I'm moving to Phoenix soon and I was in town for a week visiting from the SF Bay Area, CA. I scoured yelp pages trying to pick a salon based on photos and reviews. Something struck me about Salon RO5, so I gave them a call. The girl who answered the phone was very friendly and recommended stylist Laura. I called on a Tuesday and was able to get an appointment on Thursday. Almost unheard of where I am moving from, and very much appreciated as I was only in town for the week. First impression upon visiting: Good music playing, beautiful space, friendly face to greet you at check-in. Laura listened to what I wanted (a trim and refreshing of the lob I previously had) and gave me a fabulous cut that left me feeling fresh and beautiful. She was very easy to talk to, and she gave me lots of suggestions for what I should see and do in the area when I am a local! I will definitely be back to see Laura again. Soooo I didn't make the best first impression. Tamara probably thought I was a witch with a capital B. My appointment was late and I was on a break from work. So I was a bit frazzled from that. After we got through the extremely brief awkward period, it was a wonderful experience. I chopped 7 inches from my hair. I haven't cut my hair in 10 years. Next time I need a cut, which won't be 10 years, I'm coming to Tamara. She's professional, sweet and does an AMAZING job. I am in love with my short hair and I NEVER though I would say that. I came across Salon RO5 in a Yelp search after moving to Phoenix from Chicago and in desperate need of refreshed color after quarantine. I walked in without expectations, as it had been months and I was just happy to get my hair colored, but walked out feeling like my best self and with a new friend in Jo! From the second I sat down in her chair, Jo made me feel comfortable and safe with the salon's COVID precautions, and her questions and conversation made me feel like I had made a new friend in town. I have since returned many times, and always look forward to not only the improved outcome of the color and cut, but to catching up with a friend. The salon itself is intimate and the chairs are very well spaced apart, with the front desk staff taking temperature checks at the door. Went here hoping for the best since my hair was already pretty light and although though I had a lot going on there really wasn't reason why my hair wouldn't of came out significantly bright. I realized more than likely I wasn't going to like my hair once I asked big if he want going to foil my hair because I know my hair doesn't lift much at all with it not being foiled well I guess balayage doesn't go foiled thats what Noah told me even though everytime ive gotten this done theyve foiled it. Well I decided to still let him continued and as he kept talking about my hair how hard the color underneath was I knew I wasn't going to be happy with the results, now when he showed me my hair I was ok about it because I didn't wanna be rude so I remained optimistic but there was only tiny highlight in the front and although I was on a budget of 200$ this didn't feel like a 200$ job but i left and told him I like it. Once I got home I realize I hated it its orangy and as I part it there no other color or brightness my root is dark and wasn't blended in or touched with color or toner to give it a nice blend I'm sad that I didn't get close to the look I wanted I won't be returning. read more

I have now been to this salon 3 different times, and each time I get something completely different from what I asked for. This time was the worst by far. My hair was fading from a recent glaze and I asked for a rich brunette color. The stylist acted like she completed understood after I showed her multiple inspiration pics. As soon as she finished washing my hair I knew it was too dark. My hair was black. Not a dark brown but jet black. I expressed my concern and the stylist proceeded to argue with me regarding the color of my hair and made me go outside to show me that the color was not actually black, which of course it was. Unfortunately I had to go somewhere else the day of my graduation to get it fixed. Overall terrible experience. read more

Ana is an angel! I have never found someone who could cut my extremely curly hair the right way so I have never stepped out of my hair comfort zone. Well yesterday I decided to do so and it was easy to with Ana. I went from 2 feet of curls to almost 2 inches. She made me feel comfortable and really knew what she was doing. Noah has been my stylist for at least 5 years. This location is more than 20 miles from home and worth the drive. The products, ambiance and staff make it worth my while to make this trip every 6 weeks. Be clear and concise on what you want and you will not be disappointed. I went here based on the many good reviews on Yelp, not sure why my experience was not good. Tamara was my stylist. After being asked last minute mind you to come in 15 min early