I'm actually obsessed with BoBo's, and I 100% mean that. BoBo's is the truth. If you're looking for the best soul food in Rochester (and beyond?) look no further. Mr. BoBo makes all of the food in-house and it's made fresh, he is the nicest guy you'll ever meet too. Keep in mind that this is not a sit-down place, in fact there are no tables, so you'll need to treat as take-out only. His entrees cost like $10-$14, but portions are massive. You'll have leftovers for a while. Each dish comes with a meat (chicken wings or ribs), and 2 sides (yams, mac and cheese, collard greens), cornbread, and rice. You can add shrimp for like $3 more. The flavor you guys, the flavor. I have never liked collard greens until I had this man's collard greens, the flavor from the ham-hock is indescribable. The mac and cheese is creamy and seasoned well, the yams are as sweet as candy. The complimentary pieces, the cornbread and the rice are just as good. The rice tastes like chicken and the cornbread is cake, literal sweet, delicious cake. Moving on to the meats, both ribs and chicken wings fall off the bone and BoBo's house-made sauce is A MUST. Every time I eat it, my taste-buds are assaulted by the tenderness of the meat, the flavor and the sauce. FINALLY! A Black-Owned spot in Rochester that is reliable, affordable and a real treat. Yeah, I waited a couple minutes later than what was originally told, but it was well worth it. I wish nothing but the best for this restaurant. 8/10 on the ribs - they were just a little fatty. My niece rated her steak 6/10 - it was just a little too tough & hard for her to cut but the flavor was all the way there. Every side we had was beyond amazing. The flavor is always there, not too seasoned but just enough for you to add whatever you'd like. 30 mins after I got home, the food was still hot and steaming when I opened it. I am a big fan of their greens, cabbage & yams. This place has definitely made it in my top 3 favorite restaurants in Rochester. Kudos to the chef! I found Bobo's on Yelp, figured I'd give it a try. I ordered a chicken & shrimp dinner ($17--yes, at first thought it's a bit pricey, but don't worry). The dinners come with rice and two sides. I chose collard greens and yams. Food is made fresh to order, my wait time was about 20 minutes. First impressions: LOTS of food. Smelled great. Full breakdown: Chicken wings-- Well cooked, large, and crispy. I loved the Bobo sauce. I'm not sure what's in it, but it's some sort of a tangy/sweet&sour/jerk combination. Yum. Shrimp-- Flavored with pepper. Yams--- Oh man, these were good. Sweet (but not overly sweet), mushy, and delicious. You'd be a fool not to order them. Collard greens--- Flavorful, fresh, and paired well with the rice and yams. Rice--- Lightly seasoned. Afterthought: I was able to eat 2/3 of the dinner (VERY happy with the portion sizes). Found this place on Yelp as I was in Rochester on business. After reading the reviews, I decided to take a chance and I must say it was well worth it. It's a take out only type of place- sort of a hole in the wall (hole in the walls have the best food as we all know). I had the chicken wing plate with mac and cheese, yams, and the sauce on the side. It also came with rice and sweet bread (tasted like cake). The chicken was seasoned quite well and fried hard just as I like it. The yams and rice were pretty tasty as well. Now for the mac and cheese, I wasn't too impressed as I'm from the South where our mantra is seasoning our dishes well. Therefore, the mac and cheese wasn't anything to write home about. BoBo's Chicken Shack has some good chicken wings. Yes, just wings, no breasts, no things, no drums. But wings they do, and they do well. Picked up the chicken dinner on a Saturday evening. It took a while to fry them up, as it's quite a small storefront with one cook. Actually, it's pretty much just a kitchen and a waiting area, so get your food and get out. The chicken was perfectly fried. Crispy outside with just the right amount of crunch and a delicious and moist inside. I got to try both with and without BoBo's special sauce and I gotta say, though still good without, you should have the special sauce, maybe on the side(which I did ask for but they forgot, so I stole sauce from my girlfriend). Nothing but good chicken with a great tangy sauce. The sides were also nothing to scoff at. The collard greens were nicely seasoned, with bits of ham in there. The yams were soft and quite sweet, a bit much for me. Corn bread (yellow cake) was also on the sweeter side, but I love corn bread and think it goes GREAT with bbq. Rice is good, but nothing special. And Mac and Cheese we got