At first when I tried to call I had to leave a voicemail and wait 24 hours to get a call back BUT when Michael did call back he was so nice and funny that I forgot it took that long for a call back. He apologized and explained the situation which was totally understandable! Flash forward to the appointment with Ella. I was visiting Birmingham for a wedding and needed a touch up on my color and a great blowout. I got just that and Ella picked the perfect toner to give me the blonde ashy color I was hoping for! This is my absolute happy place. The place smells amazing, offers wine and chocolate to clients, and uses Aveda products; what more could a girl (or guy) ask for? I absolutely love coming to this salon! The moment you walk in you feel the crisp cleanliness in the air. The front windows let in so much light and the hanging mirrors make each little area feel like you're in your own room. I am the person who has been cutting my own hair the past 8 years because of being so picky about getting it cut but I figured I'd break down and get a professional to take a look and I'm glad I did! The stylists are all insanely talented and their products make my hair so bouncy and fresh after my cut. I have never had color in my hair but after talking to a few staff members on a vision I had of 'sun kissed hair' I was convinced to try a balayage and they nailed it! I've gone to Taylor and Makayla and they both have been so sweet and really executed exactly what we discussed. For reference I have a LOT of hair that is fine, brown, and wavy! I'm new to Birmingham and was recommended to Salon U by a native. I checked it out, and seeing positive reviews on yelp about the stylists, I called and made an appointment with Allison through Cain (sorry if I misspelled) who was exceptionally friendly. I was very excited about getting some much needed chair time when I showed up for my appointment to find out...it had been rescheduled? Without asking me? Apparently, a regular had called and they gave that person my appointment and switched my stylist from Allison to someone else and my new stylist had called in sick that morning so they bumped my appointment back to Allison's schedule but at a later time after the regular's. What a headache! Now, I'm the new girl in town and didn't have my heart set on one particular stylist yet, but I found it unprofessional to change details of my appointment without getting the go ahead from me. The manager said she had called me and left a message telling me about the change and to "call back if that was not ok." What would have been the right thing to do is to call me and make sure that was ok BEFORE changing things around. When I suggested this etiquette enhancement, the manager got very defensive and argumentative to the point where I decided to cancel my appointment and find another salon. It's really unfortunate the manager was so unprofessional because the salon itself looked very nice and the stylists are supposed to be pretty great (and I did have a great interaction with Cain, hence the second star). read more

I have been going to Salon U and see James and he is wonderful, and is amazing at color, cuts, styling, all the things. Unfortunately I had to get a blow dry from a different stylist and it was awful. I have been getting my hair done for 15+ years, and the way my hair was being dryed was the most chaotic thing I've ever seen. It was thrown around all over the place while still wet, and created so many knots. I was trying to not just burst out in tears it was so painful, and my scalp has been throbbing since I left. A ton of strands of hair are broken. I never leave bad reviews anywhere, and I don't really want to share a name, but this experience warranted some kind of comment. So if you go to Salon U Homewood, see James, he is the best. read more

It's hard to move to a new city and not know where to go to get your hair did. Thankfully I was referred to Emily Perry and I am so glad I found her! I've always been the type to stick with the same hair color/cut/style - yes, since I was in high school. Emily helped me to realize it was time to get rid of my super long, super blonde hair and move in a more sophisticated direction. I'm so glad I trusted her and I am so looking forward to my next appointment with her! The salon itself is a very nice space and everyone I encountered was friendly and helpful. My only issue is that the shampoo chairs are really uncomfortable, but that seems to happen to me at every salon...maybe I have a weird neck and just don't know it. GO SEE MICHELLE! I visited Salon U for the first time and was elated with the results. I received a TERRIBLE hair cut from another local salon (who will remain nameless) and needed an emergency cut. The lady who answered the phone referred me to Michelle, one of their Master Stylists. She said Michelle can fix anything, and she was spot on! My hair went from looking like my 4-year old cut it with Fiskar scissors to a fantastic masterpiece. I no longer pull my hair back in shame, but flaunt every perfectly sculpted layer with pride. Michelle can work magic - true miracles. I am forever grateful to that angel with shears. Michelle's chair is on the second floor, so it was a bit quieter and more relaxing. She made my head feel amazing after the shampoo, and gave a great neck message with messaging oil. I was in Heaven and did not want to leave that chair. She and I had great conversation - I felt very comfortable with her, like I had known her forever. The salon was very friendly, clean and all around great atmosphere. The only drawback is they offered everyone else a beverage, except me. Parking is tight -, very congest, but it is in downtown Homewood so that was expected. Michelle is my new go-to stylist. After going to him for a year, I decided to get some highlights. I should have done that sooner because they turned out SO well! After each haircut, my stylist Meaghan explained the products and techniques she used to style my hair so that I could repeat the process at home. I was in a wedding recently and when I say the staff was attentive, this is about as much of an understatement as it gets. Doting, kind, and positively agreeable are just a few words I would use to describe this team of stylists. Not only was the experience so positive, the talent of the place is obvious as well. The hair was chosen for all of the bridesmaids (a classic french twist) and was performed with flawless finesse in a timely manner. The fellow wedding gals and I were relaxed and it set the mood & pace for the rest of the day and had us all in an amazing mental state! I recently went to have a hair cut and balayage with Ella. I have gone to her once before for a dry cut and was really impressed. I have thick Asian hair and have struggled finding someone in Birmingham who knows how to cut thick, coarse hair properly. I booked an appointment with Fran a month in advance as I had heard some great things about her. I got a call two days prior to my appointment saying she wasn't taking new clients. I could have gotten my haircut elsewhere, or when I went to Atlanta. I waited a whole month and they ended up cancelling last minute. I was offered another hairstylist, but no thanks. If you are not going to take new clients, then all your staff should know. This is very unprofessional and poor customer service. Never going to this place. read more