for my appointment, which I did, I was left sitting in the waiting area til almost my appointment time. What gives? Why ask me to come early? When Tamara approached, she didn't appear too friendly or in a good mood. I had brought several pics with me to help convey what I wanted in my haircut. Tamara actually got testy telling me that they were each different pictures and what did I really want. So much for any patience or communication skills. I told her that there were aspects in each picture I liked that I would like to put together in to one haircut. She didn't really seem to interested in what I wanted. She gave me the haircut which I could tell right away was a poor one. There were uneven parts and some uneven layers. Her whole demeanor from start to finish was cold and unfriendly, not the least bit like what you think of when you think of a hair stylist. Usually warm and talkative. She also clearly disregarded me when I told her I did not want product in my hair. She put quite a bit in anyways. Truly disrespectful. I tried to figure out why she was like this - did I do something? - but then realized it was all on her. She was like this from the moment she walked up to 'greet' me - late by the way. To add insult to injury, I paid top dollar for a haircut from a stylist who does not even have that many years of experience. I can't remember now if it was $55 or $60 for what I received. Plus a 20% tip - I should have tipped less darn it. I tipped more in case I wanted to come back for a 'tweak' to the bad haircut, but then later deemed it too risky to let her touch my hair again! After trekking to downtown Phoenix, I don't recommend coming to this salon. I mean Tamara's station is right next to the owner's and he didn't seem to pay attention to what was happening with us. He may be a good stylist himself (don't know), but he did not seem to care much about what goes on in other areas. read more

Okay, so I'm basically pathological and haven't cut more than 2 inches off my hair in over 20 years. I'd been toying with the idea of cutting a bunch off and getting a long bob. After looking at these Yelp reviews, I saw that Tamara was undoubtedly my girl and booked an appointment with her. I thought I was going to be completely traumatized cutting off so much of my hair (my hair was almost to my booty), but somehow--like a magical, beautiful wizard--Tamara made me feel calm as she chopped away my old, long witchy hag hair. Y'all, I've never liked a haircut I've gotten. Ever. And I was sure I'd instantly regret my crazy decision to cut so much off. It seems impossible to me, but I am ECSTATIC over how it turned out. I have never really sought to have very stylish hair. I have straight, medium bodied, brown, white-guy hair with a mean cowlick at the part and a thinning double crown. As you can imagine, there isn't a whole lot you can do with a head of hair like that. I've been around. I've been to chains and colleges, old-timer barber shops with 30 year clients, and classy barber shops with the bourbon, mahogany and hot shaves. I've been to trendy, organic and alt chic salons. Through it all, I walk out with a typical guy cut -- longer on top with a fade on the sides. Sure, I'm open to suggestion as well as whimsey. And while it does change a bit in length and style, its always pretty standard. The results of these grooming adventures have varied from "holy shit, get the trimmer" to "hey there handsome, what's your name? *mirror wink*" But never in all my years of hair-taming have I said, "damn... this is the best haircut I've ever had." until going to Ro5. Now then, my stylist Noah is a nice guy. He's professional. I'm treated like a valued customer. He massages my scalp during the wash, carries a good conversation, invites me to come in for a free cleanup every couple weeks and offers me free Lola coffee. Those things are great, and appreciated, but not unexpected at a price point of $35 (though SMS or email appointment reminders would be nice!). While those things are not unique to Ro5, the reason that I have had multiple best haircuts here (yes, some men can achieve "multiple best haircuts") comes down to a few special ingredients. 1. Noah does not just give me a hair cut, he creates something unique to me that turns the various idiosyncrasies of my hair and scalp into strengths and features of the style. For example, he leaves the hair longer in the back to compensate for a steep decline toward my neck and blends it so that its not noticeable but still manages to improve the perception of my head shape. He uses the direction in which the hair grows in different areas to inform a more manageable style. My cowlick has been turned into a shelf that holds the style in place and traditional symmetry can be abandoned in order to balance the overall look with my face and head shape (no I do not look like the guy from the Goonies). 