*sigh* I think I'm in love. Never has such a gorgeous man rubbed my head and made me feel cute. I decided at 10:15 Saturday morning that I absolutely HAD to get a haircut THAT VERY DAY. I remembered having gone to E6W about 8 years ago and being very satisfied. The only reason I stopped going was because I started gravitating toward places closer to home. I was in the mood for a field trip, so I called and scored a noon appointment with Gregory. Oh, Gregory. Movie-star handsome and so charming! It was only his second day at the salon...he had just come over from a place in Union Square. I probably shouldn't spread the word about his fabulousness because it'll be hard to get appointments with him, but I just can't help myself. Gregory spent a solid hour with me, paying exquisitely close attention to every tiny cut. In the end, I had lost very little length but had gained a new shape and tons of volume and piecey texture, which was exactly what I wanted. I didn't have to say "messy works best for me"...he could tell from my texture and type of hair and from the way I had styled myself that this was my preference. He even analyzed the kid's hair and gave me pointers on how to tame it. $45...I think less for a man's cut. No product hard-sell. Gregory, you'll never be rid of me now! read more

After reading such great reviews for Every 6 Weeks here on Yelp, I was looking forward to getting my hair cut there. I found myself in The Castro and dropped in for a a cut. What do I look for in a salon? I'ts pretty simple, a resonably priced cut. One where I leave loving my hair and excited to return. I was a walk-in appointment and was seen shortly after I arrived. Danilo cut my hair, and seemed a little rushed about it. For my $35 I got a shampoo and cut. Now the main goal of a haircut, as far as I see, is to get that head of hair looking better. While I wasn't expected to be astounded by the cut, as I have short hair, I wasn't really loving it. Danilo went about my cut quickly and I hadn't even paid for my cut and he was already seeing another client. Nothing's wrong with that, but I just felt the whole cut was, as I said before, rushed. I walked out of Every 6 Weeks not loving my haircut nor the experience. I decided to give my haircut a couple of days, maybe I'd like it better after 24 or 48 hours? Nah. After those 48 hourd did I feel any better about my experience at Every 6 Weeks? Nope. I have been coloring my hair since I was 15 years old, when I first stuck one of those "highlighting" caps on my head and my mom pulled my hair through it with a crochet needle. I went blond then, and was shocked at how Scandanavian I looked. In case you're wondering, I have no idea what my natural hair color is, although pieces of it are gray (damn old age). If you want to judge for yourself with the curtains/carpet argument...all I can say is that I don't put much stock in that theory, for various reasons. Anyway, I got the bright idea a few weeks ago to dye my hair black- mostly because I couldn't find a dark brown that I wanted. And promptly had a heart attack in the shower when my hair looked blue. In case you didn't know, black is the hardest hair color to get out of your hair because apparently it puts in all the other colors. Kind of like when you're a kid and you take a big fist of crayolas and move them in around in a big circle, resulting in a blob the color of post-drinking vomit. When I made my pre-birthday party appointment, I said I wanted cut and color. When I arrived, although I think I dismayed Gregory by my haircolor impulse, he took it in stride, stripped some of the black out, and replaced it with a GORGEOUS espresso color. He then made the tiniest of snips so I could keep my hair "long," and blew it out. All for an EXTREMELY reasonable price. The moral of the story is that although I am often seized by the itch to color myself, I should go to Gregory. Again, because he is friggin AWESOME. And a wonderful co-gossiper to boot. read more

