What can you say about a chicken joint that has been in business for 50 years?! They're doing a lot of things right. These wings are in a league of their own. Crispy, on the outside, juicy on the inside, and seasoned to perfection. The sides are just as good and everything is made in house from scratch. The ambiance is non-existent. But that's not why you're there. You're there to dirty your fingers and clear out your sinuses. The sauce is hot and has been known to cure the common cold. Sal's is a Rochester institution along with Nick Tahou's, Campi's, and Shallers. If you live in Rochester and haven't tried Sals yet, why haven't you?! Probably because you don't know about this small joint. They have some of the best chicken wings in town... because of their brand name Sal sauces ... sassy sauce and then their mild and hot sauce. But what I think makes Sals best is the size of their wings and drums. They are the biggest I have ever found juicy and crispy and delicious as ever! They have other things on the menu as well sides Mac Salad, potato wedges and baked beans all pretty legit as well. They have sandwiches, ribs and some other things on their small menu - but I haven't tried any of those because the wings are that great! One tip is to never drink out of the fountain beverages - don't know when the last time they've been cleaned. read more

We made it to a brick and mortar Sal's Birdland restaurant. We were not disappointed. We preferred the Sal's sauce on the side for dipping, not the "swimming in sauce." Wish we tried the collard greens instead of the macaroni salad. The wings are incredibly meaty with what tastes like a seasoned flour batter. Great cooking technique, very hot oil, good crunch on the coating, very juicy meat inside. No oily or scorched fryer taste on the chicken or potato wedges. The potato wedges also have a flour dredge coating, and they are bigger than French fries, but smaller than steak fries. The outside of the potato wedges have a mild crunch and are fried properly with no soggy texture. The wedges go well dipped in the blue cheese dressing and Sal's sauce also. For two of us we shared the #1 which is 5 winglets and 5 drummets, 2 sides and a fountain drink, and it was just enough. The patrons that came in while we were there for dinner seemed like regulars with a blend of dining in and take out. The dining area is very simple with old school food court style booth seating. The seating area may not be sexy, but we noticed it was very clean. The bathrooms were also clean and maintained. There is a self serve fountain drink station with free refills. Great to see they had SoBe fountain products. This has just become a point of destination for us, and will return when in Rochester. Also, the restaurant owner was working the counter. I had not been to Sal's in probably 25 years... but, for several days I kept thinking I needed to get back there while back up in the area. Finally made it in for lunch, and it did not disappoint!!! Friendly service at the counter, takeout order put together with great care - and the wings were every bit as good as I remembered, if not better! A truly unique sauce that you won't get anywhere! I'll share my colleagues response when I brought him there today to have their chicken finger garbage plate: "A traditional garbage plate is good because it combines some mediocre things like flavorless fries and run of the mill burgers and mixes them together to form a delicious meal...but Sal's chicken plate takes amazing things like the flavorful potato wedges and perfectly crisp & juicy chicken tenders and mixes them together for a whole other level of Rochester plate. More good things: They're legit...been there since the 70s, and talk about personable service...heck, the owner Jimmy waited on us and send all 3 of us away with a bottle of sauce. I would say that Rochester has three classic "dive" restaurants, and this is one of them (the other two being Campi's and Nick Tahous). When you want great chicken wings/fingers/pieces and potatoes, you come here. They have been in a couple of locations over the years, but their quality is always at the top. Their specialty is their sauce, which isn't a honey mustard sauce (though it is commonly mistaken for one). It is a citrus mustard sauce. It has lots of orange flavor, and that alone is why my wife and I purchase it in bottled form and add it to lots of our dishes. But, combine that with perfect wings, chicken quarters, chicken tenders, huge potato wedges, and great mac salad and you have an awesome meal. The location is conveniently off of I-390, and is right near the local colleges. I have been going there for years and never had a bad meal. It isn't health food, but if you want great grub for a low price this is it. Just be warned... if you try their "hot" Sal's sauce you have better be prepared to deal with it. This is more proof that you cannot go home. I lived in Rochester, NY from 1980 to 1984. In my memory Sal's was south of town in a big building where you could order take out, but you could also eat in and have beer. I can't count the times I enjoyed the wings back in that day. I've told anyone who would listen that the best finger food I've ever had. When I came back, the wings are much the same, but there is no license and no one eats in. Every one picks up and leaves the place. Eating there is a disaster. You can get a cup of water, a paper plate and napkins, but you have to eat with dueling TVs that are both too loud and on different channels. Perhaps the only good thing about this experience was it confirmed my belief that you cannot go home again. All the places of your past no matter how good they seemed, let them go. Let them live in joyous memory as great stories. Don't ruin them by trying to bring them to life again. read more

I have eaten chicken wings in nearly every state in the union plus 10 countries around the world and no place....no place even comes close to the awesomeness of Sals! This review is just based on the wings. DH picked up wings on the way home tonight. Sauce on the side. Even after a 1/2 hour ride home, they were still super crispy. The best wings I've ever had! So crispy and flavorful. They really didn't need any sauce at all. The seasoning they're cooked with reminds me of KFC seasoning but they're not breaded. I've been a Sal's devotee for over 20 yrs and the formula has remained the same: fry 1/2 a chicken until juicy and the bones are edible, put it over a couple slices white bread and drown it with that awesome sauce. Absolutely horrible! We ordered two orders of jumbo wings and a cheeseburger garbage plate. First they didn't give us cheese on the burgers for the garbage plate. Second they only gave us half our order then when we called to let them know the girl was arguing with us telling us we were wrong. She needs a course in customer service. But that's the only thing that was excellent. I got the wings with two sides. The chicken itself was nicely cooked and tender, but the coating was mediocre. The potato wedges were okay, but nothing spectacular. And the macaroni salad was decent. Overall, too pricey for what I got. Wings from Sals are a delicious childhood memory for me. My dad took me there every time we visited Rochester. So when I was there last week by myself I still had to go. Wings were outstanding as usual, as well as the macaroni salad. Only issue was the service, for being a Sunday night they only had one cook and one person behind the counter. A unique, special treat! Buffalo resident here, so well-versed in the traditional wing offering. Sal's takes it a step further, with the rest of the chicken as well, augmented by its own proprietary "sassy sauce". A nice diversion from the ordinary, and very tasty too! A spicy, sassy, delectable treat! With enjoyable sides. When I have the chance to be in the Rochester area, if time and schedule permit, I'll often stop by Sal's to enjoy a quarter or half bird on site (the original location further south down the road had more atmosphere!), or to take one (or two!) to go and then happily consume them later at home.
