I saw one review similar to the one I'm about to leave, so let me say DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU HAVE CURLY HAIR. The stylist I saw has curly hair herself, so I was shocked to find out over the course of my appointment that she has no idea what she's doing, including how to cut, style, or dry curly hair. I go to professionals because I expect them to be pros at what they do. I don't know everything about cutting hair. I arrived for my 10am appointment at 9:50. I sat in the waiting chair for 45 minutes and was about to leave when my stylist arrived. She did not apologize. After telling her what I wanted, which was a little layering in the back to give it some shape and to keep the length, she said she understood. As she looked through my hair, she said several times that she liked how I XYZ, which I believe were some tricks people use to make their hair more curly. I just looked at her confused. Eventually she said "this is just your natural hair?" with a slight air of disbelief. Yes. This is my natural hair. Or it was. I was told she would take "a little" weight out. She also said she wanted to keep the length. She did a dry cut and did it fast, and part way through I knew she was cutting the curls in a way that would make them curl funny, but it was a bit late. Generally, you shouldn't give curly hair three-inch wispy trailing ends. During the wet cut, she asked if I had any questions, and I said no I assume you're just cleaning it up, which she confirmed. Looking for errant long hairs. When she went to dry it, she got as much moisture out as possible, which was red flag number one. She used a tiny bit of product and put most of it on my temples, for some reason, which were crunchy later. She then used a comb to section and brush my hair straight in little pieces that she flipped over once by way of "curling" them. (Reader: this isn't how you curl hair and it's definitely not how you encourage a natural curl pattern.) She then got out the world's smallest diffuser and just pointed it at my head at strange angles while limply holding random parts of my hair (not truly cupping). My hair was unevenly half dry and totally frizzy. She sprayed hairspray under the top layer only and said I was good to go--with half-wet, frizzy, fluffy, messy hair. By the time I got home, it was just awful. Huge and fluffy and unwieldy. Couldn't really see much about the cut until I washed and actually styled and dried it an appropriate way for curly hair. When I'd washed and dried my hair and come out to the living room, my husband said, "Where'd all your hair go?" Basically, her cut ruined the curl pattern on the top layers. She thinned it out so much it looks stupid and like I'm losing my hair. I had asked for not too many layers so it wasn't disconnected from the length and I got the opposite of what I asked for. She "kept the length" only on the very bottom matters. It's also lopsided. Whole thing looks stupid and the only thing I can do is let it grow out. Also, this whole time, she was telling me stories of her recent escapades getting blackout drunk. read more