tl;dr: Beware of scheduling mishaps and getting blamed for their errors First, let me say that the haircuts I got from Renato were awesome. And I used to think the service was awesome, too. However, things went very sour tonight. My originally scheduled haircut was cancelled last minute before the holidays due to Renato getting sick. Really unfortunate timing, but I understand things happen. A bit frustrating was that it was going to be two more weeks before he was back in town. Again, unfortunate, but not impossible to deal with. When I called back to get an appointment I spoke to the person who usually manages the appointments -- I think his name is Dennis. He told me the only time he could fit me in was 6:45p on a Saturday night. I was not thrilled given the circumstance that I had already been inconvenienced. And 6:45p was not the most ideal time for me, but I agreed to it. I re-planned my other appointments and dinner plans around being able to get my haircut. On the off chance Renato would be ready early, I even showed up about 45 minutes early! Upon my arrival, though, it became clear that there was some sort of scheduling problem. And this is where the real problem started to arise. It appeared a woman who was getting a chemical treatment of some sort would not be finished by 6:45p. And, as a result, I was not going to get my hair cut today. And I already knew based on our prior conversations that the next available appointment was going to be the next Wednesday at the earliest! Rather than accept fault for the issue, Dennis started to blame me. He suggested that I never had an appointment and that I was supposed to wait for a call from him for a cancellation. In fact, we had agreed to a 6:45 appointment and (given the prior situation when the appointment that had been cancelled on me) I would be given priority for any earlier appointments should one open up. It's actually understandable that the appointment in progress was going to run late over my scheduled time -- things happen. But why wouldn't he fit me in afterward? After all, Dennis already told me that they take the last appointment at 7. So wouldn't starting on me even at 7:15 or so be possible? I know that Renato and others have keys to the shop since sometimes I've had a first appointment before Dennis arrived. Or why didn't Dennis just apologize for his (rather large) error and immediately work to find me another appointment rather than trying to make an excuse for the situation at hand. I don't have much of an inside voice -- ask the people who sit near me in my office and hear me on the phone. And Dennis is a relatively quiet person generally. So apparently he interpreted my attempts to figure out what was going on as some form of hostile engagement. He, literally, showed me to the door. Definitely mad at this point, I made sure to tell Renato that it appeared Dennis had decided for him that I was not even supposed to be a customer. Maybe this wasn't the best behavior on my part, but certainly not anything out of control or that I wouldn't do again. After walking away for a block to cool off, I tried calling back to see if I could go ahead and be rescheduled yet again. However, Dennis refused to answer the phone. So I walked back, knocked on the door, and pointed to the phone. He came outside and told me he wasn't going to be taking my calls and that if I didn't leave he'd call the police. Really? I was standing on the public sidewalk and he's threatening to call the police. This is outrageous treatment of someone who's been a customer for nearly a year (basically since moving to the area). I've showed the utmost patience and understanding on multiple occasions related to prior scheduling errors and even billing issues! I understand that there are plenty of people who need to get a haircut in SF, so my choice to go elsewhere won't hurt their bottom line (or as Dennis might see it their choice not to serve me). But this was a really appalling end to an otherwise pleasant and positive business relationship. read more

This was my second grab into the Yelp bag of well-reviewed hair salons. The first place, located near Mission and New Montgomery, was on par with Supercuts and definitely not worth a return trip. At any rate ... I called Saturday morning to ask about the price ($35 - $40, generally, for a shampoo and cut for men) and to ask if I could come in that day. They offered an appointment within 2 hours of my call that I happily accepted. I was greeted by a friendly gentleman, and able to take a seat right away. It was the first cut I'd had in quite awhile where the buzzer wasn't used as the main workhorse to get the job done. David was my stylist, and he did a good job asking me about how I wanted my hair cut and offered some tips as well that I happily accepted ... picking up some kinda styling stuff to put in my hair (I told him I haven't put any stuff in my hair for "glue" in about 2 years). The price seems fair for the City ... the cut was high quality ... I expect I'll continue to have good experiences here going forward. read more