SO reading another review from Yelp I gave this place a shot! Let me tell ya, so I made the appt and upon arrival virtually zero waiting time, an assessment was made and we were off to the races. Conversation was great and the Color, Cut & Style was PICTURE PERFECT! Tucked away in some town called Homewood, GIRLS this is a spot not to be dismissed. The owner was adorable and truly very accommodating. So if your a pass'er-by'er or a local southern bell, make sure you stop in and check this place out! I have been here twice now: First time just for a cut, second time for cut and color (balayage). Both times I have had an exceptional experience! :) I cannot recommend this salon and Chuck as a stylist enough. Chuck Duck is amazing!! I have a ton of hair, and 95% of people have not cut it well, so I have continued to search for a great stylist, but I'm so happy I found Chuck now. I was able to tell him exactly what effect I was going for, I showed him a handful of pictures, and he created my cut and my color beautifully. The service of the staff here is also spectacular! My hair was a tragic mess after years of cheap Redkin and Box coloring. I just assumed that I was destined for a life of dull hair and uninspired styling. Enter Brittany. She magically turned my hair into the shiny, lovely goodness it is today. She does such a good job that my coworkers swore I was lying when I told them that I colored my hair. They now offer brow threading and she did an excellent job. I can't wax because I use Retin A. I would suggest calling and making an appointment because the lady that does the threading is also one of their stylist. They also have a great inventory of Aveda skin care products. I've just recently tried their dry brush with oleation oil and I love it. I'm amazed at how revived my face looks. I've also started using the Wedding Masque overnight and I wake up looking refreshed even if I've only had a few hours of sleep. I highly recommend this salon. Their stylist are amazing, the staff knows everything about their hair care products and skincare products. Ladies ask for the Loma Hair Oil it's only 20 bucks and it's an amazing product. I don't have anything good to say about this salon, and this review is LONG over due, I went to Michelle, and my hair looked better before she did it , i don't have hardly any grey, but I specifically ask that it be covered, and it was NOT, i ask for bangs and she snipped a half inch piece that looked like a after thought, and I told the person making the apt. how much hair I have and that I was going out of town so I needed it styled, well I left there with wet hair , and it didn't look good, I felt very rushed. So I called the next day, and left a message for her, no call back, so I called again , and the receptionist is the only person I EVER spoke to ! I ask for the manager to call me , but he did not, they offered to re-do ?? well thats a over statement , NO thanks, AND heres the kicker , they charged me $225 !!!! I felt like I had been robbed !! I have paid that kind of money before and thats fine , when you get those kind of results...BUT I didn't ...I do NOT recommend that anyone go here....Id like to buy them for what they are worth, and sell them for what they think they are worth ;) read more

I have been going to this salon for over 5 years. Because I had to miss one appt. due to illness, I was told my stylist will not see me anymore and the owner confirmed it. Very unprofessional and I have always left over 20% tips. Also, I have always referred my friends to this salon and to my stylist. They are very arrogant, and not appreciative!!! Prices are very high and not what you get for a cut and the staff can be rude. I highly recommend you find another salon...not worth the drama here, nor the lame excuse. They are very sneaky too and will tell you lies concerning times available for service. There are too many salons in Homewood that are much better and I would recommend Sanctuary..much more professional and better hair cut and experience with color by far. I don't like to write bad reviews. I booked this appointment upon suggestion from receptionist at Wheelhouse which was my first choice as they had no openings available. Place is nice- good products, clean, receptionist is lovely. Offer you any number of beverage choices as you get settled. Ultimately, I was unable to get the service I booked as they "couldn't find" the curling iron size required to do it. Not only was the hairdresser unapologetic, she was curt and made me really uncomfortable w her tone. Repeatedly saying, "I don't know what you want me to do," over and over as I realized I would not be leaving w the beach waves I booked the appointment for. I was not rude or even upset until I was spoken to that way. It was really unsettling and made an unpleasant scenario worse. Obv she offered to use curling irons that were diff sizes, however I did not want ringlet curls and the large barrel would not have held a curl on my head at all. Which we discussed and was agreed upon by both that would be the case. Anyway, paid 50 dollars for a blowout I could have given myself- 60 w tip. Blowout was fine, don't love it. Alternately, my boyfriends mother had a wonderful experience with Meghan. Spent my afternoon trying to book an appointment anywhere else, however all salons close at 3 in Birmingham and was out of luck. Be advised. read more
