I have been going to Sam for about a year now. I found her at her old salon and, even though Salon SLS is a drive for me, I followed Sam there. I have dark hair that had gotten very thin and dry over the years due to medication I had to take for cancer treatment. The first time I met her she recommended Phyto products for me that would strengthen and lengthen my hair. One year later, my hair is thicker, shinier and less dry than it has been in years! She also recommended the Amika products that work best with me hair, I really like those as well. As far as color goes, we did balayage last year and I absolutely loved it. I wanted a light-ish caramely color that would not be too harsh/drying, or have too much contrast for the dark brown that my hair is. It was exactly what I wanted and it came out lovely. When I decided to go back dark last month (b/c I always change my mind...) Sam suggested we go a bit lighter brown just in case I wanted to add the balayage back in the future, it wouldn't be so damaging to my hair. My super dark brown hair is now a lighter, richer brown than its natural color, and I absolutely love it. I saw a review below about Sam not doing balayage on dark hair well, or something, and can assure you this is not the case. I would not hesitate to recommend Sam to anyone. Sam is very thoughtful, knowledgeable and thorough stylist that knows a great deal about texture, color, etc. You will not be disappointed! read more

I have had several great experiences with Sam at Salon SLS. I have darker hair and like to experiment with new shades of brown and highlights. Sam always talks me through what to expect and helps me decide what will look best before we begin, every time. I switched to Sam after a friend whose hair I always admired referred me. My former stylist often missed gray hairs during root touch-ups and full colors, and that never happens with Sam! I always walk out of the salon feeling happy, refreshed and beautiful. This salon is a hidden gem in Northern VA! Staff is very welcoming, super easy to make an appointment and they offer amazing products. I highly recommend Sam in particular. She is a very talented stylist and is the only person I trust to do my hair. I've been going to Sam since 2017 and even had her do my hair for my wedding. What I love about Sam is if you are unsure of what you want she always has great recommendations based on your hair type, ease of styling, etc. My only complaint is that I wished the salon was closer, but it's definitely worth the trip! read more

Do not go here for a balayage or babylight if you have dark hair. This is the second appointment I had with Sam. After giving her the benefit of the doubt following a mediocre first session, I left again even more disappointed, not just by the results but her customer service. My hair is streaky, brassy, and damaged. When I tried to come to a resolution with her, instead of being understanding and professional, she was degrading. In business in general, people are supposed to get used to having uncomfortable conversations with their clients sometimes. How people react to these kinds of conversations speak volumes about how they run their business. Instead of trying to speak to me professionally, she was immediately defensive and used an ad hominem approach in response to me. She refused to take ownership of her mistake and blamed my hair, when in reality it was because of her poor time management skills and her lack of knowledge working with dark hair. Because she had a client booked right after me and was running out of time, she washed the bleach out of my hair before it was ready, and at one point there were two different people working on my hair (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I felt like it was because the process was being rushed and because she couldn't work on my hair herself). read more