I have never written a yelp review, but felt compelled to do so after my thick curly hair, which I have been growing out for over seven years, was quickly cut off and ruined in under an hour. Where are my curls? Where is the thickness that once was? I guess they are down a drain somewhere, never to be seen again. Let me start this horror story from the beginning, so that all my friends with curly, thick hair are forewarned. As my curly hair friends know, finding a hairstylist that knows how to cut curly hair well is almost impossible. It's almost like finding a unicorn in the park. Actually, that might be easier. And, after moving to Boston in 2019, I was so scared of getting my hair cut that I actually was flying back to San Diego to see my hairdresser every six months, as she was the only one I trusted to not butcher my hair. As I look back at old pictures of my long, thick hair and bouncy curls, I can only cry, wishing I had spent the money to fly back to San Diego, as I now have to wait another six years for my hair to return to its former state....(pause for me wiping tears off my computer screen...) Ok...onto the review...so I was informed that this stylist, whom I will refer to as P, was very skilled and knowledgeable about thick, curly hair. I tried to have a consult with her first, but trying to get an appointment was extremely difficult. I was assured, over and over again, however, that she was great with my hair type. As I sat in her chair and we discussed the intended plan, it was to simply clean up the cut and keep the hair long. I could immediately tell that she was rushed, however, and when I asked if I could pull down my mask so that she could take a better look at my face to ensure the front pieces would frame my face properly, she said that she was pretty sure she had a handle on this. Well, an hour later, I can assure you that she did not. She cut my hair so quickly that I honestly had no idea what was happening; hair was flying to the right and left, as she chatted away, and I thought, "Wow, this is really great. I've never had my hair cut so quickly." Ha! The joke was on me as before I knew it, my hair was thinned out and feathered. Yes, my friends, the haircut was out of a 1970's movie. While it looked cool for a moment, it definitely was not cool in the long run and here's why...after a week or two of trying to figure out what the heck was going on with my hair at home, I noticed that chunks of it were falling out. Yes ladies, huge, long pieces of my hair were falling on my bathroom floor, on my bed, on my carpet...you name a surface and there was my hair. Not only was my hair falling out, the cut was totally unflattering AND uneven. Yes, I said it: she cut it so quickly that it was uneven. The left side of my head had less hair than the right side and still does for that matter, as it was chopped off and can't be glued back on my head like a Chia pet. Well, the saga continues...so, I call the salon and express my dissatisfaction with the cut. I was informed that they have a "redo" policy. Really? So, you want me to go back to the person who gave me a crooked 1970's mullet cut and give her another shot at it? Heck no...once I shared that I would potentially like a refund, I was told, the next day, that if I wanted a refund that I could no longer come to the salon for any other services. This response really pissed me off, as I was seeing a colorist, whom I adore, and still do, as she is fabulous. So, I thought about it, and when offered the opportunity to see a different stylist, I accepted... And the saga continues...When I walked in, there was no one else in the salon. It was as if they didn't want anyone else around to here or see me, which made me feel as though I had done something wrong. I was directed to see M. She was very sweet and kind, and told me that my "textured, thick" hair was "difficult," so she could see how it could be problematic. Before I go off on another long rant, let me say that if you are a hairdresser and can't work with ALL types of hair, then you should not be in the business of cutting or styling hair. But, M said she could fix it up a bit and I really thought she could...wrong again. Here I am now, with my hair still falling out from what I can only imagine is the angle and way in which P first attacked my hair, and then the addition of M making more crooked attempts at fixing it, and having to look at myself in Zoom meetings every day...HORRIBLE..So, Salon Marc Harris...go ahead and ban me from your salon. There is no need to color my hair, as it is falling out, and there is no refund that can replace years of beautiful, thick hair growth. Nothing. I have gladly taken my business elsewhere, to a minority and woman owned salon, and am so glad I did. As soon as I saw the hairstylist, she combed through my hair with a look of horror on her face, confirming that it was indeed uneven. Jayme Kilroy is fabulous! He listens and works within your constraints. I do not want to spend much time on my hair - wash, finger comb, air dry. When Jayme cut my hair in pre-Covid times, I could rely on my hair looking terrific with minimal effort on my part. Since I am rating the salon rather than the individual, I could not give five stars. I went to Robert with hair past my shoulders and a photo of a medium length layered bob but got an extremely short shag. Back to the positive, the salon sells Bumble & Bumble and Kersatase products. How, how, how is it that I haven't written a review about this place yet? What's more, how is it that I haven't written a yelp about _Rogue_? I have been going to see Rogue for over eight years now. That's right, you heard me -- over EIGHT YEARS. I'm pretty sure that I can count on one hand the number of people in Boston that I've known that long. I have followed her to three different salons...but she's been at Marc Harris for quite a few years now, and I can see why: the atmosphere is pleasant, the staff doesn't seem to perpetually turn over (something that seems to me to be a rarity in this industry), and they're always attentive to their clientele (during today's five hour full foil and cut, Rogue's assistant for the day offered to pick up some Au Bon Pain for me when she ran out to get lunch for herself, because she knew I was hungry!). Rogue and I have traversed a whole lot of life in that time. She was there for me when I was stick thin, rocking the G-Star Raw vibe and had three inches of wild, razored red and gold hair full of wax and pommade, she helped me cope with the awkward years of growing my hair out afterward, she polished a more subtle but still stylishly funky 'do for me when I ran off to do a respectable internship, and to this day I cannot think of one visit I've ever had that I didn't leave feeling better about the way I looked than when I walked in, no matter what volume my life needed my hair to be turned down (or up) to. I joke sometimes about not knowing what I would do if she ever upped and left, but seriously, yelp? Possibly not a joke. I just moved to Boston from Chicago and wanted to get my hair done for my anniversary with my boyfriend. I was excited to try out Marc Harris. I called a week in advance and made an appointment for highlights and a cut with Robert. I got there and was told they had overbooked... NO EXPLANATION. They tried to schedule me with Rogue but she was only able to MAYbe fit in a cut... through no fault of her own, she didn't seem to know what the deal was either. Of course, she then proceeded to tack on other processes I'd need to "correct" my previous color. First off, my stylist in Chicago was great and if I could fly back there to get my hair done (Mario Triccoci Salon with Jenny in Old Orchard), I would!!! With their prices, I could probably book TWO roundtrip tickets!!! Honestly, they were like, "Uh, sorry, but it's not like you can go anywhere else on a Saturday". Thanks, I felt like crap leaving that place. They just don't care despite the fact it was their fault. You'd think they'd want to maintain a positive reputation. At the rate their going, the customer isn't coming out on top. I have never loved my hair more than I do now. Lauren did an absolutely fantastic job and I WAS late, but had the decency to CALL (it's what cell phones are made for!). The receptionist thanked me for calling and asked me how late I thought I'd be. I told him maybe five minutes, if that, and that's about what it was. I apologized again once I got there, but everyone was fine and helped me out as though I'd gotten there 10 minutes early. The problem I have with some salons (including Dellaria Kenmore, which I did go to for a few years during college) is that they won't just do their thing once you tell them vaguely what you want (my stylist asked me if I had a picture and made me look for one); I told Lauren I wanted to keep the length, create a longer side-swept bang, and lighten up the weight with lots of layers (I have ridiculously thick hair). My hair is SO temperamental and people always used to look at me confused when I said I never air dried it because it looked like absolute crap when I did, but this STILL looks fantastic. No matter what I do to it. If it's humid, it gets wavy and a little funky, but in a good way! She just knew what to do with my hair and did it. The massage chairs add a nice plus to the shampoo....I was so stressed out when I went in, but I felt better than great when I left....actually I'm inspired to make a new appointment now, it has been a while... UPDATE: I returned to Marc Harris again, this time with an appointment with Paula (only because Lauren is in Andover on Saturdays and I like the option of having my hair cut on the weekend). She also did and AMAZING job. I don't think I'll go anywhere else in Boston...if I could afford it, I'd be getting my hair cut all the time!! read more

