Wow Re-model looks really amazing, and modern! I have stopped in here before during the East Village Promenade and my lady has had some services done here. If you want a high end spa type day (think hair, nail, eyebrows, make-up, relaxation) this is a land mark spot in the east village of Des Moines! I recently took a tour of the facilities and wow, I was impressed. They have been recognized by some of the top beauty magazines, Like Elle and Salon Today. They specialize in making someone feel like a million bucks! They do bridal parties, and even have a men's grooming package! One thing I thought was cool, is they have a new relaxation room, where you can rent a room to just rejuvenate, and or get services done! I, like many women, am very particular about my hair and fear the need to change hairstylists. I used to travel to Kansas City just to get my hair cut because I loved the lady I went to there. Even after I moved to Atlanta, GA, I still traveled to Kansas City. It just became unrealistic to travel to KC anymore. I needed to find a new place to go. The past reviews on here scared me a bit but I found other reviews online that were good so I thought I would give them a try. Upon entering, they give you a questionnaire to learn more about you and your hair. It is optional to fill out but I put a lot down. They offer water, tea or wine and then they consult with you on what you want for your cut. Next is a head massage, paraffin hand dip and wash. Then the cut and style. It all ended with a make-up touch up. I have curly/wavy hair and Mollie did a wonderful job! I loved the way my hair looked when I left. The true testament in my opinion is what it looks like when I style it. I was able to make my hair look great too! I'm pretty sure I have found my new hairstylist in Mollie! read more

I have been to this salon 3-4 times now and in the end I have spent over $1,200 and my hair looks the worst it has ever looked. The color has always been off, and the cut never matched what I had requested, and I always went home with products that were not the right products for my hair type. The salon has a great design, the staff is friendly (although have limited knowledge of their products) and they offer complimentary beverages, and hand message/ wax. The salons philosophy is to have separate stylist's for the color and cut...feels like a disconnection happens and you feel like you are part of an assembly line. I also feel like it results in an inefficiency and one spends HOURS in the salon. Also, you can select the experience level of the stylist's as well; however I felt the lower level stylist's were definitely not worth what you spend. I recently was recommemded to another salon where they corrected the color and I am much happier with the style; which will require a few more cuts and growing out to completely fix. At a get-together the other day I showed a picture of my hair prior to going to Salon W and I received shocked comments... Not a feel good moment. One friend indicated she had gone through the same experience at the salon. In short, an expensive salon with friendly staff that seem barely knowledgeable (especially staff at the front desk) of the products, great energy, but you leave feeling like you spent too much money and time to be disappointed on your look. read more

I would 1,000% recommend this place! I called in last minute for a cut and color after my appointment somewhere else canceled last minute in me. They said they could get me in for a cut but a color wasn't available. I agreed to the cut appointment and explained what kind of color I wanted in case they had a cancellation. The receptionist said that he would see if they could squeeze something in for me. When I got to my appointment and after explaining again what kind of color I was looking for, my stylist Nick called a colorist over and she was able to get me in at the sane time. My entire experience there was hands down amazing! They were also open about pricing every step of the way! I never had to ask or question is this going to be really expensive!Everyone was extremely nice that I came in contact with and made me feel so welcomed! I came to Salon Spa W for the first time to get my hair colored after hearing so many great things from family and friends. It was above and beyond my expectations. I went in for a color with Candice and couldn't of been more pleased. She was so nice and easy to talk to which made the experience even more enjoyable. The color turned out perfect, and my hair feels the healthiest it ever has after a color. Candice recommended having the Olplex treatment done, and I am so happy with the results after using the take- home product for a few weeks. I look forward to each and every visit to Salon Spa W because it's the perfect break in my day when I get to unwind and be pampered. On my very first visit, they spent time with me learning about my hair, preferences, products that I use, etc. I really appreciated that. When you arrive to each visit, you can get a beverage (water, tea, wine). Not only do you get a hair cut, you also get a scalp/shoulder massage, parrafin dip for your hands, and a make-up touch-up at the end. I even got a hand & arm massage while waiting for deep conditioning treatment. They don't miss anything! I have naturally curly hair and Mollie has been my stylist since I started going to Salon Spa W. She's fabulous and always takes the time to ensure that I like the length, and that the overall shape is appropriate. I used to worry about having someone cut my curls, but I totally trust Mollie and am always comfortable with her recommendations and cuts! I also love the Salon's reminder system. I get an email, text, and phone call up to 10 days prior and leading up to my appointment, so I always have plenty of warning if I forgot to write the appointment on my calendar. read more

