on my own. I left the salon in less than two hours and looking like I had spent all day getting beautified! I ended up going out to lunch directly after my appointment and the waitress immediately complimented my hair when I walked in! I am so happy how it turned out and it's amazing that Tara was able to create exactly the look I wanted, when even I wasn't sure what I wanted at first! I was a first time client and I was very hesitant to go because my best friend (who had recently moved to la) had always done my hair. I went in and saw Briana and the first time I went I was there for 4 hours and left with my hair basically unchanged except for curls put in. I went back a few days later for another 2 hours and still left not excited about my hair. A few Weeks ago I went and visited my friend and she had to completely redo my hair how I wanted it to be originally resulting in my hair being bleached 4 times in about a month and completely fried and damaged.my friend had too treat my hair for damage and I am now having to deep condition and add keratin to my hair to make it even slightly soft to the touch because it was so damaged by all the repair work that was needed after leaving salon Cartier.