2. Great communication. If I come in with an idea of what I want, he won't just go for it, he will talk me through it. Give me comments on what components of the concept will work with my hair and head. He will show me different options and let me choose. And if we have spent 30 or 40 minutes on one particular style and I or he isn't happy with it at the end, he will go back to the drawing board and send me home with something that works. Sure, its expected that he respect when I feel like it is done and looks fine, but at the same time, he won't bullshit me if I ask for his opinion. 3. It ages well. I'm not really sure if this is a result of #1 or something that he considers while he is cutting, but I've never had hair cuts that look so good while they are growing in before. Traditional awkward phases and funky spots that I have come to expect are somehow circumnavigated and I'm able to keep a coiffure that looks styled with minimal effort throughout the 5 or 6 weeks I usually take to get back in there. I should probably say at this point that I do not work at or with Ro5 and I am not friends with anyone who works there, outside of the banter I have with Noah while I'm getting my hair cut. I only went in the first place on account of the close proximity to my home and the positive yelp reviews. I simply wanted to give credit where credit is due. And thus, I highly recommend Ro5. Try it out for a few sessions and see if it works for you. read more

Hats of to Yelp for pointing me in the direction of Salon RO5. As usual, I decided at the last minute that I needed my locks bobbed. So I called up Salon RO5 and they got me in and, I got Tamara, whose reputation precedes itself in the Yelposphere. I know I've said this a million times, as I've wandered aimlessly between barbers, salons and all of the above but I think I've FINALLY nailed it with Tamara. She is the penultimate professional. She asks a lot of questions about what I did with my hair and what I wanted. Instead of getting a dull acknowledgement that I have gotten so many times before, she gave me her game plan of what she was going to do with my hair. SOLD! I don't always know what I want to do with my hair...I go to a stylist so they can help me decide what to do....they're the professionals....RIGHT? Anyway, I FINALLY feel like I can go to Tamara, ask her her opinion on what I should do, and she'll come up with something amazing. I've been to her twice and it's amazing, on my second visit, all that she remembered about me. That really says something. And she's a GREAT conversationalist: really genuine cool stuff, not lame awkward small talk that is so often the case during a haircut. She is really awesome, boys and girls. I recommend wholeheartedly. For what you pay, Salon RO5 trumps any other place I've been to: you get high quality products, a KILLER head massage during your shampoo and conditioning, and 100% professional, expert service. I have paid over $40 for an inferior haircut compared to $25 here for a top-knotch, bang up job. SO happy I found this place. I didn't find RO5 on Yelp, I found it because it's next to one of the best coffee shops in town. But now that I've been, I'm there to stay. The Hair. The first cut Brian gave me probably took a full half an hour to 40 minutes. He was meticulous and cautious. Everyone has different hair, and I appreciate him taking his time and not playing fast and loose with my shitty hair. I've gone places before where they lop off too much too quickly and it ends up standing straight out for a few weeks. Since then it's been an easy 25 minutes and bing bang boom we're in business. The complementary follow-up cut is awesome. I always start getting shaggy around the back and ears and a quick trim up is one of the best services a salon can offer. The Man. Brian is the man. I hate awkward, forced conversations with people I can't relate to. I came here cause one of the stylists, Tamara, needed hair models to complete her stylist training. I was there for color, hair cut and style. I must share that Tamara did a fantastic job with my hair. The most promising part is her passion for the profession and she has fantastic, warm people skills which I hope will not diminish as the year passes. I enjoyed getting to know her a bit while she spent time on my hair. I felt listened to when I was telling her my concerns. The hair massage was terrific. She used great products on me. I liked the cut and the style. Tamara the stylist was terrific. The only part that left me a little unsettled was as I went to leave, she casually mentioned that I had to pay for the products that were used and the receptionist asked if I wanted to leave a tip. Hmmmm, having to pay for the products used was never mentioned to me in all the correspondences I had with her. I am there to be her hair model to help her become a full stylist and I'm being asked to pay for hair products used and for a tip? In other situations where I've been a hair model, not only was I not asked to pay for anything, I