Salon W and I had a great run together until sadly, it came crashing down [insert lyrics to any Taylor Swift song here]. Overall, it is a pretty awesome salon. It's well decorated, they have tea/champagne available during your service, and have qualified and professional staff (for the most part but see below). Now for the negative rating: I've been getting my eyebrows waxed at least once a month for the last 10 years or so. I've been to super high end salons and sketchy nail places that may or may not be operating illegally, and everything in between (this is what happens when you live in 7 cities in 4 years). More or less, my eyebrows have experienced all the highs and lows that come with going to new esthetician every few months. Salon W, despite being arguably the nicest salon in Des Moines managed to be the worst of them all though. They gave me a casual 2nd degree burn deep into my eyelids and spanning the length of my brows, not quite the look I was going for. The woman at the salon was simply careless and instead of putting wax on my brow bone and carefully removing it section my section, she slathered wax across my entire brow bone and eyelid and ripped it all away in one swoop leaving some really unflattering burn marks. To be fair though, she does AMAZING hair cuts. In case you're wondering, I did give Salon W a call about the incident. They promised me a call back from the GM but I never got one. Shows their real dedication to customer service but ya know, YOLO. Honestly, the fact that the GM didn't bother to follow up is the only reason I dropped them down to two stars. Moral of the story: Salon W gives a nice haircut but doesn't make the cut in the waxing department or customer service/apologies for making you look like a freakish zombie with multicolored burned eyelids. read more

I moved to Iowa from the East Coast about 1 1/2 years ago. I am very picky about my hair, which is naturally brown / red and as fine and straight as it gets. I've struggled all my life finding a stylist who would not only cut my hair, but would help me come up with a plan for that haircut as to what would look good for my type of hair and my level of preferred maintenance (which is zero). I had someone recommend this Salon, and I called to get an appointment. I asked for one of the most experienced stylists, since I'm not playing games with my hair. I had to wait a very long time to get in for an appointment, but when I did, it was worth the wait. I had to fly back to the east coast for a few haircuts in between, but such is life. I doubt I will let anyone cut my hair ever again other than Katie Jo. I'm very confident the other stylists are qualified, but she gets me and gets my hair. She understand what it takes to make a good haircut based on your face shape, hair type, styling desires and abilities. Not all stylists are that skilled. This Salon seems to focus highly on education and precision. All of the stylists, colorists, etc. are constantly being trained and learning new techniques. This is so important and it obviously shows in the quality of work they produce. Katie Jo has kept my short hair manageable, helped me choose and cut clip in extensions (which look amazing and real), educated me on growing out my hair for my wedding and has been a trusted adviser for me on all things hair and beauty. The Salon is impeccably clean (I used to work at an impeccably clean salon, so I know what to look for), everyone is friendly and helpful, they sell quality products and do not up-sell you, or try to convince you to buy crap and services you don't need. With a basic cut you get some great additions at no charge like a delightful scalp massage, hand massage and moisturizing hand treatment. I've had a few of the spa services done and all of the things have been great- and remember, I am very picky (some might even call me a snob, to be fair). I've booked my wedding day of hair for myself and all of my bridesmaids, no way we would go elsewhere. I am also planning on getting airbrush makeup from one of their skilled makeup artists. If you are looking for the best Salon, you've found it. Waiting for an appointment will be worth it in the end. read more