The interior was crisp, sleek, and clean and the receptionist was wonderfully gay and delightful. I helped myself to some Starbuck's coffee and the huge selection of elitist, gossipy magazines about the latest galas and cellulite treatments. They only carry Keratase and their own salon brand of beauty products, which I have yet to try. My friend's stylist is a genius. She accepted my goofy, DMB-lovin', BMW-floorin', I'm-from-the-cape, clueless friend (who was 20 minutes late to his appt.) and transformed him! read more

I followed my stylist, Timmy, here from a salon up the street. I could probably write an entire review on how cool Timmy is (talented, funny, edgy but still leaves you looking appropriate for work) but we're chatting about Marc Harris here. Word on the street is that they're moving to a new super snazz joint further down Newbury so the fact that they're currently in a nice open, modern sleek loft like environment doesn't really matter but it bodes well for their future home. My one complaint about this salon physically is that the lighting is super intense from right above your head so you can't really see the color of your hair until you get home and inspect it in your own mirror. Hopefully that will not be an issue in their new location. The ancillary staff here is awesome. You're not left waiting at a sink for your hair to be washed, they're pleasant, they do what they're supposed to do and they've got things set up properly for the stylist so there isn't a bunch of down time during your appointment while they hustle around getting their shit together. The reception staff are easy to talk to, warm, and accomodating. I've never had trouble making an appointment and I've never felt awkward walking in even though it's an expensive jazzy Newbury street place. Yes, this salon is expensive. It almost boggles the mind. But let me point out, you wear your hair 24/7. It's more important than spending money on a nice watch or baller kicks. Take it from someone who has made the cheaping out mistake in the past that resulted in a bit of a Jersey Shore look for a few weeks; anty up, friends. It is worth it. read more

