L'Etoile was sold months ago to hairdressers' who worked there while Jerry and Melvin owned the shop. These new owners need to modify their their rude and abusive ways. One of the owners came over to to me and hollaring while telling me to get out of the shop. I was not allowed to continue with my appointment. This happened because in the past when I made appointments I had to cancel them due to the expense, The shop is very expensive and if the person can't afford having their hair coiffed then they need to cancel and reschedule. Stephen B. was my hairdresser and he is no longer working there due to a severe accident he had in his home. These new owners need to realize that a business takes a lot of work and expense and not express their rudeness towards the customers. read more

I have been going to Salon L'Etoile for many years. In fact the salon was originally located at Church Rd and Old Yk. Rd. I use Stephen B. as my hairdresser. I used to work with Stephen when he worked for Stan's on Krewstown Rd. He is a very good hairdresser and colorist; too. Coloring is a tricky thing. Most hairdressers need courses in that field for updated knowledge of new ideas and techniques. The classes are very expensive but if a hairdresser is going to take on hair coloring it is important and necessary. The Salon itself needs to speak with its employees, especially the shampoo group about voicing their unprofessional opinions about politics. Their views were never asked for and they seem to continue with their unsolicited opinions. read more

Bride beware... it's actually been a long time but I just remembered this place as I was looking at my wedding pictures. Just want to give my honest review and hope that it will help a bride considering to go here for her hair and makeup... First off I got married a few years ago, my mom and I found this place and decided to go in and ask about the process for getting my bridal hair and makeup done. They said there is a trial to see if you like which I believe costs just as much as the actual thing. That's fine whatever. We go in for the trial and it went pretty well. I showed a pic of the type of hair I wanted and the stylist did a pretty good job (although it wasn't exactly what I wanted) but it was great nonetheless. I had to get my hair color re treated because another salon did a terrible job on my hair, I will say the stylist did a great job at re coloring my hair so there's no issue with that. However I remember on the phone telling her I no longer wanted a specific keratin treatment or something like that. When I went in for the color fix the stylist was pretty rude to me about canceling that other treatment. She said it interferes with her other appointments... even tho I called ahead and told them ? Ok I don't see how that's my fault but whatever. That was the first red flag... then this is the part that still is upsetting to me. So the big day approaches my wedding day. I go in and get everything done... I was early too. Right on time, makeup was done and stylist was doing my hair. Then all of a sudden she sees my veil and says to me that she is gonna try something different on my up do ? Uhhh ok what? I didn't want anything different, I showed her the picture of what I wanted and gosh it looked NOTHING like it. Not even like the way I had it done on the trial (which was alot better than what she had done) There was no shape to the up do... it basically looked like a round ball on my head... seriously disappointing. The stylist also made my mom break the comb on my $80 + dollar veil!! WTH!! Not okay.... very unprofessional. She blamed the fact that she changed my hair on the veil and said that we should've brought the veil to the trial. Omg how should I know that? Isn't it their job to tell me what to bring? Well regardless it wasn't right... she was also rushing on my hair toward the end saying she has another appointment. I don't understand how a place could just do this to bride on her wedding day. Really unprofessional and upsetting. Stylist (Masha I believe her name was) was pretty rude at times. Honestly I shouldn't have left if I wasn't happy but we needed to get to the church. Overall it was a pretty bad experience on my hair for a day I will never get back... I hope you are cautious when going here if you are a bride. Make sure that you bring everything you want and plz don't break your veil! A stylist should be able to work with this... I managed to fix some wedding pictures on my hair but most of them are too hard to fix. Now I'm even considering just to get the pictures re shot and have my hair and makeup re done because of this... many years later. Anyway I hope this review helps someone. To the salon, honestly no hard feelings but I just wanted to get this out there. What's done is done. Would never go back there again! I thought I would go there to change my look from basic black color to something different. Well, I got something different alright. The colorist gave me second degree burns on my neck and scalp, I broke out in a rash on the front of my neck from the infection, I had to go to the doctors and get on antibiotics. The wounds hurt every time I turn my head. Not to mention my hair is fried! It breaks off every time I brush it; I *used to have* naturally curly hair, now I do not; it's a total frizzy mess. I was a customer at the salon for over a decade, SOLELY because Jamie did my hair and she's the best in the business. But, every time i came in, i told her not to fear leaving, her customers would follow her anywhere. After 11 years of dealing with rude Ernie and nasty Helen at the front desk, Jamie FINALLY left and went to a REAL salon. The problems are many. Waaaaay too loud. Holy shit so loud. Everyone who works there is SO rude. Why are they a cash only business? Why don't they accept credit cards for bills under $150? SHADY. Why does it look like a cheap 90s rave warehouse? And the prices. They are ridiculous. But, again, Jamie is the best, so i kept coming. Imagine my joy when Jamie left and went to a REAL salon?? And when i came in for my first appointment i saw the only decent front desk person L'Etoille ever had at LePapillon?? MARGIE IS BACK!!! I said I'm very flexible I can come back any time any day they offered me a hairdresser and said she is marvelous Well Koula doesn't know how to cut short hair she showed me the pictures of exactly what I wanted and definitely didn't know how to cut it Next day I called and complained to Chris (owner) she offered for me to come back and she will do fix it herself when I came back she said that I need for Koula to fix it I have cancer and that day was horrible rain So I left and told them I'm NEVER coming back to that salon I just wanted y'all to know beware!!!! read more