Definitely impressed with this Des Moines Salon. I came here out of the blue one day after trying to find a place I trust to trim my asymmetrical bob. I'm so glad I did..I made the right choice! There's an appointment scheduler online that makes it very easy to book, and I got a call from an employee very quickly to confirm a time. Also, they text you a reminder too! When I walked into the salon, I was highly impressed with the quality of customer service there. You are offered wine, coffee, or tea when you enter and they make you are as comfortable as possible. I loved all their complimentary services such as the scalp massage, wax on the hands, etc. I had Ali do my hair and I highly recommend her! She definitely knew what I wanted and succeeded in making my hair look great. They do a great job of making you feel relaxed and comfortable here. I just attended my first haircut appointment with Salon W, and I was beyond impressed! I could tell from the start that company truly cares about their product as a whole, as well as their customers. As other reviewers have said, the friendly receptionist started out with some paperwork (checking for skin allergies as such - smart!), then a tour of the salon and offered complimentary water/tea/wine. My stylist Anna was fantastic. She asked great questions regarding my style and preferences before we started and after the scalp/shoulder massage (a proper one too, not a quick here and there and done like some salons that offer complimentary "massages") and the hair wash, she offered a paraffin hand wax (first time I've had one - felt great!). We chatted very easily while she cut and once she blew it out was able to do some fine-tuning to bits of the length that I wanted just a bit shorter. She gave me her card at the end and helped me with a couple questions I had about the hair products. Very lovely woman and great at her job. I'm very picky about my hair, as I had the same stylist for many years until she retired, and have been in search of one I want to stick with for a few years now. I can safely say I've found it! I love that their website is very clear about the "levels" of stylists and colorists they have, so I was able to request a slightly higher level stylist (since I don't mind paying a bit more), which I appreciated. I never thought I would find my ultimate salon in Des Moines, Iowa, but I definitely did. If you've been to other Aveda/Douglas J salons before, this place is just like that, only 10X more professional and experienced. From the beginning to end, this was a fantastic experience. Making an appointment was very easy (text reminders AND online forms!), and coming in was equally as pleasurable. I was greeted with kindness and an offer for coffee, tea, or wine (no question!) which just made me feel even more pampered. A simple haircut comes with a head/neck massage, paraffin wax for your hands, and even a make-up touch-up if you prefer. Overall, you will be hard pressed to find a salon that employs talented AND friendly stylists, is reasonably priced (I paid $37), and is fun, stylish, and clean. I've been to my stylist Ali twice, and she is absolutely wonderful. I not only left with amazing haircuts each time, both which were pretty drastic, she also took time to walk me through how to style my hair different ways. She listened to my concerns and thoughts, suggested subtle changes, and never pushed products on me. I absolutely recommend Ali to anyone who chooses Salon W. That being said, the general manager leaves a lot to be desired. I mentioned to Ali that the gloss I had previously had done by a colorist washed out within two weeks (which my poor towels can attest to), and she offered to let the manager know. I had glosses previously done years ago that would gradually faded, so it was shocking how quickly it washed out. I received no information from the colorist regarding care for my hair, I'm assuming because she had another client after me and sped through the last half of my appointment. It wasn't until I mentioned to a coworker how disappointed I was in the color that she said it was probably because I wasn't using products for color-treated hair, something I completely forgot from my previous experiences with coloring. The general manager called me a week later to follow up and said glosses only last a week or two, especially if I have coarse hair, and that I would need to have permanent color done if I wanted it to last longer. The information provided was absolutely incorrect - glosses should last 6 to 8 weeks typically - and absurd. He also told me I should have mentioned something within 10 days of my coloring appointment. After he continued to tell me glosses last only a week, he eventually offered to credit me for a gloss or color treatment, which I declined. I will not be returning to Salon W, which is an absolute pity because I know they have many talented hair stylists. I was upset I wasn't provided information regarding the care for my new color and was not pleased with the treatment I received by the general manager over the phone. The general manager should accept a customer's concerns seriously and provide a consultation, not argue with them. read more

I visited Salon Spa W partially as a birthday treat to myself (get all pampered and what not). I fell in love! Molly did a great job for my haircut. She asked a bunch of questions before she started cutting. We looked through a bunch of pictures and pointed out what I liked and wanted so she could see what I was after. It was nice to get my hands dipped in paraffin and have it set while my hair was cut. The pedicure was just as amazing. Sarah did a fabulous job and was the perfect consultant on how to keep my feet loved and pampered all year around. Her work was professional and kept all the product clean as she should. I can't wait to see her again. The only off-putting thing was scheduling. Maybe it was a bad day. However when I called, I reached an answering machine telling me to leave a message and they would get back to me. I think it was almost two days before I heard from someone. There was certainly more I could do to get it scheduled sooner. And I don't know if that was standard practice or just a bad day. Regardless, my visit was amazing. I can overlook the scheduling silliness as long as the visits stay awesome. read more