Finally, I have a stylist! I met Paula very serendipitously about a year ago. I had spent the day shopping and was heading home to unload my bags and figure out the rest of my day. A girl walking on the street handed me a flier. A salon was hosting an event to raise money for a stylist to go on the 3 Day Avon Breast Cancer Walk. I needed a haircut. I went. Paula, though she didn't work at that salon, was giving up her Sunday towards the effort. She was very nice, listened to what I was looking for and then executed it beautifully. I took her card and knew I'd found a stylist. Since then she's been my stylist. She's remembered me since my first time back and even remembers what I like and some of the details of my life that I've shared while in her chair. She's so nice and great to talk with (though doesn't talk my ear off, I usually like to be quiet while getting a cut). I just got a cut from her on Saturday. I wasn't sure if we'd gone too short on the bangs (at my direction)...But then I went out that night and received so many compliments! One friend even asked who I go to! For the salon, it's pretty typical of Newbury St. Perhaps it's trying to be something it isn't quite, but I've never felt the pretension. The desk staff are very nice, even recognized my neighborhood by the street name! They carry Kerastase (uh-mazing line if you can afford it) and their own product. Massage chairs during your shampoo, a gimmick? Perhaps. But it sure is relaxing. Also: scalp massage. Enough said. read more

I cut my hair yesterday but I have waited to write review until now because I didn't like my hair last night. I actually knew I am going to be better today. Well, cutting skill was OK. My hair actually has different length left side and right side. While the stylist was blowing my hair I realized his bad habit. Compared with blond hair my hair is hard and need some moisture type of mousse when blowing. In addition, hand combing is enough no need to use brush. He just didn't know that. Maybe I should have told him but I thought it's rude. Now with my blowing, I look good! However, blowing also stylist's important skill so I reduced one star. read more

I have been going to Salon Marc Harris on Newbury Street for about a year now and I have never been disappointed with Sydney. I have a terrible habit of going back and forth between very red and rather blonde depending upon the season. Not only does she not lecture me about it, she actually does a fantastic job of doing a gentle transition, and instead of feeling like I'm going back each time waiting to get to the color to where I want it, I end up loving every stage of the transition. I especially recommend Sydney if you are going blonde/maintaining a (ahem) blonde color. She does incredibly natural, multi dimensional highlights. The cut can't be beat either! I have fine hair and haven't ever felt like I could wear it long, but since I have been going here, I've been able to grow it out well below my shoulders without it looking thin at all! An all around great experience (though I can't speak specifically for any of the other stylists). Not too pretentious or pricey for Newbury Street, and worth every penny. You'll love the massage chairs and the scalp massage too, and the girls who wash your hair are incredibly friendly and personable. Two big thumbs up! And, hey, easy on the receptionists, guys. I visited Salon Marc Harris hoping to recreate the pixie cut magic that my old stylist in Michigan had originally worked. Rogue was really nice and obviously worked hard but there is such a thing as fixing something when it ain't broke..and that can happen quite easily with a pixie. My hair is quite thick and my old stylist was able to cut a pixie that worked well with the thickness of my hair. Rogue took the thinning shears to my hair with such vigor that two months later, my hair still looks as if it has bald spots. I usually pick pixies because of their wash-and-wear easiness. Now I have to run to the bathroom every time I wear a hat to rearrange my hair. I was charged 70 dollars for this mess. Rogue mentioned that that every haircut gets better with the stylist's experience. I shell out that kind of money (keep in mind that I grew up in the boonies) for someone's experience with hair, not for them to gain more experience with my hair. Unless nothing else works for me, I will not go back. read more

I love this hair salon! Last week, I decided to to donate 9 inches of my hair and was really anxious about it. I had left Boston for 5 years and was nervous to have a new stylist - at just any salon - do my hair so I went to MH. When I called MH to make my appointment I was thrilled to hear that Chris Morrissey was still part of the crew! I felt like it was meant to be since I couldn't trust anyone else with this transformation. Chris was just as kind, patient, and talented as I remembered. He made me feel confident and comfortable. I recommend this salon to anyone who has high expectations when they make a hair appointment. There is excellent customer service. I tried Salon Marc Harris because of all the advertising and a confirmation from a co-worker that they do a great job. I booked an appointment with Chris. He is very sweet and he really knows what works for my face. I tell him what idea I have in mind and he just works with it and makes it happen. He is also very liberal with his use of foils! I have only had good experiences here and would recommend it to anybody who likes to treat themselves to a nice hair experience. I don't pay too close attention to the pretentiousness that is Newbury Street which I feel probably makes my experience that much better. read more