This was my first time booking an appointment at L'etoile. My friend and I made appointments a week in advance to get our hair colored and cut. I called the day before to confirm the day/time and what we were getting done. The salon called me the day of to confirm the appointment again, then called to gather more info on what we wanted (even though this was discussed twice before), and then said they wouldn't be able to accommodate us both, and told me to reschedule. The man on the phone did not even apologize for the inconvenience. L'etoile just lost my business due to awful customer service, poor professionalism, and unreliable appointments! Koula V.is by far the best hair stylist I've experienced in the world. I've been to Japan, Cali, Washington State, NJ, & Pa, and she knocks any color desire out of this world. She understands how to color match to your skin tone. As well as, the specific color you want and tailor it to you. Koula treats you like family and is so personable. This location is basically the polar opposite of its Manayunk location, which I used to visit regularly when living in that area. I was delighted to find out, upon moving to the Jenkintown area, that I could return to a L'Etoile. I had some of the best haircuts and experiences at the Manayunk location. While the Manayunk location is elegant, serene, and a little edgy, the Jenkintown location is more gritty and behind the times. The folks at the front desk continued to call me by the wrong name (though to their defense, it happens all the time), and interestingly enough, they do not take credit cards. While that's totally OK by me, they should at least put a sign out that says as such. I was shocked when I was asked to pay by check. Luckily, I had a checkbook on me! My haircut was done by Patrick and he did an excellent job. He was very personable and knowledgeable and I felt comfortable that he was taking good care of my long, thick hair. I also appreciated that bang trims are free in between haircuts. Then I had an appointment to get my eyebrows waxed. That didn't go as well. I am very specific when it comes to how I would like my eyebrows done. I went over this with the technician prior to the waxing and she did what she wanted to do anyway. Afterwards, she even admitted as such. She handed me the mirror and said, "I know you probably won't like this because I didn't follow your rules, but I think it looks nice." It did look nice, but it wasn't what I'd asked for. Just a little frustrating, but hair does grow out. When I returned for a trim, I waited awhile to be seen and was treated to about 25 minutes worth of the owner berating people (at the salon and on the phone) and a lot of gossip. Not exactly something that should be taking place right in the front of the store while people are waiting to be seen. Come on, L'Etoile - class it up a little! read more