I came to Salon W because it's one of the few places in Des Moines that does a no-chip manicure. I get no-chip manicures fairly regularly in Chicago so I searched one out in Des Moines. I'm kind of a perfectionist about my nails (which is why you get a manicure right?) so I was disappointed with what I would consider a kind of sloppy application of the gelish (no-chip product) The edge of the polish is not straight and smooth on a few nails, it looks like she smudged another one and didn't fix it, and there was a bubble or some other bump on another nail that's really noticeble and annoying. And for what they're charging, I won't be coming back. The hair cut was better, Elle was the stylist. Although I thought I was clear about exactly what I wanted I still ended up with a much blunter cut than what I had explained. I can't totally blame her because she cut it after she had straightened it and it looked pretty good then. 1 wash later and it looked a lot different. I might go back for another haircut and be more persistent about texturizing it, but maybe not. read more

I finally had my official 1st appointment since the Yelp party at the Salon. A week out before the appointment I received a phone call from the salon manager. She let me know that the person that I had my appointment with unfortunately was no longer with them. She asked if I wanted to keep my appointment with another stylist. I was a little nervous, but I said yes. She seemed please and said they would take care of me The couple days before the appointment I did receive a call reminder and text reminder the night of. They are really helping you not forget your appointments. This is a good thing. I arrived a little before the appointment. They welcomed me back and a smile and offered a drink. As I relaxed a little they had me review their rules and sign. They do have a charge if you do not give 24 hours notice on a cancelation of your appointment. They like you to arrive 15 min prior to your appointment and if you are late they will try and do what they can, but really, be early. As I was sitting the lady next to me who was also waiting struck up a conversation. She loves this place. She had been to another Aveda salon and she said that they differ so much. The last place had fried her hair from leaving in the color to long. She said that would never happen here because all these different people work as a team. There are people to greet you, bring you drinks, attend to you in different manners depending on your needs. There are stylist and their are people who color your hair and so on. I was shortly greeted by my stylist for the evening. She was very sweet and asked what we were looking at doing that evening. We went over what I was looking for then she gave me a scalp and neck massage. We moved from the chair to go dip my hands in wax and have my hair washed. mmmmm - this felt good too. You don't realize how much you miss a good scalp or head massage til you are getting one. Back in the chair I get my hair cut and then its dried and styled. She was very sweet and talkative the whole time. She always made sure I was comfortable and that things were looking ok. She was taking about 4 inches of hair off so I think she was really making sure that I wasn't going to miss too much of my hair. She styled and really did a good job and then did a touch up on my make up before I left. They did a great job and my hair looks great. They ended up not charging me due to the change of the stylist. I booked my next appointment and really look forward to working with her again. Maybe Ill try one of their other services as well! read more

I can't say enough good things about Salon Spa W. A lifelong hairstylist-hopper, I finally asked two of my friends who did their hair, and they both answered Salon Spa W! I visited two other stylists before I decided that Anna was the perfect fit for me. The other sylists I visited were both talented and gave great cuts, but chatting with Anna felt like chatting with an old friend. She gave me an asymmetrical bob that is trendy and fun, but still jives with my uber-professional job. I never loved my hair until I met Anna! Salon Spa W is a departmentalized salon, which means that each stylist focuses on either cuts or color. After a great cut with Anna, I recently visited Lance for highlights. I have a unique skin tone, face shape, and hair texture, so I brought about ten photos of what I was looking for. After a thorough consultation, Lance started my color. My hair is porous and took the color much more quickly than either of us anticipated, leaving me with a lighter color than we planned. Curious to see if it would grow on me, I left the salon. I decided I did want it a bit darker like the photos I showed, so I called back the next morning. Salon Spa W was so gracious to fit me in within an hour to tone down my hair - and for free! Lance didn't make me feel the least bit awkward about having to come back in, and I left with amazing color. That's service! Highlights: + The extras: It really is the little things that count.
