I've been dying my hair fairly regularly for over 10 years and tried a few different stylists over the years. My experience at Salon Monroe was the worst I've had as far as payment goes and one of my least favorite cuts and partials. A friend recommended Kelly Bonica (co-owner) at Salon Monroe to me several times and has been seeing her for years. I finally decided to give her a try for a partial and cut. When I called to schedule, I asked them about the cost and they said it would be $95 for a partial and $40 for a wet cut. Then the receptionist told me I would get 20% off as it was my first time so the total would be $108 - I thought 'sweet!' I went and the salon was clean and nice. I didn't feel very comfortable with the staff but they seemed to be friends with other clients. Kelly went ahead and did the partial after I told her exactly how I wanted it. After, she said it needed toning and she put that in. She convinced me for $10 more to do a 'deep conditioning'. If I knew it was just Bed Head conditioner, I would have passed. She spent a long time on the color but no time on the cut. She didn't thin it out or really cut the layers nicely at all. When she dried the hair to see the color, it was too light and the cut looked awful. Once I got home, I discovered the color was nothing like I asked for and there were blotchy parts and even a dot of bleach in one spot underneath some hair (I noticed while straightening my hair). The cut doesn't style well and the layers are pretty awful. The layers were actually opposite of what I asked for. The worst part of it all was when I went to pay. I even had cash out to tip when the receptionist tells me it will be $185 with $10 off for a friend referral. I quickly told her that I was quoted $108 before my appointment and that I would be given 20% off as a new client so the price should be $116 (I added the deep conditioner). She said there were extra charges for things Kelly did (I was not told). She did end up giving me the 20% off after getting permission from Kelly in the backroom, so I paid $148. I'm sorry but I don't think it is a good business practice to charge a client nearly 40% over what you quoted them. Obviously I wasn't thrilled to pay more for such a below par job. read more

Kelly, the owner, used to work on Newbury St. in Boston before branching out on her own. Last night, I attended the Girl's Night Out sponsored by Shecky's at The Castle at Park Plaza. Salon Monroe was there in full force, giving out free hairstyling sessions and eyebrow waxing. Everyone seemed friendly and I had arrived on a scooter so my hair was a mess and I was eager to take advantage of their services. I was fortunate enough to have my hair styled by Kelly, the owner. She was absolutely lovely, understanding, friendly, informative and professional. I explained to her that I just wanted the front bit (nappy hair) to match the rest (gorgeous curly weave). I told her I had pomade in the front bit (I didn't want to risk damaging her tools) and she told me not to worry and got to work! I reviewed her menu of services as she worked her magic and my jaw dropped. Her pricing is so reasonable! When she was done, my hair looked so sexy and full and blended perfectly with my weave. I was floating on air the rest of the night. I could not have imagined she'd be able to handle my type of hair so well! She gave me a gift certificate for $20 (so that means 4 separate trips plus tip for what I would get done). I HIGHLY, HIGHLY RECOMMEND SALON MONROE!!!!! read more

I hired Kelly from Salon Monroe to do hair for my wedding. I can't speak highly enough of my experience. I've been a client of Kelly for over a year and completely trusted her to do my wedding hair. I'm glad I stuck with my intuition because her work was flawless. She traveled to the hotel the bridal party was staying in, arrived right on time, and stuck to her timeline perfectly. By herself she did me, four bridesmaids, my mother and my stepmother and we were all finished in plenty of time. She made on the spot adjustments and fit in just like one of the girls. Not only is she completely professional but she is relatable, kind, thoughtful and funny. Working with her is FUN and I've never been displeased with anything she's done. I highly recommend Salon Monroe for both every day cuts and color but also for event hair. I was 100% satisfied and would work with her again and again. After taking my mom to Kelly, my mom is planning on continuing to drive to her in the future even though the salon is over an hour away from where she lives. I went to Blondie in Waltham for years and I loved it. What I loved most about it was Kelly. She cut and highlighted my hair for years. She also did my wedding. Hair and makeup for everyone and she did a phenomenal job. So it was only natural when Kelly opened her own shop that I follow her there. When Salon Monroe opened, I went the first week they started doing business. The salon is adorable, nicely decorated and the staff is friendly. I've been having Kelly cut my hair for years and she does an amazing job. I've also had my eyebrows waxed there and they looked awesome! The staff is friendly and they all love what they do. I was in need a of a haircut desperately and I had heard of this new salon from a friend and she raved about it. I was a little skeptical after reading the 1 review on here...(not going to lie it kind of scared me,) but I figured I know the friend and she wouldn't recommend a place if it wasn't worth trying. To my PLEASANT surprise I made an appt. with great ease . I loved that it was easy to find, easy parking and a really nice atmosphere. I was greeted right away and asked what it was I was looking for. I explained to Ryan( the hairdresser that I had my appt. with) what I was thinking of for a haircut and that I am on a new medication that is thinning my hair...I was a bit self conscious about it and to tell anyone...and she was so sweet and understanding and made me feel so comfortable. After our consult she brought me over to the sink area and I told her I had many allergies to shampoos and she took the time to read the ingredients and made sure I was comfortable the whole time. My haircut/style came out GREAT( if I do say say myself) and more importantly I left there feeling good about myself an not feeling so worried about my hair condition due to the new medication I am on. She made my hair look full and healthy. I even got approval from my 17yr old daughter who is my toughest critic. Overall fabulous experience, price was appropriate for the level of experience and knowledge on products was on key. If you want to keep your long hair DO NOT GO TO RYAN at salon Monroe. I asked her to cut off 3 inches and she cut off 5 inches. Before she washed it, we went over what I wanted so I thought she going to listen and before I knew it, all my hair was gone :( Not only is my hair super short but it is also super choppy and looks unnatural. I also asked for side bangs which she DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO CUT!! The right side of my hair is just three levels of all different lengths, I honestly don't even know how to style it. It looks like a five year cut my hair by accident, I am not kidding. I don't usually write yelp reviews but I felt this one was necessary because I want to save people from going to RYAN! if you love your hair and you want to keep its beautiful then I repeat do not go to Ryan, by far one of the worst haircutting experiences of my life. I have been going to Salon Monroe for some time now. I have had my hair cut by Heather and Kelly, and I have to say they always do what I ask. Although, sometimes they suggest taking more off, if I haven;t had it cut in some time, to get rid of dead ends. Your hair does not continue to grow with dead ends. It has always felt healthier after too. I love my hair long, and sometimes having a good trim make it grown faster. I have also had my hair highlited and colored. I have been highliting and coloring my hair for about 15 years, and over time that can cause damage, especially if you are not cutting it a lot. They do a deep conditionar which makes my hair feel amazing. They explain what it is, what it does and the cost. I have also seen Ryan and Amanda for a blow dry. I seriously wish I could afford to have my hair done daily because I always feel like a million bucks. Also I had them do the hair and makeup for my wedding party. I had Kelly for my makeup and all I did was show her a picture of what I was looking for and she seriously made it happen. I will highly recommend Salon Monroe to anyone who asks where I get my hair done. The prices are very reasonable. And they always have specials. read more