What is up with the atmosphere in this salon?? My stylist is very sweet. But every time I'm there, the shampoo people are talking in a nasty way about other employees. Every time. So unprofessional. I don't want to hear that gossip every time I'm there! They don't tell me their name or greet me. One woman shampoos so roughly I dread it. The man at the front desk was extremely rude as well when I was trying to find out the name of the shampoo person so I could tip her - he argued with me about the hair color of the people in the shampoo room! I argued right back and had to describe the woman in a different way for him to stop arguing even though what I said was factual. Again my stylist is great but the atmosphere there makes me consider not going back. Seems like many of the employees there need a class in customer service - I don't care if he is the owner! read more

Ever since I moved out of Philly to the burbs I've been trying to fill the brow and Brazilian wax hole left by Emma at International Salon. I finally found Kathy at L'etoile by recommendation and let me say that coming from the quick briskness that is international, I LOVE Kathy. She is less painful than Emma, although slightly more expensive. She was faster too! As for her brow waxes, she does EXCELLENT work. I cannot speak highly enough of it. While on the expensive side, I don't mess around when it comes to brows after losing half an eyebrow to a careless waxer. Kathy takes her time, waxes, cuts, brushes out, plucks remaining strays, etc, until she has it perfect. I'm very pleased!! Five stars from me! read more

Back again for another appointment with Theresa last night. Ladies, if you want stellar color and a cut that is EXACTLY what you ask for - ask for Theresa. Went in last night to get rid of my ombre and told Theresa exactly what color I wanted. She made a few suggestions which I went with and I am so happy i did!! I have such beautiful color now with low lights and a fresh layered cut. I've already gotten so many compliments on the change and its only 2 hours into the next day. I thank Theresa and Salon L'etoile for the cat calls from the construction workers driving by :) Other notes: -salon is so clean -hair washing chairs are massage chairs -she stayed late for me -jerry is awesome!! I don't usually review salons, as I am not a big proponent of going to expensive places to have my hair cut. However, I felt the need to leave a review after having Dennis style and cut my hair for a wedding. My results couldn't have been any more stunning or worth the money! The treatment from the time I walked him until the time I walked out was that of loyalty, I wish I could afford to do this every single week, because I would. I went to see Paige, I have been following her since I first got my hair done with her and now she's my girl. I really liked the salon, it is so big and seems to be quite organized and fun to go to. I got shampooed in the first room by a very sweet woman and then Paige did great with my hair as always. It was a great experience and I'm looking forward to going back. I have been a loyal customer since 12th grade. This morning this service was awful. They were so lucky I did not throw a tantrum like the client after me. He complained to management because he waited 15 min for his hair cut appointment- meanwhile I waited 20 min- and had previously explained that I needed help to get a huge knot out od my hair. So that took some time. That client was so rude. My hair dresser charged me $65 for an unfinished cut. Im very tempted to call back for a refund. I will never go back there after that. If it weren't for the perennially cranky older gentleman at the front desk, this salon would earn five stars. As far as the salon services go, my needs are about as simple as they can get, so my review would hold minimal value for those seeking a more complicated service. Despite many years of patronage, I would be lying if I said I really enjoyed coming to the salon. I have never been displeased with the services I have received (except for one Monday when I was in a pinch*), but I am always tremendously put off by the man behind the front desk. His foul attitude is just enough to spoil an otherwise pleasant experience. *Lesson learned: avoid the salon on Mondays if you don't absolutely need a service. I would refer to the scant few stylists who are willing to work on a Monday as the "B Team." read more

Definitely one of the best salons I've ever been to. I have long, thick and curly hair and I wanted it colored. Theresa did an AMAZING job and the atmosphere was quiet and pleasant. I had moved back home after living in DC for five years and was having so much trouble finding a good Brazilian wax. Someone on yelp suggested Rena and I am so glad I took their advice. Not only does she do amazing waxing, body and face, but she has also transformed my nails from the miserable excuses for nails that they were to the most beautiful and strongest, LONGEST nails I've ever had thanks to the new gel polish that Rena loves to use. I would highly recommend her for any and all of your pampering needs. I took her recommendation to go see Dennis at L'etoile for my hair and he does great work too! If you need a wax, or a mani/pedi, Rena is the woman to see. You won't be disappointed! She really is the best. read more

