Let's start with the long wait time I came in for a trim, wash, and silk press, and I ended up waiting for hours. The shop owner doesn't seem to know when to turn people away. She keeps taking in new clients, leaving them sitting for hours, spending their entire day at the salon just to get their hair done. I came to Hair Therapy as someone who has struggled to maintain my 4B/4C hair. I arrived with my hair in its natural state under a bonnet. When it was time for the stylist to wash my hair, I removed my bonnet, and as soon as she saw my dry natural hair, she began showing visible signs of dissatisfaction as if she didn't want to do my hair or had never worked with Black hair before. This was shocking, especially since she is a Black woman herself, working in a Black-owned salon. She looked at my hair in disgust and immediately grabbed some detangler, saying she would work through it dry. I told her, "All you need to do is run some water through it and it will loosen up," but she continued huffing and puffing, clearly annoyed. Her body language made it obvious she didn't want to deal with my hair. When I asked if she was okay, she said she was fine but moments later, without any explanation, she walked out of the room and went to the front of the salon like she was about to pass out or cause a scene just to avoid finishing my hair. The situation felt disgusting and discriminatory. I was left sitting there with my neck tilted back in the wash bowl, starting to cramp, until another stylist came over to finish washing my hair. When I asked what was wrong with the first stylist, she brushed it off like it was nothing. I've never felt so uncomfortable in a place that was supposed to be welcoming to someone like me, as a Haitian-American woman. It was absolutely the worst salon experience I've ever had, and no woman should ever have to go through that level of unprofessionalism. The owner claims her salon is "inclusive" and "different from others," yet even during my negative experience, she bragged about how she could move to newbury street and raise her prices because people "keep complaining" about them when, honestly, for the quality of service provided, the prices are not worth it. In the end, my silk press only lasted two days. Overall, it was a terrible experience that has haunted me since. read more

Still a five. I added new pics too. I get everything done here. Partial weave, braids, balayage and now my son, who is on the Autism Spectrum, gets his hair done here. He is half Mexican so he has REALLY CURLY hair and is tender headed and being on the spectrum means he feels pain 10 times more different than neurotypical kids. He smiles the entire time he is getting his hair done. The last time Melissa did braids in his hair and played math games the whole time to help him through the process. I live on the South Shore and I go to Salon Hairapy. They are very accommodating with my schedule. I have issues with dry flaky scalp and Kathy the owner helped direct me to go to a dermatologist to get my dry scalp treated. I have being going to different salons and no one ever told me I need to see a dermatologist for my scalp. Now I can go out and not feeling embarrassed about flakes falling on my dark clothing. I used to have my hair perm and Kathy told me, with the texture of my hair she recommend me to go natural and that was one of the best thing ever, now I do not perm my hair anymore. I came in months ago just to attempt to get my 3 year old's (at the time) hair braided for his upcoming birthday. I was already turned away from one salon due to his age so I was prepared for him to cry throw a fit and them to say "BYE!". He cried. He yelled and squirmed his body but they did not turn us away they gave him a chance. Tried to calm him. Hugged him, reassured him he is ok. For that I appreciate them wholeheartedly. This would then shape his attitude and his feelings about getting his hair done going forward. From them on, each visit they grew on him and vise versa. My 4 year old literally sheds NO tears getting his hair washed, detangled and BRAIDED, conrows. We go every 2 weeks or so and I trust no one else to braid my kids hair. I used this salon for the first time months ago (fall 2019?), and I was not disappointed. I have since returned and felt, again, that I got good value for my money. I'm hoping to go back after all the COVID craziness dies down. Update from June 26: Mask use wasn't constant, however, in the stylist's conversation her attitude seemed to indicate she was taking precautions and understood the seriousness of the virus. She stated she'd heard of another salon in the news from which people had contracted covid. They did frequently sanitize. My hair--after using a new product--turned out great! The stylist had the opportunity to up-charge me with a deep conditioner or a full relaxer because of the length of my new growth, but she was honest about her process and saved me money, in addition to recommending products I liked that she used. My husband has locks and my daughter is 3.5 and has been going there since she was 2. I literally don't know where to start! Walking in the door for my first appointment and was greeted right away as if I was a regular customer. There was no wait, I set my things down and went right to the wash basin. I had a lovely deep conditioning followed by a gentle detangling and then to the dryer. I got a full sew-in with lace front. The braid down was immaculate, the sew-In FLAWLESS! I literally cannot say enough about the service. Everyone in the shop works together, they all seem very happy to be there, and they all take great pride in their work. I was really impressed by this salon. I've been growing my natural hair for six years now and it's been so hard to find a hair salon that really caters to natural hair. This salon is the real deal. I went here yesterday to get my hair pressed and trimmed after work. As expected since Sunday is Easter and also my birthday the salon was packed. I didn't mind the wait because I know the afternoons can be hectic. The staff was so friendly and personable. The atmosphere was lively and spacious. Everyone who worked on my hair was so nice. Unfortunately, I only remember Kendra's name. She was so bubbly and lively. The prices are reasonable but I'm sad to say my hair sweated out overnight. I went here on a recommendation of a friend, when I found out my regular salon had closed and I was extremely happy with the results. I got a partial sew-in, styled in a layered bob with Patricia. The two main things that will keep me coming back are 1) I showed her a picture and she did exactly what I wanted, and 2) I could tell from the way she did my hair that she cared about hair care (and not about just throwing the weave in my head as fast as possible, which I have found to be way too common when get weaves/braids). This was the first time I had a touch up with no burning, just wish I didn't have to spend the entire day in the salon to get my hair done. They were down two stylists on a Saturday which meant a lot of time waiting. I also wish they had the new, high-tech, fast drying hair dryers, that would have cut down on the wait time too. I was scheduled for a crochet braids at 10 AM on a Friday - I arrived on time for my appointment and noticed only 2 stylists working, and several customers ahead of me; one customer was just getting started on locs by the stylist that was scheduled to do my crochet. Long story short; at 1:30 PM my hair had only been washed and blow dried, I hadn't even been braided. I told the woman at the front desk that I had to leave the salon no later than 3:30 PM; I walked out of the salon that afternoon with 4 quickly installed and extremely messy goddess braids. I looked horrible and I was furious. I took the day off of work; I had tickets to a show in Boston. My entire day was ruined because Salon Hairapy double books and mismanages their appointments. Amazing! I had a sudden, powerful impulse to change my look, so I checked out Yelp reviews looking for a fix. I called Salon Hairapy on a Wednesday afternoon, and was able to book an appointment for first thing the next morning. Called back a few times that night to ask followup questions, and the woman on the phone was pleasant and helpful. I arrived Thursday morning to get my first full sew-in weave, and the whole process was wonderful! The shampoo was the most comfortable I have had. Perfect temperature water, no pain in my neck, the woman who did my shampoo was so nice, but sadly I can't remember her name =( There is a receptionist, Michelle, who was lovely as well. And Kathy, the owner, unbelievable! She's super friendly, and does a fantastic job, not to mention she's gorgeous! I got a full sew-in weave with 18" hair and a fresh cut. She talked me through the process, discussed my style options, and worked with me at the end to perfect the bangs. Oh, and did I mention I hadn't bought enough hair, and she threw in one of her own bundles for a very reasonable price (the blended colors turned out to be perfect). All this, in under two and half hours. Full sew-in service for only $200. And now I'm so glamorous, people don't even recognize me =D I will be back for follow-up appointments for my weave, and for the removal. But I will also be back for everything else, natural styling, blowouts, you name it. After one visit, I am hooked, this is my salon!!!
