I've never written a negative Yelp review in my life, and I'm genuinely sad to write this one. My first haircut with Gilbert was excellent, which is why I returned for a second appointment. He's truly a nice person, and I felt confident coming back. He clearly cares about his clients, which is why this experience was especially disappointing. I showed him the same photo of my desired haircut, explained that I wanted it exactly like the first time, and he told me he remembered how he had cut it. However, the result was very different from what I expected. It wasn't just a small variation. The cut didn't resemble the reference photo or my previous haircut. I've included photos in this review, one taken just days before the appointment and one after. What made things more difficult is that thinning scissors were used on my already fine hair, which left me with very little hair. One of the top layers was also cut significantly shorter than the rest, giving it a mushroom-like shape. I reached out afterward to see if we could find a solution. He did apologize, but also mentioned that "there might be something else happening," which seemed to suggest that the issue wasn't the haircut itself. From the photos included in this review, you can see that the change was clearly due to the cut. He agreed to let me come in to see if it could be adjusted, but during that visit, he seemed a bit frustrated. I understand that fixing a cut isn't always easy, but I left feeling discouraged. Now, months later, my hair is still in bad shape. It will take a long time, along with several visits to the hairdresser, to grow back and even out. I don't enjoy writing this, and I know that everyone can have an off day. If you have fine or layered hair, I would recommend communicating very clearly and asking questions before proceeding. Gilbert at Salon Mio Mio recently gave me a haircut that tamed the frizz, embraced the curl, and framed my face, three things I have been looking for in my substantial hair history. He was quick to assess my hair, (and he assessed me too!) to know that this would not be a daily hair straightening/blow dry situation but rather he worked with what I had, and who I was. The result is really a fun easy haircut that is still long, (even long enough for a ponytail!), but when around my face frames it with my very own curls. He also advised me how to care for my newly embraced curls, including being gentle when drying with a microfiber towel, as well as styling tips. What caught my attention from former reviews and photos was the art in the salon. The murals and decor capture the essence of San Francisco in the most beautiful way, (I have been here since 1972), and in person it made me feel as if I picked the right place. This review is going to take you on a rollercoaster. TL;DR, trust the process and the experts. I hadn't had a professional haircut in probably 5 years, and I had never lightened my hair. I used to have very long, very straight blonde hair naturally lightened from the sun. Cut to 2 years of never seeing the sun in New England, aging, and my hair texture changing. My first visit I initially wanted about 6-8 inches off. When I left I was in complete shell shock going from near waist length hair to shoulder length. Gilbert assessed my hair as he was cutting it, and made the best decisions for my new hair type. In 44 years of having straight long hair, I had no idea it had a wave and he gave me a cut that really accentuated that. I left however feeling kinda sad that all the blonde from my Californian years was cut off, and the remaining New England hair felt dull. I returned to Gilbert 6 weeks later and opted to go with the balayage he had recommended in the prior visit, which would replicate the natural pattern of my hair growing and getting sun bleached. This was the first time I've ever had any permanent hair color. I didn't know what I wanted or how to describe it, and just pulled up a bunch of my old pictures. I got my haircut from Gilbert and I'm super satisfied with it. I have long wavy/ kinda curly-also coarse frizzy (but still beautiful ) heavy middle-eastern hair and lots of it. I got a v shape hair cut with long layers. He was so careful to not cut my hair shorter than I wanted. Also he took the weight off which feels so good and looks stylish. Went here for years and got good haircuts but this last time has been a disaster. I asked for a trim because I was trying to grow my hair out. I literally only came in to trim the ends that they would look less thin and stringy and continue to look thick and full. There may be a few strands in the very back that are just slightly shorter as I wanted but for some reason the front is at my chin which is not at all what I wanted. For some reason in addition to cutting the front many inches shorter than I asked he used a tool that thins out the ends! What a horrible invention. I don't know why anybody would want their hair thinner? You can see what it looks like in the pictures. I was told this would make my hair easier to manage (which wasn't even something I came in requesting) I barely spent any time before but now I NEED to blow dry it and put product in just to make it not look horrible, so it takes me at least two times maybe three times as long as before. I also can't put it in a ponytail because the pieces in the front are so short my hair was below my bra line before I came in so this is just infuriating. My hair looks and feels so horrible I don't even know what to do aside from chop it all off. My advice would be to be very specific with you about what you want and if somebody asks you if they want to "lighten" your hair, say no! read more

