From a guys perspective. I have always had issues finding a good place to get my hair cut. Traditional barber shops in the area cut by the numbers. It will be a decent cut but nothing that stand out. A problem i run into is I never really know what I want and it takes a good stylist to bring it out of me. I've found that stylist with Nicole at Best Kept Secret. The salon is cozy and relaxing but more importantly customer centric. It doesn't feel sterile, but feels lively, frenetic and fun. Usually you can find my restaurant reviews on yelp but I had to write about my go to spot for hair cuts. The Best Kept Secret is located on the ground floor of a multi purpose building on Race Street. It has a Race Street Address but the entrance is off of Ridge. This salon is owner operated and Lori and Heidi really make you feel at home. Their pricing is very affordable and they do a great job. I can't comment on all the services they provide because I just get my hair cut there. read more

Best Kept Secret salon really is one of the best kept secrets in Ambler - it's a very small salon that offers high end color for very affordable pricing. I usually see Nicole here & she has done everything from dying my hair, giving me a new style (buzzing part of my head!), and highlights. The prices are so good - a single dye is $70 cut and blow dry included & partial highlights is $90 cut and blow dry included. I love that the cut and blow dry are included in the cost because at most salons these two services are additional costs! Nicole has always worked with me to figure out which color/tone would work best for me and has always made me feel comfortable - she even wrote me a thank you note after my first visit (such a cute touch). Hours here are not standard like most salons however they're very flexible and will schedule outside of regular hours if requested. Parking can get tricky as it's all street parking & they only accept cash or check for their services. Would highly recommend! read more

I'd been putting off getting my hair cut for ages, until it was a terrible mess, because I wanted to find a nearby stylist I could stick with after I moved to the Fort Washington area. Well, I've found one! Today I finally mustered my courage and tried Best Kept Secret, since it's close to home and I'd seen good reviews, and it was exactly what I'd been looking for. Tiny, homey, independent, with a cheerful, cozy, friendly atmosphere. Everyone in the place seemed to know each other well and to enjoy chatting and trading compliments on the beautiful prom hairstyles the stylists were putting together. Nichole -- new to the salon, but clearly an expert! -- cut and styled my hair to perfection, and she was wonderfully warm and friendly throughout. Nicole is the absolute best! She gives an honest opinion of what will look best, as well as what won't damage your hair. Too many hair dressers that I've gone to either let me do something extreme that I regretted or didn't seem to be listening to me at all. Nicole listens to why you are looking for and suggests tweaks that would be best on you and to keep your hair healthy. I honestly can not say enough good things about her!! I don't like to leave bad reviews, or reviews at all, but I had a really unpleasant experience at Best Kept Secret. My friend and I had appointments for a wash and cut, but when we got there, we were told that our stylist was out sick. Our appointments were in the early afternoon, so the salon had nearly half a day to call us and tell us not to come in. But they didn't, and we planned our day around these appointments, only to be told of the cancellations after we got there. (They said someone must have forgotten to call us.) They tried to reschedule us with a different stylist, but couldn't fit us in until three hours later in non-consecutive appointments. I should also mention that my friend is transgender. When she originally called, she asked if they were comfortable and had experience with transgender clients. They said it was no problem. But when we got there, they referred to her as "him," despite the advance notice and the fact that she is obviously living as a woman. If you know anyone who's transgender, you understand how frustrating this is. Really disappointed with Best Kept Secret. read more

I admit it, I am the girl who is terrified to have any one touch her hair. After a few long lifeless years and some radical life changes, I decided I better work through my fear. When entering the salon, I got the feeling of being at home, the salon is small cozy, clean, and welcoming; alas my nerves weren't calmed. Nicole, my stylist, worked through a cut consultation and then a color (after blow drying the cut) consultation. She never made me feel hurried or nervous, I was informed every step of the way! In fact, as customers came and went, I almost felt like it was a rather exclusive salon without the obnoxious music and overly modern appointments. You may have to book out a bit for your chosen hair artist but after the amazing cut and color, I will only go one place. Prices were beyond reasonable and for the amount of time and care spent, I would gladly pay double. If your in Montgomery county, are in need of hair services, and want a salon where your stylist actually knows your taste (rather than looking a profile up on a card) you will be pleasantly surprised! I've been to this salon now twice and both times an absolutely great experience. Nicole, the stylist, is so approachable and friendly and nice. She's just a pleasure to be in the same room with. Their assistant, Jamie, is the same. I've gone twice now in later evening, obviously they have had a full day of work, kids, school, whatever, and they are still just so friendly and comfortable to be around. We found Best Kept Secret during one of the scavenger hunt days in our town of Ambler almost two years ago. I checked it out and decided to give them a try. Lori cut my hair, and she has been doing it ever since. It was the absolute BEST cut I have ever had. The salon is is welcoming and homey. The prices are SO affordable, the products they carry are always top of the line and priced below what you pay in typical drugstores. Just got the worst hair cut at Best Kept Secret. Even brought in a picture showing exactly what I wanted: long layered cut with bangs. Nicole cut 6 inches off my hair! And layered it terribly! Had to recut the bangs myself to make them even! I look ten years older and my hair looks like a badly styled wig. I kept trying to show her the pucture, she kept saying she got it. Oh no! HORRIBLE!