I've lived in the area for almost 5 years and they have done a consistently amazing job on my cut and highlights every time I come in. Mostly I have Sidney do my hair (the owner's wife). As a senior stylist, she does an amazing job with my highlights, and I'm always in and out in under 3 hours (I have very long thick hair and I usually get a full foil, cut, and blowout!). Pretty decent prices too. For all of this it's only about $220 before tip. I do agree with some of the previous posts that it is a bit pretentious. GENEVIEVE at Marc Harris spins straw into gold. I've been cutting my own hair for 15 years, with occasional tearful visits to salons. Back in February, I had a particularly stressful event that prompted me to perpetrate bangs on my hair. This was a decision I regretted until I went to Marc Harris and had Genevieve fix it. The salon is beautiful and meticulously kept spotless. It is so well put together and well-placed that I really do marvel at how affordable the hair cut is! Genevieve was quick, efficient, a lovely conversationalist, and, most importantly, a MIRACLE WORKER! I'd been making do with my hair for a few months, but whatever she did, it makes me HAPPY with my hair! As someone who usually cries after a haircut, I can't recommend Salon Marc Harris and Genevieve enough! I skipped through Copley Square after! read more

I went in for a haircut last week. I won't go back. The stylist, Yesi, wasn't all that welcoming (my first time) or pleasant (and I've been to my fair share of high-end salons). She complained that she had to shampoo my hair because "all the other girls are busy" and I had to ask her each time she put product in my hair what it was (I find this annoying, as I'd prefer for the stylist to tell me so I can learn). When done cutting, and after much discussion about how to style my curly hair at home, she abruptly put me under a heater (like for people who get color done), without telling me why or for how long. I expected her to diffuse my hair, as there's no way I could use a heater like theirs at home. She then took care of another client (which I find rude, but to each his/her own), moved me back to her chair, and said I was done. She never even offered to show me the back of my haircut, which I find to be a no brainer. The salon itself also lacked in service. Upon arrival, the ladies at the front desk seemed bothered by my presence. No welcome, simply asked for my name and handed me a wrapped up robe. Wait, a robe in a hair salon, for a hair cut? What do I do with that? Shirt off, shirt on? Otherwise, what's the point? Anyway, they didn't explain the robe thing, so I awkwardly chose my own adventure. At the end of my haircut, they said they couldn't provide samples of hair care products (really, I'm going to dish out $30 without knowing if something will work?). It really irks me that you MUST PAY TIP VIA CASH OR CHECK. Most every salon, restaurant, and business around the country allows you to tip on your credit card receipt. I can only imagine this inconvenience is to save them tax dollars. Again, for such a high end salon, this seems suspicious and discourteous to me. Perk: Free espresso. Next time, I'll go to a coffee shop and save $90. read more

Highly recommend, I recently moved here and was looking for a hair stylist that would know how to cut my hair, as my hair grows thick and long, and if people don't know how to cut it or work it, it does not look right; and to preserve the natural wave my hair has. BUT, WOW, ASK FOR "GENEVIEVE ROY", she is the best, she got it exactly the way my stylist back home cut it!!!! It's a great place and very inviting; people are great! ROGUE: I love her. If her haircutting weren't so effing good I'd tell her to quit her day job and do standup. She's funny as hell, she's down-to-earth, and she's very, very good at cutting hair. There's a lot of stylists out there that are great at the usual long-hair-side-swept-bang-blowout, but it takes serious talent to be able to do funkier, edgier looks, and Rogue is a master. I have short hair, and something I've always appreciated about her work is that she understands the little details that make short hair on a woman interesting and flattering. I've been seeing her for a year now and have never left unhappy. She's as good as it gets. As for the salon...meh. I'd love to help them update their look, as the decor is a little dated. read more