Treat yourself! I've been going to this Salon since my favorite hair stylist/colorist left town to get married for heaven's sake! 10 years or so, I think. I'm very particular with my hair color so I got the "formula" from my former stylist and friend. Gilbert knew exactly what she was talking about and boy was he right. I told her what Gilbert's comments were about the color formula. She said "Oh yea, he knows exactly what he's talking about. You found a keeper." From that point on, I never looked back, except for her wedding which I attended. Gilbert cuts and colors my hair and my husband's. Gilbert is awesome. He's the Salon's owner. I've been going so long I've lived through his remodeling his space and it looks great. Comfortable, casual but somewhat elegant and a no muss no fuss approach. He has great ideas which I trust deeply. He's creative, refreshingly honest, likes to hear about your exciting travels, etc. his bookings are easily completed online, he takes square for payment. It's overall well time spent without wasting your or his time! My husband just loves the quality of Gilbert's haircuts on him. And, I love my haircuts from Gilbert. I go regularly because that's the best way to keep your hair looking good. I don't get my hair cut every time because Gilbert and I agree if often doesn't need it every visit, so sometimes I just do color (for me without much gray, root touch-ups only that gives my hair a deeper lustrous look and feel). Because of Gilbert's input, we went darker and I get so many compliments. I get many compliments on my sassy haircuts, too. I'm best in a shag, but we've done all sorts of other cuts, all of which we're great for their own reasons. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend anyone to Gilbert. He's simply the best! I usually don't write reviews, but this was a special one! I booked with Gilbert for an appointment the same week because I had an engagement photoshoot coming up. My color was all off and my previous haircut wasn't growing out well. Gilbert took the time to understand my preferences and came up with a style for me that felt much more suited to me. I finally got the wedding color of my dreams and wanted to update my previous review (which was also 5 stars). Honestly, if I could provide Gilbert with 6 or 7 stars, I completely would. He's phenomenal. I had a very intricate wedding hair color that I was going for -- it was a blend of 3-4 different colors and had tones of auburn, caramel and chestnut. Essentially, it was a look that required a blend of several different techniques including balayage, highlights and more, and Gilbert was completely un-phased like a pro! At the beginning of our session, he asked me for my input and talked to me about his elaborate plans to blend all the colors together. And I watched him work away his magic from 9am to 4pm! I kid you not -- it was an all day endeavor as Gilbert is such a perfectionist and settles for nothing less than exactly what you want. There was a point when Gilbert completed my look and I left the salon quite pleased. However, upon reflecting with a few friends, I wanted to remove one of the purple-ish shades at the base. So I went back to Gilbert and was a little embarrassed to ask him to redo this change after all the time he spent perfecting it. However, he made me feel completely at ease, mentioned that my satisfaction was of his utmost importance and flawlessly executed the change I was hoping for. The look was even better than what I had envisioned and I was so impressed with what a color aficionado he truly is! Bette is incredible. She listens to understand your vision, sets expectations for what she can achieve, and then executes brilliantly. I went in wanting to go from dark blonde (natural color) to vibrant red, while looking like it could be my natural color. Bette explained that I'd have to go browner than I'd like to not get washed out, showed me on the color chart, and set to work. Priscilla Gochez took such amazing care of me on my wedding weekend. She styled my hair on both the morning of my ceremony at City Hall and the afternoon of my reception, two days in a row. She accommodated me by traveling to me twice and worked around my odd hours on those days. She also styled my sister's and mom's hair on the reception day. Everyone's hair looked fabulous! She did an updo for my reception and it stayed put all day without looking like it was overly styled. I didn't have to mess with it even once. We did a trial prior to the big day and I'm glad we did. I had a fantastic experience with Gilbert at Mio Mio today! The location and parking were easy, which was already starting off on the right foot, and when I arrived Gilbert greeted me immediately and offered me a cookie (always the way to win me over). He proceeded to really talk me through some ideas for my hair, give his expert opinion, but most importantly listen to what was going to work for me. Considering that I'm as low-maintenance as they come when it comes to hair I sometimes feel vaguely annoyed at stylists who insist that I take my hair really seriously - but Gilbert didn't bat an eye when I told him that I trim my own bangs (the horror!) and even gave me some tips. If you want an amazing colorist book Andrew! I recently visited this salon. Andrew was the stylist to work on my hair. He was very professional and patient. He asked a lot of questions to suit my liking. The salon owner was working near by and he was extremely knowledgable with input and really personable. My hair was previously colored really blonde and it started to turn golden. After 2 months my hair became really lifeless and brittle. Which of course, I didn't like. Andrew suggested I try a different color blonde, I loved it! He also did a treatment and suggested other products to help my hair recover. I have received so many complements on my hair! He cut, colored and blew out my hair (which lasted 3 days!). Andrew's services exceeded my expectations. I have booked another visit! read more

Gilbert gave me great feedback and laid out a plan. He convinced me to get started with a better cut that will grow into something cool and then to consider the color, later, when I have more hair to work with. Imagine a shapeless carpet of inch-long hair as a starting point. That's a pretty difficult baseline to work with. I left the shop with an edgy little "do" and confidence I can wait several more months to get something better. He did not sell me products (said I could work with what I already have) and in fact also mentioned, several times, that he would be happy to do a complimentary clean up between cuts.
