Saw Sal's when going to my doctor. Looked them up online to see what things they had on the menu. The Caprese pizza caught my eye. I asked for extra cheese and got it! The ingredients are very fresh and you can taste the goodness. The crust is very good... I don't normally eat crust, but I did on this pizza. It's a little more expensive than I would normally pay, but once in a while for a good pizza, I will splurge. The inside is small, but there are several booths if you want to eat inside. There is also outside seating. The service was good and it didn't take long for my order to be ready. read more

Via Slice told it would be a 15min window, latest at 1904. Finally walked out at 1911. 52min after order placed. Totally understandable on a Saturday night...but don't tell me it's ready and then make me wait 20min. (And then forget my garlic rolls!) The customer service is just not satisfactory. I get the whole labor supply squeeze but the whole restaurant is being run by under 20yr olds. Five people waiting to pick up, plus the DoorDash guy (who was clearly displeased about the wait). I have to validate what others have said about the funky smell. I've been in second-world restaurants that gave a better feel than this place. The food last time was good...not great but lots of potential. This time there was clearly less effort. I ordered spinach on our pizza and they just loaded it with basil (not a listed ingredient). The four meat pizza was great with lots of meat and the meat itself was well seasoned and very real. The pepperoni/onion/mushroom pizza was not nearly as good. The pizza is nothing to die for, but it some of the better pizza in the area for the price. Will go again. It's pretty ho hum as far as Italian but frankly, that's Chapel Hill for you. I've tried the spaghetti carbonara and though it's better than the Mangones and Carrboro pizza oven, it's still reliant on Alfredo sauce rather than eggs, though they at least use them in the recipe. The pasta dishes are fairly priced at least. The pizza is where it gets ludicrous. I know a lot of artisanal pizza places are springing up ushering in a huge premium on upscale pizza but this pizza has nothing upscale about it to warrant the amount you'd spend. It's definitely a one and done for me but you could do worse when it comes to their pasta. read more

This place has been in a steep decline since they moved spots. Pizza and food were decent/mediocre before but reasonably priced--since they've moved, they ramped up the prices quite a bit while quality has suffered. Last straw was I ordered delivery from here last week and it was enough to never want to deal with them again--I live less than 2 miles away, and after multiple calls, my single large, 28 dollar pizza arrived after almost 2 hours cold. Maybe a 3 on clean. Not that amazing. But a 4 on portion sizes And flavor.. I had a "small" Stromboli that was massive and I'm a corn fed, closet fat kid of a hoss saying that .. It was cheesy gold. I came during Monday lunch and was denied the special weekday lunch price because it "was slow and day before the holiday." Sicilian pizza itself was decent except the mushrooms. I really want to like this place, but like others have mentioned, it has gone downhill. The taste is the same, but they drastically cut back on how much toppings they put on the pizzas, as well as the meat and veggies in the pasta. On a cold, wintery Saturday, my buddy treated me to dinner. We arrived around 6pm and we were greeted and seated immediately. It is a relatively small dining room maybe seating 30. Quaint. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, as was, anybody from the Staff we encountered. We ordered 2 Large Stromboli's, (I do mean Large) Cooked to perfection with our individual adjustments. We ordered $36 worth of pizza, wings and mozzarella sticks from Sal's. When we opened the pizza box, all of the cheese had slid off of the top of the pizza into the corner of the box, and there were very few toppings on it (we ordered sausage, green pepper, and onion). Nutella cheesecake??? Yes please! This is kind of your standard pizza buffet place. You can get a decent meal for a good price, just don't expect fine Italian dining. You serve yourself to food that's sitting under heat lamps. They have a small variety of pasta, meat, pizza, and vegetable dishes and a simple dessert. It's Friday night and the weather is a little misty so we place an online order for delivery of a large cheese pizza and an order of calamari from Sal's. I order at 5:50pm and see a 45 minute delivery time. No problem- that's like dinner at 6:35pm or so. I called Sal's at 7:17pm to inquire about status....almost 1.5 hours since placing the order. Was told that it was on the way. Then I receive two calls about 10 minutes later from the driver. Said it was a "busy night". We literally live within 2 miles from Sal's. I'm giving them a 4 only because of one thing: Inattentiveness to the needs of home-delivery customers. Their food is fabulous (Margherita pizza is quite literally the best in town). But they don't give home-delivery customers anything to eat their delicious food with. No utensils, no straws, no napkins, no condiments. Plus, they put the food in leaky containers that drip a large amount of oil and grease all over the place, making a disgusting mess. Do better with this, Sal's! Hello Sal's. My order today, April 9, 2022, of carry out plain cheese pizza was vey good as expected. But, my calamari appetizer was the pits. Most of the slices of calamari were way way too thin. They were dried out and tasteless after frying. The few slices that were the appropriate thickness were fine. In the past, all the slices were thick and juicy. If you are going to use sub par calamari, then just take it off the menu. Never again! read more

The pizza is pretty good, but the service is lousy and downright rude. My family has been there 4-5 times since the pandemic, easily making it our most frequented spot. We've brought friends, and recommended them. The young woman who works the counter is always very rude and unhelpful, especially when she gets your order incorrect. Our go to place for a nice, yet casual, italian lunch or dinner, Typically pizza or pasta, although their steak and cheese hogie is very good, not quite as good as pulcinella's or randy's in Durham, but close. The owners of Sals take good care of us, memorizing our drink preferences and cutting up our kids pizza. Really great service. We've been going to Sal's for several years primarily because they are the closest pizza place to our home. But we continue to be disappointed with Sal's and will NOT be returning for two primary reasons: 1. They don't price appropriately - for example (tonight is the last straw) I just ordered a large pizza for pick up (large - 1/2 cheese only and 1/2 with 3 toppings). They charged me the same amount as a large 3-topping pizza. I asked the cashier about this and she had some sort of explanation that didn't make sense - something about the last topping they gave me double portion on one half - but there certainly isn't twice as many mushrooms on one half). 2.