So I never thought I would have the traditional "my hairstylist totally understands me" kind of experience. I'm a bit shy and I generally just want my hair cut and that's it. If I didn't come away feeling or looking like a fool, I considered the job well done. Then I came to E6W and met Eman. He put my shy, awkward ass at ease and made my hair look the best it ever has! In fact, I've never had a problem getting an appointment within 3 hours. I don't think I'm that picky about most things but it took me years to finally find a shop I'd visit over and over again. This place balances professionalism with kooky San Francisco charm. I've had my hair cut by 3 different stylists. They all did a good and unique job, giving me the cut I wanted. The owner makes and collects art and has a ton of stories about the city as he's been in business for over 20 years I think. I always feel treated with respect and all my interactions have been very friendly. You know how a lot of quality shops are kinda condescending? This is not one of those. They use good products but don't force them on you. I've heard there's a stylist there that's got an ego but I haven't run into them I guess. I am a new SF transplant and have been searching for the right place to go. I thought I had found it but after a friend recommended this place, I won't go anywhere else. I met with Renato. This man is genius. He spent a few minutes talking with me and listening to my normal hair cut speech. He then asked if I would be ok if he made a few slight changes; I could tell he had something in mind and well, this is how you learn if you have found the right person or not. Anyway, I let Renato do his thing. He gave me the wash, the cut, great conversation, a rinse, and style. When I reviewed the work, I thought, "Wow this looks great! But let me see how it styles tomorrow..." Of course, that is the real test. Well, let me tell you! As a man, the times in my life when I have received compliments on my hair cut have been few and far between. Like when I went from shoulder length to short hair. Or when I gave up my 90's wave. Or when I went through a late mundan - Hindu head shaving ceremony. Seriously! But the next day, at the office, not one, not two, but SIX people, men and woman gave me compliments in their own way. "Did you get your hair cut?" "You look great today!" etc. I was blown away. Renato, you are a rock star. I am happy to give you the freedom to do with my head as you wish. The rumors are true...this place is very good. I went there today based on the other yelpers' comments and wasn't disappointed. It's a nice little shop in the Castro and it seems that all of their stylists really do a good job. While getting my cut from Gail (very nice personality and professional...very recommendable), I saw that the other people getting cuts were looking pretty damn good (too? :). Oh, and at no time did a buzzer come out, prefaced with the question of horror: "Do you use a #2 or a #3 on the sides?". No sir, she cut the sides and back the way it should be, with scissors and skill. The prices are reasonable and the quality is high. Edit: After writing the review above, I went back and had a different cutter...Danilo. Didn't quite do what I would call a good cut. Way to short, which was different than the pics I had shown him. Oh well...I'll go again, but ask for Gail. Moved them down to 3 stars for this past visit, though I'm sure they're still a 4 (they just need to prove it to me). Edit2: I've since been back and had my hair cut by Eman, who kicked ass. Also, Danilo seems to have gone the way of the dodo, so I'm raising my rating again. read more

I love this place! Great location and hours are very flexible. The receptionist is very warm and friendly when calling and also in person which is important to me. Renato is my stylist and I am very happy with his technique. He really listens to me and gives me what I want in my haircut. I like that he doesn't use clippers but rather cuts my hair by hand which can be hard to find with men's haircuts. I highly recommend him will be back for many visits!! read more

TISDALE= A true hair STYLIST. When I originally found Tisdale, I was looking for a "fix it" cut. He fixed it. I've been a client for a year now and he's turned me from a brunette into a beautiful blonde starlet. He can cut, he can color, and he's sexy sexy to gaze at while you're in the chair. I would recommend TISDALE to anyone. As a side note, if you color your hair, or have coarse, dry hair, I also recommend asking him about the Keratin Complex. Amazing. Don't be a walk-in. Gail swore up and down that I hated my new haircut because it was shorter than I originally imagined it to be when I first wanted a cut. And at first I was shocked....not because she did something I didn't like but because I hadn't had my hair this short in five or six years. But Gail....I effing love it. It's cute...I can wear it straight like a Vidal Sassoon/Louise Brooks style or spike it in the back for a little 'tude. Update: 5/2009.......Gail is no longer with E6W. I have seen every stylist and while my haircut is hardly complex, they've all satisfied with distinctive, professional work. Currently, I'm attached to Tisdale and can't say enough great things about him. I got hooked up with him a while back via a last minute Saturday appointment and have never looked back. The thinning technique used here was different than other places, and I like the way it's keeping my hair thick but "flat" on my head. And my bangs are not curling like they usually do! I love this place. I have been here a bunch of times and always gotten a really great cut. I have had several of the stylists and all were good but I have to say Tisdale is AMAZING.