I was suppose to go to a work Christmas party sometime the second week in December, 2017. I scheduled an appointment with another hair stylist who cancelled because of a snow storm. L'etoile is downstairs from where I work so I decided to go there. I asked when I walked in if they had anyone who could do ethnic hair and the woman at front desk responded," yes, we have black people. " (I only wanted to know if they had someone available to manage ethnic hair I could care less about skin color) In any event the woman who washed my hair might as well have given me a bath because my face and clothes were wet and I even felt like I was drinking water. In addition she was ruff, raking through my hair telling me how damaged my hair was. (My hair is natural) I told her my hair is not damaged it's the way you are combing it. I literally had to take the blow dryer from her and show her what to do. Not very experienced at all. Not worth $50 read more

Worst experience ever! First we were greeted by the stylist, Theresa, in a nasty manner. We showed her what we wanted done for my daughters 14th Bday gift from our cousins. My daughter has been very ill for over two years and this was supposed to help her gain some of her self esteem and confidence back! We called and booked the appointment saying we wanted color and a trim. We weren't asked what we wanted exactly and honestly never having had his done didn't know how to better book it. Theresa was NOT happy that it was more of a highlight type process than a color. Sorry! She started right in on my daughter saying how greasy and disgusting my daughters hair was. She said her split ends were so bad they'd have to cut inches off. First of all my daughter showers and washes her hair daily, secondly if her split ends were so bad why was only 1/2inch removed? We showed Theresa a picture of exactly what my daughter wanted. Bold, beautiful color with depth and different shades of blue blending together. She understood what we wanted. She hurried through the process and even the shampoo woman commented that she didn't see any color. As they were blowing dry my daughters hair my cousin and I were so upset and In Shock. We couldn't find the color either. We asked Theresa and she made up a lame excuse that she went easy with the color because sometimes schools don't like that. She didn't ASK US! My daughter is homeschooled via cyber school due to her health. It was her excuse for doing such a lousy job and being so nasty. We were all beyond disappointed! When my cousin went to pay as it was her gift to my daughter for her bday, she was told it's policy that they can't take credit cards for under $150. My cousin had her hair done there in the past as had my aunt who was there before we were. She left as we were seated. She paid the $115 via credit card with no issues. When we left the salon was empty and Theresa kept insisting we needed cash or a personal check we could write to her. Neither my cousin nor I had that much cash on us or our check books. As my cousin has paid with credit before for that same amount she never thought it would be an issue. Finally Theresa gave in and accepted the payment. It was truly a nightmare. My daughter had been so thrilled for weeks leading up to this and to have such Horrendous experience truly took the wind out of her sails. I wouldn't send my dog there let alone someone I care about. My cousin should have been given a full refund!! Luckily we found a much better Salon that treated my daughter fabulously and did her hair so gorgeously that she hasn't stopped smiling since. Zoe Sky Salon saved the day! I finally got to see a truly genuine smile from my daughter and the sparkle in her eye that I havent seen during these past two years of hell she's been through since she became so ill! I understand people have off days or bad days but to take it out on a poor sick 14 year old girl was sick and twisted. Also as a hairstylist she should have been embarrassed to let us leave withy daughters hair looking like she had done nothing. What a waste of hours we can never get back. read more

I constantly have people asking "who does your color?" My hair is always healthy and my highlights are always in harmony with the time of year ie; more blonde highlights in summer and more low lights in wnter. When I have to travel out of town I often will go to a salon for a simple wash and blow dry and the hairdressers always compliment the condition of my hair and how natural it looks. I've been going to L 'Etoile in Jenkintown for a few years now after searching long and hard for a stylist that can give me a great cut and highlights. Sadie does an excellent job of making me look like a [cough, cough] natural blonde. The salon is always loud and bustling but it's worth tolerating for a great cut and color.