as a free extra (maybe it was the last batch?) it was nothing special to me, but my girlfriend quite enjoyed it. There is some great food to be had here! This is a strictly take-out joint and yes prepare for a wait. I placed my order and was told it would be 15-20 minutes so I went out and sat in my car for awhile. The surrounding area is what many would consider blighted so if you are timid about sketchy hoods don't be surprised. The chicken here only consists of wings that are perfectly fried crisp and doused in a sweet savory bbq type sauce. The menu is limited which I appreciated so I didn't have to guess what was good and what wasn't. Portions are HUGE. For my sides I got mac and cheese which was fantastic..and the collard greens which were not. WAAAAAY too salty, in fact I couldn't really eat much of it. The saltiness of the greens on top of the savoriness of the mac and cheese and the chicken was just too intense. I like to get my veggies on, but would choose the yams if I went back here. My combo plate of chicken and sauteed shrimp with rice, 2 sides and corn bread (which btw I thought was excellent) cost $17. Not extravagant, but not a whole lot of value. The mac and cheese aint made with aged vermont cheddar and gruyere..this is simple comfort food with cheap ingredients at a high price. The people that work here are really friendly, but the place itself is not much to look at. A true hole in the wall, and the open kitchen design doesn't work well for it. The prep area looked very sloppy, and while many restaurants may have similar looking kitchens, seeing it as I ordered made me think twice. Nevertheless I plan to support this business, but not in the near future...need to give my blood pressure a break for awhile from all the salt. read more

We recently drove into the city from East Roch to check out Bobo's Chicken Shack, based on the numerous glowing reviews -- and we were not disappointed. We got two orders of chicken wings, and sides of greens and mac. My BF, who went into the shop by himself (I am recovering from surgery, so I stayed in the car), said there really wasn't a menu anywhere, just a whiteboard with a few items written on it. He also mentioned that the ordering was confusing, people just sort of standing around with no clear indication of who had ordered already and who was waiting to do so, etc. However, he managed to put his order in and then sat down to wait. And wait. And wait. I don't know if it's always this slow -- seemed to be just one fellow (Bobo himself?) cooking and taking orders, so maybe they were shorthanded for a Saturday afternoon (about 4 or 5 when we went). NBD, I'm always willing to wait for good food, and Bobo's food was goooood. The collards and mac-n-cheese were to die for. Greens just perfectly cooked, the perfect amount of vinegary tang plus bacony richness. The mac was equally delicious. I said to BF after the meal, "Next time we'll get extra orders to have the next day." The chicken wings were huge, and also excellent. I was not a huge fan of the sweet, sticky sauce -- just not my thing -- but if you like a sweet BBQ sauce you'll love Bobo's. I would've preferred plain fried chicken, even if it was just wings. Where do I begin except wow. I read the article in the D & C that gave it a great review so I had to see what all the rave was about. I ordered what they are famous for, their chicken. The chicken was tender, melted off the bone, and had a sauce Rochester has never tasted. Not boss sauce, country sweet, sal's, but their own. It was lip smacking delicious. The chicken wasn't the only star in my Styrofoam to go plate. You get 2 sides as well as rice and I want to call it corn bread, but different. Let me tell you about this before the sides. It was soft and melted in my mouth. I wish I had butter at work bc nothing goes better with bread than butter. It was so soft; I can't get over it. The rice had flavor and this shocked me bc I'm Asian and I'm accustomed to Jasmine rice with no flavor. Now my first side was mac n cheese! Holy sweet strawberries Batman was it cheesy. Loaded with Velveeta I'm sure, and milk, and maybe even nutmeg. It was so good it didn't stand a chance to make it home to my wife. I had every intention to bring her home some. This is the kind of mac n cheese an old black lady spends her whole life mastering. No longer do I have to wait for cookouts or occasions. I waited for the yams to get done bc yams beats greens any day and I'm ecstatic I waited. They were a diamond in a sea of gemstones. Not too candied, but perfect. Some people let their brown sugar do all the work and it's no longer yams. These were yams that were