I love this place. Rogue is my stylist, and I picked her personally after moving to Boston and doing a ton of research to find a first stylist. I have curly hair, and a majority of stylists for some reason don't have a clue how to cut curly hair. She gave me the best hair cut I have ever had, and totally gave me a completely new look, which everyone loves. It was like a hair revolution. Not to mention, her personality can't be beat--she's the type of girl that stands out in a crowd, like Cyndi Lauper with scissors. So, the conversation is never dull. Love her. I am also a devoted Marc Harris fan. No unnecessary pretension, just great cuts and color. The first time I went, they were willing to come in early to meet me, and we had the whole salon to ourselves (that guy moved to James Joseph shortly thereafter). Since then, I've gone to Lauren three times for cut and full-foil highlights. She's fantastic. easygoing, nice, remembers me (with details!--this can't be overestimated in a salon), and sincerely cares that I have great hair. She's led me through going lighter to bangs without freaking me out, which is definitely a complement. While nowhere on Newbury is going to be cheap, I find Marc Harris quite reasonable (compared to several similar salons-Vidal Sassoon, Salon Blue, etc.--in Chicago). Gorgeous salon, fantastic customer service and really talented staff. Another plus - the amazing head massage that came with my shampoo! I could not recommend Shaighla enough - she did my hair for my wedding and made me feel gorgeous throughout my whole pregnancy and just recently cut the fiercest bangs for me. Five stars for Mary Letson, who I've been going to for mmm, going on 10 years, now? An absolute pro and a truly down to earth person. As for the salon itself, I liked their Ecocentrix incarnation better...it fit in more with my own aesthetic. Design issues aside, the place is clean and well run. And yes, as others have said, reception (Jake in particular) is very friendly as are the shampoo folks. read more

ok, pre-clause: i have really thick, heavy asian hair that's been colored, permed multiple times. it is NOT easy to work with. I was extremely skeptical of going to an American Salon (no racism involved here) because i've always gone to a professional, EXPENSIVE, Asian salon... i decided to try Marc Harris based on the phenom reviews on Yelp --i wanted a FRESH NEW HAIR CUT for the summer...basically 6 inches all off, at the base of my neck. I LOVE IT. I had and loved ROGUE, who really listens to all of your wants and concerns~ she's not just one to grab scissors~ and start chopping. she lets you know everything that she's doing~ the whole process start to finish. she explains how you should style, the time and effort it'll involve etc. ALSO, if you're wanting to get a NEW LOOK, she's definitely the CREATIVE one to go to. she'll definitely encourage you to branch out~ while still catering to the texture and condition of your hair. i can't rave enough~ (price-wise, it wasn't cheap, but it was DEFINITELY worth it!) plan to book ahead if you DO want Rogue *especially if you're planning on going on evenings/saturdays~* because she gets booked at least 2 weeks in advance! ps. they have massaging chairs that you sit in when you get your hair washed. And I of course still love Roque. 2) I decided to go cliche and get "the Ombre" and I had only had cuts previous to this by Rogue. Was in Boston on business and decided I definitely needed a cut. After a brief search I decided that Marc Harris would work and went with the recommendation on this website for Margaret. I was able to get a "same day" appointment which was great! I have gone to some of the best salons in NY, Ted GIbson, Nick Arrojo, etc., and have to say that Margaret did a fabulous job. Had a picture with me of the cut I wanted and she gave me something very similar, with adjustments for my face shape and hair type. I definitely recommend her!! I'm going to have to find a way to get back to Boston to get my hair styled by her!! read more

I got a haircut from Robert and he is a master. At first I wasn't so sure that I would like my cut, but I love it now. I've been searching for a stylist for a while - needed someone who knows how to balance something modern, but easy to take care of - I'm not into using a lot of hair product. I have stick straight hair - and stylist have a tendency to do super conservative cuts or styles that don't flatter my face - Robert did a great job and I'm going back next week for another cut! read more

I've been coming to Marc Harris for the past 2 years and wouldn't change it! Once you arrive, you are seated in the waiting area where you can select from any of the snacks they offer. Typically it's coffee, fruit and cookies. Then, you meet with your hair stylist. You discuss what you would like to do with the haircut/style and proceed to get your hair washed. While your hairdresser is focused on that, your back gets a nice massage as all seats have that option. Definitely a nice perk to the experience. (Massage chairs are only at Newbury st) Both their Newbury st. location, and the Avery st. location have excellent stylists and I wouldn't change their customer experience for anything. They also sell kerastase products to help rejuvenate your hair.