was thanked with a gift bag! I'm sure I would have been okay with it all if I was informed of it from the beginning. It just felt like I was hit with a hidden charge. I paid the $15 and unfortunately left not feeling 100% happy. I'm new to the valley and went to Salon Ro5 based on it's great reviews on Yelp. The environment was clean, and the head massage was great. BUT, I paid $55 for a haircut that was nothing extravagant or special (I have NO problem paying that amount for a great cut). I was very specific about what I wanted and only got it partially (the stylist trimmed my bangs about an inch too short and chopped them in a way that left them unblended with the rest of my hair--this was the one thing I was obnoxiously specific about NOT doing. My husband also went in to get a basic gentleman's cut, and again, it was nothing excellent or more than mediocre. The stylist also tended to get defensive whenever my husband or I mentioned specifics about what we wanted for his hair. Over all, I did not get the impression that this salon or stylists do more than follow your specific requests very poorly, and the customer service was lacking. I have been going to VOLR for about eight months. It has been the only salon that I have gone to since moving to Phoenix a year ago. I started getting my hair done by Trini, and enjoyed my experience. He is no longer at this location, but I believe in supporting my local neighborhood businesses. So, I decided to give Alex a try because I have noticed that his clients always leave the chair with beautiful hair color. Today, I was one of those clients. As soon as I left the salon, I went into Lola's to buy a Matador and I received a compliment about my hair from the barista :) More importantly, this evening while playing with my hair, I realized that I have been trying to get sun-kissed, natural highlights for about two years and finally had them. I think that this hair experience was successful because Alex is super patient. He really listens to your requests and asks many clarifying questions, which I think is a great sign of communication. I have lived in the neighborhood for 16 years and recall when VOLR came around MANY years ago. It's only now that I checked this place out. This past Wednesday I had an appointment scheduled for a color and cut with Noah. Honestly, I didn't know what to do and who to trust after the untimely loss of my previous hairdresser/friend. I took a chance. Threw caution to the wind... and ended up in Noah's chair. Noah's quite the gentleman and consummate professional. I came in with nasty grey roots and hair that was dying to receive a cut. I brought my iPhone and pulled up my Pinterest app where I'd collected many photographs of hair styles that I liked... and one that I did not like. (I like to make sure that my stylist TRULY understands what I'm going for). I feel that I'm realistic in my expectations and after discussing where we'd like to go with my hair, on this very first time together, Noah goes to work. I won't take you through all of the details, but I am very VERY happy with the results. I never expect to get out of a salon with less than 3 hours of work... and Wednesday was no exception. Seriously, I don't mind. I was glad to have fun conversation with my new stylist... If you're going to spend a significant amount of time with your stylist, you'd better be comfortable with them. VOLR is a beautiful salon inside. There's good music playing. And it's very "downtown", which I, of course, love. Hooray Local! Just a 1/4 of a mile from my home!!!! I found myself a stylist and a place that I believe will be my new salon. Prices are definitely reasonable too! Oh, one slight downside... and I don't mean to bust chops here... but the magazine selection could use some updating. Some of those magazines were a year old. Glad that I had my iPhone. I have been going to Salon Ro5 since 2018 and Kristen Thomas is my stylist. I started her services after doing a ton of research. I am someone who can't just show up as a walk in to find a random stylist. My hair is important and my stylist is in a long term relationship with me. Since my last stylist of 5 years wasn't working out and I didn't have referrals on where to go, I had to do research. I found Salon RO5 since they were downtown (close to my house) but looked clean and forward thinking. What I liked most is they provide information on each stylist, highlighting their areas of expertise and background. Kristen met my needs in what I was looking for in a stylist, so she was easy to contact for an initial consult. The salon is located in a great area, easy parking, with clean styling stations and a friendly receptionist (Jessica always greets me with a smile, knows my name, and wears fun makeup!). They are flexible with schedule changes and I love their bumble and bumble product offering. I have since moved to Scottsdale but am committed to Salon RO5 and Kristen. Very nervous finding