candied and were excellent. I ordered 3 dinners and the portions were huge in each; you definitely get your money's worth. I'm talking about lifting weights heavy with 3 dinners in the bag. I tried to call ahead to no availability so you will most likely have to stop in and order like I did. I hit them right when they opened so that could've been a reason for the no call pick up. A friend-who knows her chicken-recently recommended Bo Bo's Chicken Shack. I was really excited to give it a try, as I consider myself a wing connoisseur of sorts and am always looking for good chicken spots. I'm glad I did. I came through on a Saturday around 5 pm, and there was a steady stream of people in the restaurant, all ordering food to go. The owner (who I am assuming is Bo Bo) was there cooking and taking orders from customers. He greeted me with a friendly "Hello," and promptly took my order. All of the food at Bo Bo's is fresh and made to order (no heat lamps at this chicken spot) which was a good sign . I ordered a chicken wing dinner, which consisted of six chicken wings, served on a bed of plain white rice, two generous portions of sides, and a slice of tea cake/cornbread for dessert. I was impressed; the wings were cooked extra crispy (just how I like them) and had a dark, caramel colored breading with a great flavor. The smoky-sweet barbeque-esque sauce that smothered the chicken complemented it very well. With respect to the sides I was impressed again; I got mac n' cheese and collard greens. The mac n' cheese, made with real cheddar, was tasty and the greens were well-spiced (garlicky and salty) and very tender. I had ordered an extra side of mac n' cheese because so many times, side portions-especially at wing spots-can be really small, but Bo Bo's had such generous portions, I didn't even finish my sides that came with the order. Overall, Bo Bo's has a small menu. While chicken wings are served every day, there are daily specials that include sautéed shrimp and peppers, salmon, smoked pork steak, amongst others (with respect to sides, I also saw yams and cabbage on the menu). However, if the chicken wings are any indication of the quality of the other food, I am guessing that Bo Bo's is a spot where the menu is not extensive, but what they do is done really well. I look forward to trying a new item next time I come through! I found the atmosphere at Bo Bo's to be friendly - I ended up chatting with one of the workers while I waited for my order. With respect to appearance, the décor is nothing fancy-there are a couple of family photos on the wall, a tables with four chairs, and a very small counter. With respect to dining in, the small storefront could accommodate four, or maybe five people, so ordering to go, rather than dining in with a large group, would be best. Although I am from the Eastside, Bo Bo's was good enough that I would def take the time to drive over to '05 for some chicken on a weekend or when I had a minute. What shall I say about BoBo's. I'll start by saying that I am used to my Louisianan grandmother's cooking, so BoBo had a lot to live up to after reading these reviews. And wow did he ever! Move over Gran-Gran cause BoBo is in the house. I have been to BoBo's twice now and it was even better the second time around. The first time I went I got the fried chicken wings with the sauce on them. The wings were crispy and crunchy and the sauce sweet and thick and clung to the chicken like nobody's business. The second time I got the sauce on the side just to see what the wings where like naked. Can you say good gracious. BoBo knows how to treat a chicken wing! The best I've had since coming to Upstate New York. BoBo's generous sides are hearty, delicious and flavorful and will please even the pickiest of palates. The mac n cheese is creamy, the greens are meaty with the right amount of seasoning, the yams are oh so sweet and it's all rounded out on a bed of buttery rice. And the cornbread....the cornbread....people, people, people. Never in my life have I tasted cornbread such as this. This is not cornbread this is CAKE! Simply perfection. This rating is mainly for the chicken dinner. Absolutely best fried chicken I've had. I recommend having the sauce on the side instead. Collard greens side is very tasty. Mac and cheese is good. One star off the the rest of the sides they have: candied yam is way too sweet and sweet bread is basically birthday cake without frosting(no exaggeration). The wait is painfully long. You'd be better off call to order in advance. It seems like he make food when order comes in. That also means you'll be getting piping hot, fresh off the stove food though.