a new stylist. Read reviews and chose the salon, love the urban atmosphere. Parking was tough since it was late afternoon, there is a garage but was packed and all the side streets were full for over a block, so allow time to park. I wanted a change since I'll be turning 50 in a few weeks. I met with Keith, he listened to what I was looking for, gave me suggestions, helped me choose complimentary colors for base and highlights and adjusted a style from a picture I'd brought in. I couldn't be happier with the results! The color is natural, the style suits my face well, I've heard so many great compliments from co-workers, how they love the style and that it makes me look younger, just what I needed to hear! I love this salon! Carmen is AMAZING! Request her if you want someone who will listen to you! My first appointment at VolR was with another stylist and I was not happy AT ALL. I hated my color and the style was not me. So I was hesitant to go back a second time but I had found out that stylist went to another salon and I decided to give it another go. I got Carmen and she listened to how I liked my hair. Maybe she just understood my hair but I could tell she was listening. She is a blast too, funny and full of life! What's more! I had a bang crisis when I was expected to be filming for national television! I ran in and she was available and she made my hair amazing and the filming went so well! I see her regularly and I'm not afraid to recommend her to friends! When I sent my friend to see her when my friend was having a bad day, Carmen totally made my friend's day! After seeing the near perfect reviews on Yelp and Facebook, and a recommendation from a friend, I was interested in seeing how good this salon really is. So I scheduled my appointment on April 29, and I received a call that I would be delayed by an hour, but someone was courteous enough to call and let me know ahead of time. I was interested in redoing my hairstyle, and asked the stylist for advice for a hairstyle I wanted and suited me based on my head shape and hair type. The haircut was done well, and I had a decent conversation with my stylist. The next day however, I find that my hair was uneven. Some of my hair was shorter on the left side of my head while the rest was longer. I had high expectations going in, but I'm mildly disappointed with how things turned out. I feel like I paid $28 for a $9 haircut. read more

Love this place! Came here a few years ago when my stylist wouldn't chop my hair off for me. I've had great experiences with everyone here, but Tamara is officially my new stylist. She knows what I want, even when I don't. I have been going to VOLR Salon for three years now which shows you how good they are, because I'm from Scottsdale and really like everything to be no more than 10 minutes from home. However, I had gone to several salons over the years in Scottsdale and was never really happy with my hair color. The salon was recommended by a friend and I'm so grateful! Since I've been going to VOLR's my color and cut always come out so beautiful and natural. I'm a natural blonde but don't go in the sun any more and its hard to get highlights to look natural. I get compliments on my hair color all the time. Driving 20 minutes to VOLR's for me is so worth the drive. All the stylists are dedicated and really take the time to address your needs. First, I have to say I called to make an appointment at 4:00PM and was pleasantly surprised when the receptionist asked if 6 o'clock would be ok! I was more than excited to get in the same day. Laura was my stylist. We talked about what I wanted and she knew exactly what I wanted and actually did even better than I thought. We had great conversation the entire appointment. The vibe of the salon is pretty trendy but unique as well. I can't say enough about my new hair! I will definitely be coming back to this salon and to Laura. We already discussed some fun color for next time. Do yourself a favor and book your appointment, you won't regret coming to RO5. It pains me to write this review. I am afraid that more people will find out about Brian - making it more difficult for me to make an appointment with him. With a slightly weird textured hair (imagine a chia pet head with cowlicks), I had always resorted to a very short hairstyle. After being chastised by my wife for perpetually sporting the army recruit look, I presented Brian with the monstrosity that is my hair. After 8 visits, I am happy to report that for the first time in my life, I have a medium-length haircut that is both easy to style and professional. Brian is a perfectionist. He listens well, takes his time, and is talented with both clippers and scissors. I wish I had found him earlier. Front desk staff has always been professional and makes you feel welcome. All of the 8 appointments were met with little to no wait. I am just glad that after 12 months of searching, I stumbled across this salon. read more
